Two Louisiana men were sentenced in the 34th District Court of Louisiana in St. Bernard Parish for commercial fishing violations on June 27. Shawn C. Thompson, 47, and James H. Williams, 53, both of Port Sulphur, pleaded not guilty for possessing an excess of 15 percent of non-living cultch material on state seed grounds. A third subject, Andrew Duplessis, 40, of Davant, failed to appear in court. The honorable Judge Darren Roy found both Thompson and Williams guilty and sentenced each to pay a $500 fine plus court costs. A bench warrant was issued for Duplessis for failing to appear. Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries enforcement agents and biologists were performing commercial fish inspections on the Three Mile Pass State Seed Ground in St. Bernard Parish on Oct. 29, 2018 when they came into contact with the three men. The LDWF agents and biologists determined the three men harvesting oysters were in possession of an excess of over 15 percent of non-living cultch material. LDWF agents instructed the subjects to return the oysters and cultch back into the water, however the subjects refused to cooperate. Agents were able to obtain an arrest warrant and arrested the three men on Nov. 5, 2018 in St. Bernard Parish for possessing over 15 percent of non-living cultch material on state seed grounds. The harvest of seed oysters from a Public Oyster Seed Ground or reservation shall be for the purpose of moving the live oyster resource. The removal of more than 15 percent of non-living reef material in bedding loads is prohibited.

As the bite slowed I used the trolling motor and moved nearby where there was a bit of water movement. This was a great move as most of these trout were studs. We only measured a few. We were getting them on both live and Vu Du shrimp. We also found a small flounder and some slot reds. Did I mention we found some hardheaded catfish also?

Well with all that going on, I am thinking Fall! Cooler temperatures, the fragrance of pumpkins and spice, the leaves on the tress turning yellow, orange, and brown and all sights and feel of the cooler weather. So when Renee Mullins sent an email with her newest Owl, I just had to have it! I could hardly wait until the pattern packet and wood came in the mail. He is just too adorable. It really should have not taken me as long as it did to paint. But, my grandson, and some of his co workers rescued new born kittens that they discovered in a shipment of hay. And he brought home the last unclaimed kitten. He didn’t want to see it taken to the shelter. Well, the little munchkin he brought home, has taken over our lives. He weighed only 4 ounces. when Dion brought him home. He is now a big boy weighing in at 15.5 ounces. So, painting this project took a lot longer than it should. But, it is done and ready to be hung. I love the black background, it really makes the other colors stand out. So are you thinking Fall yet? Hope you like it. Well, that’s my craft for this time. What will your next craft project be? Water is needed daily by all organisms to stay alive. In many instances hummingbirds, find water on their own throughout the landscape. However, when planting and designing specifically for them it is important to include a water feature nearby. Accomplish this by using a birdbath or plant saucer and filling it with water. Fill the container with sand or pea gravel to provide a place for the bird to stand to stand. Believe or not, hummingbirds can drown if not given a safe place to access the water. Prevent issues with mosquito larvae by refilling the water daily. Lastly, provide food by planting a selection of flowers, shrubs, trees, and vines that produce a continuous supply of nectar. Hummingbirds feed on nectar found in flowers and the insects that are attracted to nectar. The general rule of thumb when it comes to determining whether or not a plant has potential for attracting hummingbirds is having a tubular shaped flower. Citrus and loquat (Eriobotrya japonica) trees produce nectar in their flowers and provide good cover due to their size. Cigar plant (Cuphea ignea), turk’s cap (Malvoviscus arboreus), shrimp plant (Justicia brandegeana), and lantana (Lantana camara) make for excellent shrub like hummingbird plants. As far as annual and perennial flower plants look for cardinal flower (Lobelia cardinalis), salvia (Salvia spp.), red hot poker (Kniphonia uvaria), firecracker plant (Russelia equisetiformis), and beebalm (Monarda fistulosa). Try planting a mixture of flowers to create diversity in food source to keep your hummingbirds interested during the entire growing season.

We fished until the live bait was finished and called it for the day. This fishing expo. lasted 2 hours. Our scouting trip ended up ended up being a one stop shopping trip. Scouting will have to be done the next time we get together.
Knowing there were potentially severe storms in the area I decided to stay close. We knew we only had a small window of time to fish. I had 4 guys. 3 of them were good fishermen which made things easier for me. I hit the same general place I found the big trout. The fish were there but a lot smaller and we had to measure a lot of them. It was not long before the rumbles of thunder were heard. Soon we had some lightning heading our way. We fished as long as we safely could. I had it on my radar and the storm blocked off mystraight line run to the marina. I went out and around to avoid the heavy mess heading at us. We even saw a down spouting the storm on our left as we were running from one behind us.
Back at the marina we just piled up the catch of the day. We had 77 keepers on ice. There was no time to lay them out for a good looking picture. We watched several boats come in with totally drenched people. We lucked out by getting back dry and with a good box of fish. Life is Good!
This particular night we were blessed with one of the most beautiful sunsets I have ever seen. The picture does not do it justice. As the saying goes “Red at night Sailors delight .” Unfortunately the saying did not hold true for me.
