Louisiana Department of Wildlife & Fisheries Louisiana Red Snapper Landing Estimates Through June 30 BATON ROUGE, La.-- The latest catch statistics recorded by LA Creel, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries’ (LDWF) near real-time data collection program, is 348,331 pounds, or 43 percent of Louisiana’s allocation. This estimate covers the period through June 30. The season will remain open until recreational landings approach or reach Louisiana’s annual private recreational allocation of 816,439 pounds of red snapper approved under the EFP according to landings estimates from LA Creel. The private recreational red snapper season began May 24 in both state and federal waters. This season will run weekends only (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, including the Monday of Memorial Day and Thursday of Fourth of July) with a daily bag limit of two fish per person and a 16-inch total length minimum size limit.

Louisiana is operating under its second year of an EFP which allows the state to manage the private recreational red snapper season in state and federal waters. Under the EFP, participating anglers are allowed to fish red snapper in the state territorial seas and adjoining federal EEZ, from shore to 200 nautical miles, during the season set by the LDWF Secretary or Commission. NOAA Fisheries continues to regulate federal for-hire vessels (charter and headboats). State charter captains (those who do not have a federal Gulf of Mexico charter permit for reef fish) may only fish for red snapper in state waters when the state recreational red snapper season is open. During the eight years Barack Obama served as President of the United States, the Democratic Party was united. He was the coalescing force that held the party together. By bringing in Hillary Clinton as his Secretary of State at the start of his administration, Obama healed the wounds from the bruising 2008 presidential race. During his re-election campaign of 2012, Obama was not challenged for the Democratic presidential nomination and he won another term as President.

The Democratic Party unity started falling apart during the 2016 presidential race. The party was split between the progressive supporters of socialist U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders and the more traditional Democrats who backed Hillary Clinton. The split intensified after it was revealed that CNN political analyst Donna Brazile gave Clinton questions in advance of a debate. It was also discovered that Clinton’s campaign basically controlled the Democratic National Committee’s fundraising operation and had a lock on super delegates prior to her securing the party’s nomination. Basically, Sanders never had a chance to win the party’s nomination in 2016. While many of the Senator’s followers eventually supported Clinton in the general election, a sizeable number either flipped to Trump, voted for the Green Party candidate Jill Stein or boycotted the election altogether and did not vote. It was certainly a contributing factor in Donald Trump winning the presidential election and shocking the political world by securing 306 electoral votes in the biggest upset in U.S. history. As a new presidential election has begun, the Democrats are splintered among almost two dozen candidates. The members of the more traditional wing of the party are backing former Vice President Joe Biden, while the progressives are either supporting Sanders again, U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), U.S. Senator Kamala Harris (D-CA) or one of the other leftwing candidates. While Biden was the initial favorite in the early polls, his lead has been dramatically reduced since a poor debate performance. He has also been hurt by a string of gaffes that have exposed his flaws as a candidate once again. Biden has never been a very good presidential candidate and suffered overwhelming losses in his previous races in 1988 and 2008.

To blunt the criticism and stop the loss of support, Biden is working tirelessly to switch his positions on an array of issues to satisfy the angry progressives who don’t trust him or any old guard Democrat. For example, Biden withdrew his four-decade support of the Hyde amendment, which prevents federal dollars being spent on abortions. Biden changed his position after being condemned by Hollywood stars like Alyssa Milano and other progressives. The Democratic Party split is apparent on many levels. New progressives are not only more liberal than Biden, Clinton and others among the elite of the Democratic Party, but this new movement also includes more women, more minorities and are younger. The multi-faceted rupture is also quite apparent among Democrats in Congress. Relations are horrible between House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and the four progressive “women of color” who were elected in 2018: Congresswomen Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Ilhan Omar (DOn this particular day we only got 5 red snapper. It is the same schism that is apparent in the presidential race. If Biden wins the nomination, with Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) as the top Democrats in Congress, the progressives will be completely shut out of the power positions in the party once again. At that point, there is real potential for the party to split apart. The progressive wing does not want to be appeased; they want control of the Democratic Party. This Democratic Party infighting is great news for President Donald Trump. Hope you made it through Tropical Storm Barry with minimal discomfort. In our family, we always prepare for the worst while praying for the best. Having survived 3 major hurricanes, Betsy, Camille, and Katrina (loosing everything all 3 times) I have learned to take it all in stride. Material things can be replaced, it just might take awhile. No matter where you go in this world, there will always be a natural disaster. So, we help each other, as best as we can, recover from the devastation and we move forward. Always keeping family, friends, and yes, complete strangers, in our prayers. On a lighter side of things, I finished my Bee Welcome Gnome! He will be hanging on my front door as soon as I can find the wire I have in the craft room. This is, of course, a Renee Mullins design. She always comes up with the cutest designs. This one took me a little while to paint. I had run out of some of the colors I needed and the craft stores did not have them, so I had to order them. I get so impatient when I am waiting on craft supplies to arrive! I like making the first one like the designer suggests. Than after that I choose whatever colors I feel like. That way you don’t get bored. The Bee Welcome Gnome measures 15” tall and 10” wide. Such a cute greeting for any front door, or back door. No matter where he is placed he will be an adorable addition. I will be painting extras of this one. Let me know if you would like one. Well, that’s it for this time. BACKYARD FIGS
To most people, the month of July is full of summer vacations, weekend BBQ’s, and a lot of porch sitting as they wait out the long hot days of summer. However, the home gardener sees this month as a peak time for harvesting figs in the backyard fruit orchard. Figs are some of the most popular backyard fruit trees in the region. They are easy to grow and work well into an edible landscape theme. As fig trees start ripening this season, take notes on different varieties and learn the general growing requirements needed to produce your own crop in the future. Will Afton Figs, like all other fruits trees, need full sun to be productive. Avoid shady areas with lots of trees and be aware of large structures that block out the sun. Look for areas out in the middle of the yard that receive sun in the morning, mid-day, and the afternoon. Water drainage is the second thing to look for when planning the location of your fig garden. Avoid areas that pool water after a rain event. Look for a well-drained area with decent slope. Once sun and drainage requirements are met, start looking into different fig varieties that grow well in the region. COMMON FIG VARIETIES Celeste – The most widely planted fig in the area. A hardy plant that grows well throughout the region. The fruit is bronze to light brown with a light strawberry pulp and it ripens late June through July. Celeste is excellent for fresh eating, canning, and preserving. Brown Turkey – Also known as ‘Texas Everbearing’, the ‘Brown Turkey’ fig produces medium to large fruits with brown to maroon colored skin and amber colored pulp. They main crop ripens two to three weeks after ‘Celeste’ and continues through August. LSU Purple – A medium sized red to dark purple fig with a light red colored pulp. The main crop ripens in July. Produces a mild flavor with a high sugar content.
Buying a potted plant is not the only way to get a new tree. Stem cuttings taken during the summer months and rooted in soil is referred to as softwood propagation. Use the soft wood from the current season’s growth to make 6-inch long cuttings. Cut stem pieces just below a node (area where leaves emerge from stem). Place cuttings in a suitable rooting medium such as sand, peat, or a mixture of the two with at least one node below and one node above the soil line. Rooting hormone powder encourages root develop but figs root easily and therefore do not require it. For the next 3-4 weeks, mist the cuttings with water a few times throughout the day. Keep the cutting piece and soil slightly moist but not soggy. Once the cuttings start producing roots, gradually reduce the misting frequency. After 4 weeks place newly rooted plants into an area with partial sun for a couple of week before introducing them to full sun. You can raise the small plants in pots before transplanting them into the garden.

Once there I located the side of the rig that was holding the most fish and put my trolling motor in spot lock which held us directly over the fish. They were holding at about 150 to 180 feet down. The second day we targeted the red snapper. Unfortunately the sharks also targeted them. We limited out on the red snapper. Our 2 biggest went 23 and 24 pounds respectively. STUDS! The trophy of the day was our 6 bearded brotula. These are exceptionally great eating white meat fish. They are in the cusk eel family. Never pass up a chance to put these in your fish box.
There was no time for any pictures because we were just dropping down to our Mark’s, locking in, and getting hit almost before we could lock in our reels. As we were getting close to our limit a storm came up. We could not run from it so we we got in close to the rig down wind and I held the boat in place with the big motor. It was a windy lightning filled burst that lasted for about 25 minutes which seemed like a lot longer. Once it went past us we reset up and limited out with our 20 vermillion snapper.
As the day went we managed our limit of red snapper., the brotula, a pair of scamps, another big croaker. Life is Good!
They also had a good day 2.
On the way in I hit one rig in about 60 feet. It was loaded with decent sized white trout. There were also predator fish in the area. I come in with a head of what would have been a good fish many I decided to go out scouting on Saturday. The tide was going to start falling about noon so there times. Today was a “you can’t make this stuff up” day. As I was reeling in a good fish a snapper or was no rush to get out early. My goal was to get a pair of red snapper and a limit of slot reds. I cobia or shark hits the fish on my hook. There is a huge tug on the line and I reel up the tail of the fish launched at Venice Marina and noticed Travis Mayeu walking around. He asked me if I wanted to I was reeling in. I had to put it on the deck and get a picture of my trophy catch. go tarpon fishing. I convinced him to hop on my boat. Well we had our limit of nice vermillion snapper and went through a crazy thunder storm and never did what we set out to do. To say it was an unusual and eventful afternoon was fitting. Our day still had one surprise waiting for us. As I was running the Mississippi river south of the head of passes Travis said there they are. I asked what? He said the water buffalo. I stopped the boat, turned back, and eased in for a good look. If you see these use extreem caution as they will attack you in an instant. I used the zoom on my phone for the picture. They never took their eyes off us until I started backing away. I have heard of them but it was the first time I ever saw them. Beautiful creatures. We ended up with a successful trip never doing what we set out do. Life is Good!

New Jr. Ambassador Program – Our Jr. Ambassador Zoey Zulli has been doing a tremendous job getting donations for PAWS! All week long she has brought in items that we were in desperate need of! She is also shining bright doing spotlights for us on social media in letting the public know what is needed at the shelter and just how easy it is to make a difference.
