Words to GREAUX by CRAPEMYRTLES While driving through any shopping center, park, or neighborhood, crapemyrtle trees are ubiquitous in the southern landscape. In fact, crapemyrtle trees are used so often that if you didn’t see one in someone’s yard, you might think you were in a different country. The common name, crapemyrtle, is derived from its crepeWill Afton like flower petals and resemblance to true myrtles. Yes, crapemyrtles are not actually myrtles (Myrtus communis), but rather they belong to the genus Laegerstroemia. These trees are native to Southeastern Asia and are known for their beautiful blooms during the summer months. Over 150 years ago, L. indica was the first crapemyrtle species to make an appearance in the United States. It had a long blooming season but was highly susceptible to powdery mildew disease. It wasn’t until the 1950s when a researcher with the US National Arboretum decided to travel to Japan in search of new and interesting plants where L. fauriei was found. This species of crapemyrtle showed some resistance to powdery mildew and also displayed beautiful exfoliating bark. A breeding program was started and several well-known varieties were developed. These indica x fauriei crosses where all given Native American names and some of them should sound familiar to you. ‘Natchez’ is tall upright growing variety reaching heights of 25-30 feet tall and blooms a white flower. ‘Muskogee’ is very similar in appearance but produces light lavender colored blooms. ‘Arapaho’ doesn’t get quite that tall but it has purple/red colored blooms. Reaching heights of 1520 tall, the ‘Sioux’ variety displays gorgeous pink blooms. If you are looking for a smaller plant then look at the pinkish red blooms of ‘Tonto’, which gets no taller than 12 feet high. Due to the popularity of crapemyrtles, there have been many releases over the years. The raspberry pink blooms of ‘Raspberry Sundae’, the bright red blooms of ‘Red Rocket’, and the wine color blooms of ‘Pink Velour’ are just some of standouts available in the trade. Some of the newest releases include varieties that produce dark colored foliage. The Black Diamond series features dark purple foliage with red, pink, and white options. Start looking at crapemyrtles while they are in full bloom this season. Take notes on which ones stand out to you and might look good in your home landscape. Later on in the fall, when temperatures start to lower, go ahead a make your purchase and begin planting. There are two foliar diseases, Bacterial Leaf Spot and Cercospora Leaf Spot, can influence early leaf drop on crapemyrtles. Bacterial Leaf Spot typically shows up earlier in the year producing leaf spots and eventually the subsequent loss of infected leaves. Cercospora Leaf Spot is a late season problem and is currently causing leaf spots and leaf dropping on crapemyrtles around Lake Pontchartrain. To manage these diseases start practicing good sanitation. Rake up and dispose infected leaves in the trashcan. This removal of the infection source will help to limit the spread and break the lifecycle of these organisms. Fungicide sprays can be worked into the management plan to provide a second layer of protection. Remember to read and follow label instructions before applying pesticide.

Louisiana Department of Wildlife & Fisheries Joint Investigation Leads to Oyster Citations for Slidell Man Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) enforcement agents in a joint investigation with the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources cited a Slidell man for alleged oyster violations on June 17 in St. Tammany and Terrebonne parishes. LDWF agents cited Percy B. Dardar III, 39, for failing to tag sacked oysters, failing to tag containerized oysters, failing to maintain traceable oyster records, violating oyster refrigeration code requirements, illegal shipping of commercial fish, violating interstate commerce, and selling oysters without a wholesale/retail seafood license. LDWF agents were alerted to a social media post about Dardar attempting to sell shucked oysters illegally. Agents started an investigation and found that Dardar was harvesting oysters from the Pointe-aux-Chenes area to sell in Mississippi.

I used Deco Americana Acrylic paint. When the paint dried, I applied varnish and it was all ready to be hung. I will be participating in a craft show this October, so I have been busy painting Fall and Winter. I will give you more details when I receive them. Capt. Hoop/ Our Freedom / Life is Good! DELTA TIRES TIME OFF! Mrs Donna wanted to show her grand son a good day of fishing. We started out very slow. Our first fish in the box was a very respectable sheepshead. Hard head cats were plentiful. This was not looking to be a productive trip. About the third or fourth stop Mrs. Donna hooks, fights, and looses a very nice redfish. There myst be a cloud over my head.
CALL US TODAY...SELL IT TOMORROW! By this time AJ was cetting noticeably irritated. His fish catching was not going well for him at all today. He had caught about a dozen blue crabs and several stingrays and catfish. Thinking he had another stingray or catfish he was surprised when a nice flounder came to the surface. Unfortunately this would be his only donation to the dinner table for today. It was a good thing we had Evan along to take up the slack. Just to keep him from getting homesick the lord blessed him with a largemouth bass to add to the bounty.
After about 10 minutes Evan sets the hook on one way down this little canal. This fish was not getting away. The fishing expert was on the business end of the line and in total control. This was his first of the day but no where near his last.
To finish the day Evan had the pleasure of doing battle with this bull to add to his already outstanding day. This boy fished hard all day. This was our last stop as the heat was almost unbearable.
That place ran it’s course so I moved on. Our next place had a decent bit of current so I changed up tactics a bit. I have something I refer to as my redfish finder. It worked well as Evan soon put another in the box. By now he was ragging on Grandpa as AJ was only getting the trash fish out of the way. The fishing was not on fire but every place was starting to produce a bit. We were slowly putting some meat in the boat. Well 2 were anyways. Gramps was just observing while keeping the stingrays and catfish busy. Oh he was also getting some jaw jacking from mighty little fisherman.
About 10:15 he talks to his dad and I heard him tell his dad “I already caught more redfish today than I ever caught in one day”. About this time he had caught 4 keepers and our day was not over yet. That statement made my day. Even Mrs. Donna was getting into the redfish action. She decided it was no longer a catch and release day for them any more. Somebody had to help Evan do the grocery shopping.
On the way in I noticed some clean water back in a pond and detoured to take a look. Evan has the pleasure of hooking yet another monster. This time it is a 4 foot bull shark. It was fitting way to end the day. At the end of the day they asked him if he wanted to do it again. You already know his answer. That trip will be in the next issue. Life is Good!

They have many benefits for our neighborhoods such as rodent control, and it is up to us to make sure they stay safe and protected. The laws outlining feral cats in Plaquemines Parish are in place to protect the feral cat communities and prevent overpopulation. Outlined below are some of the laws about feral cats in Plaquemines Parish. • First and foremost, and privately owned cats, whether they are indoor or outdoor cats, must be ear-tipped or microchipped. If you remember from our last article, when a cat is spayed or neutered, they are ear tipped to help trappers know which ones have already been fixed. • Community cats may be allowed outside so long as the cats do no prove to be a nuisance to neighbors.
