Tony’s Take IT’S TIME TO REINVIGORATE OURSELVES 244 years ago, a group of privileged White men sat around a nonair conditioned room in Philadelphia for several weeks, arguing and posturing on what could be created to stem the injustices and intrusions by a distant and increasingly belligerent government of even more privileged white men. Those outliers in Pennsylvania wanted to break away from oppression. They didn’t have a sympathetic press or corporate peacemakers to muddy the waters. They were sharply divided on the freedom of enslaved people of color, a common practice that existed worldwide in their day. If these men had failed in their mission, they would have been arrested. And the freedom that a fledgling nation might have gained had they succeeded would have been replaced by an arrogant and feudal power from Europe, with a tyranny that in 2020 may not even be imaginable. These men would have been found guilty of treason and other high crimes by a kangaroo British judiciary. They would have been stripped of all their property and worldly possessions and they and their families run off their land. Except the men wouldn’t have fared so well. They would have been pilloried, then either hung or quartered/butchered alive, depending on which British military commander made the decision. Then they would have been gutted, dismembered completely after being beheaded, their bodies burned and their remains trashed or fed to pigs. Some “privilege”. The plan of these men of privilege was far from perfect but it was revolutionary. The fault of white privilege historically has been in its inability to change as dramatically as the country evolved, leaving ever-widening gaps between reality and perception placed on the shoulders of the population. And the definition of white privilege is yet unsettled today. But it definitely exists more in the halls and gathering places in Washington, D.C.,regardless of party affiliation or position than it does in virtually any other venue. All Caucasian Presidential candidates in the past two Presidential elections were certainly privileged in education, income, social status and position. There’s been no apology from any of them and if recognition of this longstanding practice is not forthcoming from our alleged leadership, it’s difficult to see it trickle down into the general population as quickly as it should have. Today, America is on a huge guilt trip, one that shouldn’t have ever happened. Exploiters on both sides of the aisle and on different sides of the racial spectrum keep the pot stirring as those who want to see a sensible, just and color-blind society evolve are ignored, marginalized, traumatized or outflanked politically, socially and morally. So Black men still have issues with fatherhood, Whites have trouble with fear and misunderstanding and both camps retreat into their sociological shelters for the endless nights of hoping for change….any positive change. Condescendence beats accountability, greed overrules fairness and tension neutralizes courageous attempts to work together as responsible and understanding people. Surviving 2020 might be the greatest achievement in many of our lifetimes. No New Year’s baby will be more roundly welcomed than Baby 2021. So make way for the baby. You’re doing your part for Covid-19; think what simple thing or things you could alter to help in your understanding of them, the “other side”, and their understanding of you. Put their shoes on for a day. The Coast seems to be doing a fairly good job of it, so keep it up and try to bring your game to another level without destroying your humane core values in the process. I want my grandchildren and great-grandchildren to be able to celebrate the fairness and goodness of this republic of ours and understand, though we aren’t perfect, we are God’s children in whatever form we envision, which means we are children for good. The Golden Rule still kicks tail and now it’s time for it to start taking names. -0REMINGTON 243 bolt action rifle, new in box with 10 boxes of ammo, $600. Call 228-697-4941.

Words to GREAUX by THE END OF SPRING TOMATO SEASON Experienced vegetable gardeners know that once daytime temperatures start reaching above 85-90°F, spring planted tomatoes start going downhill fast. If diseases like southern blight, early blight, lateblight, and bacterial wilt haven’t set in and caused severe leaf drop or plant death, then you’ve Will Afton probably noticed flowers dry up and fall off without setting fruit. Blossom drop in tomato in the heat of summer is not caused by a pathogen, insect, or nutritional deficiency. Researchers have determined that the actual cause is closely related to day and night time temperatures. When daytime temperatures reach above 85°F and night time temperatures above 72°, flowers will abort and drop off the plant before they have a chance to get fertilized. Older varieties like heirlooms tend to be a lot more sensitive than many hybrid tomato varieties but even hybrids will become susceptible once it gets warm enough. In order to help avoid this phenomenon it is recommended to plant a second crop of “heat set” tomatoes. These tomatoes will grow during the summer and be able to set fruit later in the season. A healthy crop of heat-tolerant tomatoes will produce tomatoes throughout the fall. Heat-set, hot-set, or heat-tolerant tomatoes are bred for their tolerance to high temperatures and perform well in Louisiana. More often than not, these varieties show relevance to heat in their names. There are several of these varieties that perform in Louisiana growing conditions. The varieties ‘Sunmaster’, ‘Heat Wave II’, Sun Master’, and ‘Talladaga’ produce smaller 7-8 ounce sized fruit while ‘Solar Set’, ‘Florida 91’, ‘Solar Fire’, and ‘Sun Leaper’ produce larger 9-10 ounce fruit. Get your hands on a copy of the LSU AgCenter’s Louisiana Vegetable Planting Guide (Pub. 1980) to see a full listing of heat-tolerant tomato varieties. It can be found at www.lsuagcenter.com/portals. communications/publications

PUMPKINS FOR OCTOBER Have you ever thought about growing pumpkins in your home garden? Pumpkin growers are starting to plant their crops now and so should you. One of the most important steps in growing pumpkins is to know when to plant in order to get a crop near the end of October. This will depend on the specific variety you choose to grow. Use the “days to maturity” information supplied on the seed packet to help you count backwards in the calendar. Let’s take for example the variety ‘Howden’. It says that it takes 115 days until maturity. That equates to 16 ½ weeks or slightly over 4 months. If we want pumpkins to finish around October then we need to count back 4 months all the way to mid-June. The “days to maturity” can be different depending on what variety you grow. As for a location, look for an area that receives at least 8 hours of direct sunlight and does not hold water after a rain storm for more than a couple of hours. Work and cultivate the soil down to 6-8 inches while adding in some organic compost material. Pumpkin plants will need space for the vines to grow. This is yet another value piece of information that can be found on the reverse side of the seed packet. Smaller vining and bush like types should be spaced 2-3 feet apart and larger growing varieties should be spaced 3-4 feet apart. I would suggest starting with a smaller growing varieties recommended by the LSU AgCenter such as ‘Aspen’, ‘Spirit’, or ‘Frosty’. The industry standard is ‘Howden’ and it typically what you will be purchasing from a retail store.

Louisiana Department of Wildlife & Fisheries LDWF Asks Saltwater Anglers to Complete Web-Based Survey on Spotted Seatrout Management Options The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries announced the 2020 spring inshore shrimp season will close at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, July 1, 2020 from the Mississippi/Louisiana state line westward to the eastern shore of South Pass of the Mississippi River except for: the open waters of the Louisiana portion of Mississippi Sound and the open waters of Breton and Chandeleur Sounds as bounded by the double-rig line described in R.S. 56:495.1(A)2. The open waters of the Louisiana portion of Mississippi Sound and the open waters of Breton and Chandeleur Sounds as bounded by the double-rig line described in R.S. 56:495.1(A)2. The open waters of the Louisiana portion of Mississippi Sound are defined as beginning at a point on the Mississippi/Louisiana state line at 30 degrees 10 minutes 21.95 seconds north latitude, 89 degrees 26 minutes 12.99 seconds west longitude; thence southerly to a point at 30 degrees 08 minutes 03.07 seconds north latitude, 89 degrees 26 minutes 27.05 seconds west longitude; thence southwesterly to a point at 30 degrees 04 minutes 40.57 seconds north latitude, 89 degrees 28 minutes 46.59 seconds west longitude; thence southeasterly to a point on the western shore of Three-Mile Pass (30 degrees 03 minutes 00.00 seconds north latitude, 89 degrees 22 minutes 23.00 seconds west longitude); thence northeasterly to a point on Isle Au Pitre (30 degrees 09 minutes 20.50 seconds north latitude, 89 degrees 11 minutes 15.50 seconds west longitude), which is a point on the double–rig line as described in R.S. 56:495.1(A)2. For a map detailing these closures see map above or click here. All state outside waters seaward of the Inside/Outside Shrimp Line, as described in LAC 76:VII.370 will remain open to shrimping until further notice. Data collected in recent weeks by LDWF biologists indicate an increased quantity of small, juvenile white shrimp within these waters. The decision to close these waters was made to protect these developing shrimp and provide opportunity for growth to larger and more marketable sizes. The areas that remain open will be monitored and closed when biologically appropriate. LDWF reminds shrimpers there is a size restriction on saltwater white shrimp taken in the inside and outside (offshore) waters of Louisiana. Saltwater white shrimp must be 100 count (whole shrimp per pound) or larger. This size restriction applies to the taking or possession of such shrimp aboard a vessel, EXCEPT from October 15 through the third Monday in December, when there is no possession count on saltwater white shrimp, taken or possessed. When more than 50 percent by weight of the saltwater shrimp taken or possessed is seabobs or brown shrimp, then the maximum allowable amount of undersized white shrimp taken or possessed should not exceed 10 percent by weight of the total saltwater shrimp taken or possessed. If compliance issues develop, remaining open areas will be closed. For more information, contact Peyton Cagle at (337) 491-2575 or pcagle@wlf.la.gov

By Paula Johnson

Hi, Everyone!

email me! PaulaJ3036@gmail.com

What a beautiful day this is starting out to be. I have been up since 4 a.m. My grandson’s cat, Yami, decided I needed to get up so he could have an early breakfast and cuddle before I started my day. I guess that is a good thing because I do have a lot on my agenda for today. Thankfully I made the Father’s Day Bouquets on Saturday so I just have to deliver them to the cemetery today. Carlea’, my granddaughter, usually goes with me. We enjoy our ride to Buras together. That is when I tell her about the way things used to be down home before Hurricane Katrina destroyed everything. She always wants to know and there are so many years of memories to share. We ride by where we used to live and reminisce. Of course, she doesn’t remember anything since she was only 2 months old at the time. But anyway, on with today’s project. Since it is Father’s Day I definitely had to make flower bouquets for the cemetery. I used the same flowers in all the bouquets, I just arranged them differently. THe flowers in the bouquet are Carnations, Iris, Limonium, Alstroemerias, and of course Leather Leaf. These are long lasting flowers, and by making sure the containers are full of water, they should last at least a week. I also like to spray the flowers themselves with water and flower food. Sometimes they last longer, it just depends on the weather and wind. I sincerely hope that you enjoyed your Father’s Day with that special man in your life. To all you Dad’s, Happy Belated Father’s Day.! Hope your day was as wonderful as you are. So what will your next project be? Mine.......Well, I am already thinking Fall and Winter. Received a package last week and can hardly wait to get started!!!! It’s going to be so much Fun!!! Sincerely, Paula Johnson

As the action continued we started getting some color and meat in our fish box. We were loosing many fish and throwing back a lot of shorts. During the day the sun screen was reapplied but at the end it did not help much. We were too busy fishing.

All about the kids! With the Covid shutting down the country all our graduating classes were denied of the usual fanfare. One of thechildren asked if she could have a fishing trip for her graduation. This request turned out to be a full fledged fishing rodeo. When the mother asked for some help on this request the fishermen came to her rescue in such force she had to turn away many charter captains. Thanks to those that participated and to those that offered but were not needed. Many local businesses donated their services to make this day very special for our 2020 SPHS graduates. Unfortunately many parents did not want their children to go to a large public gathering at that time for their own safety. It is understandable but I wish we could have done this for the entire class. This was their graduation celebration.

We came into the dock with a mixed bag of fish white trout to blue fish, from mangrove snapper to lane snapper, from look downs to fresh water catfish. Those were only a few but we ended up with the trophy as I had told the kids we would take home. Once again I would like to give my thanks to all that made this event special for all the graduates that were able to attend. Go forth and make a difference in your world. Life is Good!

They had a few trophies to be handed out. One of them was for the most variety. When the kids furst got on my boat I told them that trophy was ours. They had requested some snapper. With red snapper closed I had to target the other snapper we had. We did however have to go through many red snapper in order to get our bountiful catch.

We are allowed 1 trigger fish per person at 15 inches fork length. Although we did catch a lot of them we were only able to keep one of them. All the rest including this were thrown back.

What is TNR and why is it important?

11

12

13

14

15

Feral cats are common in neighborhoods across Louisiana. You may walk outside and see cats simply lying in the sun or wandering the streets. Feral cats by themselves are not an issue. In fact, feral cats have many benefits for the areas they inhabit such as rodent control! The issue with feral cats is what are commonly referred to as “nuisance behaviors”. These behaviors, like yowling, fighting or spraying, can be prevented by spaying/neutering the feral cats. TNR stands for TrapNeuter-Return, and it serves many purposes in protecting feral cat communities. By spaying and neutering feral cats, you can do your part in stopping nuisance behaviors for the feral cats in your neighborhood, and you can help protect against pet overpopulation.

The first step in TNR is identifying feral cats that have already been spayed or neutered. When a cat is trapped and brought to us for our TNR program, they are vaccinated for rabies and their ear tip is clipped. So if you see an ear tipped cat in your neighborhood, you can rest assured that the cat has been sterilized and vaccinated and is in compliance with Plaquemines Parish animals ordinances! If you see an ear-tipped cat, be sure to leave it alone so it can stay with its family. If you are physically willing and able to help trap cats in your neighborhood, check out our website page at www.la-spca.org/tnr to see how you can help! The Louisiana SPCA and the Plaquemines Parish Health Department have traps available for rent to help you trap feral cats in your neighborhood. Also, please be sure to never drop feral cats at our Plaquemines Parish Campus without speaking with a team member. If you do this, we have no way of knowing where the cat came from, and we can’t return it to its home. A feral cat’s neighborhood is their home, and we cannot take that away from them An important part of TNR is returning the cats to the same area in which they were trapped. Introducing cats to new areas can cause issues for that individual cat as well as the colony that has already been established there. The cats see their neighborhood as their home, and their colony is their family. Removing a cat from their home and family is ineffective and can cause more issues in the home colony as well. Removing cats from a particular area will not solve any feral cat issues. In fact, it will only create a “vacuum effect” in which new cats will occupy the same area that is now vacant. If you cannot help by trapping directly, but you want to protect the cats in your neighborhood, contact our Plaquemines Parish Campus at 504.934.6931 or Plaquemines Parish Animal Control at 504.934.6950 for assistance.

Our Plaquemines Parish Campus is open for adoptions again but our adoptions are being done by appointment only. This will ensure a limited number of people in the building at one time to help keep our adopters and team safe. To view the animals currently available for adoption visit www. la-spca.org/adoptables. To make an appointment, potential adopters must complete our online application Once submitted, our team will contact the adopter to schedule their appointment. On a side note, I’ve seen some online chatter about residents being frustrated about animals not being picked up by animal control. We do not provide animal controls services for the parish, only sheltering. Animal control issues should be directed to the Plaquemines Parish Animal Control at 504-934-6690.
