Louisiana Department of Wildlife & Fisheries Greater White-Fronted Goose Journey From Gulf Coast to Arctic Provides Invaluable Data to LDWF Biologists Yellow line denotes white-fronted goose’s journey from Gulf Coast to Alaska’s Arctic North Slope. May 31, 2019 - That waterfowl migrate north in the spring is certainly no revelation. But researching the migration patterns of geese and ducks is paramount for biologists to gain a better understanding of these species. A female greater white-fronted goose, also known as a spec or speckle belly, tagged in southwest Louisiana by Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) biologists in November of 2018 helped open the window into the incredible journey the birds make. The goose trekked more than 5,470 miles over the course of eight weeks on her spring migration, starting near the Texas-Mexico border to Alaska’s Arctic North Slope region, said biologist Paul Link, LDWF’s North American Waterfowl Management Plan Coordinator. “And that doesn’t account for all the daily foraging flights she made,’’ said Link, who captured and tagged the bird on Nov. 22, 2018. “It’s crazy to think she racked up more than 11,000 miles on her annual migration. Amazing birds. Amazing technology unlocking their mysteries.’’ The tagged goose is part of an LDWF study in which the primary goal is to determine use of habitats by white-fronts in Louisiana then look at status and trends of those habitats over time. Link started the project in 2015 and is collaborating with other scientists to assess other aspects of the data.

Link said there is an advantage to the birds getting to the region early so they can defend their preferred spot. “These birds have a nest bowl on the edge of a wetland,’’ Link said. “The male will chase other geese away from their chosen piece of real estate. Goslings are going to be flightless for 4-5 weeks after they hatch. They select nest sites where they can walk the young to prime grazing areas. If they don’t get a good spot, they may have a farther walk to get the goslings to a safe place.’’ The birds Link has captured span the entirety of the breeding range of white-fronts from east to west. “It’s an enormous area spanning 2,300 miles from eastern Nunavut (in northern Canada) to the North Slope of Alaska,’’ Link said. “I capture the birds as independently as possible during the fall and winter and they branch out and go their own way. It’s great to see that we’re getting birds from the entirety of their range, not just a couple of breeding colonies. We’re learning but still have a lot of work to do.” The tagged goose, which was harvested by a subsistence hunter on May 15 near the small Inuit village of Point Lay, made some long single-day flights as well, according to the data gathered. Link, who was able to retrieve the transmitter from the goose, said the data gathered from the study, which will continue for at least two more years, has been invaluable. For more information on the project and to learn how you can help, go to http://www.lawff.org/ geese or contact Link at plink@wlf.la.gov.

Seven Cited For Red Snapper Violations During Opening Weekend Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries agents cited seven individuals for alleged fishing violations during the opening weekend of the recreational red snapper season in St. Bernard and Plaquemines parishes. Agents cited James Allen, 55, of Pass Christian; Micheal Keel, 55, of Slidell; Shantelle Petrovich, 37, of Belle Chasse; Charles McNulty, 35, of Tampa, Florida; Gerald Popejoy IV, 27, of Pinellas Park, Florida; and Kristofer Haddon, 40, of Holiday, Florida; for over the daily limit of red snapper. Keel was also cited for intentional concealment of illegal fish when agents found him attempting to sink a red snapper that was over the limit.

White-fronts making this migration is nothing new. Band recovery data has documented this for decades and LDWF radio-marked birds have selected this area in previous years. What makes this individual bird’s trip so impressive is that it was tracked in near real time.

Agents also cited Joseph Bellande, 40, of Meraux, for possessing two red snapper without basic and saltwater fishing licenses and not having a recreational offshore landing permit.

New cell towers being constructed in Arctic villages and research stations enabled two data transmissions on this bird’s spring migration. Normally that data wouldn’t be retrieved until the bird initiated fall migration and hit cell service somewhere in Prairie Canada.

Agents found Allen in possession of three red snapper, Keel with four red snapper, Petrovich with seven red snapper, and McNulty, Popejoy and Park in possession of three snapper a piece. The daily possession limit of red snapper is two per licensed fisherman.

The transmitters gather more data than just a spot on a map.

Agents seized the 15 red snapper that were over the limit.

“The data these transmitters collect is just phenomenal,’’ Link said. “They collect everything from the air temperature and the percentage of cloud cover to the barometric pressure from the nearest weather station as well as accelerometer (how fast the bird flies) data. During flight we know she is heading 283 degrees at 117 kilometers per hour and is 2,083 meters in altitude. All that information can be pieced together to determine their energetic demands, or how much fuel they need to make those big moves.’’

Taking over the limit of red snapper carries a $100 to $350 fine and up to 60 days in jail. Intentional concealment brings a $900 to $950 fine and up to 120 days in jail. Possessing fish without the required licenses and not having the required recreational offshore landing permit carries up to a $50 fine and 15 days in jail.

She flew 636 miles non-stop to the Isabel, Kansas area on her first migration leg. She then flew 415 miles on another leg and 325 miles to Peace River area in Alberta, Canada. On May 4, she made a 770-mile non-stop flight from the Peace River to a frozen mountain lake 75 miles northeast of Whitehorse, Yukon Territory. The very next day she flew 1,038 miles to the Bering Land Bridge National Preserve off Alaska’s Bering Sea.

LDWF Urges Public to be Mindful of Displaced Wildlife During Morganza Spillway Opening Event May 28, 2019 – With the Morganza Spillway to be opened Sunday (June 2), wildlife species will seek higher ground and be displaced into habitat with which they may not be familiar. The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) urges the public to be especially cognizant of wildlife forced into populated areas by flood water from the spillway.

Rising waters force wildlife from flooded habitat into adjacent residential and commercial areas where they may come into contact with residents. LDWF urges citizens to minimize contact with “That’s roughly the distance between Baton Rouge and Minneapolis,’’ Link said. “That is some rugged country without any food along the way. Everything is still frozen solid and snow covered animals while they seek temporary refuge from their flooded home range. up there right now.’’ Wild animals not posing a threat to humans should be left alone and should not be fed. Feeding wild animals will encourage those animals to remain in the vicinity of a new food source when The reason they want to get back so quickly is to secure prime Arctic breeding spots in the they should be allowed to find natural habitat and food sources on their own. summer, Link said. Finally, she flew another 360 miles coming close to Russia during the flight and to her last known location on Alaska’s North Slope. “They’re an interesting species because they arrive down here (Louisiana Gulf Coast) really early,’’ Link said. “Most white-fronts don’t wait to get pushed down here by weather like some other waterfowl species. They depart the north when there is a lot of open water and food. Conversely, in the spring they’re chasing the ice line trying to go back north. They’re trying to be

Basic Tips: * Avoid areas where displaced wildlife has taken refuge. * Avoid interaction with and do not feed displaced wildlife. * Avoid roadways near flooded areas to reduce likelihood of disturbance and collisions with wildlife. Cont’d on pg. 7

Now, as promised, here is what my granddaughter, Carlea’, gave her classmates as a final gift before they all go their separate ways. Most of these kids started off in pre k together at O.L.P.H.. But now they are all heading to different high schools to pursue whatever lays ahead . I must admit while working on these, the memories were flooding our minds and at times rolling down our cheeks, some from laughter, others from moments gone, never to be again. We will miss the students and faculty. We wish them all the very best in whatever their future holds. This is how we made them. We used a rectangular piece of Baltic birch (which we purchased at a local craft store). We base coated with Deco Americana Buttermilk (after sealing the wood) and painted the inside, where the picture and printed vellum goes with Light Buttermilk. I used Metallic Gold to add the lines. I printed the wording on clear vellum and used Modge Podge to glue the vellum to the wood. Finally I went over the whole piece with Modge Podge. There are a lot of steps and the use of different mediums but, I feel the end results were worth it all. The kids loved them! They and their parents have a memory of a very special evening to look back on. Well, that’s my craft for this time. So what will your next project be? Mine.....I don’t know. But, I know it will be fun. Sincerely, Paula Johnson

Words to GREAUX by HIBISCUS

Seems like summer time temperatures are starting to ascend along the Gulf coast. Over the past couple of seasons, we have enjoyed cool spring weather. The cooler temperatures even extended into May. However, it looks like we will reach 90°F by the end of the week. When adding plants to the landscape during this time of year, think of some of the more heat tolerant choices such as hibiscus. Hibiscus plants are extremely common in southern gardens during the summer months. The genus Hibiscus belongs to the family Malvaceae which is made up of several hundred different species all native to Will Afton warm-temperate, subtropical, tropical regions. This helps to explain why they thrive during the warmest months of the year. There are a few hibiscus species that are native to the United States including Louisiana. The most common is the crimson eyed rose mallow, Hibiscus moscheutos. It can be found throughout the state growing in ditches along the roadside. You will notice them by their large 4-6 inch flowers with white petals and crimson red throats. The Confederate Rose, H. mutabilis, is a common tree-like shrub planted throughout the state. It can reach heights of 10 and 12 feet. The species name “mutabilis” hints at the plant’s most distinguishing characteristic. The flowers open white in the morning and fade to pink later in the evening before they close. Even though Confederate Rose is considered a perennial plant a hard freeze might kill it back to the ground, but with proper mulching the plant should return the following spring.

Most of us should be well acquainted with the Rose of Sharon plant, H. syriacus. A native of Asia this hibiscus has been popular to gardeners dating back to the Europeans in the year 1600. Due to relative ease of care and lack of pest problems, it is not uncommon for Rose of Sharon to live many years in the landscape. There are many well-known cultivars grown in the nursery trade to choose from. Try looking for the LSU AgCenter Super Plant selection from the spring of 2013, ‘Aphrodite’. It is reach heights of 8-10 feet tall and produces beautiful rose red blooms with dark DISPLAY HOME SALE @ magenta centers. Clayton Homes of Hammond. Of all of the other species of hibiscus written in this article, H. rosa-sinensis is the most tender when it comes to cool weather. On the other hand, these bushes will bloom all during the hammond.com warm season. After the first frost some die back will occur but when it does, go ahead and prune the whole bush to the ground and cover it with mulch. If you can protect the root system during FOR SALE: N. CAPT HOOP -- OUR FREEDOM Our Freedom Charters • 504-247-8459

Capt. Hoop/ Our Freedom / Life is Good! I had an offshore trip on a private boat. Our goal was to look for some tuna. It took a while but we were able to find a nice blackfin.

His action continued at a slow pace but when the action was there it was exciting for him. A black drum fights harder than a redfish but I think it is only because of the shape of it’s body giving it more resistance for the battle.

We had a big problem with sharks but were able to land another one each of the boys were feeding out the line, hooked, and landed them by themselves.

The sharks got so bad that we hot tired of fighting them and rigging new setups. We decided to go to another place and attempt to put some meat in the box. Once set up it was time to go to work. It did not take long before the box was looking good. The bite was slowing down so we were getting ready to call it and head in. While bring up a vermillion snapper I got hit hard. I thought I had another shark. This fish was pulling drag and running all around the boat trying to get away. It tangled up with other lines and was trying it’s best to get free. With the dirty water on top it was only at the last minute we saw it was a cobia. Unfortunately this trout forgot to invite his friends. I was actually surprised to see this fish in this The knife to cut the line was put away and the gaff came out. A nice ending to a good day. area. I had a gentleman who had never caught a redfish in his life. I explained to him that a striped bass is like a minnow compared to a redfish. He asked how he would know when he had a bite. I told him to just hold on. This 28 incher was a perfect way to indoctrinate him.

The only fish jumping in the boat were this mullet. The rest of the fish we had to work hard for.

We did get a limit of nice fish for our efforts and ended our day with this very nice fat girl that went back to continue to breed again. Life is Good!

For assistance with black bears that may be forced into populated areas by flood waters, call 1-337-262-2080. Alligators, Snakes: Flood waters will carry reptiles into populated areas where they may not normally be noted in significant numbers. Following the impact of flood waters, exercise extreme caution when salvaging possessions from flooded areas. Wildlife, especially reptiles, may remain in flooded areas and pose a safety threat. Venomous snake species in Louisiana include the canebrake rattlesnake, the copperhead, the cottonmouth, the eastern diamondback rattlesnake, the harlequin coral snake, the pygmy rattlesnake and the Texas coral snake. For more information on snake species found in Louisiana, including frequently asked questions, visit LDWF’s website at this link: www.wlf.louisiana. gov/resource/snakes-louisiana . Deer, Feral Hogs: Deer and feral hog populations within the Morganza Spillway represent the two large quadruped species that may appear in populated areas in significant numbers as flood waters move wild animals out of natural habitat. As is the case with all wild animals, how these species will react to humans in close contact situations is unpredictable. LDWF recommends allowing these species, when sighted individually or in groups, to move unimpeded through flooded areas as they seek higher ground.
