LDWF preliminary findings show flooding affecting shellfish, finfish Baton Rouge, LA –The recent Louisiana high water events along with the opening of the Bonne Carre’ Spillway are having a noticeable effect on the state’s supply of oysters, shrimp, crab and finfish, according to preliminary assessments from the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF). Preliminary results from monitoring of commercial harvest using data available as of June 6 show that for oysters on public water-bottoms, landings have declined by 80 percent from the average for the year-to-date and are 89 percent below the average for March-April. Statewide shrimp landings (brown and white shrimp combined) declined by 36 percent for the month of March, and 63 percent for the month of April, when compared to the five-year average. Statewide blue crab landings have decreased by 33 percent for the month of March, and 45 percent for the month of April when compared to the five-year average. Concerning finfish, preliminary findings show that landings are down for black drum, 53 percent in the Vermilion-Tech basin and down 43 percent year-to-date in the Calcasieu basin, commercial black drum landings are down 31 percent year to date. Recreational harvest of red drum and spotted seatrout are also reduced compared to other recent years, as monitored by LA Creel. LDWF personnel are also monitoring salinities as well as abundance of fish and shellfish in all the major estuaries of the coast. (For more a complete list of findings, please view the LDWF preliminary report at http://www.wlf.louisiana.gov/floodinfo) LDWF biologists also continue to monitor the flooding impacts on fishery and wildlife resources resulting from the first and the recent second Bonne Carré Spillway openings order by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Since January, there has been an increase in sea turtle and marine mammal strandings along the coast of the state. LDWF continues to work with the federal government and other agencies in assessing the situation. The true impact of the spillway opening and other high water events on fish and animals won’t be known for months as data continues to be collected and analyzed by both state and federal agencies.

Plaquemines Parish Man Arrested on Deer Violations Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries enforcement agents arrested a Buras man on June 6 for deer hunting violations in Plaquemines Parish. Agents arrested Blake J. Rigby, 25, for hunting without a bow license, failing to comply with deer harvest record requirements, intentional concealment of illegal wildlife and violating interstate commerce regulations. In October of 2018, LDWF agents received a complaint about Rigby taking a deer off the Delta National Wildlife Refuge (NWR). Agents made contact with Rigby and he admitted to taking the deer with a bow without having a bow license and without reporting the deer. Rigby also told agents that the illegally taken deer was in Alabama at a taxidermist. LDWF agents obtained an arrest warrant for Rigby on these charges and he turned himself in on June 6. Intentional concealment of illegal fish or wildlife and violating the interstate commerce regulations each carries a $900 to $950 and up to 120 days in jail. Failing to comply with deer reporting requirements brings a $100 to $350 fine and up to 90 days in jail. Hunting without a bow license carries a up to a $50 fine and 15 days in jail. Rigby may also face civil restitution totaling $1,624 for the replacement value of the illegally taken deer.

Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Seeks Public Help in Monitoring Bat Colonies June 17, 2019 – The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) is conducting bat colony monitoring in the state in an effort to survey for white-nose syndrome, a disease caused by a fungus that is responsible for more than 6 million bat deaths in the United States. Neither the disease nor the fungus, which is not a threat to humans, has been detected in Louisiana, said LDWF Wildlife Disease Biologist Nikki Anderson, who is overseeing the monitoring program. She said that’s why it’s so important to observe bat colonies in the state. In a citizen-science initiative, LDWF is encouraging state residents to help in the program. In fact, bats can be a farmer or gardener’s best friends because of the many insects they devour. They are also key in seed dispersal and pollination world-wide. “It’s estimated they save farmers billions annually in crop damage and reduced pesticide usage because of the insects they eat,’’ Anderson said. “They’re extremely beneficial. We don’t have any fruit bats or nectar feeding bats in Louisiana; all of our bat species consume insects.” White-nose syndrome was discovered in New York state in 2006-07. The fungus that causes the disease, Pseudogymnoascus destructans , has spread rapidly. It has not been found in Louisiana or Florida, the only two states with that distinction in the eastern United States.

Turlich, Jr. congratulates 23 new Young Marines that graduated from the Plaquemines Parish Sheriff’s Office (PPSO) Young Marines Program on Saturday, May 18. The recent graduates, known as the “Echo” class, were the fifth recruit class to graduate from the PPSO Young Marines Program since its inception in 2014. From leadership, physical fitness, Drug Demand Reduction, community service and citizenship – the recruits have been working on a variety of values and will continue to work toward improving themselves and their community through leadership, teamwork and discipline.

We also want to recognize the many adult volunteers who give their time and talents to mentor our Young Marines.” The Young Marines is a national non-profit youth education and service program for boys and girls, age 8 through the completion of high school. The Young Marines promotes the mental, moral and physical development of its members. The program focuses on teaching the values of leadership, teamwork and self-discipline, so its members can live and promote a healthy, drugfree lifestyle. Words to GREAUX by MAGNIFICENT MAGNOLIAS As the weather turns hot, many landscape plants seem to idle as a way to cope with high temperatures of summer. Not the magnolia! Several species within the genus of Magnolia bloom and thrive during the summer months. The magnificent white flowers are familiar to not only gardeners but also florists and interior designers. The name comes out of respect for a famous French botanist, Pierre Magnol, who lived in Montpellier, a city on the Mediterranean coast in southern France. Mr. Magnol was one of the first scientists to group plants by similar morphological features. This is one of the predicates of what we Will Afton know refer to as plant families. Carl Linnaeus, the creator of binomial nomenclature (scientific names) solidified the genus name when he used it to give southern magnolia its scientific name of Magnolia grandiflora. The southern magnolia gets most of the spotlight but there are a few other species that are found in the trade and sought out by gardeners. The saucer magnolias (M. x soulangiana) are pretty when they bloom in late winter and early spring. Coming in between 20-30ft tall and 15-20ft wide, these magnolias feature blooms in different shades of pink. Sweetbay magnolias (M. virginiana) are native trees that reach 3-50ft tall and 20-30ft wide. In the wild they typically grown with a single trunk, but in the trade it is common to see more than one cutting in the pot, giving them a multi-trunked appearance. Sweetbay magnolias have a light green colored leaf with silvery undersides and produces white blooms in the summer. The bigleaf magnolia (M. macrophylla) is larger growing specimen averaging over 50ft tall and 20-30ft wide. As the common name implies, the leaves can be up to 30 inches long and 8-12 inches wide. The flowers are some of the biggest averaging up to 14 inches or more in diameter. All of the species listed above are deciduous, meaning they lose all of their foliage in the fall and winter. The most iconic species is the southern magnolia (M. grandiflora). These evergreen trees reach heights over 50ft tall and over 50ft wide. They produce large white fragrant flowers during the summer months. They are very versatile in the landscape. Southern magnolias can be used a basic backyard shade tree or they can be planted in a line to provide screening and privacy. There are a couple of popular cultivars available in the trade. ‘D.D. Blanchard’ grows 30-50ft tall and 20-30ft. It still blooms the same fragrant white flowers, but the foliage sets it apart. The leaves are a dark green and the undersides are a rusty, almost orange color. ‘Little Gem’ is the most compact option available. It reaches 25-30ft tall and 10-15ft. Both the leaves and flowers are more compact than other cultivars of southern magnolia. With all of the different selections of magnolia throughout the region it can be difficult to make a decision. Take a look at magnolias in the landscape as they bloom through the rest of the season. There is plenty of time to make a decision. The best time to plant a magnolia, or other large trees and shrubs, is during the dormant season (November through February). So take notes now, make a selection, and plant later in the year.
