Tony’s Take MISSISSIPPI OPENS WITH SLIGHTLY HIGHER COVID NUMBERS As we meander into the last days of what has been a very pleasant Deep South springtime, pandemic safeguard guidelines are being altered as the natural chaffing of the American spirit pushes against the restrictions that can seem so Draconian. Most people I have met - virtually all, in fact - seem to have little problem keeping a mask on during shopping or walking. I wear one less often than I should to keep the general population’s healthiness in mind, donning it as much for the psychological healing as the physical. But Southerners are neither shamers or inconsiderate of their local world and if the mask isn’t on from the go, it hangs around the neck, ready to slide in place as the scenario plays out. Even local protests hardly altered the script. Social distancing was put on hold for a short period of time but the masks stayed on and that’s an easler preventative than to stand there trying to calculate two yardsticks worth of distance from the next person. Even so, Mississippi had a spike in Covid cases following the Memorial Day weekend. The cause hasn’t been fully determined, if it ever will be, but having hundreds or thousands on local beaches in a permissive environment probably led to most of the numbers spike.

Meanwhile, those who invested heavily in Plexiglass last winter are well on their way to riches for retirement. I’m almost tempted to write my request on those beautifully clean acrylics when I enter an establishment, much as weathermen and ladies did in the early days of television weather graphics. I worked at the NBC TV local affiliate in San Francisco, where the Weather Girl was required to write the weather trackings backwards on such a clear board. The first lady lasted about a year. Then, just before I left the station, a lovely young woman came into my lobby to apply for the job. It was Suzanne Somers first professional performance job and the San Francisco Bay Area native was on her way. The phasing in of business reopenings seems to be working as well as can be expected. In Louisiana, Phase 3 came about virtually seamlessly and restaurant personnel are beginning to smile broadly again. Governor John Bel Edwards, an outlier Democratic governor if there ever was one in this environment, has done a more than credible job of phasing in normalcy, In fact, several Democratic state leaders, such as the governor of Maryland, have been quietly bringing their states back to today’s normal post-emergency pandemic reopening. Most Republican governors are doing the same and any indications of someone throwing a monkey wrench into the transitions in Louisiana and Mississippi are not visible on the horizon. As we progress into our second summer in Mississippi, Penny Plus will be expanding heavier into advertising categories that seem to be underserved on the Coast in particular. Your readership assures us that we made the right move when we filled the gap left by the old Penny Pincher and our advertisers agree. As things heat up both weather-wise and in advertising lineage, we will also be expanding our reach with more local editorial copy as the paper grows income-wise and we can afford to do so. Words to GREAUX by WHEN THE ANTS GO MARCHING IN The red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta, has been causing trouble all throughout the southeast ever since it was introduced in Mobile, AL back in the 1940s. Since then, it has currently spread to 13 states in the southern US from North Carolina to Florida and westward to parts of California. One of Will Afton the major concerns of the red imported fire ant is the sting. Worker ants can sting repeatedly and will attack anything that disturbs their mounds or food sources. To make it even worse, these worker ants will bite you at the same time. The symptoms of the sting resemble burning and itching followed by the formation of a pustule. If you have ever encountered this, then you know how much of a problem these pesky creatures can be. They prefer to create mounds in wide open sunny areas like parks, lawns, meadows, and raised bed vegetable planters. Though we may not be able to rid imported red fire ants from the region we can however do a few things to keep them out of our yards and away from our houses. It can be confusing when walking through the ant control section at a home improvement store with all the different products labeled for use on ants. There are two types of products that are used to help manage fire ant populations to keep them under control: baits and contact insecticides. When used in combination they can efficiently reduce the number of fire ant mounds in your yard. Fire ant baits are pesticides that are combined with corn grits and soybean oil and applied to the entire area. While out foraging, worker ants will take the bait back to the mound where it is then shared with the queen, which then she is either killed or becomes infertile. The downside to using baits alone is that they take a considerable amount of time before their effects are seen. They may require several weeks and even months to be effective but 80-90% control can be achieved. Some of the more popular bait products are Amdro Fire ant Bait and Extinguish Plus. Contact insecticides are used as a fast-acting control method and are applied directly to each mound. Effects can be seen within a few hours. You will find several options to choose from including Ortho Fire Ant Killer, Garden Tech Over’n Out, Bayer Advanced Fire Ant Killer, and Bengal Ultra Dust 2X. Many of these products contain the same active ingredient so instead of asking which one is the best, the better question to ask yourself is am I applying it properly? A lot of people are looking for ways to control red imported fire ants in vegetable garden or backyard fruit tree situations. Spinosad products are labeled for such uses and Fertilome Come and Get It II Fire Ant Killer is popular at local independent retailers like feed stores and plant nurseries. Important information such as any safety precautions, where to use, and application instructions can be found on the product label. -0-

Pearl River/Honey Island Shooting Range to Re-open June 12, LDWF Announces June 10, 2020 – The Pearl River/Honey Island Shooting Range at Pearl River Wildlife Management Area (WMA) will re-open Friday (June 12) at 11 a.m., the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) announced. Needed bridge repairs have been completed allowing access to the range through the cooperative efforts of LDWF, the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development and the Southeast Louisiana Firearms Safety Inc. (SELFS). The range will be operating under Louisiana’s Phase-2 Covid-19 guidelines and restrictions until further notice. This may result in limited availability and users are asked to be patient, maintain their social distance and abide by all range safety officer directions. For more information, go to https://www.honeyisland.org/ .

LDWF Asks Saltwater Anglers to Complete Web-Based Survey on Spotted Seatrout Management Options The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF), Louisiana State University and Louisiana Sea Grant have released a survey to gather public input on spotted seatrout management options. This survey is an additional effort to collect public input on these options; we also conducted eight statewide public meetings earlier this year, then an email survey sent to more than 10,000 randomly-selected saltwater anglers. Your opinion is a critical step in the fishery management process. Because we have determined several management options that will allow the spotted seatrout stock to recover, we will compile the information we receive from all public input forums and present a summary of angler preferences to the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission for their consideration. Our latest assessment of spotted seatrout in Louisiana revealed that the stock is overfished— i.e. the size of the spawning population is below the minimum level established for the stock. When a stock is overfished, we must take action to rebuild the population back to (or above) the target level. We are currently considering several options for management changes to reduce harvest levels and allow the stock to recover. We encourage you to review the information at https://www.wlf.louisiana.gov/page/ spotted-seatrout to learn more about the current status of spotted seatrout and these potential management changes. Take the survey: Spotted Seatrout Management Options Survey Your participation in this survey is completely confidential. If you have any questions or comments regarding the survey, please direct them to Jason Adriance at 504-284-2032 or jadriance@wlf.la.gov.

By Paula Johnson

Hi, Everyone!

email me! PaulaJ3036@gmail.com

Hope you all are doing well and these hot days are treating you kindly. I have been doing some yard work. I must admit, being outside has been a nice change from being shut up, even though the sweat has been rolling down my face. Reminds me of my childhood. Those carefree summer days, when after chores were done, the rest of the day, we hung out with our friends. Such different times we live in. I have done a piece this time with multimedia. This was an experience and so much fun to do. This is a Sandy LaFlore design. For this you can use either a wood or metal arrow. You will also need DecoPage, tissue paper or newspaper, stamps, ink (recommend Staz-On), and of course, either Americana or Ceramcoat acrylic paint. Prep your arrow by painting it either black or dark brown, While it is drying tear pieces of the tissue paper to fit the arrow. Apply the Deco-Page to your arrow and place the paper on top. When dry apply a thin layer of Deco-Page. After drying you can stamp and stencil your piece in various places. Yes, some of this will get covered up. Apply your pattern and paint as you normally would. After you are finished painting and your piece is completely dry, apply a final coat of Deco-Page. After that is thoroughly dry apply 2 to 3 coats of varnish. Add your Jute to hang your piece and display where you would like. I enjoyed making this, and will make other designs using the same process. Well, that’s my project for this time. So what will your next project be? Mine, I don’t know. But, I know it will be lots of fun. Sincerely, Paula Johnson

CAPT HOOP -- OUR FREEDOM Our Freedom Charters • 504-247-8459

Capt. Hoop/ Our Freedom / Life is Good!

ARCHIVED STORY FROM 7.04.19

Fishing has been good at times and tough at others. I had the opportunity to take a friend fishing. She had not caught a redfish in about 40 years. The fishing was very slow as we had an incoming tide and windy conditions. This was her first. It had very beautiful colors.

After fighting hardheadeds and sting rays and feeding the rat reds she hooks a good one. This one tested her wrist. The fight was reel as it started her around the boat. Now she not only had her first in about 40 years but her biggest redfish ever. We had a great day on the water.

CALL US TODAY...SELL IT TOMORROW! When I was washing the boat I got a call that one of the girls on the other boat had taken first place biggest slot redfish. Outstanding job. The 2 sisters on my boat even had a double. I really enjoyed the kids on the boat. It was a fun filled day with a first place finish e outcome.

Although the picture does not reflect it this trip was under windy conditions. I was forced to fish in protected waters. Most places were dirty so I had to find a slight water change or some sign of life.

Our chances of limiting out were not looking too good. The biggest 2 fish were caught by the same guy.

I had a 2 boat group of young ladies in a school fishing tournament. There were 5 of them. 2 on my boat and 3 on the other boat. They were looking for the heaviest redfish under 27 inches.

He made a point to let his friends know about it. Building memories and friendship.

4 of the girls had fish of 26 and a half inches or bigger. 2 on my boat and 2 on the other boat. They left for the weight in with a very good feeling of one of the fish placing.

The trophy was this nice flounder. We ended up with 2 of them for the day. Life is Good!

Are you ready for Hurricane Season? Four tips from the Louisiana SPCA on how to prepare during the pandemic NEW ORLEANS – Today marks the official start of hurricane season and the Louisiana SPCA urges pet-owners to create a COIVD-19 conscious evacuation plan that includes their pets! Pets are members of the family and should be included in all disaster preparations. Did you know that before Hurricane Katrina, it’s estimated that roughly 259,400 families owned pets in New Orleans? Because there was no formal evacuation plan for residents needing assistance or for those with pets, as many as 104,000 pets were left behind. 44% of those that chose not to evacuate did so because they refused to leave their pets. Natural disasters such as hurricanes and floods are out of our control. However, planning for a disaster is something we can all do. Just like other members of your household, emergency planning for your pets requires supplies and advance preparation. The supplies you gather should be able to provide for your pet for at least five days. Are you ready for hurricane season? · Does your pet have up-to-date vaccines and do you have copies of your pet’s medical records? All boarding facilities and veterinarian offices will require proof of immunization before accepting pets. . With vet offices being booked several weeks out, make your appointment today. · Are your pet’s ID tags up-to-date? If your contact information or address have changed be sure to get your pet new ID tags. · Does your pet have a microchip? This is a permanent form of identification that can be your pet’s round-trip ticket home in the event they get lost. Need a microchip? Schedule an appointment at the Louisiana SPCA’s Community Clinic. · Compile a list of places to go. The most ideal place during the pandemic will be pet-friendly hotels. While you can consider staying with family or friends outside of the strike zone be cautious of their potential exposure to COVID-19 and take necessary steps to protect your family. Finding a safe place to evacuate to can be challenging with COVID-19 but preparation is key! Evacuation Checklist ·

Food and water. Keep food in an airtight, waterproof container. Water for pets should be in addition to the water you need for yourself and family. · Medicine and medical records. Keep an extra supply of medicine your pet takes on a regular basis in a waterproof container. All boarding facilities and veterinarian offices require proof of immunization before accepting animals. · Collar with ID tag; harness or leash. Your pet should wear a collar with its rabies tag and identification at all times. · Documents. Place copies of your pet’s microchip information, registration, adoption papers, vaccination documents and medical records in a clear plastic bag or waterproof container. · Crate or other pet carrier. Carriers should be large enough for your pet to stand up, completely turn around and lie down. Mark your name, address, phone number and an alternate contact on the carrier. · Sanitation. Include pet litter, newspapers, towels, plastic trash bags and cleaners in your evacuation bag so you can pick up after your pet.

Our Plaquemines Parish Campus is open for adoptions again but our adoptions are being done by appointment only. This will ensure a limited number of people in the building at one time to help keep our adopters and team safe. To view the animals currently available for adoption visit www. la-spca.org/adoptables. To make an appointment, potential adopters must complete our online application Once submitted, our team will contact the adopter to schedule their appointment. On a side note, I’ve seen some online chatter about residents being frustrated about animals not being picked up by animal control. We do not provide animal controls services for the parish, only sheltering. Animal control issues should be directed to the Plaquemines Parish Animal Control at 504-934-6690.
