Oyster tags, a requirement for commercial oyster harvesters, will now be available for purchase at the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries New Orleans office located in the Center for Entergy and Resource Management at 2045 Lakeshore Drive within UNO’s Research and Technology Park. Tags can be purchased from 8 a.m. to 4:30 in Room 422.
Louisiana Department of Wildlife & Fisheries Shrimp Season to Open May 20 in the Remaining State Outside Waters The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries announced that the portion of state outside waters between the Atchafalaya River Ship Channel at Eugene Island westward to western shore of Freshwater Bayou Canal shall reopen to shrimping at 6:00 a.m. on May 20, 2019. The area to open is defined as follows: The eastern boundary line originates at the Atchafalaya River Ship Channel at Eugene Island as delineated by the red buoy line at 29 degrees 22 minutes 14.933 seconds north latitude, -91 degrees 22 minutes 58.916 degrees west longitude and ends at a point on the three mile line as described in R.S. 56:495(A) at 29 degrees 18 minutes 33.889 seconds north latitude, -91 degrees 26 minutes 16.049 seconds west longitude. The western boundary line originates on the western shore of Freshwater Bayou Canal at 29 degrees 32 minutes 03 seconds north latitude, -92 degrees 18 minutes 33 degrees west longitude and ends at a point on the three mile line as described in R.S. 56:495(A) at 29 degrees 29 minutes 02 seconds north latitude, -92 degrees 19 minutes 34 seconds west longitude. SUMMERTIME SALVIAS
It seems as though summer is already here. Our first week of 90° temperatures and its just May. As we get closer and closer to summer, gardeners will be looking to plant flowers that can withstand the brutal onslaught of long, hot summer days. With all of the different species of flowers available for use in Louisiana, some start to struggle when daytime temperatures start averaging above 85° F. The genus Salvia is interesting to study. They are a member of Lamiaceae, the mint family, which gives them opposite leaf arrangement Will Afton and square stems. Botanists have identified three different areas of origination: the Americas, the Mediterranean, and Eastern Asia. Early on, they were primarily used as ingredients in herbal remedies. It wasn’t until the middle of the 20th century where salvias became popular among those who garden for pleasure. Currently, Salvias are gaining popularity in niche gardening designs like butterfly, hummingbird, and pollinator gardening because of the abundance of nectar produced in flowers. If there were one plant that would represent all pollinator plants, Salvias would do it proudly. Because of their popularity, you will find many species of Salvia available at nurseries and garden centers. Salvia spendens offer some old and new choices. Most are familiar the cultivar ‘Red Hot Sally’, a small compact plant that reaches a height around 12 inches and produces a wonderful show of bright red flowers on spikes. Another series of S. spendens is gaining some attention. The cultivars ‘Lighthouse Red’ and ‘Lighthouse Purple’ are similar in appearance to ‘Red Hot Sally’ but they get about twice the size and offer a second color option. The ‘Lyrical’ series of S. nemorosa is also interesting to note. ‘Lyrical Silvertone’ is special in that it is two toned in color with deep purple and silver flower spikes. It reaches a medium size of 24 inches tall. Salvias can also be used for height in the back of a bed or as centerpieces in the middle of large island beds. S. microphylla ‘Hot Lips’ is a larger growing species. It reaches a height around 36 inches tall and produces gorgeous red and white flowers. S. greggii ‘Flame’ is another larger growing species that reaches a similar height but produces bright red flowers. Many of the salvias mentioned in the last paragraph will re-seed themselves at the end of the season and return the following year as newly sprouted plants. This is usually a positive characteristic of plants but sometimes re-seeding plants can move around on their own in the garden. The mealy cup sage, S. farinacea, is a root-hardy salvia that will return each year from the previous root system. There are two cultivars planted at the LSU AgCenter’s Hammond Research Station, ‘Henry Duelberg’, a purple selection and ‘Augusta Duelberg’, a white selection. Both of which survived the winter weather event back in January of 2018. The salvias listed in this article are only but a few that are sold at local nurseries and garden centers. You’ll have to get out and see what is available near you.

We were very lucky to land this hard fighting beast. It went back to breed and fight again. Joe has the hook to add to his story. 2 days if catching made for some great story’s to tell my son in law as they have morning coffee together back in Kentucky..
If you love to fish this is the place to be. When you love fishing some times you get a bit excentric. The good fishing is here. I have been running trips on a regular basis. There were some days it took a while and other days it was a one stop limit. We are still being challenged by the exceptionaly high river that looks like will remain that way for another month. On one of my days off I got with Lee Nguyen, Joe Harris and his wife Jennifer. Our target was vermillion snapper. At our first stop Lee brings in a very good scamp grouper. The place we tied up was over a lot of hangs and not much happening so we moved. Being familiar with this area I suggested we move to a further out rig that usually has a different current than the others in the area. Lee said he never gets much off it and I said it is my favorite one in this group of rigs. The current was different and we were able to fish.
I did 2 days for Champion Charters under conditions that prevented them from going offshore. The first day was outstanding in with steady action. The son was disappointed because he was missing many fish. He was leaving too much slack in the line. It was hard to keep contact with the bait under such windy conditions. He did enjoy the fight of this black drum. It took a lot of drag and had him going around the boat. We returned it to fight again. At this size and bigger they get parasites in their meat so we have no desire to keep them. We had a double that made for a good father and son picture to put on the wall at home. Due to conditions and scheduling problems they were never able to make it offshore.
We dialed into the vermillion snapper and the game was on. The sharks were very bad. The challenge was to reel in the fish fast enough to keep it away from the sharks. We managed to save most of them for our box but the tax man managed to take his share. Some of the sharks were even taking our lines on the way down. On one drop I got hit by a shark and the fight was on. I hate fighting them because it takes up too much fishing time and can tangle up lines unless the other people stop fishing. As it got closer to the boat this shark looked a bit different. I had a nice cobia on the line. A nice addition to our fish box. With a limit of vermillion snapper, a scamp, cobia, some good mangrove snapper, and a few strawberry grouper. It was a very successful day. I had Joe and his wife from Kentucky for 2 days. We did very well on the redfish. Our problem was the fish were all too big. It took us a long time to get a limit of keepers but they loved the hard fish fighting action. This beauty which went back fell in the net as the hook slipped out of its mouth.
There were many fish we released to fight as well as getting our limit of keeper slot fish. The spots on this beauty were well deserving of a photo opp before we let it swim free. Red snapper season is starting Memorial day weekend and will be every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Until our state quota is reached. Life is Good!
