The men could also face having their oyster harvester license revoked by LDWF for up to one year. Violators can be sentenced to perform 40 hours of community service and only harvest oysters from a vessel equipped with a vessel monitoring device for up to one year.

LDWF Announces Registration for WETSHOP 2019 THE TAV, 7TH AND 8TH GRADE ART STUDENTS FROM BELLE CHASSE ACADEMY VISITED THE OGDEN MUSEUM. THEIR VISIT CULMINATED IN THE CREATION OF A PIECE OF KINETIC SCULPTURE IN THE STYLE OF LIN EMERY.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) is pleased to announce WETSHOP 2019, a coastal awareness workshop for science, history and social studies teachers. The workshop is scheduled for July 7 – 12, 2019 at the LDWF Grand Isle Research Lab. The focus of this 6-day workshop is to provide teachers with an in-depth look at issues related to wetland ecology and coastal land loss in Louisiana. Participating teachers will accrue 55 hours of instruction covering a wide variety of topics including wetland ecology, fisheries management, and coastal restoration. Teachers will also spend a portion of each day in the field learning about maritime forests, barrier island beach ecology, coastal restoration projects, bird life, marsh and swamp habitats and marine organisms. Workshop experiences provide ideas to incorporate Louisiana phenomena based science in classrooms at all grade levels. All participating teachers will receive standards-based correlated wetland lessons and many other educational resources from numerous sponsoring agencies and organizations. Lodging and meals are provided once participants reach the workshop site. Upon completion of the workshop, each participant will receive a $250.00 stipend. An additional stipend is available during the academic year upon completion of a wetland stewardship project. WETSHOP is sponsored by LDWF in partnership with the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Foundation, Barataria Terrebonne National Estuary Program (BTNEP) and the Louisiana Sea Grant College Program. WETSHOP is also a collaborative effort with partners that provide experts in the field for presentations and educational materials. These agencies/organizations include: BTNEP, Louisiana Department of Natural Resources, Louisiana Nature Conservancy, Louisiana Sea Grant College Program, Coastal Planning Protection and Restoration Act, and Louisiana Universities Marine Consortium. Teachers interested in WETSHOP 2019 can visit http://www.wlf.louisiana.gov/wetshop or contact Angela Capello at 318-623-4661 or acapello@wlf.la.gov with questions.

Shrimp Season to Open April 25 in a Portion of State Outside Waters

Louisiana Department of Wildlife & Fisheries Three Men Arrested for Oyster Violations in St. Bernard Parish A Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Enforcement Agent along with St. Bernard Deputies arrested three men for alleged commercial fishing violations on April 9 in St. Bernard Parish. An LDWF agent, with assistance from the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff’s Office, arrested Raymond Nehlig Jr ,35, of Violet, Kenneth Marrero, 42, of St. Bernard, and Brandon Perez, 32, of Meraux, for unlawfully taking oysters off a private lease and failing to have written permission. Nehlig Jr was also cited for operating a vessel while under license suspension and taking commercial fish without a commercial gear license. Perez was also cited for resisting an officer and flight from an officer. An LDWF agent was on patrol south of the Mississippi River Gulf Outlet channel when he observed a vessel actively dredging for oysters in Lake Coquille around 1 p.m. on April 9. The agent made contact with the subjects on the vessel and determined they were dredging on a lease without permission. As the agent was following the vessel back for arrest and booking purposes, Perez jumped from the vessel and swam towards the marsh near Hopedale Bayou. The agent with St. Bernard Parish deputies were able to apprehend Perez. All three men were booked into the St. Bernard Parish Jail.

Hi, Everyone!

email me! PaulaJ3036@gmail.com

Hi Everyone, Hope you all had a wonderful Easter. The weather was absolutely beautiful! We had some family and friends over. We spent the whole day outside eating way too many crawfish and enjoying everyone’s company. We hadn’t done that in such a long time. So many changes. We did have a creative day. But unfortunately by the time I remembered to take pictures of the crafts that were made, the children were gone. We used the empty containers plastic containers that strawberries come in and made little Easter baskets. We used construction to make bunny faces, eggs, and crosses and glued them onto the containers after they were colored. We then glued them onto the baskets. When the glue was dried we used pipe cleaners to make a handle, added some Easter grass and we were done with out creations. The kids loved them. Of course, they didn’t hold much in the way of Easter eggs and candy but, it was a fun thing to do and kept them busy for a little while. It was a good day and I enjoyed it having everyone over. I am waiting on a order of craft supplies to arrive. Something fun to great your guests at the front door. I think you will like it. At least I hope so. Well, that’s it for this time. I hope your Easter was Blessed with family, friends, and children having fun and remembering what Easter really means. Well, that’s it for this time. So what will your next craft project be? Mine....I don’t know. But, I know it will be lots of fun. Sincerely, Paula Johnson

NEW LOUISIANA SUPER PLANTS FOR SPRING

Will Afton

Most people are familiar with LSU AgCenter Super Plant program, a promotional program advertising tried and true plants that perform well in all of Louisiana’s climates. We promote different flowers, shrubs, and trees each year because of their exceptional beauty and endurance in the landscape throughout the state. The LSU AgCenter promotes LA Super Plants during the spring and fall. This spring, we are promoting three wonderful plants.

The INTENZ Classic Celosia, Celosia argentea, is a full sun loving bedding plant that will bloom from late spring well into the fall. Most gardeners should be familiar with Celosias. They perform well in hot summer gardens and provide vibrant color. The INTENZ Classic Celosia has bold purple flowers and nice attractive foliage. The flowers are very abundant and will last all season long. The flowers also produce nectar, which makes them extremely attractive to bees and butterflies. The plants will get about 16-18 inches tall and slightly narrower around 12-14 inches wide. The small compact size makes them an excellent choice in flowerbeds and containers. One of the most common shrubs seen in and around gardens in the south is the hydrangea and they are hard to miss when in bloom. The LSU AgCenter is promoting the ‘Limelight’ hydrangea, Hydrangea paniculata. It produces a large panicle shaped bloom that creates visual impact in the garden. Its bloom period starts in early summer and will progress through early fall. Look to grow this hydrangea in an area that receives protection from the afternoon sun. It will grow about 6-8 feet tall and wide. The best thing to note about ‘Limelight’ hydrangea is that it blooms from first year wood. This allows the plant to be pruned late winter and early spring. We don’t just promote pretty flowers with the LA Super Plant program. We promote all types of plants. The last plant that will be promoted for spring 2018 is the ‘Little Gem’ Southern magnolia. The southern magnolia, Magnolia grandflora, is a common site in Louisiana and all across the south. The big stately evergreen trees bloom pure white flowers. The LSU AgCenter is promoting a cultivar of southern magnolia called ‘Little Gem’. It produces smaller leaves and smaller flowers than the southern magnolia. The one thing that sets in apart is that it stays smaller and more compact. Little Gem magnolias grow to heights of 25 and 30 feet with a spread of around 10-12 feet. Their smaller size makes them great choices for landscape beds, patios and courtyards.

FRAGRANT FLOWERS One of the trademark shrubs of the south, gardenias are popular choices for Louisiana gardeners. Their signature characteristic is the pure white, extremely fragrant blooms seen all through mid to late spring, lingering into the summer. Their evergreen foliage, heat tolerance and variation in size are a few other reasons on why so many gardener choose to grow them. Like azaleas and camellias, gardenias prefer an acidic soil with an optimal pH range between 5 and 6. Have your soil tested through the LSU AgCenter to determine your soil’s pH value. Elemental sulfur can be applied to the soil if you need to lower the pH. Be sure to choose a location that drains well, receives full to part sun and near your back patio in order to get the most out of your new plant. Follow proper plant spacing depending on mature size of each variety. Scales and whiteflies can be problematic pests during the growing season but can easily be controlled using horticultural oil or insecticidal soap sprays. There are several varieties of gardenia available in the trade. All of which produce white, fragrant flowers. ‘Dwarf Gardenia’ is the lowest growing of all. It will get 1-2 feet tall and 3-4 feet wide. It has a spreading type growth habit. ‘Frost Proof’ gardenia has an upright growth and tops out around 4 feet tall. It gets its name from the fact that it is more cold tolerant than other varieties but that isn’t really a factor in South Louisiana. The ‘Frost Proof’ gardenia was selected as a Louisiana Super Plant back in the spring of 2011 for its outstanding performance.

PLAQUEMINES FISHING REPORTS

CAPT HOOP -- OUR FREEDOM Our Freedom Charters • 504-247-8459

Capt. Hoop/ Our Freedom / Life is Good! There is good news to report even though the fog, rain, and high water is still around. First off Delta Marina is now open. Mitch is working very hard at making it a place to be proud of once again. I am happy to see this marina getting the TLC it deserves. The other good news is the redfish are on fire. The problem at this time is finding keepers. Most of the ones we have lately have been over slot. Such a problem to have. My last outing out of over 50 reds I tossed back 2 rat reds. The trout are starting to show up where it is worth the effort to target them. Some limits have been coming into the docks. I have been running a lot of inshore trips for Champion Charters. One of which was with the swivel sisters. All 3 of them were accomplished anglers. This made my day a lot easier. As previously mentioned the bigger fish are doing very well. We a lot of good fishing in order to put a limit of keepers in the box. This was a nice doubleheader while searching for some meat.

It was yet another successful day on the water.

At the end of the day we did find a limit of slot fish and a good black drum to add to the dinner table.

On another Champion Charter trip I had the Tougaw family. This was a 2 boat trip. We were into some very good red fishing right off the bat. I am glad to see things starting to fall into a pattern. Once the river starts falling the fish will be moving into the summer haunts and we will have to follow them.

This day produced some beautiful looking fish.

For those who think hooking a fish and releasing it will kill it because it is bleeding think again. We caught this fish and it was very healthy.the injured area was healed well . The fish did not look stressed or handicapped in any way. I have caught many injured fish that have healed well in my life time. Some had broken backs and even chunks out of their bodies. Nature gives them an ability to survive that most people do not know about. Life is Good!
