LANDSCAPE TO DO LIST FOR SPRING
AMENDED: Shrimp Season to Open in a Portion of State Outside Waters on April 17, 2020 The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries announced that the portion of state outside waters between Calliou Boca and the Atchafalaya River Ship Channel at Eugene Island shall reopen to shrimping at 12:00 p.m. (noon) on April 17, 2020.
The eastern boundary line originates on the northwest shore of Caillou Boca at 29 degrees 02 minutes 46.00 seconds north latitude, -90 degrees 50 minutes 27.00 seconds west longitude and ends at a point on the three-mile line as described in R.S. 56:495(A) at 28 degrees 59 minutes 30.00 seconds north latitude, -90 degrees 51 minutes 57.00 seconds west longitude. The western boundary line originates at the Atchafalaya River Ship Channel at Eugene Island as delineated by the red buoy line at 29 degrees 22 minutes 14.93 seconds north latitude, -91 degrees 22 minutes 58.92 degrees west longitude and ends at a point on the three-mile line as described in R.S. 56:495(A) at 29 degrees 18 minutes 33.89 seconds north latitude, -91 degrees 26 minutes 16.05 seconds west longitude. The following state outside waters will remain closed to shrimping until further notice: The portion of state outside waters west of Atchafalaya River Ship Channel at Eugene Island to the western shoreline of Freshwater Bayou Canal. Recent biological sampling conducted by the department has indicated that small white shrimp, which have over-wintered in these waters from January through the present time, have reached marketable sizes, and the closure is no longer necessary. Significant numbers of smaller size white shrimp still remain in state outside waters west of the Atchafalaya River Ship Channel to the western shore of Freshwater Bayou Canal, and these waters will remain closed to shrimping until further notice. Notice of any opening, delaying or closing of a season by the Secretary will be made by public notice at least 72 hours prior to such action. CORONAVIRUS LIES, DAMNED LIES AND STATISTICS By: Jeff Crouere “There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies and statistics.” Origin unknown, popularized by Mark Twain As the world begins a second month of lockdown in response to the nightmare known as the coronavirus, it is essential to examine how this mess developed and how we return to some semblance of normalcy. As part of the quest for truth, the three types of lies must be identified: lies, damned lies and statistics. It is a lie that COVID-19 assuredly originated at some wet market in Wuhan, China. The media and most of the scientific and medical communities are holding to that theory; however, we do not know definitively. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) officials were not allowed into China to investigate the virus in the early stages. The communist Chinese government is notorious for lying and mistreating both its citizens and outsiders, so their statements verifying the wet market origins of the virus cannot be trusted. Obviously, the communist Chinese had an interest in creating world havoc. At the time the virus began to spread, there were pollution protests in Wuhan and anti-government protests in Hong Kong. Not coincidentally, both of those protests have ended with the coronavirus lockdown. Under pressure from United States President Donald Trump, China was forced to accept tariffs on their goods and a new trade deal that was fair, but not unduly favorable to their country. Trump was the first U.S. President in decades to stand up to the Chinese communists and advocate for the American taxpayer. Sadly, with the pandemic, the United States economy has been severely impacted. This result may very well please the communist Chinese government. During the last four weeks, only essential businesses have been able to operate. With a massive increase of 16.6 million unemployed workers, a gargantuan explosion of the national debt and a historic drop in the stock market, the once solid economy is very shaky. Some analysts believe either a recession or a depression will be arriving in our country. With a weakened economy, President Trump may very well lose his re-election bid in November. The beneficiaries will not just be the Democratic presidential candidate, former Vice President Joe Biden, the Trump hating media and the Deep State.

Springtime is an incredible time in the garden. Those beautiful springblooming flowers waited months to get a chance to bloom and now everything is exploding with color. With so much going on in the garden this time of year, it can be frustrating to know where to start. One of the best ways to organize your gardening projects is to create a to do list that you can refer back to. It will help you to stay on track and maximize the time spent in the garden. Here is a list of common garden chores tasks for this time of year. Feel free to pick and choose what is relevant to your garden landscape.
•
Continue pruning spring flowering shrubs as they finish blooming. This includes plants like azaleas, camellias, indian hawthorn, loropetalum, and viburnum. These plants set their flower buds for next year in summertime. Pruning too late in the season will interfere with their bloom cycle.
•
Check evergreen plants for signs of insect pests. These plants can be prone to scale insects. It is best to scout these problems early in order to keep them under control. You can use a horticultural oil spray to control them this time of year. Make sure to get good coverage because scale insects tend to feed on the undersides of leaves. Horticultural oil sprays need direct contact with the insect to be effective.
•
Take advantage of the springtime weather to continue replacing and adding new shrubs into the landscape. Later in the summer, when temperatures start to rise, heat stress will set in and make it difficult for the new plants to survive. Be sure to thoroughly water them in after you are finished.

Fertilize new planting plantings and existing perennials if you haven’t done so yet. Fertilizer will provide much needed nutrients to help plants grow. Quick release fertilizers will release their contents quickly whereas slow release type fertilizers release nutrients over time. Use this as a guide to determine how often to apply.
•
Continue planting warm season bedding plants to provide an abundant flow of color throughout the growing season. Choose plants like angelonia, lantana, marigolds, sunflowers, sunpatiens, vinca, and zinnias for full sun beds. You can choose from begonias, caladiums, and torenias for shadier spots.
•
Add a fresh layer of organic mulch to your landscape beds to help prepare them for summertime weather. Mulch will help prevent weed growth, keep soil temperatures cool in the summer, help retain soil moisture during times of drought, and they also provide a nice finished look to the garden. There are many kinds of mulches to choose from including shredded pine bark, shredded hardwood, and cedar. One of the most common mulches in southeast Louisiana is pine straw. Color one with a color and texture that you prefer.
•
Don’t forget about the lawn. As mowing season progresses, try to mow often enough that you remove about one third of the plant each time. It is also important to mow your lawn at the correct height. St. Augustinegrass should be cut between two and three inches tall, centipedegrass between one and two inches, zoysiagrass between one and two inches, and bermudagrass at one inch.

Lawns can be fertilized now if they haven’t been since the start of the spring growth period. Use lawn fertilizer at a rate of 1lbs Nitrogen per 1000ft2. For example, Scotts Turf Builder (32-0-4) contains 32% nitrogen. You should apply 3.1lbs of Scotts Turf Builder for every 1000ft2 of lawn grass. Take a soil sample to determine what elements are deficient in your soil. In some instances a different fertilizer product may be recommended based on what the soil analysis notates.

Hope you are all staying well and not going to stir crazy staying at home. For all you essential workers, thank you for all you are doing. You are all very important to us and truly appreciated. I know I have been counting on mail deliver, food delivery (at times), and so many others that essential personnel. I have been having to wait on supplies to get here and sometimes it takes longer than expected. So while waiting, I decided to work on my Patriotic Gnomes. As you can tell I still a little bit of work left to do on them. But it shouldn’t take me too much longer. I do plan on finishing them up tonight. This is a Jeannetta Cimo design. She has the cutest Gnome patterns, so you will probably be seeing more of these from me. Jeannetta also uses Deco Americana paints for her designs. Wouldn’t he look too cute hanging on the front door by himself, or inside a wreath. Or what about adding a stake to the back and placing him your flower garden? Capt. Hoop/ Our Freedom / Life is Good! This year I turned 78 on Monday the 23rd. To celebrate I did 3 different fishing trips. The first was inshore with Cheri, Eddie’s girlfriend, and Nicole Spenc, of Nicole’s bed & breakfast & Salt Life. We went out for a short redfish trip. It was another windy day but we had some good action once we found some clean water. We had to pick through a lot of shortfish and many different ones. It was just a very good fun trip, alot of laughs, also some good food on the table. A great day #1.
Day 2 - I went near shore targeting lane snapper. We did not find any at first so I stuck my nose out to deeper water looking for vermillion snapper. It was a bouncy ride and the rewards were not in our favor. It did not take me long to decide to come back in and settle in for a mixed bag of fish. I landed my personal best 22 inch lane on this trip.
This is what it li ooked like when the fish held under the boat circling ans not coming up. This particular fish weighed 183 pounds. Our targeted fish was in the boat. It took both Tony and Mathew to get this stud to the surface. Targeted fish on board. Mission accomplished! We had some time for another drift so we set up again. It looked like the army had arrived. Almost every boat around hooked up within an hour. We were no exception. I hooked up on another stud. This guy was headed towards the Bahamas. I was afraid it was going to spool the 50 wide I had in my hands. Eddie reassured me there was enough line left on the reel. Wow it sure looked skinny. As i was doing this Mathew has one take his bait and his reel is screaming. We now have a double. At this point I handed the rod to Tony. He and Mathew kept dancing over and under each other as the fish kept crossing and swimming in circles. Things were serious as thisdouble kept us on our toes. We were finally able to get a gaff in one which made the day much easier so we though. The rod breaks at the second guide from the reel. We now have a solid rod with no flexibility and sharp fiberglass just in front of the last guide on the rod. We had to just about hand line this guy into harpoon range. The first shot missed but the secind try hit home. The battle was ours. Our box was so full we had totwist and shift the fish just to close the door. Once we shoveled our ice from the other holding box we headed back to the barn.
Once I found them we had to deal with red snapper that all went back, big white trout that were invited to dinner, and even big look downs that the bidder ones decided to stay on the boat for dinner also. The lookdowns are an excellent fish to eat. If you get some bigger ones give them a try. You will thank me. At the end of the day we had a meet haul of over a hundred pounds of great eating. Tony Nelson always comes in for my birthday and we usually have good luck. Although my birthday was not until the next day I already had 2 outstanding days of great fishing with great friends. Day 3 - Today I am officially 78 years old and we are going offshore with Captain Eddie Burger of Fish Venice Charters .com. we left in some fog and had Mike follow us down the river. We were targeting tuna but trolled around a few rigs before getting to the tuna grounds. It paid off. We had one strike and landed a beautiful wahoo. This is my favorite fish to eat. We got to the tuna grounds and set up shop. We trolled for kings and bonita for bait. It did not take long. Once we got our bait we set up 4 lines and started chunking. The first 2 drifts got us sharks and kings. On the third drift a reel starts singing. We had what we were looking for. The fight was on. The fight was on.
This is the stud at 191 pounds. The rod destroyer. Talk about a fantastic 3 day long 78th birthday celebration. This prooves what i always say..... Life is Good!

Also, his administration unveiled aggressive guidelines that have mitigated the spread of the disease. While the President acted, Democrats in Congress were more interested in impeaching and convicting Donald Trump on ridiculous charges that did not generate any Republican support, except for U.S. Senator Mitt Romney of Utah. There was not a congressional hearing on the coronavirus until February. It is absurd that Democrats would claim the President did not act early enough when he was involved in this issue weeks before they did anything. The statistical lies are easily apparent to identify as this crisis has continued. The first models predicted over 2 million deaths in the United States. Not surprisingly, this estimate created hysteria in the country. Fortunately, it was wildly inaccurate. In recent weeks, the estimates have been revised downward. The latest figure indicates the country will suffer approximately 60,000 deaths. If this total is realized, as horrible as it may seem, it will be much lower than the death toll from the flu pandemics of 1918, 1957 or 1968. Even the new mortality estimate is questionable for many deaths are being wrongly attributed to the coronavirus. If a person has the coronavirus, but dies from a heart attack or cancer, their death will be counted. At a recent news conference, Dr. Deborah Birx, the Coronavirus Response Coordinator, crowed about the “very liberal approach to mortality.” Thus, the coronavirus death numbers will increase, and it may be done to generate more hysteria or more federal funding, or to continue the lockdown for a longer period. In an April guideline, the CDC admitted that the coronavirus mortality numbers are being bolstered. If a “definitive diagnosis of COVID-19 cannot be made, but it is suspected or likely, it is acceptable to report COVID-19 on a death certificate as ‘probable’ or ‘presumed.’” In the past few weeks, initial reports for deaths due to non-coronavirus causes show a dramatic decrease. It may be due to inaccurate accounting of these deaths as COVID-19. As we know, statistics can be manipulated to fit a certain agenda. In this case, the agenda seems very clear. -0-
