Growing up, The Lone Ranger and Tonto were two of my favorite television characters. Clayton Moore and Jay Silverheels held the roles for eight years, inspiring so many sayings and jokes (Hi Yo, Silver!, What you mean US, white man?) and the ingraining of the William Tell Overture into our minds perhaps like no other song or jingle in our lifetime.

The most famous line, the hook for the ending of the show, the one line repeated more times by more people in the past 65 years is “Who was that masked man?” Of course, it was The Lone Ranger, whose fight for Truth, Justice and the American Way were positives in a much simpler, yet more honest time. Today, we’re all Masked Men (or women, or whichever gender/species we want to identify with). My wife took to her sewing machine this past weekend and created masks for family and friends to wear. Ironically, the first place I wore mine was to the bank drive-up, where I was tempted to pass a note demanding $10,000 in small, unmarked bills, but I didn’t, of course. It is ironic that this time last year, walking into a bank dressed facially like we’re being asked to do would have had us shot; today, they’d rather hear that you’re there with a mask on to rob the place. After all, virtually everyone survives a bank robbery; more are at risk when you might bring the Corona Virus to visit. We’re still able to cross state lines and deliver our publications to several hundred stores in two states. The readership for all three of our editions is amazingly strong, creating the impression that our publications still have value to the public. Our distribution points are grocery stores and convenience stores for the vast majority of pickup. The others have shut down or remain open under restricted hours, but no one has turned down our publications where the doors are open. How long this will continue is an unknown. We continue to receive calls for ads to be placed in our papers. Our competition in Mississippi is virtually gone with the disintegration and retreat of the once mighty Sun Herald on the Coast and the reduction of circulation of other products in that area. Louisiana holds its own but there is more competition here, thanks to the foresight of John Georges who has kept the Times Picayune and the Advocate as viable print products plus a small handful of independent publishers who keep their weeklies and monthlies going as best they can.

We won’t overload you with more warnings, cautions or advisories on this pandemic. The information comes too frequently and too varied for print to keep up with the changing landscape; we do best by summarizing the results of a period of time. The summary shows that slowing of new cases in countries where the virus first appeared holds promise that the peaking of mortality and hospitalization in the United States may show the same trends as we move into the midspring. Meanwhile, millions suffer economic hardships and social isolation while this global drama plays out. Others have found peace in simple things, re-introduced into our lives with this forced separation and restriction. One weird observation I’ve had is that every single speaker at a fast LIKE NEW Aluminum extension ladders: 16’-$75, food restaurant seems to be working perfectly, the counter help is friendlier and more alert and the 20’-$100, 28’-$150, 32’ orders don’t seem be mixed up like in the pre-Corona days. $200. Any valid information regarding LDWF actions is on our website at www.wlf.la.gov or our Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/ldwffb/. Please verify the accuracy of any information at these sites before sharing it on social media. “It is incredibly unfortunate that some individuals would go out of their way to spread false information with the intent of creating confusion for the wonderful people of Louisiana,” said LDWF Secretary Jack Montoucet. “At a time when we are pulling together to deal with a deadly health crisis, there are some who find such actions amusing.” LDWF supports the recent comments by Gov. John Bel Edwards encouraging people “to go outside and to stay active during this time, as long as they practice social distancing when they are around their neighbors.” It is essential to remember that people should not gather in groups of more than 10, that you practice social distancing – stay at least six feet apart - and that you strictly follow the state and local orders related to the pandemic. We hope your families are well during these challenging days and have the opportunity to spend time outdoors together – whether relaxing in your backyard, biking in your neighborhood, hiking a nature trail, taking advantage of our upcoming turkey season, or going fishing near your home. As always, you’ll need a valid fishing or hunting license and must follow all fish and game regulations for the state of Louisiana.

ON MAY DAY THE COMEBACK MUST BEGIN By: Jeff Crouere The world is forever changed with the advent of this pandemic. The casualties may include traditional forms of greetings such as handshakes and hugging as more people embrace the new standard of “social distancing.” Possibly, large public events will become rare occurrences. Fewer people will shop at retail locations or attend movie theaters, as the rush toward online shopping and entertainment will be accelerated. Popular modes of travel such as cruise ships may find fewer customers in the future as the many coronavirus worries may disturb American life for many years to come. Already, massive changes have impacted our economy, inflicting financial damage to almost all Americans and businesses of every size. At the end of February, the United States had the best economy in the world, adding 273,000 jobs with rising wages and an extremely low unemployment rate of only 3.5%. The Trump economy was booming, the stock market was hitting record highs and the American public was confident about the future of the economy. My, how times have changed. Since that idyllic period, worries about the coronavirus have exploded and the nation’s economy has been essentially shut down, except for certain critical areas. All indicators have moved to negative territory. For example, the stock market is down about 30% from its February all-time high. On Friday, the March jobs report was released, and it was brutal. Amazingly, it is only a small taste of what will be coming in the months ahead. The U.S. Department of Labor reported that the unemployment rate increased to 4.4% and 701,000 jobs were lost. This was the first report in 113 months to show a loss of jobs in the country. Not surprisingly, the leisure and hospitality industries were hit the hardest with a loss of 459,000 jobs. Almost all job sectors, including manufacturing and retail, were negatively impacted by the nation’s response to the spread of the coronavirus. Unfortunately, the worst is yet to come as some analysts expect an economic decline of 34% annually in the second quarter. There could be a loss of 20 million jobs by the end of April, with the unemployment rate soaring to 15%. This would erase all the job gains over the previous decade.

Words to GREAUX by WARM-SEASON COLOR Now that we can definitely say that spring is here to stay, the selection amongst warm-season color options still seems extensive. Many gardeners see spring as the time to start growing fruits, plants, and vegetables. All of which is encouraged, just don’t forget about the rest of the landscape. Once the fear of frost leaves the area, warm season flowers will dominate in the landscape, especially in areas where bedding plants are used to add vibrant color.

LDWF ALERT: Be Aware Of Fake Hunting and Fishing Announcements Recently, LDWF has had to respond to several fake news articles, one regarding increased fishing fines and, most recently, the supposed forced closure of hunting and fishing season because of the COVID-19 pandemic. None of it is true.

PLAQUEMINES & WESTBANK PLUS!

To begin the big warm-season switch, start by cleaning up older plantings. Remove old plant material by pulling up dead plants and moving them to the compost pile. Any plant material showing disease should be separated and delivered straight to the trash can. Make a good effort to collect all remaining plant material to prevent the spread of disease. Weeds should be removed from the flower bed because they will compete with our landscape plants for light, nutrients, and space. Once the area has been prepped, it is now ready to add plants. Many gardeners get stuck on which flowers to choose for their spring gardens and with all of the different choices available, who can blame them? Look to add flowers that perform best in the warm season. Some of the more common choices you may find will include Ageratum (Ageratum houstonianum), joseph’s coat (Amaranthus tricolor), begonia (Begonia semperflorens cultorum), blue daze (Evolvulus glomeratus), cockscomb (Celosia cristata), spider flower (Cleome hasslerana), globe amaranth (Gomphrena globose), marigold (Tagetes spp.), Pentas (Pentas lanceolata), periwinkle (Catharanthus rosea), puslane (Portulaca oleracea), wishbone flower (Torenia foumieri), and zinnia (Zinnia elegans). The LSU AgCenter Super Plant program is an advertisement program put forth to promote Louisiana plants that perform well in our environment. The program highlights exceptional plants that perform well under typical Louisiana environmental conditions. One of the highlights from 2020 is the FlameThrower™ series of coleus, Plectranthus scutellarioides. The FlameThrower™ coleus series sets itself apart from the rest of the pack with its compact size. On average plants reached heights between 12-16in and 16-18in in width. Interesting texture is another quality of this new line of coleus plants. The leaves offer a unique shape with a ruffled edge. These two characteristics make the plant a great choice for use in mixed containers. The striking colors offered in this series provide a mixed planter with both a “thriller” and a “filler” plant at the same time. Horticulturists commonly refer to this combination as a high impact plant. Look to use Flamethrower™ coleus plants in your gardening activities this year!

Hope you are all doing well, staying inside (if you are not an essential worker), and trying to make the best of this situation. I have been working from home, trying to stay busy with things I would normally do at the office. Only difference is I don’t have my office buddy to drink coffee with. Hopefully, things will get better soon. It probably won’t be NORMAL again for quite a while. But, in the meantime all we can do is Pray for this virus to run it’s course and be over with. So please, if you are Not an essential worker, stay home. I am sure there is something you do besides cleaning the garage or attic. Oh wait, I know! Let’s do some crafting. Can hardly believe that Easter is this Sunday. I decided I would paint a cute little bunny to hang. This one was so much fun to paint. But, it did take awhile, because my grandson’s cat wanted to be in my lap the whole time I was trying to get this done. This is a Renee Mullins design. Yes my favorite designer for quick and easy. And the colors are so festive. I really like the soft green background. How about a cute little bunny for your little one to color. I think he is too adorable! I will be painting him on canvas, so I don’t access right now to my scroll saw. Well, that’s it for this time. I hope you all are well and stay that way, for those who are ill, I pray for your speedy recovery. So what will your next project be? Mine.......I don’t know. But, I know it will be fun. HAPPY EASTER!!! Sincerely, Paula Johnson

CAPT HOOP -- OUR FREEDOM Our Freedom Charters • 504-247-8459

Capt. Hoop/ Our Freedom / Life is Good! With the situation we are in I have shut down my charter business. That being said I hope we can get this situation under control. I normally fish with a neighbor when we go scouting or just for fun. He and i have decided to go it alone until it is safe. We had a good day so I decided to go to the East side of the river near my home. This is an area I have not been to in about a year. I waited for the fog to ease up before I went. The river kind of cleared to where it was safe to run without radar. Once in the designated area I found dirty water but decided to hit a few points. I found a bunch of 15 inch redfish. The fog never left but slowly crept back into the area. I just eased along hitting a few places. It was soon I realised we were dealing with what I call sea fog. About the third place I was playing with some rat reds. Suddenly there was a big splash and the drag starts singing. I knew at once I had a good redfish on. This guy did not like my looks and had no intentions of getting anywhere near the boat. It is things like this that keeps me doing what I do. Being alone I had fun getting the net while trying to control this beauty. As I was trying to net it he had other ideas. I had to put te net down to show the fish who was boss. It never gets old!

I won the battle. I put this pucture up to show an important safety tip. When I am alone i always wear my inflatable life vest or PFD as the Coast Guard calls it. If something happens you have a better chance. Always change your cylinder every 2 years. I have had a time when mine was spent when I went to change it. Still have a manual way to inflate it if I am conscious. I moved to an area that had a nice flow of water going through. There was a steady bite going on. I picked thru a lot of just unders but limited out on reds right there. I also released a few other keepers. With the fog getting thicker a friend was not far away. All he had was his GPS and the thick fog got him disoriented. We comunicated by phone and I located him with my radar. He followed me into a narrow drain and ran it to a pipeline tat took us to the river and back to the marina. Once in the narrow drain there was no fog but the fog was very thick to the edge of the marsh. It was too dangerous to think about taking a picture.

He was so thankful he cleaned my redfish limit for me. The 2 biggest were done on the half shell and the 3 smaller were filleted. I have plenty of fish so I gave them to a single mom so she could feed her children a few meals. Life is Good!

Plaquemines Parish Sheriff’s Office PPSO Arrests Two Women in Connection to a Drug-Related Shooting in Empire Sheriff Gerald A. Turlich, Jr. announces the arrests of Shembreca Blalock, 31, of Crowley, Louisiana and Takasha Blalock, 29, of Lake Charles, Louisiana on the charges of Attempted First Degree Murder and Simple Burglary Home Invasion in connection to a shooting that occurred on March 18, 2020 in Empire. Takasha Blalock was also charged with Possession of a Schedule I Controlled Dangerous Substance. The Plaquemines Parish Sheriff’s Office (PPSO) District 2 Patrol Division responded to a report of a shooting in the 33400 block of Highway 11 in Empire. Upon arrival, deputies discovered a male victim inside the residence who sustained multiple gunshot injuries to the torso area. During the course of the initial investigation, deputies were able to develop Shembreca Blalock and Takasha Blalock as the suspects involved in the incident and relayed the necessary information to assisting deputies in the area. Due to the quick actions of deputies on the scene, District 1 Patrol deputies were able to conduct a traffic stop and make contact with Shembreca Blalock and Takasha Blalock, who were arrested in connection to the shooting. Takasha Blalock was found to be in possession of an undisclosed amount of marijuana at the time of arrest. The male victim was transported to University Medical Center for medical treatment, where he’s currently in stable condition. “We can not tolerate these types of crimes in Plaquemines Parish. We will continue to work hard to find these offenders that show no regard for our community and bring them to justice,” said Sheriff Turlich. “Let’s come together in order to protect our family and neighbors. I would like to thank our community, patrol divisions and the investigations bureau for their quick and decisive response which resulted in an immediate arrest of the suspects in this case.” Shembreca Blalock and Takasha Blalock are currently confined at the Plaquemines Parish Detention Center with a $500,000 bond each.

Cont’d from “Jeff Crouere” on pp. 3 According to economists at the Federal Reserve’s St. Louis district, the unemployment rate will eventually reach over 30%, eclipsing the record 24.9% unemployment rate in 1933, during the Great Depression. Surely, the coronavirus is deadly. Some estimates show that between 100,000 and 240,000 Americans will die as a result of the disease. However, our nation has faced similar pandemics in the past and the response has been far less draconian. In 1957, the “Asian” flu swept across the world killing 1.1 million people, including 116,000 Americans. In 1968, the “Hong Kong” flu killed 1 million people worldwide, including approximately 100,000 Americans. In 2009-2010, the “Swine” flu infected over 60 million Americans and approximately 12,500 were killed. During none of these previous pandemics did the nation shut down the economy or take drastic steps of social distancing. The sport leagues were not cancelled, businesses remained open and Americans continued with their daily routines. Sadly, thousands of people died during these pandemics, but the country allowed businesses to continue operations. Thus, the country did not suffer from related social costs that will be associated with our response to the coronavirus. Certainly, national guidelines and “stay at home” orders will lessen the number of coronavirus victims, but evidence will likely show an increase in domestic violence cases and suicides. As Americans lose their jobs and see their savings shrink, the strain on mental health will be severe. Those already suffering from mental illness will be heavily impacted and there will be more people in acute need of medication to cope with the disaster. It does not help to have the mainstream news outlets and social media spending each hour of the day promoting fears about the coronavirus. It seems the focus of the reporting is to literally scare the living daylights out of Americans by constantly harping on the number of infected and dead people. This type of fearmongering increases ratings and serves to focus on negative statistics that can be used against their number one enemy, President Donald Trump. While the President tries to emphasize positive news, the media keep their focus on the depressing stories because they know Trump is vulnerable with a stalled economy. If the President’s poll numbers decrease, the media accomplish one of their cherished goals. Because of the damage it inflicts, it would be wise for Americans to avoid becoming saturated in the “doom and gloom” coronavirus news. Instead, they should spend plenty of time each day exercising, communicating with friends and family and trying to focus on worthwhile endeavors such as learning a new skill. While individual Americans need to avoid feelings of depression, our country must avoid falling into another Great Depression. If the national guidelines continue past the end of April, the impact will be incredibly severe and may be irreparable. The President should declare that on May Day, at least parts of the nation will be reopened for business. This may not be what the health experts recommend, but it is what the economy demands to insure the future viability of our nation.
