Port Sulphur Man Cited for Oyster Violations 8TH GRADE STUDENTS PARTICIPATING IN A CIVIL WAR PARTNER DEBATE
A Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) enforcement agent cited a Port Sulphur man for alleged oyster violations on Feb. 28. The agent cited Randy Johnson, 61, for misbranded seafood, selling fish without a wholesale/ retail dealer license and failing to complete trip tickets. A joint investigation between LDWF, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Enforcement and the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources resulted in the citations. LDWF agents found that Johnson was harvesting oysters in Louisiana following green tag protocols, which stipulates oysters must be consumed fully cooked. He then labeled the oysters with tags from several oyster processors in Port Sulphur even though the oysters never passed through those processors. Johnson then sold the oysters to a Mississippi man who sold them raw to consumers in Mississippi. Agents also discovered Johnson did not have the necessary wholesale/retail dealer license and never completed trip tickets for any of the sales. Misbranding seafood brings up to a $1,000 fine and a year in jail. Selling fish without a wholesale/retail dealer license and failing to complete trip tickets each carries a $250 to $500 fine and 90 days in jail for each offense.

Louisiana Department of Wildlife & Fisheries LDWF Announces Turkey Season Closure in Richard K. Yancey and Grassy Lake Wildlife Management Areas March 25, 2019 – Flooding has forced the closure of the upcoming turkey hunting season in Richard K. Yancey and Grassy Lake Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs), the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries announced. LDWF Secretary Jack Montoucet signed a Declaration of Emergency on Monday (March 25) implementing the closure. Youth turkey lottery hunts scheduled for this weekend (March 30-31) at the two WMAs have been cancelled because the closure. Turkey season statewide opens April 6. The closure will remain in effect on the WMAs until floodwater subsides.

Well, I have started on my Cat that I said I would share with you. Unfortunately it isn’t completed yet, as I have been under the weather and haven’t been able to do much. I would like to Congratulate All of Mari Milnar’s Dance Academy’s Competition Dance Teams for bringing home all those wins!!! They competed this past weekend at Beyond the Stars 2019 Regions. Mentioning all the awards they brought home would take up the whole column! We have a 3 competition teams and one of them was chosen to compete for the honor of possibly going to Hollywood to compete!!! Keeping my fingers crossed. So very proud of them! The spring vegetable season is one of the most popular times in the garden. Everyone has a memory to share regarding their first experiences with spring vegetable plants. Some of us tell stories of mothers growing food to feed a large family, and for many of us, we tell stories about grandma and her ability to grow absolutely anything. Finish harvesting the remainder late winter vegetable garden. This would include cabbages, collards, lettuces, mustards, spinach, and turnips. Discard any remaining plant tissue into the compost pile. Be Will Afton sure to separate diseased tissue and throw it away in the trash in order to prevent potential spread throughout the garden. Some gardeners try to time this step with a good rain shower. The most important decisions to be made at this time are deciding on what plants to grow. Start by looking at warm season vegetable crops. Next, start looking at weekly meals and common snacks in your household to help decide on what plants to grow. In Louisiana, we can grow a variety of vegetable crops. Growing something that works well in your particular situation has a big influence on the overall gardening experience. Choose crops that can be used in a couple of weekly meals or snacks. Although not a complete list, below are some of the more popular spring vegetable plants grown in Louisiana. Follow the plant spacing advice and try to use recommended varieties when available. To obtain a copy of the Louisiana Vegetable Planting Guide, check with your local parish extension office. • • • • • • • • • •
Beans (bush) - Space bean plants three to four inches apart. Some recommended varieties include ‘Blue Lake’, ‘Derby’, and ‘Magnum’. Beans (pole) - Space pole beans every twelve inches apart. Recommended varieties include ‘Kentucky Blue’, ‘Kentucky Wonder’, and ‘McCaslan’. Bell peppers – Space plants eighteen inches apart. Recommended varieties include ‘California Wonder’, ‘Jupiter’, and ‘Keystone Resistant Giant’. Cantaloupes. Provide eighteen to twenty-four inches between plants. Recommended varieties include ‘Ambrosia’, ‘Dixie Jumbo’, and ‘Magnum 45’. Cucumbers – Space plants twelve to eighteen inches apart. Recommended varieties include ‘Dasher II’, ‘Straight 8’, and ‘Poinsett 76’. Eggplant – Space plants eighteen to twenty-four inches apart. Recommended varieties include ‘Black Beauty’, ‘Classic’, and ‘Ichiban’. Okra – Space plants twelve to eighteen inches apart. Recommended varieties include ‘Clemson Spineless’, ‘Annie Oakley’, and ‘Cajun Delight’. Tomatoes – Space plants eighteen to twenty-four inches apart. Recommended varieties include ‘Better Boy’, ‘Celebrity’, and ‘Mountain Spring’. Common cherry tomato cultivars include ‘Sweet 100’ and ‘Sun Gold’. Squash – Space plants thirty-six inches apart. Recommended varieties include ‘Multipik’, ‘Medallion’, ‘Early Summer Crookneck’, and ‘Early Prolific Straightneck’. Sweet corn – Space plants ten to twelve inches apart. Avoid planting in a single row and plant short rows in blocks for best production. Recommended varieties include ‘Funks G90’, ‘Silver Queen’, and ‘Seneca Horizon’.

Capt. Hoop/ Our Freedom / Life is Good! This is why I am still doing my chattering at 77 years old. To get a picture like this of a 7 year old that is already an accomplished hunter and guide him into the fishing scene. He wanted the spinning reel handle changed to the right side. I do that for many customers. I showed him why the handle is on the left side for right handed people. We had a slow day but after the second fish Buck told his dad he liked reeling the new way. It was easier and he had better control
Due to the cold winds and low water our fishing days were going to be challenging to say the least. There were enough fish around to keep us interested.
We also found a good sized sheepshead to add to our bag for the day We managed to get our limit and have a great time doing it.
We ended up with a limit of reds and one croaker. These guys went for tuna today and ended up with 4 yellowfin. Tomorrow they are going nearshore fishing with me again. If it is anything like today was my next artical will be too big for this paper. Life is Good!
On another trip I had a fire fighter from Houston who had never caught a redfish. He was to get his first with me.
