This provides a good base and allows plant roots and easy path to establishment. Make rows or planting hills to designate where plants will be placed. Review the soil sample analysis to apply a pre-plant fertilizer. If no report is available for review, use a general rate of 1.25lbs 8-8-8 fertilizer for every 10ft of planting row. Use a scale and plastic cup to weigh out correct amount of fertilizer and apply to see the row. Cover the fertilizer granules with soil and water them in well with water. Some gardeners try to time this step with a good rain shower. The most important decisions to be made at this time are deciding on what plants to grow. Start by looking at warm season vegetable crops. Next, start looking at weekly meals and common snacks in your household to help decide on what plants to grow. In Louisiana, we can grow a variety of vegetable crops. Growing something that works well in your particular situation has a big influence on the overall gardening experience. Choose crops that can be used in a couple of weekly meals or snacks.

DAILY BRIEFINGS YES, BUT REPORTERS NO By: Jeff Crouere Ever since the coronavirus became a household word and the American people started to worry about its tremendous impact, President Donald Trump and his task force have held daily media briefings. At these events, the President will usually make an announcement and then introduce members of his team who have important information to share with the American people. It is quite helpful to hear from these tireless public servants who are working day and night to save the lives of countless Americans. What is not helpful is the question and answer session from the media that follows the opening remarks. Inevitably, liberal reporters will play “gotcha” games with the President and his task force. The goal is to embarrass the President and his administration rather than to provide any useful facts to the American people. In recent days, reporters have been hyperventilating about the President’s use of the term “Chinese virus,” to describe this health threat. They are insistent that it is a racist term, forgetting that epidemics are often given a title that reflects where the disease originated. For example, the “Asian flu” pandemic of 1957-58 originated in China, the pandemic of 1968 was called the “Hong Kong” flu and the virus which began in 1937 in Uganda was called “West Nile” after the region from which it started. In this pandemic, reporters seem to be more interested in political correctness than in providing important life-saving information to the American people. What the President has stated repeatedly is that identifying the “Chinese” origins of the flu is not racist, but very important, because state media sources in the communist country have been trying to publicize the lie that the United States military planted the virus in China. Of course, the communist dictators are trying to evade responsibility for not only the origins of the virus, but also their incompetence in stopping the spread of the disease. From the beginning of this crisis, Chinese leaders have used draconian media censorship to prevent the world from knowing about the existence and dangers of the coronavirus. While some of the liberal reporters have been blasting the President for his choice of words in describing the coronavirus, others have been claiming that he is being too optimistic with the American people. On Friday, in his news conference, the President tangled with Peter Alexander of NBC News. He claimed that the President was trying to put a positive spin on the news that a drug used to treat Malaria, Chloroquine, may be useful in treating coronavirus.

Tony’s Take BE WOKE…OR BE BROKE! It was a grand week for watching the Walmartians doing their thing, stripping the shelves bare of toilet tissue, bottled water and hand sanitizer and cleaning products. As a seasoned veteran of more than a dozen “shopper’s panic” hurricane events, it never ceases to amaze me what people hold near and dear to themselves. It was more than Walmart shoppers, to be fair. All the grocery store chains and independents also went through the same semi-panic mode. You could shop leisurely for nearly any other product in the stores and be assured they were still there. Canned goods were not scarce but bread and rolls were beginning to become a short supply product. It didn’t matter where you were. People could have gotten rich selling spots in line at the cashier stations as some outlets had people 20 deep or more in line. Me, I grabbed a Corona (cerveza, por favor) with a lime, which I understand keeps the virus at bay. I threatened to switch to Dox Equis (stay safe, my friend!) but others informed me it wasn’t the Corona beer that had gone viral but the Corona flu strain that was a virus. Easy mistake to make. Just kidding. We are now an officially Woke Nation. Naw, not the artificial leftist term for being aware but actually awake to what this virus could do to gridlock America. We have to take this pandemic seriously but not run around like Chicken Little. Think of how many hospital beds Michael Bloomberg could have purchased instead of settling for one Democratic delegate per $160 million spent in January and February. Now our handshakes are passed’ for the springtime and no one will be able to walk into a bank (masks, you know), Talk about cultural appropriation! Our society could start looking like Japan, with hundreds of thousands of blue masks everywhere. Now the broke part. Don’t look at your investments. (Step away from the computer and put your hands where we can see them!) They will come back much faster than in the past because the event torpedoing them will also be controlled (not eliminated) much faster than similar scenarios in previous bear markets. If you are living off of them, the strategy is different and that’s between you and your investment consultant(s). But if they are passive, don’t create an unhealthy you over worry you really can’t control right now. Consult, evaluate but resist the urge to “do something” unless those somethings had merit this time last year. Meanwhile, we will see if America can survive without daily sports activities. We’ve already heard of the generosity of some like Zion Williamson of the Pelicans, who has donated part of his income to paying the entire Smoothie King Stadium staff for the next 30 days. No NBA? No Masters in April? Delayed Major League baseball? Oh, that’s been done before. March Madness suffering from Mad Virus Disease? At least we will have the NFL Draft in April and some events will take place. But our fix on sports is about to test the psyche of the American male to survive abstinence for even one day. Hot wing sales will plummet and overpriced professional jersey sales will also take a nosedive. Beer sales? Well, I’m sure Corona has suffered tremendously (have you seen any of their commercials on television lately?) and beer sales in general will take a hit because drinking with buddies is more profitable than drinking alone for consolation. So, rise up, America! Take that airline trip to somewhere you really couldn’t afford last year because not only can you afford it now, the TSA probably has more agents at the terminal than there are passengers. Want to avoid people for two weeks? Get yourself self-quarantined. Want to stay away from overcrowded public venues? No problem, amigo! Fed up with political primaries? Hey, they were over before the President’s announcements a couple of weeks ago. The Dems want Joe Biden out of sight anyway and Bernie will have trouble rallying his young woke troops, who are not serious Corona targets but whose politics will keep them more separate than they would normally be because of the virus. What a country! -0-

Cont’d from “Jeff Crouere” on pp. 3 In essence, Alexander claimed that the President was giving Americans false hope. He said, “What do you say to Americans who are watching you right now who are scared?” The President replied by telling Alexander, “you’re a terrible reporter…The American people are looking for answers and they’re looking for hope, and you’re doing sensationalism.” Hooray for the curt response that President Trump gave Alexander and many of the other reporters over the last few days. Alexander is typical of almost all the reporters at the daily press briefings. Most of them are liberals who work for liberal news agencies. They have an agenda, which is, first and foremost, to inflict political damage on President Trump. The left-wing media are so offended that the President has told the truth, many are now calling for a boycott of his briefings. A columnist for The Washington Post, Margaret Sullivan, tweeted that “The media must stop live-broadcasting Trump’s dangerous, destructive coronavirus briefings.” The media are also upset that the President is showing leadership that is being appreciated by the American people. The latest ABC News poll, which is similar to several other recent surveys, indicated that the President enjoyed a strong 55% approval rating from the American people for his handling of the coronavirus pandemic. Going forward, it would be a better idea for the President to hold these important briefings without the media. The sessions would be shorter, the task force could spend more time on important matters and the American people would not be subjected to unfair reporters trying to score political points on the President of the United States. Last year, new White House Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham disbanded the daily press briefings. It was a very wise move because too many of the reporters were being abusive toward the President and the White House Press Secretary. This inappropriate behavior was apparent from the very beginning of the Trump administration. This media behavior has been harmful to our country, but, in the crisis today, it is even more damaging. Allowing biased reporters to ask questions is certainly not serving any sort of purpose, other than to badger the President and the members of his task force. It is time to end the charade. -0-

By Paula Johnson

Hi, Everyone!

email me! PaulaJ3036@gmail.com

How are all of you doing with having to stay home? Are the children totally bored yet? Carlea’, my granddaughter, is having online classes, as I am sure many of the children are. She misses her friends and teachers. She especially misses art. Carlea’ is a student at AOL and really enjoys her art class. She came for a visit last weekend due to being bored and wanted to do some crafting. She didn’t want to paint on wood or glass, but she did want to paint. So we went on a search for watercolor and/or canvas paper. You would be surprised what is in the craft room when you dig in enough boxes that are still unpacked. We managed to find both, and she decided on the watercolor paper. While I was doing other things, she stood by the painting desk and painted away. I must admit I was pleasantly surprised, as she did this freehanded. I must say, with the proper teaching methods she is receiving, she is better than I am. I am not very good at freehanding on anything. I must give credit to her art teacher and thank her for being so dedicated to her students and teaching them to correct way to do things. There are so many crafty things to do with your children while they are home and everyone is staying in. The internet has a wealth of information, just google what you would like to do. Make a planter or pencil holder out of an empty vegetable can, how about painting a clown face on a paper plate. The ideas are countless. Anything to beat the boredom. Well, that’s it for this time. I pray that you and your family are all well and have not been touched by this virus. And if you have, I pray you recover quickly. So what will your next project be? MIne............I don’t know. But, I know it will be fun. -- Sincerely, Paula Johnson

Tony’s Take WILL THE VIRUS UNITE US? This Corona virus pandemic has begun to show a uniting of Americans of all opinions and persuasions. People are realizing that health care and medical personnel are a heck of a lot more important than which 25-year old superstar received a 9-figure payday. People like Rihanna have put their pocketbook where others have only put their mouths by donating $5 million to research this disease. People have generally been in good to great spirits as the restrictions continue to squeeze what was a powerful economy into the constraints of a possible recession. But recessions are a result of limited goods and capital and I can’t remember one triggered by a health concern. It is good to see politicians starting to act like human beings again and President Trump even getting a little slack from the paid, professional haters who have overstated their case so extremely that no one outside of their miserable cadre gives a damn. You can only beat a horse so long before the cooler heads prevail and what I see in Washington and other urban centers is a huge void in coolness, heads or otherwise. This paper will continue to circulate because news and media outlets are deemed essential. So we will gather, print and distribute as long as it is economically feasible to do so. Many families depend on our publications for some or all of their income, so it’s a welcome relief for them. My wife’s business, too, fortunately, is categorized essential because she is a mail, packaging, delivery and drop off center for the Post Office, UPS, FEDEX and DHL and is the most experienced in the Slidell area. We will continue to take and publish your ads and make sure our publications are out in their racks in a normal manner. If we continue to unite as a people, I feel confident this crisis will pass before summer and by this time next year its ramifications will be limited. What would be wonderful would be to see the spirit of America remain, the ability to subrogate ourselves to a greater good and become the United States as it was when I was born. More important, maybe it will teach ourselves to be less selfish, less shallow and less ignorant. We need to understand that two generations of do-gooders have weakened the resolve and self-sufficiency of our country. We need to crack down on things that need the discipline to be controlled and the wisdom to know the difference between oppression and opportunity. This virus will be history sooner than later. What residue it leaves will be solely up to us as a people, If we don’t learn any lessons from it, shame and possible future disaster may visit us and we still won’t have a clue why our greatest country on Earth is being victimized by FATE.

_______________________________________________________

Be thankful this pandemic isn’t what pandemics used to be. Yes, we are suffering financially and are chaffing with our lack of mobility. But read your history about the Black Plague or typhoid or any of the past pandemics and count your lucky stars that most of us will be able to see the light at the end of this tunnel. Retribution and reckoning are down the road; cooperation and understanding are the orders of the day. Stay heathly, my friend, ironically, a twist on Dos Equis’s slogan of “stay thirsty, my friend.” And raise a toast to the spirit of Americans.

PLAQUEMINES FISHING REPORTS

CAPT HOOP -- OUR FREEDOM

CALL US TODAY...SELL IT TOMORROW! We were getting mixed doubles. The box was looking very good with reds, drum, sheepshead, and the always wanted trout. Every time things slowed down and I thought about leaving another good fish would be introduced to my landing net.

Our Freedom Charters • 504-247-8459

Capt. Hoop/ Our Freedom / Life is Good! The next day the dense fog kept us at the dock for a while. Even with dual navigation systems and a very good radar it was best to sit and be safe. Once i got to my first place we hit gold.

As the day went on i even called the other boat in this group to come in and fish right next to me. I was in a small drain so all he could do is tie up alongside me. He fished the right bank and I fished the left bank. The guys went from boat to boat depending on what they wanted to catch. Reds, drum, and sheepshead were on my side while specks and drum were on his side.

Little did i know I would spent the entire day there. Although a slow bite the other 2 boats with me and others I was in contact with were not having the success I was having.

It is a very rare day when you can sit in one place and make a day of it. This was one of those special days.

Although not a full limit day we ended up with 130 pounds of good eating and very happy customers. Life is Good! Tony you and i can take any day that weekend. Bring your eat and drink of choice.
