Louisiana Department of Wildlife & Fisheries LDWF Announces Road Closure on Pearl River Wildlife Management Area March 7, 2019 - The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) has closed Old Highway 11 on the northern part of Pearl River Wildlife Management Area (WMA) due to flooding. Included in this closure is the Pearl River Honey Island Shooting Range, located within the WMA. All hunting, except waterfowl, is closed when the river stage at Pearl River reaches 16.5 feet. The closure is an automatic benchmark set by the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission. BCA afterschool clubs, ‘Oh The Things You’ll Grow’ gardening group and ‘Beta Club,’ joined efforts for harvesting and cleaning BCA garden produce. Their combined efforts provided fresh picked vegetables for the BCA cafeteria. Kaydence Rowe, Emily Thomas, Dianne Hernandez

Road closures are deemed necessary to ensure safety and prevent road damage. Once the water recedes, LDWF will inspect, repair and reopen those roads when it is determined they are safe for travel. The Pearl River WMA, which consists of 35,618 acres, is located approximately six miles east of Slidell and approximately one mile east of Pearl River.

Agents Cite Three Men for Illegal Gill Net Fishing in Two Separate Cases Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Enforcement Division agents cited three men for alleged gill net violations involving two separate cases in Plaquemines Parish. On Feb. 26, agents cited Timothy P. Cheramie Jr., 33, of Buras, and Danny L. Davis Jr., 35, of Venice, for actively fishing a gill net below the saltwater line. After a lengthy investigation, agents also cited Salvador Cepriano, 55, of Venice, for actively fishing a gill net below the saltwater line and fishing without a commercial fishing license on March 1.

Damien Montes

Agents were on patrol near Dry Cypress Bayou on the evening of Feb. 26 when they observed Cheramie Jr. and Davis Jr. tending a 900-foot gill net. Agents watched the subjects pull numerous red and black drum from the net. Agents seized the net and returned the fish to the water. Agents received a complaint about a man using a gill net in the Mississippi River in Plaquemines Parish. Agents observed Cepriano using a 900-foot gill net on March 1. Agents made contact with Cepriano and found him in possession of 1,017 pounds of catfish. Agents seized the net and sold the catfish to the highest bidder. Using a gill net in below the saltwater line brings a $900 to $950 fine and up to 120 days in jail. Commercially fishing without a commercial fishing license carries a $250 to $500 fine and up to 90 days in jail.

Gunnar Mottern

Agents Cite Three Men for Illegal Gill Net Fishing in Two Separate Cases March 11, 2019 – The Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission (LWFC) voted Thursday (March 7) to amend light geese and white-fronted geese hunting season in the proposed notice of intent for the 2019-20 hunting seasons, rules and regulations during its monthly meeting in Woodworth. The commission voted to decrease the number of available hunting days from 88 to 74 and increase the daily bag limit of white-fronted geese from two to three. The daily bag limit for light geese, which includes snow, blue and Ross geese, remains at 20. The first season split will begin Nov. 16, 2019, and run through Dec. 8, 2019, with the second season split set to begin Dec. 14, 2019, running through Feb. 2, 2020. These seasons will be in effect in both the north and south zones.

Grayson, Cameron Jenkins, Aaron Anderson

The Conservation Order for light geese will run from Dec. 9-13, 2019, for the first split then Feb. 3-March 15, 2020. There is no daily bag or possession limit during the Conservation Order. To view the full notice of intent and all proposed hunting season dates and regulations changes for the upcoming hunting seasons, please visit http://www.wlf.louisiana.gov/action-items . Hi, Everyone!

email me! PaulaJ3036@gmail.com

Have you been too busy for crafting due to Mardi Gras? A lot of my friends had decided to go to Disney World, the Rock Mountains, and places other than New Orleans for Mardi Gras. While others had decided to embrace the craziness of Mardi Gras by going opening their homes to family and friends from out of state. No matter what was decided, I am sure there was little crafting going on. Now we are settling down getting ready for spring. I decided I wanted to do something that would brighten up the living room and make my candle look better to. That called for a trip to the craft store. I bought myself an 8” grape vine wreath and some silk flowers. Not large flowers, just some cute, dainty accent flowers. I got 3 bunches of different colors and just glued them to the wreath and placed my candle in the center. Nothing could have been easier. And it looks nice to. Hope you like it. Well, that’s it for this time. So what will your next craft project be? Mine.....I don’t know but, I know it will be lots of fun. Sincerely, Paula Johnson

Refer to the checklist below for recommendations on things to do in the southern landscape during the month of March. Drainage is fast becoming one of the most common stresses in Louisiana lawns. Week long rain events and humid weather present a multitude of problems. Lower areas of the yard will drain slower than the high areas. Any turfgrass will be affected by water logged soils and will thin out over time. Weeds that can handle those types of conditions win out and begin to take over. Use a good quality top soil or river sand/silt product to raise lower areas in the yard. The addition of a French drain can also help with drainage issues, especially in lawns that are flat and have little contour to direct the flow of water.

Gardening To-Do List for March

GROSE, CLARENCE G VIOLET, LA Criminal Tresspass

DUFFOURC, LARRY J TERRYTOWN, LA Bench Warrant

SPRING GARDEN SEASON

With springtime approaching soon, gardeners will start venturing out into the garden to start pruning, planting, weeding, and fertilizing. Before we get down to the details about things that can be done in the spring garden, it is important to walk through the yard and make observations. This will be the first part of the planning process. Examine all the plants in your landscape. The azaleas should be approaching maximum bloom and starting to put out some new growth. Tea roses should be full of leaves. Will Afton Lawns should be turning green in patches. Crapemyrtles should be putting out new leaves. Examine everything, take notes, and review any notes from last year. Then you can prioritize different tasks and start your spring garden plan.

Lastly, you can attack the weeds themselves. Weeds are just plants that are growing out of place. They can be described as annual (living one year) or perennial (living year after year). This is important to know when selecting herbicides to control them. Herbicides can be described as selective (kills certain types of plants and not others) or non-selective (kills all plants). The most popular non-selective herbicide is glysophate and it can be found in products like Round Up and Hi-Yield Killzall. Selective herbicides are commonly used in lawn situations, especially types that can be applied over the top of lawn with no effect to the turfgrass. Ortho Weed B Gon and Fertilome Weed Free Zone are popular selective herbicides that can be used in lawns. They provide good control of most broadleaf weeds growing in the lawn. Products like Image Nutsedge Killer, Sedgehammer, and Hi-yield Nutsedge Killer provide good control of sedge-like weeds growing in the lawn. All of the products listed above are known a post-emergent herbicides because they are applied to a plant that is already growing. Pre-emergent herbicides are used to kill plants as soon as they germinate. Annual weeds that come back from a seed are best controlled using pre-emergent herbicides. Dimension (dithiopyr) is the most popular herbicide of this type used by homeowners. Apply it in February and again in September for best results. Remember to always read and follow label instructions before applying any type of pesticide.

Prune and dead head cool season bedding plants such as pansies, snapdragons, pentunias, and violas. These plants will still look good and bloom throughout the month of March. Wait until April to switch out them out with warm season bedding plant options. Fertilize spring flowering bulbs while leaves are still good and green. After flowering, the leaves produce sugars (photosynthesis) and stores it in the underground bulb for use in the next season when flowering. Proper care now will ensure success in following years. Divide and transplant perennial herbs and flowers. Divide flowering perennials like blackeyed Susan and purple coneflower when clumps start to take over their allotted space in a flowerbed. Both of these plants are resilient and can be divided with a shovel. Replant into new areas or plant it pots to give to family and friends. Get ready to plant spring vegetables as soon as cool weather is gone. Gardeners in more northern areas will wait slightly longer. Vegetable plants have a better chance at producing bigger yields when planted early in the season. Vegetables to consider include bell peppers, cucumbers, hot peppers, tomatoes, squash, and zucchini. To view a more detailed chart all vegetables grown in Louisiana, along with their planting dates, check out www.lsuagcenter. com and search for the Louisiana Vegetable Planting Guide. It also provides information on recommended varieties to use in your garden. Watch landscape trees as they start to produce leaves this month. A healthy tree will start leafing out throughout the canopy at about the same time. When sections or different branches within the canopy leaf out significantly later than others, you can tell that the tree is stressed. Several different environmental conditions can cause problem with our trees. Compacted soil in the root zone is one of the major issues. Other issues include poor surface drainage, physical root damage from digging near the tree, and originally being planted too low in the ground. Do not fertilize the lawn just yet. Allow the warm-season turfgrass to completely green up before any applications of fertilizer. Take a soil sample now to learn which fertilizer to use later next month. Control any weed issues now while you wait. Selective herbicides can be applied over the top of the lawn to control most broadleaf weed issues. Be on the lookout for large (brown) patch disease in the lawn, especially if wet weather is expected in the extended forecast. Large patch disease is very problematic during the spring and fall. Damage appears as circles of yellow grass that turn brown over a short period of time. Look to apply a fungicide to help prevent the spread of this disease. Look for lawn fungicides that contain propiconazole, myclobutanil, or azoxystrobin as the active ingredient. If a follow up treatment is needed then use a different active ingredient on the second round. Words 2 Greaux, Continued on pg. 7

Capt. Hoop/ Our Freedom / Life is Good! Fishing with Leam This kid has been wanting to go fishing for a while. The last time we went he only caught 4 very small black drum under very bad conditions. Today was going to be different as I had promised. He was the first to hook up. After a very good battle he was the victor. A nice 31 incher. What a way to start the day.

This mangrove was 13.5 inches. The color is about the boldest I have ever seen. I did not get a closer look but it may have a cubera snapper. You never know what you find in this area. This jack crevalle was a big change from what we were doing all day. It took a lot of our fishing time away. I had to move off our spot and chase it just to keep from being spooled.

We had a good day fishing but we were struggling to find some slot fish. This was my 5th place I had in mind to hit today. I was very disgusted at the first 3 places I looked at and went right around to the “hot spot”. We got some doubles and some keepers did show up. After about 2 hours of this and mom shivering in the cold fog and wind it was time to head in.

The box filled up quickly. We had our limit 11:30. We stopped at another place on the way in just to check it out. The whole place has been changed. All the canes are dead. The land Mark’s and cover the fish had are all gone. As you travel to your old fishing places you will see the vast damage the scale has done to our rozo canes. We did find a good sized reddish and released it. We ended the day with a limit of 20 lane snapper and a trigger fish, some croaker, mangrove, channel mullet, black drum, and redfish. The second day we went for redfish. The sea fog was about the thickest I have ever seen it where we fished the first. When we casted our lines out we could not see our bright orange corks. There were nothing but bulls here. After a dozen of these we decided to go find some slots. As I entered the bay I noticed 2 other boats. We quickly found our 10 redfish we needed. I called my buddy in. He had left earlier than I and been fishing further inside the bay all the time. He only had 9 fish and needed 20 for the day. As I was trolling out he was already adding to hid limit As I entered the bay I noticed 2 other boats. We quickly found our 10 redfish we needed. I called my buddy in. He had left earlier than I and been fishing further inside the bay all the time.

I am looking to the next time I can get him out there. He is ready for the next trip. This kid can FISH!

We were back in by 11:00. We had lunch and I decided to go check out some places for the future. I invited them to join for a catch and release hunt. According to the radio every one in the area was struggling. I tucked into a small shallow pond and found some clean water.it held good bait. For some reason the reds were not feeding hard. They kept pulling the hook some where into the fight. We hooked 6 big reds but only managed 1 to the boat. What a great 2 days these guys had weit me. I wish I could produce like that all the time. My phone would be ringing off the dock. Life es Good!

Two good trips.

I had Mike and Rich for 2 days. The first day we did a near shore trip. Our targeted fish was lane snapper and anything else that was legal.
