Individuals who believe they have encountered other orphaned or injured wildlife species, should likewise leave the animal alone and contact an LDWF biologist at the nearest LDWF Regional Office http://www.wlf.louisiana.gov/regional-offices or an LDWF licensed wildlife rehabilitator. A list of licensed wildlife rehabilitators can be found on LDWF’s website at http:// www.wlf.louisiana.gov//page/injured-orphaned-wildlife Individuals interested in the Wildlife Rehabilitation Program should contact Melissa Collins at mcollins@wlf.la.gov or 225-763-8584.

Louisiana Department of Wildlife & Fisheries Best Practice When Encountering Injured or Orphaned Wildlife is to Leave It Alone LDWF Advises March 9, 2020 - With spring on the doorstep, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) would like to remind the public that the best thing to do when encountering injured or orphaned wildlife is to leave it alone and undisturbed. Each year LDWF receives calls from concerned citizens who have found what they believe to be orphaned or abandoned mammals. It is against the law to capture, transport or possess mammalian wildlife and generally, those animals are better off left where they are found. During the upcoming spring and summer months, the public is more likely to encounter or observe young wildlife with and without their parents. The presence of juvenile wildlife is common during these seasons as young wildlife begins to explore their environment, learn to forage/hunt and defend themselves. LDWF is alerting the public to refrain from intervening in normal wildlife rearing and dispersal processes. It is not uncommon to find young wildlife alone while the parents are hunting/foraging or during a den relocation. Wildlife parents will return to the den site twice a day or more calling and waiting for a response from their young to then provide the necessary care of the young and/or move the young, one by one, to the new den site. The young will often be observed alone during the relocation and dispersal phases. Predators are less likely to find the young if the parents move the den location and doing so reduces the chances of entire den failure. Individuals who encounter what appears to be orphaned wildlife should leave them alone and immediately leave the area, allowing the parents to return and continue to care for their offspring. Individuals who encounter deer fawns must leave the area immediately. Do not touch or interact with the fawn. Fawns are virtually scentless and use this advantage to avoid predation. Does often leave their fawns alone for hours to forage and to reduce attracting predators to the fawn. You are most likely to see fawns in Louisiana from March-September. If you have encountered a fawn or deer which you believe to be orphaned or injured, note the location of the animal and leave the area immediately. Notify an LDWF biologist at the nearest LDWF Regional Office at https://www.wlf.louisiana.gov/page/contact-us or call the 24-hour LDWF Enforcement Dispatch at 1-800-442-2511. Remember: IF YOU CARE, LEAVE IT THERE!

SUPER TUESDAY MEANS A RESPITE FROM SOCIALISM Tuesday’s 14-state Democratic primaries offered a refreshing breath of air from a campaign that was beginning to worry me. This country is becoming younger and ignorant to what socialism means to our way of life. I expect my grandchildren will have to deal with socialists as our country becomes more base, less sophisticated and more self-centered. But for now, I don’t think we’ll have to be concerned with a man who would attempt to drastically change the spirit of this country. Bernie Sanders has a young following as did John F. Kennedy and Barack Obama. But Sanders is not even a shadow of these two disparate former Presidents. Sanders has no idea how to fund any of the programs he wants to foist on America. He’s Joe Biden, mentally, but at least Joe Biden only wants to screw up certain parts of the U.S. Biden somehow overcame his gaffes and oncoming Alzheimer’s to win ten of 14 states on Tuesday, including Texas and Massachusetts, losing only California, Colorado, Utah and Vermont. Comparing Biden and Sanders today is similar to comparing Trump and Clinton in 2016 except Clinton had the backing of the established Democratic hierarchy. Sanders is a figure to be feared because if he does get into office, he will have no idea what the hell he is doing and he will really put this nation at peril. You think Trump has his detractors? Wow! Wait until you see the 78-year old scarecrow impersonator in action if he gets in. Columnist Paul Gerson, a fairly liberal writer, had a thoughtful piece last week, comparing Trump and Sander’s personas. There is a great deal of truth in the piece, but with Sanders, you’re getting a curmudgeon who will never create any goodwill with friendly foreign leaders, who will try to dismantle self-reliance and enterprise and will do so in a manner as disgusting to the entire nation as Trump’s behavior is viewed by the liberals. Newspapers won’t know how to handle this maverick and Sanders will find that the 25-year old student living in his or her parent’s basement with a G5 won’t cut it when the chips are down. And if he chooses someone like AOC as a running mate (forget Elizabeth Warren; there will be no feather in her cap from Sanders - pun intended), you can expect massive protests and probably some public violence. As for me, I’m looking forward to 2024, when the country might be able to sort through its more than one quarter billion citizens to find a few good candidates to lead this country to greater heights. We won’t be seeing it this year, if we survive this ugliness at all. If we don’t resolve to be citizens for the greater good, if we continue to social media our lives and forget other human beings, if we take stupid pride in being ignorant about the people and events that shaped this country, we will get what we deserve. Sometimes, what you deserve is also a negative. And illconceived social programs promising you things you deserve that are yours as a human right, regardless of how much skin you have in the game as a contributing citizen can only lead to the total destruction of the United States. A weekend with Bernie will seem like a lifetime in the gulag. As John Lennon sang more than a half-century ago, “you don’t know how lucky you are, boy, back in the US, back in the US, back in the USSR!” A spoof, yes, but today’s clueless young people don’t know that. Put them on bread and water, take away their freedom….hell, just take away their cellphones and social media…..and they will fold like a cheap suit. I do wish Biden good health. He will need it for Milwaukee and then to have any chance of not being totally annihilated by Trump, who needs to win a second term if for no other reason than keeping the haters at bay. Trump should win; Biden will find another six-figure job for his son and will get into some type of medical regimen to control his problem, Michael Bloomberg will reinstitute stop and frisk to recover some of his millions of dollars he spent when he realizes the stock market devalued his 60 billion down to less than a billion and Elizabeth Warren will apply for Native American grants, even though she will only be able to collect 1/1,034th of any award, which, on $100,000, would be less than a thousand dollars. What a country! Hopefully, we can continue to write with freedom, tongue in cheek, without some bureaucratic storm trooper looking over our shoulder. You know when MSNBC’S Chris Matthews is forced to “retire” on a moment’s notice for three things that were in no way disrespectful, hateful, insensitive or no more than a identify mistake after 40 years of being a liberal water carrier in politics and on television, that the Big Brother syndrome is more alive than not today. I’m no fan of Matthews but his “indiscretions” were reported with bias and with no clarity on what Matthews actually did. Meanwhile, I’m considering starting a charity for out-of-work comedians, such as the Smothers Brothers, who would be castrated today. Poor Mel Brooks. No more really funny movies. Get a life, people!… or lose the life you have. -0-

By Paula Johnson

Hi, Everyone!

email me! PaulaJ3036@gmail.com

Have you started looking at and purchasing all those beautiful spring flowers yet? Well, when I went to Lowe’s to pick up a couple cinder blocks for another project (which I haven’t done yet), I was naturally drawn to the flowers. Guess the florist in me will always be there. While looking at the flowers I remembered I had this big clay pot that I have had for years and never planted anything in it. A small area of the rim had gotten broken and my husband had suggested that we should throw it away. Well, I wouldn’t let that happen. I told him I was going to plant flowers in it. He just looked at me and shook his head. I think I know what he was thinking. And it had nothing to do with flowers. Ha!Ha!

Well, it has been 2 years, 1 month, and 11 days since he has passed away and I have finally planted flowers in that pot. Call me crazy but, I feel he inspiried me on that Sunday, to do something with that old pot, that I just had to hang onto. While walking around the garden center I found myself putting flowers in the buggie that I thought he would like. Added a couple large bags of potting soil and I was set. I did have to get our grandson, Dion, to help me straighten one of metal legs that had gotten bent over the years. After dumping in 1 and 1/2 bags of soil into the pot and adding the flowers, I think it looks pretty good. I think he would be proud that I finally added flowers to that old broken pot. So what will your next project be? Mine...........I don’t know. but, I know it will be fun. Sincerely, Paula Johnson

Words to GREAUX by AZALEA CARE AND MAINTENANCE Driving through region, one can easily see all the azalea bushes in full bloom. It seems like everything wants to be a couple weeks earlier this year. The two-month period last summer without rain has affected a lot of our landscape plants. The sudden freeze back in November didn’t help the situation either. Let’s put 2019 to rest and focus our efforts towards the spring growing season. I think that’s what the azaleas are telling us.

“REDEMPTION!” CUSTOM CREATION by: IMAGINATION MARKETING

PLAQUEMINES & WESTBANK PLUS!

Like all other spring blooming shrubs including gardenia, Indian hawthorn, and viburnum, azaleas should be pruned once they finish flowering. Azaleas, like the other spring blooming plants I listed, set their flower buds for next year during the summer months. If pruned too late in the year, the flowering schedule will be disrupted. Remove about one third of the plant during pruning. Some bushes may require removal of up to half of the plant. Apply fertilizer and water it in thoroughly. The results of a soil test would provide you with information on soil pH and elemental deficiencies. Soil sulfur is used as a soil amendment to lower soil pH whereas ground limestone is used to raise it. If you don’t have access to a soil report use a fertilizer for acid-loving shrubs and follow the label for general fertilizing instructions. Will Afton

Inspect plants throughout the growing season. Azalea lacebugs can be a serious issue during the heat of summer. Avoid them now by applying a systemic insecticide in the spring. Spider mites and scales can also become problematic. Those issues can be treated with oil or soap spray. Later in the fall, red headed azalea caterpillars may show up to feed on foliage. Treat them, along with any other caterpillar pests, using spinosad or Bacilius thuringiensis. Remember to always read and follow the product label when applying any type of pesticide, whether it be conventional, natural, or organic.

Capt. Hoop/ Our Freedom / Life is Good! Archived story from 3.14.19 Fishing with Leam This kid has been wanting to go fishing for a while. The last time we went he only caught 4 very small black drum under very bad conditions. Today was going to be different as I had promised. He was the first to hook up. After a very good battle he was the victor. A nice 31 incher. What a way to start the day.

This mangrove was 13.5 inches. The color is about the boldest I have ever seen. I did not get a closer look but it may have a cubera snapper. You never know what you find in this area. This jack crevalle was a big change from what we were doing all day. It took a lot of our fishing time away. I had to move off our spot and chase it just to keep from being spooled. The box filled up quickly. We had our limit 11:30.

We had a good day fishing but we were struggling to find some slot fish. This was my 5th place I had in mind to hit today. I was very disgusted at the first 3 places I looked at and went right around to the “hot spot”. We got some doubles and some keepers did show up. After about 2 hours of this and mom shivering in the cold fog and wind it was time to head in.

We stopped at another place on the way in just to check it out. The whole place has been changed. All the canes are dead. The land Mark’s and cover the fish had are all gone. As you travel to your old fishing places you will see the vast damage the scale has done to our rozo canes. We did find a good sized reddish and released it. We ended the day with a limit of 20 lane snapper and a trigger fish, some croaker, mangrove, channel mullet, black drum, and redfish. The second day we went for redfish. The sea fog was about the thickest I have ever seen it where we fished the first. When we casted our lines out we could not see our bright orange corks. There were nothing but bulls here. After a dozen of these we decided to go find some slots. As I entered the bay I noticed 2 other boats. We quickly found our 10 redfish we needed. I called my buddy in. He had left earlier than I and been fishing further inside the bay all the time. He only had 9 fish and needed 20 for the day. As I was trolling out he was already adding to hid limit As I entered the bay I noticed 2 other boats. We quickly found our 10 redfish we needed. I called my buddy in. He had left earlier than I and been fishing further inside the bay all the time.

I am looking to the next time I can get him out there. He is ready for the next trip. This kid can FISH!

We were back in by 11:00. We had lunch and I decided to go check out some places for the future. I invited them to join for a catch and release hunt. According to the radio every one in the area was struggling. I tucked into a small shallow pond and found some clean water.it held good bait. For some reason the reds were not feeding hard. They kept pulling the hook some where into the fight. We hooked 6 big reds but only managed 1 to the boat. What a great 2 days these guys had weit me. I wish I could produce like that all the time. My phone would be ringing off the dock. Life es Good!

Two good trips.

I had Mike and Rich for 2 days. The first day we did a near shore trip. Our targeted fish was lane snapper and anything else that was legal.
