Tony’s Takes A PENNY FOR YOUR THOUGHTS Back in 1990, I had expanded my television guide, TV Taters, into the Gulf Coast counties of Mississippi. I was on a roll, newly minted in publishing after 22 years of radio, television and agency work and I had a case of publisher’s Manifest Destiny. While delivering my guides in the Gulfport area, I discovered the office of The Penny Pincher, a classified newspaper with lots of want ads and display ads, no color, a fancy V-shaped classified layout and no fluff. It was founded and operated by Richard Gautreaux, a wiry and fiery Cajun former banker from Carencro, just up the road from Lafayette. Richard and his family were in the third year of operating this publication, which apparently was very popular and successful in Hancock, Harrison, Jackson and Stone Counties.

Louisiana Department of Wildlife & Fisheries LDWF Investigation Indicates Dead Pelicans Succumbed to Natural, Accidental Causes Several dead pelicans discovered recently in Plaquemines and St. Bernard parishes died from natural and accidental causes, according to an investigation by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries. LDWF’s Enforcement Division launched an investigation Feb. 19 when it was notified of several dead pelicans in Plaquemines and St. Bernard parishes. One of the pelicans was found stuck to a water level gauge. Agents retrieved that pelican and another dead pelican in the surrounding area then brought them to LDWF headquarters in Baton Rouge for necropsies, the equivalent of autopsies performed on humans. The necropsies found no illegal activity associated with the pelican deaths. The pelican found hanging from the water level gauge in the Caernarvon Diversion area in Plaquemines Parish accidentally hooked its pouch on a protruding screw. The pelican then broke its neck trying to free itself from the screw, according to the LDWF veterinarian The other pelican, found floating in shallow water, died from severe parasitism and emaciation. During winter, mortality rates in juvenile brown pelicans can be high. Young pelicans are not as good at fishing as mature pelicans and have higher rates of parasites. Young pelicans also have little to no fat reserves for the colder months and can die from hypothermia and malnutrition. Due to these naturally occurring events, the LDWF Enforcement Division is closing the investigation pending further evidence that would indicate the birds were illegally killed.

LDWF to Host Oyster Hatchery Field Day EVENT: The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries will host a field day at the Michael C. Voisin Oyster Hatchery in Grand Isle This event is free and open to the public. Attendees will begin with a tour of the oyster hatchery followed by a tour of the LSU Oyster Research and Demonstration Farm, and end their day with a visit to Grand Isle Sea Farms, a commercial oyster nursery and cage culture operation. WHEN: Monday, March 18 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. WHERE: Michael C. Voisin Oyster Hatchery, 133 LSU Drive, Grand Isle, La. BACKGROUND: The state run hatchery is run as a partnership between LDWF and Louisiana Sea Grant. Since 1993, an oyster hatchery has operated on Grand Isle, and in 2009, the hatchery operation was moved to its current location at the LDWF Fisheries Research Lab. This allows LDWF and LSG to merge their academic research projects and programs to benefit the commercial harvesting sector and aid in management of the public seed grounds. For more information, contact (225)765-3980, 1(855) 262-1764, or oversightprograms@wlf. la.gov. LDWF, Continued on pg. 4

Richard was behind the desk of what had been a shipping and mailing center but with the success of the paper, had been shut down and was strictly the Penny Pincher. Years later, I would reverse that move, adding Postal Plus to Bargains Plus! and giving my family another business to operate. Richard offered to help me deliver my guides, using his people, as long as I paid them the same thing he was paying them. I was impressed with the offer but declined because the money for such a luxury as paid delivery was not there. Richard offered other advise, the most important being about my publication. He asked me, “why are you publishing a TV guide?” I told him for the income and he asked me if the listings for the shows was provided free or did I have to pay for them. I told him we paid and then he said, “see my paper? All my content is paid advertising, affordable advertising for the average reader and small businessman and woman. Everyone wants to see their ad and either buy or sell items in this paper. You pay for half of your content and everyone but me pays for all of mine!” I could see it was a win-win situation. I had never seen a shopper, want ad paper, classified flyer…you name it. Then he said, “you should start one in Slidell. If you don’t, my family is bugging me about expanding and that’s where I’d go, and then it would be too late for you.” He was right and I took his lessons to heart when I began Bargains Plus! less than a year later (after two other shoppers began in late 1990 but both were out of business by February of 1991). Richard and I agreed to stay out of each other’s territories unless one of us decided to throw in the towel, as Richard did in 1993 in Pearl River County, where we expanded after Richard called me to tell me about his decision to pull out. Even after Richard’s death in 1995, the agreement was honored. In recent years, the Gautreaux family has suffered numerous deaths and tragic circumstances and with the erosion of papers like ours, advertisers and readership have declined. On December 20th of last year, they printed their final paper….31 years of a weekly that thousands depended on, just like they do with this publication. We made a decision a few weeks ago to try and fill that void. We’ve begun Penny Plus, a new edition of this paper in the areas where the Penny Pincher existed. And the demand and satisfaction is overwhelming. People still want papers like ours, even with social media penetration. And now the old Penny Pincher readers will also be able to read their new paper online on mobile devices or at home or work, with our flip-page technology which we’re provided for all our publications over the past ten years. We chose Penny to honor the Penny Pincher and Plus, which is the common name in both of our other publications. There is a strong link between the Southern Mississippi area on or abutting the Gulf Coast and the lake, river and Gulf parishes of southeast Louisiana where our two papers have been available beginning so many years ago. Both editions will share advertisers in many cases which will stretch budgets for those using our papers and reading us online. We welcome our new readers and advertisers and encourage them to send us “want ads” or classified ads, your choice of terminology. And we thank the Gautreaux family for their dedication and hard work that made the old Penny Pincher the talk of the Coast for two generations. We look forward to honoring that commitment and welcome you all aboard. Tony Onellion Publisher Penny Plus mypennyplus@gmail.com To read online: issuu.com/penneyplus -0-

LDWF’s Taxidermy Exhibition Contest Entry Deadline Extended to April 10 Feb. 19, 2019 - The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries’ (LDWF) taxidermy exhibition contest entry deadline has been extended to April 10, 2019. Contest judging will be held April 17, 2019, at LDWF headquarters in Baton Rouge beginning at 10 a.m. The contest is an opportunity for Louisiana taxidermists to showcase their work and help educate the general public on the state’s wildlife resources. For entry forms and contest rules, go to http://www.wlf.louisiana.gov/TaxidermyContest2019 . Taxidermy work has been displayed in the LDWF headquarters lobby in Baton Rouge since 1988. Displays of wildlife and fisheries species help the general public to get a close-up look at the animals that many may never experience. It also helps citizens to understand the conservation mission of LDWF and the threats facing many species in Louisiana. Taxidermists can enter several categories, including big game, upland game, waterfowl, game fish, amphibian life, reptile life and non-game. Winners will have their work displayed at LDWF headquarters and at LDWF field offices throughout the state. The winners will also be featured in the Louisiana Conservationist and The Wildlife Insider.

By Paula Johnson

Hi, Everyone!

email me! PaulaJ3036@gmail.com

Can you believe it’s already the end on the February! This year is flying by. Mardi Gras is here and the parades are rolling. I know I promised I would show you a heat shaped kitty ornament this time but with everyone running in and out the house with different schedules and such, I decided to tell you about a neat little thing to keep a spare key in. Sometimes people run out the house and forget there house key (I’ve done it before). And locked and shut the door. And no spare key under the Welcome mat or hidden anywhere. While browsing the internet I saw this really cute idea. They were selling these cute little containers (old medicine bottles) that were painted and had a variety of different things glued onto the caps. I did more research and discovered that most of these used E6000 glue and just any type of cute decoration for the top. You can place them in your flower garden, stick one on the inside of a flower pot, or in a rock garden. Just anywhere so when you forget to grab the house key, you are never locked out. I thought this was a really cute idea. I will be heading to one of the stores today to see what I can find that is neat and different to glue on top my bottle cap. I thought this was such a neat idea I just had to share it with you today. Well, that’s it for this time. So what will your next craft project be? Mine......I don’t know. But I know it will be fun. Sincerely, Paula Johnson

Drainage is fast becoming one of the most common stresses in Louisiana lawns. Week long rain events and humid weather present a multitude of problems. Lower areas of the yard will drain slower than the high areas. Any turfgrass will be affected by water logged soils and will thin out over time. Weeds that can handle those types of conditions win out and begin to take over. Use a good quality top soil or river sand/silt product to raise lower areas in the yard. The addition of a French drain can also help with drainage issues, especially in lawns that are flat and have little contour to direct the flow of water.

PRAYER TO THE HOLY SPIRIT Holy Spirit, you who made me see everything and showed me the way to reach my ideal. You who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget the wrong as done to me. I, in this short dialogue, want to thank you for everything and confirm once more that I never want to be seperated from you, no matter how great the material desire may be. I want to be with you and my oved ones in your perpetual glory. AMEN. Thank you for your love towards me and my loved ones. Say this prayer for 3 consecutive days. After 3 days, the favor requested will be granted even if it may appear difficult D.K.

Lastly, you can attack the weeds themselves. Weeds are just plants that are growing out of place. They can be described as annual (living one year) or perennial (living year after year). This is important to know when selecting herbicides to control them. Herbicides can be described as selective (kills certain types of plants and not others) or non-selective (kills all plants). The most popular non-selective herbicide is glysophate and it can be found in products like Round Up and Hi-Yield Killzall. Selective herbicides are commonly used in lawn situations, especially types that can be applied over the top of lawn with no effect to the turfgrass. Ortho Weed B Gon and Fertilome Weed Free Zone are popular selective herbicides that can be used in lawns. They provide good control of most broadleaf weeds growing in the lawn. Products like Image Nutsedge Killer, Sedgehammer, and Hi-yield Nutsedge Killer provide good control of sedge-like weeds growing in the lawn. All of the products listed above are known a post-emergent herbicides because they are applied to a plant that is already growing. Preemergent herbicides are used to kill plants as soon as they germinate. Annual weeds that come back from a seed are best controlled using pre-emergent herbicides. Dimension (dithiopyr) is the most popular herbicide of this type used by homeowners. Apply it in February and again in September for best results. Remember to always read and follow label instructions before applying any type of pesticide.

CAPT HOOP -- OUR FREEDOM Our Freedom Charters • 504-247-8459

Capt. Hoop/ Our Freedom / Life is Good! I had nothing on the books for this weekend. Friday afternoon Captain Eddie Burger of Fishvenice.com asked me if I wanted to deckhand for him Sunday.

There is a great near shore fishery here that is often passed up. We were first to hide out of the high seas. When I say we are going snapper fishing I am asked if they are open. Red snapper is CLOSED. There are several other snapper that are open year round that are not targeted. Today was the day to find the other fish. Saturday we had a flip tide with less than a half foot tide. On top of that the wind was blowing around 15 mph with gusts. The dense fog we have had for the last 2 weeks also made this a challenging day.

With 6 guys fishing and a good supply of bait we went (Catching) this was the biggest red snapper we caught. The smallest was about 6 inches long. Due to us fishing in shallow water the It was not until about noon before he had a chance to battle a good fish. We caught a few more ones we caught were all returned unharmed. I never even touched the fish. Eddie and I used fish dehookers which are quicker and easier on both us and the fish. after that but they only wanted few for eating. We released a few more and then a potential storm and the fog pushed us back to the dock.

We caught around 200 hundred red snapper. Around 25 trigger fish that also went back as well as 7 of these tiny soap fish. We found a few hardheaded cats. As you can see we had to work hard releasing all these just to b put some good fish in the box. We did quite well but worked very hard for our box of fish. We ended up with 44 lane snapper and 6 mangrove snapper giving us a total of 50 of them. The rest of the catch was reddish, black drum, croaker, ruby lipped grunt, and white trout. To say we had a good day is an under statement. Life is Good! They really enjoyed the day on the water with me. The next day the seas were 4 to 7 feet. There was no way we were going to stick our nose out in that stuff. Most people look for inshore - (Reds, specks, flounder, and black drum.) Or offshore
