In the ‘From the Garden to the Kitchen’ afterschool program students harvested beets from the school garden that were planted in the fall of last year. Layla Vieira, Deryni Hahn and Mia Swanson cleaned, roasted and peeled the beets that were later used on the fresh salad bar in the school’s cafeteria.

Tony’s Take DON’T LAUGH; WE COULD BECOME COMRADES-IN-ARMS BY NOVEMBER The destruction of political parties and practices as we knew them before the 21st century has taken an ominous turn even in the past three years. Forget the current President; his flaws are well-documented but he’s getting things done - American things, like more jobs, more international cooperation, better trade deals despite the double-edged Chinese tariff deals.

Louisiana Department of Wildlife & Fisheries Two Men Cited for Oyster Theft in Plaquemines Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries enforcement agents cited two men for alleged oyster violations on Feb. 19. Agents cited Joseph A. Slavic, of Belle Chasse, 38, and Todd Sylve, 37, of Port Sulphur, for unlawfully taking oysters from a private lease and failing to have written permission. Agents were on patrol in Bay Adams in Empire when they observed a vessel actively dredging oysters. Agents boarded the vessel and made contact with Slavic and Sylve. Agents determined the men were harvesting oysters off of a private oyster lease without written permission. Agents seized 27 sacks of oysters and returned them to the private oyster lease. Unlawfully taking oysters from a private lease brings a $900 to $950 fine and up to 120 days in jail or both, plus forfeiture of anything seized. The men could also face having their oyster harvester licenses revoked by LDWF for up to one year. The violators could also be sentenced to perform 40 hours of community service and only be allowed to harvest oysters from a vessel that is equipped with a vessel monitoring device for up to one year. Taking oysters without written permission carries a $400 to $950 fine and up to 120 days in jail.

There was a time that both parties dealt civilly with each other in public and in the physical political arenas of Washington. No more. Now, we are governed by children, petulant brats looking for power, prestige and personal gain, even more dramatically than in the past. And look what the Democrats have produced: a recently-turned Republican party billionaire whose personal life makes Trump’s look like a monk, running for President, with no popular support and even less personality, charisma or sense of teamwork. A whacko Independent, not even a party member, who apparently prefers the Moscow Motel as a honeymoon site and thinks the world of Fidel Castro. Uncle Bernie would have us sitting at the government trough (not table, the table is reserved for those in power who think like Bernie) and having us beg like dogs for what should be ours by our inalienable rights, Bill of Rights, Constitution and American way of life. Screw you, whack-o! An over-the-hill Alzheimers candidate who never even was cool in his era of the 60’s and 70’s and is a pathetic shell of what might have been maybe 30 years ago. A woman who wants to claim Indian heritage with about as much Indian ancestry as a first generation Irishman. A dude who really does look like Alfred E. Neuman, who makes me say, “what? Me? I worry!” when I hear some of his plans for the United States and when I review what he laughingly considers his “in country” military duty and who has little support from the African American community. A decent candidate in Amy Klobuchar, whose Midwest sensibilities might work if she was a more likable person to her support staff and didn’t embrace much of the radical leftist agenda. Besides Mike Bloomberg, whose more appropriate name should be Mike Wiltberg, there is another billionaire in the race with no real support. Tom Steyer might have some decent talking points but he has no clue on how to market himself. Bloomberg is a self-made billionaire but his ability to waste away hundreds of millions of dollars tells me he’s the one you want to face in a winner-takeall poker game. Then there’s the behind-the-scenes liberals, whose lack of currency in this country has them stirring up the undereducated and unsophisticated and inexperienced social media junkies, who know how to navigate an app and a Smartphone but otherwise couldn’t find their ass with both hands. Children of Boomers, who raised “buddies”, not children, who would rather buy an NFL jersey than a stake in their or other’s futures. Those who feel entitled because someone with more grey matter told them they should be. Ignorance is the new flavor of this generation. They would like to think they are compassionate and “woke” but they have been sleeping in dumbness and stupidity so long they may never “woke up”. Most of them have never known the more basic human excretion called sweat: they’re like Jesse Jackson, who never shed any sweat nor blood for that matter, like thousands of his generation’s black and white brethren did in the 60’s while Jackson was ordering fried chicken and becoming a “reverend.” Like Joe Biden and Al Sharpton (a really misnamed person), his time is past but the efforts to hang on keep him around, like Hillary Clinton. Both pathetic has-beens. We’re not looking for a pleasant 2020 with this atmosphere. We’re looking tor enough of the country to come to its senses and realize there is no free lunch and no free ride. Those who built the rides and made the lunch with their courage, perseverance, dedication and ability to cope aren’t going to let those with no skin in the game just walk in and steal a share (or the whole thing). If it happens, then this country has ceased to exist and your home, workplace and commute will be overrun with people who need help but not the keys to your life. It’s your choice, America. Grow up! -0MARBLE TOP Table with 4 chairs $250 FIRM, like new. Outside table with 4 chairs $40 FIRM, good condition. Life Gear Exercise Walker $30, good condition. Call 985-710-3674.

Words to GREAUX by DISEASE CONTROL IN HOME LAWNS The recent weather patterns haven’t been too lovely but plants have started to grow and trees have begun to produce new leaves. Not far behind, are our warm season turfgrass lawns. As the weather continues to warm and the days continue to lengthen, the lawn will eventually regain its green color. One of the most important times during the life of a turfgrass is the spring green-up period. During winter, warm-season turfgrasses like centipedegrass, St. Augustinegrass, bermudagrass, and zoysiagrass go through a dormant period of little to no growth. In early Will Afton spring, these grasses slowly return to an active growing state. It is during this greening-up phase where lawns are vulnerable to pests. The multiple shades of green and lush foliage dominate the current landscape, but spring brings about the resurgence of all sorts of life. The warm days and cool nights favor the growth of many fungal organisms. Pathogenic fungi like Rhizoctonia solani can cause severe problems in warm season turfgrass early in the year during the greening-up phase. The disease caused by this organism is called large patch when it infects a warm-season turfgrass species and they call it brown patch when it infects a cool-season turfgrass species. Of the warm-season turfgrass grown in the Deep South, St. Augustinegrass is the most susceptible to this disease but when pressure is high, it can be problematic in all species. The initial symptoms of large patch disease are irregularly shaped yellow circles in the lawn. In many cases the irregular shaped circles seem odd and strange. The organism feeds on the grass blades. The damaged blades start to yellow and eventually turn brown. The outside edges of the infected areas contain most of the activity and can continue spreading rather quickly under optimum conditions. It is not uncommon to see the middle of the dead patch begin to regrow with new foliage as the circles start to resemble rings. Once this disease has been identified, develop a plan to help prevent the spread. In most situations, short term control is best achieved using a granular type fungicide. Several active ingredients are labeled for control of large patch disease and can be used in home lawns. Some of the more popular options available are mancozeb, myclobutanil, propiconazole, and azoxystrobin. Environmental ques like excess rainfall, extended periods of high humidity, water logged soils, warm days (85-90°F), and cool nights (60-75°F) trigger large patch disease outbreaks. If symptoms arise, it is recommended to make a fungicide application to the entire lawn. Take note of which active ingredient was used. A second application may be needed later and a different active ingredient should be used to help prevent disease resistance. Long term control of fungal diseases like large patch essentially boils down to water management because the organisms need water to carry out their everyday functions. Soil compaction is a common problem in urban soils all over South Louisiana. The water infiltration rate is dramatically reduced in compacted soils. Water allowed to collect at the waters’s surface can help spread many fungal diseases throughout the lawn. Lawn aerification is a way to improve compacted soil and help regain some vertical drainage. French drains and other types of underground drainage can also be effective in managing excess water. Don’t forget about automatic irrigation systems. Set them to come on early in the morning so that any excess can be evaporated during the day. Adjust the frequency so that the soil has a chance to completely dry out. If rains are sufficient, it might be advisable to turn the system off all together. For more information on disease control in the home lawn check out the LSU AgCenter’s website at www.lsuagcenter.com.

PLAQUEMINES FISHING REPORTS

CAPT HOOP -- OUR FREEDOM Our Freedom Charters • 504-247-8459

Capt. Hoop/ Our Freedom / Life is Good!

On this day I decided to go down to Venice for breakfast. It was around 9:00 so I stopped at Changes. As I was eating 4 men from Minnesota asked me where they could go within 20 miles to have fun around here. Nothing here but fishing. They decided to book the day with me. I left the dock after 11. Our first fish on our first stop was this guy’s first redfish ever. Talk about spoiling him right off.

As long as it is calm enough so you can get out the fish are doing their thing. In some cases they are jumping in the boat as shown by this outstanding catch by Captain Drew of Paradise Outfitters. Congratulations Captain That would be our biggest fish of the day. We bounced around the remainder of the day trying to stretch every redfish we caught. They gave us a lot of action though. We also caught many sheepshead. When they are flopping around the pliers get good control of the fins which are so dangerous. The black drum also were cooperative with the action. We also had to pick through a ton of these in order to put a few in the box.

Around 3:30 I could see signs of the fog starting to form. I told them we would have to head back soon. Well the fish started biting even better. We were getting low on our bait which by the way all survived. What ever it was in the live well did not hurt the shrimp at all. As a matter of fact I believe it gave them strength.

After a day of hard fishing and navigating the rolling seas Fish Venice Charters managed 3 respectable wahoo. I did extensive detailing work on my boat over the winter. Do not know what got into my live well but when I got to my designated fishing spot I had a well full of foam. My first thought was a hundred live shrimp all dead. The more foam I took out the more foam was appearing. All I could do was to net out some shrimp and put them in a bucket of water for use.

We had a good bunch of last minute action.

We ended our day with a nice double. About 3:30 I headed in. By now I was sure we were going to see some fog before the dock. I put my radar on and as I got to the gas plant a fog bank was in front of us. We almost beat the fog in. We ended up with 38 pounds of fish in the box for our afternoon excursion. Life is Good! One correction in first picture it is captain Drew of Paradise Outfitters not paradise plus.

Turlich Jr. is proud to announce the recipients of the Plaquemines Parish Sheriff’s Office (PPSO) Employees of the Quarter from October - December 2019. The program awards an employee in an enforcement position as well as an administrative role and correctional employee at the Plaquemines Parish Detention Center (PPDC). Deputy Doug Wattigny was recommended as the Enforcement Deputy of the Quarter for his sustained performance that included several felony arrests.
