Chef Ryan Galle worked with kindergarten classes on a lesson about blue corn. Belle Chasse Academy is a proud school partner in the Emeril’s Culinary Garden and Teaching Kitchen program and lessons like this help teach children about the appreciation of the source of food. For this lesson, Chef read the book Corn by Gail Gibbons, discussed the recipe they would be making, mixed the ingredients and made the pancakes. Students then got to taste the creation and see firsthand one of the ways corn can be used for cooking.

Tony’s Take ARE YOU READY FOR SOME MORE FOOTBALL? I’M NOT. The debut of the XFL Sunday met with some success, considering there are only eight teams in the league and the rosters look like recycling is alive and well in professional football. For one, having year-round football is like having year-round autumn or spring; it’s the anticipation of the change that’s the most appealing to seasonal differences, not the actual seasons. The same holds true for professional football Lite, another effort to extract faux excitement from people who just can’t move on to another season without withdrawal symptoms. Oh, yeah, the league will be full of gimmicks and the 30 to 40-something radio network announcers, barely over sounding like adolescents in their overwrought verbal stylings, will have something more about which to pretend to sound like experts. But, ho-hum, it’s time for renewal and that means supporting a 150-year old sport that already is on life support because of its ridiculously structured payroll systems and it’s elitist menu of acronyms for various benchmarks of performance. Of course, that’s major league baseball, where teams like the Yankees and the Dodgers spend hundreds of millions to wind up being dumped in the first rounds of the postseason. We really don’t care any more, major league baseball. If you want a real challenge, broadcast the games in Spanish, since 60% of the rosters are Hispanic, and offer a real mental challenge to those fantasy people and stat chasers who don’t really appreciate what the sport is: a one-of-one battle between two skill sets, played in a relaxed and non-hysterical setting, where a fan can go get a snack or take a bathroom break and not miss some momentus singular play for the ages. Geez, how much more hype do you think will result in added dollars? People are already stupid enough to spend $3,500 to $5,000 for a crappy seat at the Super Bowl, where the game’s actual name has to be tiptoed around so as not to offend its incredibly superior place in sports hierarchy. The Big Game? Give me a break! Oh, we also have the Never Boring Association, known as the NBA, where friendship and dynasties rule the trade market and last year’s powerhouses can be laid low by injuries, greed or indifference. Does anyone really care which overhyped Los Angeles team will go to the playoffs? Can the Milwaukee Bucks finally garner a world title in a major sport for the first time in that brewery city since the 1950’s when the Milwaukee Braves had a great baseball team? Meh! Thank goodness for high school and college sports, where seasons are limited, money is not the elephant in the room and some participants (most, actually), compete for the thrill and the desire to wear the colors of their team. Yes, college football is becoming too greedy as well, but the competition, the rivalries, the social interconnections, the selection process to match the best teams in meaningful postseason games is still fairly awesome. However, in football there are at least 20 bowls too many and that’s the result of giving “participation trophies” to youngsters in the ’90’s and beyond. Also, NCAA March Madness needs to end this “First in, first out”, extra participation of teams beyond the already bloated 64 squads that have a chance to win six games in a row to become national basketball champions.

Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) agents began investigating the case on June 10, 2013 when two vessels collided in Flat Boat Pass near Venice. Agents were initially told by Demoll, Giles and Scott that a 28-foot vessel being operated by Scott collided with a 24-foot bay boat being operated by Steven “Brad” Malcolm, 33, of Madisonville, resulting in the death of Malcolm. Two other passengers on the bay boat sustained injuries.

-0-

After further investigation, agents determined that Demoll was the operater of the 28-foot vessel that belonged to a company owned by Giles. Demoll also left the scene of the incident. Office of Attorney General Brooke Harris and Matthew Derbes prosecuted the case for the state.

Words to GREAUX by SPRING FLOWERING TREES

February can be a little bland in the South Louisiana landscape. Our coldest month of the year isn’t known for anything spectacular. However, if you look closely, you’ll notice a few trees stand out amongst the rest. See below for a list of spring flowering trees that can be added to your landscape. • Cherry and cherry-like trees such as Taiwan flowering cherry (Prunus campanulata), Kwansan cherry (P. serrulata), and purple leaf plum (P. cerasifera) are all native to Asia. They are some of the showiest late winter/early spring bloomers in the landscape. The Taiwan cherry Will Afton blooms rosey=pink flowers in late January/early February depending on temperatures. The Kwansan cherry produces large, heavy rosey-pink blooms in early spring. Despite the name, purple leaf plum is actually another species of cherry. It is known for its dark marron purple that bleaches into a bronze purple later during the summer. All three trees will reach between 15-20ft tall and 10-15ft wide. • Grancy Graybeard (Chionanthus virginicus) is a small native tree occurring throughout the Gulf coast. It averages about 20ft tall and produces white fringe like flowers starting in March. The Chinese fringe tree (C. retusus) has a similar habit but produces a darker green leaf and a slightly showier flower. • Parsley hawthorn (Crataegus marshallii) and green hawthorn (C. viridis) are both native trees that occur from Virginia to Florida and all the way west into Texas. They both average around 20ft tall and 15ft wide. Both trees typically bloom in late March. The green hawthorn produces white flowers and the parsley hawthorn produces white to pinkish colored flowers. whereas parsley hawthorn flower are not fragrant but it is reported that green hawthorns produce an unpleasant odor. • Eastern redbud tree (Cercis canadensis) is one of the most popular native trees grown in the nursery industry. It is known for its beautiful heart shaped leaves and tiny pea-like flowers. The magenta colored blooms appear in late February and March before the foliage. Redbuds are also known for their yellow fall color. The cultivar ‘Forest Pansy’ produces scarlet-purple leaves in the beginning of the season that eventually fade to green in the summer months. • Deciduous magnolias, commonly referred to as Japanese magnolias, are extremely popular late winter flowering trees. The most popular cultivars are called the ‘Little Girl’ magnolias. ‘The Little Girl’ magnolias were bred from interspecific cross between lily magnolia (Magnolia liliiflora) and star magnolia (M. stellata). Some of the more popular cultivars and their flower colors are ‘Ann’ (deep purple-pink), ‘Susan’ (red-purple, and ‘Jane’ (light pink-purple). All three of these trees have a multi-branched habit and reach heights about 15ft tall/ • Serviceberry trees (Amelanchier arborea) are an understory tree that occurs naturally from Florida to Texas and all the way to Canada. The tree produces an abundance of white flowers in early/late March depending on temperature. It also produces an edible fruit similar to a blueberry. Make for a great wildlife plant. Check your local nursery for current availabilities and build local demand by asking for these plants by name.

PLAQUEMINES FISHING REPORTS

CAPT HOOP -- OUR FREEDOM

These 2 guys came in together. The black drum was over 16 inches so it was invited to join us for supper in the evening. The redfish was loaded with spots on both sides. It was a beautiful fish that will make someone happy in the future. It was under the 16 inch minimum so it was released. These redfish grow an inch a month until they reach about 16 inches then the growth rate slows down.

Capt. Hoop/ Our Freedom / Life is Good!

Let the season begin! I had some things done to my boat and had to strip it down almost completely so i could put a few coats of gelcoat on the inside. I added a seat behind the leaning post. I also had a new skeg welded to the motor. Wonder how long that will last. Every thing checked out so it was time to put some blood on it.

I even got into the action putting this black drum in the box. We kept moving around looking for something to reward us for our efforts. I covered from Hospital bay in Boothville all the way north to Port sulphur.

I invited Joe to do some scouting with me. My customer for the next day has been here for a few days and was waiting for the rest of his family to show up that evening. I told him not to expect much but he was welcome to hop aboard. We went about 100 feet from the launch and started getting bites. Joe had 3 undersize redfish right off.

Our trophy of the day was a good fat sheepshead. Although Harold thought the fish was small, this creature actually ran right past the boat then started pulling drag. The fish decided to take a run around the boat. I thought he had our first keeper red until I got a glimps of it. Just a stubborn sheepshead. We ended our day with 8 fish in the box and ended up releasing the small one in the lower right. It was still alive so I gave it my blessing and i formed the fish it was it’s “lucky day”.

It looked like we were being taught a fishing lesson by old Joe. There was action but only one person was having fun. Eventually Harold got in the action. He caught his first sheepshead ever. At least we were catching although everything was small.

One last picture of the stud sheepshead. A trophy in anybody’s books.

He finally got into the 14 to 15 1/2 inch reds. They were feeding well. The tails were lit up blue.

On the offshore scene we had some bragging rights gained this week by Captain Eddie Burger of Fish Venice Charters with this 96 pound wahoo. And Captsin Scott

Leger of Paradise Outfitters with a 230 pound yellowfin tuna. Congratulations to both captains and the companies they represent. Life is Good!

Even though we had a good bite the goal was to scout the west side and get an idea what is available for the future as well as any important changes in the area such as silted in areas or new sand bars.
