Tony’s Take LSU LEADS THE NATION IN SKILL POSITION AWARD NOMINATIONS The LSU Tigers likely will be shut out for any defensive player honors this year but the offense and coaching ranks will more than make up for it. The country’s most exciting offense and best offensive skill set of runners, passers and receivers should garner at least three of the national awards pending. Start with Joe Burrow, whose odds to secure the Heisman Trophy next week are prohibitive. His closest pursuers are a pair of Ohio State players, defensive end Chase Young and former Georgia quarterback Justin Fields. Also in the running are former Alabama quarterback Jalen Hurts now at Oklahoma and a pair of running backs from Wisconsin and Oklahoma State. Burrow’s calm demeanor, unparalleled statistics and leadership abilities have led LSU to its first number one ranking since 2011and his story is amazing. Because of this, the Davey O’Brien Award for the nation’s top quarterback and the Maxwell Trophy for the nation’s most outstanding player should be his as well. Burrow has created a one-season legacy that should place him as the number one all-time quarterback from the SEC with the possible exception of Peyton Manning. La’Marr Chase is the late season favorite to win the Biletnikoff Award for the nation’s outstanding receiver. Chase leads the country in average yards per catch and touchdown catches and is among the leaders for total yards and total receptions. Chase is a clutch receiver, rarely dropping a pass or running an incorrect route. His yards after the catch are off the charts. Clyde Edwards-Helaire is a finalist for the Hornung Award, given to the most versatile player in the country. Edwards-Helaire has more than surprised the country with his tough, evasive running, his pass-catching abilities and his role as a kickoff return man. He is also a finalist for the Doak Walker Award for the best running back in the country. Both Coach Ed Orgeron and Assistant Coach Joe Brady are up for the Bear Bryant and Frank Broyles awards for the best head coach and assistant coach, respectively. Brady’s signature offensive plan, paired with the rest of the offensive coaching team, has made LSU the most feared team in the country. And what else can we say in praise of the Cajun who would be king. Meanwhile, the Tigers get ready to take on Georgia, the nation’s number four team, for the SEC Championship in Atlanta this weekend. The Tigers will be a solid 6 to 9 point favorite over a team that has shown little ability to score more than 20 points against better competition. This writer doesn’t think the Bulldogs will score more than 14 points while the Tigers should roll with at least 35 points. The last time they met in Atlanta, the LSU defense spearheaded a 42-point second half outburst after the Tigers trailed at halftime, 10-0. The Tigers won that game, 42-10 without a true major college quality quarterback but then the so-called coaching brain trust of Les Miles shut down and the Tigers were shut out by Alabama in the national championship game.

CHRIST THE KING PARISH SCHOOL FUN RUN Christ the King Parish School held its 2nd annual Boosterthon Fun Run on Friday, November 15, 2019. Students/faculty/staff were asked to get pledges to raise funds to upgrade classroom equipment and play equipment. They competed for two weeks to win challenges and win prizes. Everyone showed support by getting pledges for laps run and then enjoyed a beautiful day to run the race.

LDWF Announces 2020 Derelict Crab Trap Cleanup Events; Volunteers Needed BATON ROUGE, La.--The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) will again host its annual Derelict Crab Trap Rodeo volunteer cleanup events during the month of February. The Derelict Crab Trap Removal Program was initiated by LDWF in 2004 to address the removal of derelict and abandoned crab traps. Derelict traps increase ghost-fishing mortality of blue crabs and other species captured incidentally, interfere with other commercial fishing gear types, create navigation hazards, and degrade the beauty of our natural environment. Commercial fishermen gear fees fund the volunteer-based program, and since its inception has disposed of more than 41,000 derelict crab traps. Last year, LDWF, Lake Pontchartrain continued on page 5

That won’t happen again. If the Tigers do it right, they will be playing Clemson in the Fiesta Bowl to determine if they will play for the national championship, again, for the fourth time this century, in New Orleans. They most likely will play Ohio State in a rematch of the 2007 championship game. That means LSU could play the number four, number three and number two teams in the country to win the title. No weak sister like Notre Dame or Washington as in years past. This truly will be a premier test of two great teams with great offenses. LSU will have the offensive advantage, Ohio State the defensive, special teams should be a wash but the intangibles and coaching will definitely be on the LSU side of the ledger. Get by Georgia and an untested Clemson team and the irony of having a former Ohio State quarterback face down his former team while a former Georgia quarterback faces a long-time SEC nemesis, LSU, will be two back stories that will keep the keyboards clicking for at least 10 days. If it comes down to an air game, LSU will win comfortably. They will face the best defensive player they’ve seen this year but not the best defense. Ohio State hasn’t been super impressive against Penn State or Michigan defensively but the were against Wisconsin. Everyone else they played was a weak sister, unlike LSU, whose schedule was one of the four toughest in the country this season, having faced Florida, Auburn, Alabama, Mississippi State and Georgia’s defenses and prevailing. They’ll do the same against the Buckeyes.

Words to GREAUX by CHRISTMAS TREE CARE It seems like the month of November began and ended like a flash in the pan. It also seems like we say that line every year. When end of year festivities make their annual return to the calendar, we find ourselves with busy schedules. Schools go dormant for the holidays season just as the red maple tree in your front yard went dormant going into the fall season. Work schedules will adapt to follow a similar trend. One of the more memorable things about this time of year are the smells that fill the air. Fresh cut Christmas trees and hand-woven garland are one of those amazing smells and the Friday after Thanksgiving is one of the Will Afton busiest times of the year for Christmas tree retailers. Garden centers and nurseries that stay open year around will most likely bring in fresh cut Christmas trees for the holiday season. Seasonal vendors set up shop on busy street corners to let everyone see their stock of Douglas fir, Noble fir and Fraser fir trees for sale. I get questions all the time about Christmas trees. Everyone wants to know what the best tree is to buy. Well, believe it or not, if you properly care for the tree then you can pick out a tree based on its color, texture, or shape. ‘Frazer Fir’ and ‘Douglas Fir’ trees have a nice blue green color to their needles and when crushed have a pleasant flavor. ‘Noble Fir’ is as noble as you thought it was. These trees have gorgeous shapes and short stiff branches. This may come in handy if you have heavier ornaments to hang on the tree. ‘Colorado Blue Spruce’ trees have excellent pyramidal form and beautiful blue-grey needles. ‘Scotch Pine’ trees are bright green and are often sold as a value priced option. The first step in properly caring for a recently harvested Christmas tree so that it retains most of its needles and color throughout the season is by making a fresh cut. Once severed from their root system, the trees lose their ability to effectively take up water and nutrients. Remove ½ inch of the bottom of the tree using a sharp saw or chain saw. This cut is commonly referred to as a “fresh cut” and many businesses may offer to do this for you at no extra charge. This should be done right before you set the tree up in its location. If the fresh cut was done at the tree lot, then make sure you go straight home and immediately bring the tree inside for set-up. Once adjusted to stand up straight and look good from every direction add water to the bowl and check it often in order to keep it full. Don’t worry with nutrient solutions, preservers and other type products. Just keep it full of plain water and you won’t have to worry about sweeping up many needles.

Louisiana Department of Wildlife & Fisheries LDWF Announces 2020 Derelict Crab Trap Cleanup Events; Volunteers Needed Basin Foundation, volunteers, Barataria-Terrebonne National Estuary Program (BTNEP), Coastal Conservation Association (CCA) of Louisiana, and members of the recreational and commercial fishing community assisted in retrieving more than 4,000 abandoned crab traps. Volunteers LDWF encourages volunteers to participate in these events to make this crab trap rodeo successful and keep our Sportsman’s Paradise pristine. Volunteers will help collect traps in the field, unload traps at the dock, and count traps as they are unloaded. Commercial fishermen are highly encouraged to participate, as their experience with the local waters and ability to stack traps on their vessels is valuable. Event organizers will provide boat owners with the equipment needed to collect the traps; however, boat owners are responsible for transporting traps in their vessels. Removing abandoned crab traps is a wet and dirty job, so please wear appropriate clothing and water-resistant gear. Volunteers should bring their own personal floatation device, which should be worn at all times while on the water. Lunch will be provided to all volunteers as a small token of appreciation for their help to keep our waterways free and clean of derelict crab traps. Barataria Basin: A dedicated volunteer day will be held on Saturday, February 8, 2020, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Jean Lafitte Harbor located at 4932 Kenal Road, Lafitte, LA 70067. PLAQUEMINES FISHING REPORTS

CAPT HOOP -- OUR FREEDOM Our Freedom Charters • 504-247-8459

Capt. Hoop/ Our Freedom / Life is Good! Every now and then i take Leam out fishing. He is getting quite good at casting. With this particular fish he casted about a foot from the canes. The cork went down instantly and the fight was on. It even went back into the canes and started to wrap them. Leam listened to me and by using constant pressure instead of trying to horse it out he was able to guide the fish to the point of least resistance and guided it out of the canes. Once in the open it was a matter of fighting it to the net. This all made for a great vidio that his aunt took. My next trip was with some guys that had never caught a redfish before. Actualy one of them had to be shown how to hold the reel and cast. I am used to this so i just help out automatically. This was a great way to breaknthis gentleman in.

The keepers kept coming on a slow pace. This was going to be a day that would be drawn out. This day was a fishing day not a catching day. We were making it work though. As I moved from place to place one would come out for the tasty snack that we were offering. If ther were old enough we would invite them to have dinner with our families at our house. I moved into a canal that usually holds a fish or two and was not disappointed. When the cork went under the drag started singing. There was no doubt as to the size of this beauty. The fish was running at will until it got tired. The water was splashing and the mud was churning up as this beauty fought to get free. This customer is now spoiled!

The variety was also available. I only kept the bigger sheepshead. There were no real big ones on this day. We were only able to keep a couple of these tasty critters. Lou Lowe and 2 of his fellow military officers were with me for a day of fishing. The action was slow w We made a day of it pickin away at them. The trip was about his buddies that he wanted to thank for the friendship they had developed through the military. We let Lou get into the action also. The pickings were not on fire. This was during the transition time when the fish were just moving into our fall and winter pattern. I was forced to go into protected waters due to the winds which also limited our action. This hampered me but did not stop me from putting a few beautiful fish into the box. You can see the canes being blown to the left in this picture.

We ended up with a respectable box for our efforts. The winds could have made our day easier but we had to work with the cards we were dealt. It was another hard but successful adventure. Life is Good! The fish are now into their fall/winter homes. The trout bite is on fire and the rest of the fish are chewing. Go get them!

PPSO YOUNG MARINES GATHER AT ANNUAL BIRTHDAY BALL CELEBRATION

Sheriff Gerald A. Turlich, Jr. announces the arrests of Tedrick Williams, 43, of New Orleans and On Saturday, October 19, 2019, the Plaquemines Parish Sheriff’s Office (PPSO) Young Marines were able to ditch their camouflage uniforms and sweaty work-out clothes to gather for the Annual Birthday Ball Celebration at the Belle Chasse Auditorium. During the course of the evening, 23 Young Marines were honored for their accomplishments and diligence over the past year. Also, the adult instructors and volunteers were recognized as they received letters of appreciation for their dedication to the program after logging a total of approximately 900 volunteer hours. Young Marine Private First-Class Joshue Riley received the honor of being awarded the Unit Young Marine of the Year. The Guests of Honor were U.S. Marine Corps Major Sean Dillion and Young Marine Sergeant Major Harrison Vo. Major Dillion resides in Belle Chasse and is currently assigned to the 4th Marine Aircraft Wing in New Orleans. Major Dillion joined the Marine Corps in 2003 after graduating from the University of Chicago and is a Huey Helicopter Pilot that served during Operation ENDURING FREEDOM in 2011. Major Dillion expressed the importance of integrity, accountability and acceptance of failure. Young Marine Sergeant Major Harrison Vo has been a member of the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office Young Marine Program since enrolling in 2013 at the age of 11. In a traditional Marine Corps style ceremony, there was a cake-cutting ceremony, dinner and dancing. A special thanks and appreciation to LA23 BBQ in Belle Chasse and Copeland’s restaurant in Harvey for donating the wonderful meal. “This was a well-deserved event full of fun and camaraderie for all the Young Marines after the hard work and dedication over the course of the past year,” said Sheriff Gerald A. Turlich, Jr. “We’re looking forward to continuing this great program and a special thanks to all the instructors and volunteers that make it possible.” The Young Marines Program is national youth organization for boys and girls, ages 8-18 or to the completion of high school. The Young Marines promote a healthy, drug-free lifestyle through our core value of teamwork, leadership and discipline. The PPSO Young Marines are now accepting applications for the next class scheduled to commence in March of 2020. Before the closures take place, LDWF will mail notices to licensed crab fishermen and seafood dealers informing them that crab traps must be removed from within the closure areas during the closure period, and all remaining crab traps will be considered abandoned and may be removed by agency personnel or volunteers. These proposed trap removal regulations do not provide authorization for access to private property. Individual landowners can only provide authorization to access private property. Crab traps may be removed only between one half-hour before sunrise to one half-hour after sunset. Only LDWF, or those designated by LDWF, will be authorized to remove derelict crab traps in the closure areas. Abandoned traps must be brought to LDWF designated disposal sites and may not be taken from the closed area. CALL FREE AD HOTLINE Hi! I'm Lennox! I'm about 8 years young and I recently became heartworm negative! I love people and I have so much love to give, you'll have a loyal munchkin shadow for life! Kids are cool, other pets not so much, but to be fair, the people who used to have me made me a little nervous about them, so I'd rather remain an only child. That's ok, right? I was used as a bait dog my whole life until someone found me and I was brought to PAWS. There, I received medical care, behavior testing, lots of love and TLC! The shelter is closing soon though and I'm still looking for my forever family. It's been on my Christmas list for years. I've spent my last holidays in the shelter. Hoping to spend this Christmas in a home! Please come visit me. I don't want to be here by myself when the shelter closes.

LDWF Agents Cite Ama Man for Fishing Violations in Plaquemines Parish A Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries enforcement agent cited a Louisiana man for alleged fishing violations in Plaquemines Parish on Nov. 20. The agent cited Tyrone Gauthier Jr., 22, of Ama, for possessing over 10 red drum, taking undersized red drum and taking undersized black drum. An LDWF agent observed Gauthier Jr. leaving a fishing spot and conducted a creel limit and license inspection. Upon making contact with the subject, the agent found Gauthier Jr. in possession of 26 red drum of which 24 were under the legal size limit of 16 inches. The agents also found him in possession of three undersized black drum. The daily limit on red drum is five fish per licensed fisherman. The agent seized all of the fish and donated them to a local charity. Taking undersized black drum and undersized red drum each brings a $100 to $350 fine and up to 60 days in jail. Possessing over 10 red drum carries a $400 to $950 fine and up to 120 days in jail. Gauthier also faces a $25 fine per undersized red drum totaling $600. Gauthier may also face civil restitution for the fish totaling $688.22.
