Louisiana Department of Wildlife & Fisheries LDWF Releases Rehabilitated Black-Bellied Whistling Ducks Onto Manchac WMA Following Oil Spill Nov. 1, 2019 – The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) released three ducks Oct. 22 onto Manchac Wildlife Management Area (WMA) following their rehabilitation after being oiled at a refinery near Belle Chasse. The three black-bellied whistling ducks were safely captured by LDWF’s Oil Spill Response Team then taken to Wildlife Response Services for the rehabilitation process. Laura Carver, LDWF’s Oil Spill Response Coordinator, worked with state trustees A black-bellied whistling duck is released on Manchac Wildlife Management Area. and the company responsible for the oil spill to institute wildlife hazing and oil spill clean-up operations to limit impacts to wildlife. “The three ducks were heavily oiled and two of them were emaciated,’’ Carver said. “Thanks to the rehabilitation process all three were back to a healthy weight prior to release and were observed swimming and diving in the pool provided for them in their pen. “We choose to release them on Manchac WMA (in St. John the Baptist Parish) due to its favorable habitat type and the proximity to the rehabilitation center in Livingston Parish. When oiled wildlife is rehabilitated in Louisiana following an oil spill we typically release them at one of LDWF’s WMAs or refuges or a national wildlife refuge in the state.’’ The first duck was captured Oct. 5 using a dip net. It was swimming in a heavily oiled portion of a flooded nine-acre field. The other two ducks, caught on Oct. 12, were captured using dip nets from shore and by boat in an unoiled retention pond. Field triage was performed on all three ducks before transport to the rehabilitation center. For more information on LDWF’s oil response operation, contact Carver at lcarver@wlf.la.gov . By the time this edition is four days old, LSU fans will know whether their football team is the real deal or yet another edition of a team that can’t get a win over the Alabama Crimson Tide. Much of the differences between the two teams are psychological; ‘Bama attitudes and venues can do that to any team (except maybe Clemson). But this version of the Tigers seems to have overcome the whistling past the graveyard persona of previous Tigers. Yes, ‘Bama is like watching a humorless, well-oiled cyborg platoon run their latest scheme on your badly outclassed group of lesser-starred weaklings. It’s a mind game which Nick Saban neither invented or fosters; he’s too busy being a curmudgeon and tightly-wound emotionalist to bother with the Jumbotron “Bams!” and “Pows!” of a pre-game Bryant-Denny Stadium warmup. Forget the excuses of uber home town referees for the Tide. To turn the Tide, you have to outthink, outmuscle and out-execute them. Talent levels are roughly equal except Alabama has had a pipeline to what do become All American defensive linemen only matched by Clemson in the past five years. I like Saban. He took LSU football off life support and his commercials are fun to watch, except for that latest Aflac insurance ad, which makes Saban look like a greasy car salesman with his bling rings and smarmy “We try!” comment at the end. But Saban can be beat by a confident team and this LSU squad has the confidence and the blindness to history that could put them over the top by more than a few points. Whether or not Tua Tagovailoa starts at quarterback, the Tigers can’t afford to care. This is a complete Alabama team, less talented on defense than recent versions. But the war is an air war, with the leading Heisman candidates vying for the title on Saturday afternoon. Tua and Joe Burrow - Asian spice verses Mid-America apple pie. Who’da thunk this a few years ago? The best sets of receivers, the best two quarterbacks in the country (sorry Jalen Hurts and Justin Fields and Justin Herbert) and two solid offensive lines will battle in front of the largest sports t.v. audience of the year. The difference may be in the pass rush of the Tide, but there are no superstars manning the flanks for them or the Tigers. LSU’s secondary is better than Alabama’s and they better play like it. LSU has removed the gap between the teams at linebacker and with injuries to ‘Bama backers, such as Louisiana’s Dylan Moses, the Tide is not as strong as the Tigers this year. Maybe we can stop the bleeding of Louisiana talent to Tuscaloosa. The 2020 college recruiting classes already show that the Tigers have caught the Sabans for raw talent and scored a couple of recruiting coups that should inflame the famous Saban chagrin. just in case, officials in Tuscaloosa have advised retailers there to overstock facial tissues (for crying, another area where Alabama leads the SEC) and triage units to prepare for sprained or broken limbs and other body parts as the Tide Faithful bawl their way into Thanksgiving and try to end it all by jumping off of the roofs of their doublewides. Losing is a rare event in north Alabama but when it comes, its like Armageddon. it’s LSU’s task this year to make sure ‘Bama sees the Biblical and doesn’t travel to a semi-final championship venue this season. And if they do, brother, make sure the Tigers have the attitude that “Oh…one ass-kicking wasn’t enough? You want another?” instead of fearing the stupidity of The Mad Hatter’s inability to figure out much of anything, post-season or the moronic so-called leadership of former AD Joe Alleva, now safely ensconced in a dead-end LSU sports position. By Paula Johnson

A SAD, HUMORLESS, UNFOCUSED MAN The race for Louisiana Governor will be decided this month as incumbent John Bel Edwards and Baton Rouge businessman Eddie Rispone face off. The race is too close for most pundits to call, but there are some very important differences between the two men. Governor Edwards is part of a prominent Tangipahoa family that has served in various aspects over more than one generation. Edwards has been accused of being anti-Trump and pro Nancy Pelosi in efforts to label a rather moderate man a liberal who is no good for the state. Edwards has taken time to work with President Trump, one of the few national Democrats to do so. The President’s attack on Edwards in recent days has been a political ploy only. I seriously doubt Trump wants a political rookie with little or no ability to articulate his own platform in the governor’s chair unless Trump just wants a puppet in the state capital. Rispone is a partner in an electrical service supply company doing business in heavy industrial projects. We’re not sure what role Rispone played in the growth of this company compared to his partner, but the man had an extra 11 million dollars to spend on trying to get the state’s top job. That’s a safer bet than the mattress king who blew 11 million on the Astros during the World Series. But Rispone has shown little of the skill sets it takes to run this state. In fact, his personality style runs similar to a combination of Richard Nixon, Calvin Coolidge and a little Woodrow Wilson thrown in for flavor. Rispone doesn’t inspire confidence or trust from the average Louisianan; if it weren’t for President Trump’s coattails, Rispone would be dragging along the floor behind the fact that he has no plans to discuss and little stomach for taking on Edwards in a debate. Take away Rispone’s political consultant-generated talking points and slogans and little substance comes out of the mouth of the Baton Rouge resident. His attack on Edwards West Point background by awkwardly trying to connect trial lawyers to the academy’s reputation smacks of the unsophisticated approach this candidate has taken. His attacks on State Representative Ralph Abraham are another example. Reports of strong dissatisfaction among supporters of Abraham regarding Rispone’s approach on combatting their candidate could definitely affect the race later this month. Rispone does not inspire confidence, commonality with the average voter or the ability to inject humor, empathy, understanding or knowledge into his candidacy. He appears to be dour and unhappy. Edwards’ emotions did get the better of the governor during a very boring debate venue, but Rispone has a way of rankling those who would like to see a gubernatorial candidate show some spice and substance, not appear as a poster boy for the color beige. The man appears ill-prepared to do the job and I can’t blame the governor for being chagrined over a candidate who wants to buy the governorship and then try to figure it out later. Trump had negotiation abilities and an outward personality before he ran for President; Rispone looks like a latter-day Eddie Chiles, but with much less money than the late Texas oilman, who knew what he wanted to say and do and did it. Rispone can’t or won’t do the same and seems to have a mystery agenda. It would be refreshing if this man would serve up something substantial for voters to munch on. Instead, he’s serving up empty calories while he and his handlers try to figure out what he could possibly accomplish if he wins the office November 16th. -0-

Hi, Everyone!

email me! PaulaJ3036@gmail.com

There was a lot going on this past weekend. Sure hope you enjoyed your weekend as much as I did. Of course there was Halloween, one of my favorite Holidays. But, I am very sad to say I didn’t get a lot of Trick or Treaters. When I moved to my new home last October, I thought I would have more children this year. I like handing out candy that the grand kids and I like (M & M’s, Snickers, Twix, Milky Way, Kit Kat). That way if there is any left, we won’t let it go waste. Looks like we will eating candy for awhile. Oh Well! On All Saints day, Carlea’s High School had Grandparents Day. As soon as we arrived we were asked to take pictures with our granddaughters. We had mass, were given magnets for our vehicles and could either have refreshments in the cafeteria or take them out for brunch. It was a very nice morning and I would like to thank everyone at Academy of Our Lady for making us feel so special. This is Carlea’s first year there and I am so looking forward to the wonderful things she will experience there in the coming years. We spent Sat. afternoon along with the Eaglettes, ABSHS Band and Cheerleader at City Park cheering for those Eagles. Today is Sun., Church and the rest of the day I will be relaxing. I was only able to take a photo of one of the bouquets I made for All Saints Day. Unfortunately, I ran out of space on my phone So I am sharing with you what I have. I made this one quite simple. I used 3 football mums, 3 stems of cushion mums, leather leaf fern, and some branch sprays from a bush I have growing in the front yard. I really like those tiny yellow flowers.I am going to trim the bush back anyway, so I figured why not make use of some of the branches. I think it’s cute and I really like the way it drapes down. Well, that;s it for this time. So what will your next project be? Mine.....I don’t know. But, I know it will be lots of fun.Sincerely, Paula Johnson

As the end of the year approaches, some landscape plants are only just getting started. Ornamental grasses offer the gardener an endless list of qualities without many side effects. Traits like drought tolerance, disease resistance, insect resistance, and adaptability to several different soil types make ornamental grasses easy to grow for all gardeners. Grasses also add texture, contrast, color, and year-around interest. Even as grasses go dormant during winter months, they still provide interest and excitement to the winter garden.

Observe the inflorescence (or flower) of a grass plant. Grasses don’t have a need to attract insect pollinators and therefore don’t display beautifully colored petals in varying arrangements. The flowers of grass plants are very plain. Grasses utilize the wind to spread genetic material. This is why we recommend planting corn plants in a black pattern rather than in a long single file row. There is a higher probability of more complete pollination (and subsequent fertilization) when wind pollinated plants are grouped closer together. The flowers of grass plants aren’t just for seed production. In the landscape, the flowers of ornamental grass provide a pleasing landscape quality during late summer and fall. Even after the color fades, the flower structures provide texture through late winter and early spring. Coupled with an exhausting list of desirable traits, ornamental grasses are some of the most versatile option for use in the southern landscape. Grasses come in many different sizes and can perform different uses. Smaller growing gasses work well when used as borders or ground cover plantings. Look at Pennisetum alopecuroides ‘Hamelin’ for a low growing groundcover grass that can be mass planted to cover the most amount of ground. While not exactly a grass, Liriope muscari, shares some of the same qualities. They are commonly used to outline and define flowerbeds by planting in a border or line. Medium size grasses help to create vertical lines in the garden. Some examples of medium sized grasses include Nassella tenuissima, Mexican feather grass, or purple fountain grass, Pennisetum setaceum rubrum. P. setaceum rebrum ‘Fireworks’ is a LSU AgCenter Super Plant known for its purple, pink, and red color scheme. Pink muhlygrass, Muhlenbergia capillaris, is catching on with a lot of landscape designers. The foliage of this clumping grass will get about 2ft tall and the entire plant will average 3ft by 3ft when in flower. Plants like Louisiana iris (Iris brevicaulis, I. fulva, I. giganticaerulea, I. nelsonii, and I. hexagona) and variegated flax lily (Dianella tasmanica ‘Variegata’ ) offer the similar design qualities of medium sized grasses but provide diversity in a mixed landscape planting. Taller growing grasses work best when used in the back of a flowerbed. Some examples include Miscanthus sinensis, maiden grass, and Cortaderia selloana, pampas grass.

PLAQUEMINES FISHING REPORTS

CAPT HOOP -- OUR FREEDOM Our Freedom Charters • 504-247-8459

Capt. Hoop/ Our Freedom / Life is Good! ARCHIVED STORY FROM 11-8-18

Red fishing has been hot. Started out with a double when I had a father and son. The bulls were there and gave us all the action we wanted. The stud of the day came just as we were leaving. As hard as this 47 inch fat monster was to get out of the net. The story was better. Then the fun began. Some of them had extra spots and outstanding color. Love the orange/golden color with a blue. Great ending to a good day.

When this fish hit ie went across the sand bar and headed out to sea. I tried my best to turn it or stop it but the fish and current was too much. I was in fear of breakinh the 40 pound test line. I was being spooled but could not cross the sand bar. I had to go out and around to a cut if I had enough line to do that. I made it through the cut and started getting some line back. Now the fish wanted to go back over the sandbar but we were able to keep it on our side of the bar. We got in all but 70 feet and i noticed a 3 to 4 inch fray in the line. Just get that on the spool. Every time we got it the fish would pull drag and we would be working with the bad line again. While this was going on a shrimper with drag nets was coming at us. The fish headed towards the nets but through the skill of the fisherman and my boat motor we were just able to avoid that problem. I think the shrimp captain saw us at the last minute and made a slight turn. The head and girth of this monster was as impressive as the fight. Redfishing is on fire at this time.

The next day we also started with a double. The big boy went back and they only wanted a few for dinner so we invited the little guy to dinner.
