GREAT WILL HUNTING No, we’re not referring to the debut film of Ben Affleck and Matt Damon years ago. We’re referring to the dawning of the one intangible LSU has needed to slay the dragon known as “ROLLTIDE”. ROLLTIDE is a mythical creature that lives in the minds of millions of Alabamians and others. It’s magical powers have produced dozens if not hundreds of wins over the past century for the great university in northern Alabama. Sometimes it’s summoned with the expletive “ROLLDAMNTIDE!” and it is a scary and powerful thing to behold. It makes grown men buy leather lettermen jackets with all sorts of patches touting national football championships. When it doesn’t appear, it makes many of those same men cry unabashedly, curse the darkness and sometimes do some really stupid things to drunk students and helpless trees. That intangible is WILL. As in the POWER of WILL. Around for centuries, it’s been touted as a great leveler of circumstances and events, inspiring the ordinary into extraordinary and extraordinary into legendary. All that and more took place in this Tuscaloosa hamlet November 9th. It had happened once before, eight years to be exact. But it took a different tack then, exaltation without confidence, joy without contentment. This year, those elements were created as the battle of the two greatest college quarterbacks of 2019 fought toe-to-toe along with the best sets of four receivers for each of two great football teams the sport has ever seen. Oh, there were others who joined the fray, most of whom had much to do with the outcome. But Tua and Joe and the eight receivers who should all see Sunday playing time in the 2020’s were the catalysts. In the end, it was the WILL of Joe Burrow, Clyde Edwards Helaire and dozens of confident teammates that literally turned the TIDE into a wave crashing on the ROCKS of LSU resolve, a new physical feature not present for many years. The TIDE did its damnedest to wash away this new feature, because that’s how they ROLL. However, this LSU Tiger team put up enough roadblocks to disrupt the ROLL, making this meeting of ROCK and ROLL a win for the ROCK. And we’re not referring to Dwayne Johnson. It took a man whose resume’ reads like a movie script and whose voice reminds us of what sandpaper would sound like if it were animated. Ed Orgeron had been battling his demons for years, slaying them one by one until the final one blocked his road the past two years. On November 9th, in the early darkness of mid-autumn, this Cajun bundle of energy and resolve defeated his last foe. And it took the form of WILL, as in “there’s a way”, The WILL Nick Saban uses as his bedrock for “The Process”, a catechism of beliefs and disciplines he uses to bring his charges to victory after victory. Not that it still wasn’t on the sideline at Bryant Denny Stadium next to coach Saban. But its brother had shuffled over to the visitor’s side to stand next to coach Orgeron. You see, Orgeron had WILL’s family members visiting LSU football players for the past two years and this year, the WILL family decided to stay awhile. Like for several years…or more. There is no joy in the Mudville known as Tuscaloosa today. Oh, it’s inhabitants are gracious and sometimes condescending in their handling of this rare feat of loss. But they know this time that the elements of The Process have been compromised, leaking out, so to speak, to those in Baton Rouge and beyond. The talented four and 5 stars, who only chose Bama for the wins and The Process, now have an equal choice in their future. And since it couldn’t have looked any brighter for the Alabama Crimson Tide, it must be looking better for the LSU Fighting Tigers. More high school football talent per capita resides in Louisiana than in any other state and the thin margin of conviction to attend school two states to the east has been all but erased. As Eddie Murphy stated, “there’s a new sheriff in town” and although the old sheriff still has his office and his guns, age, ennui and the Awakening on the Bayou means a whole new deck in the SEC. This ain’t your Daddy’s LSU football team (and, thankfully, not Les Miles’ either). It belongs to the ultimate Underdog, who has convinced this writer and hundreds of thousands more that it’s not always the pretty and the articulate who prevail but the grinder and believer, the warrior who wears his feelings and his philosophy on his shirt and can stop and smell the roses of victory when necessary. The Age of Nick is not over, but in the words of Sir Winston Churchill, “it is not the end or the beginning of the end but the end of the beginning”. And the new beginning promises truckloads of Kleenex for Bama fans going forward as this battle of titans becomes equal and where WILL sits on both sides of the field. -0-

By Paula Johnson

Hi, Everyone!

email me! PaulaJ3036@gmail.com

The cooler are here, it is finally starting to feel like the holidays are approaching. Homecoming and Fall dances are happening. And that is what my project is about. My granddaughter decided to go to her school’s Homecoming Dance and told the young man she was going with that her grandma would make their flowers. She and her Mom decided on the flowers and her Mom went to the supply house for me to get want was needed. Considering it had been a long time since I worked with wristlet bracelets and magnetic boutineer holders, it all stayed together nicely. Her wristlet is made of black mini calla and dark red roses. I made her date’s boutineer with the dark red roses. It was really fun making the flowers for my granddaughter’s Homecoming Dance. And knowing she loved them that it much nicer. So what have you been working on and what will your next craft project be? Mine.........I don’t know. But I know it will be lots of fun..Sincerely, Paula Johnson

GROWING BULBS INDOORS Amaryllis and paperwhite bulbs are plants traditionally given as gifts during the holiday season between Thanksgiving and Christmas. So, if not already, you will start seeing them for sale at various retail shopping stores around the area. These particular flowers have found their niche into the American lifestyle because of the fact that they naturally bloom near the end of the year. The botanical definition of “bulb” itself helps as well. The term bulb is used to describe a particular modification of a plant stem. There are several stem modifications seen in plants. Stems do not always grow upright and vertical. Stems can grow sideways, above the ground, or below the ground. Stems can be of a regular size or they can be enlarged. Stems can also be short or long. And, that’s where bulbs fit into the conversation. A bulb is a shortened, or compressed, version of a plant stem. The bulb itself can be dissected and detailed to show the construct of an entire plant. The basal plate is near the bottom of the bulb and is where roots grow. Fleshy leaf scales appear to resemble plant leaves but they merely store energy rather than create it (photosynthesis). The tunic layer or covering provides the bulb with physical protection. As you peel back the layers, you will eventually find the start of a flowering bud. The whole collection includes everything needed to start a new plant! Will Afton

Growing a plant from a bulb is about as easy as getting up in the morning but some people will need a pep talk to help get over the hump of getting started. If you have received a bulb plant as a gift and would like to pot it up, start locating a few materials. You will need a container that is somewhat proportional to the size of bulb you received. Most of the pots used with container gardening will work, but you might want to find a pot without irrigation holes. Glass vases are popular containers to grow bulbs. Use a filler material like rocks or pebbles to support the bulbs in the container. Pea gravel offers rounded edges and earth-like colors to provide a very natural looking product. Crushed limestone provides a clean look and interesting texture. Find something you like and go with it. We only need something to hold the bulb in place. Obviously, you will need access to water at some point and you might want to put on proper PPE for this activity, like closed toe shoes, long pants, long sleeves, and gloves.

Fill the container with rocks or pebbles and arrangement the desired appearance by hand. Place bulbs into substrate with the root side down and the growing tips pointed towards the sky. Add more in a concentric circle as desired. Space them as you like. You can leave them separate and loose or you can arrange them to be touching. You can always add more gravel if necessary. Once the bulbs are arranged in the gravel to your liking, it is time to add water. Fill the container with clean water to start the growing process. Bring the water level all the way up to the bottom of each bulb. Check the water level daily from here on out. Keeping the bulbs covered with water will encourage decomposition. Add enough water to maintain the water level near the base of the bulbs and you’ll be well on your way to success. Its that easy!

CAPT HOOP -- OUR FREEDOM Our Freedom Charters • 504-247-8459

Capt. Hoop/ Our Freedom / Life is Good!

ARCHIVED STORY FROM 11-22-18 Hunting season is here. Unfortunately we lost a life before it even started. The river is unforgiving. It is very dangerous on a calm day let alone on a windy day. The duck boats are light and have very little freeboard. A ships wake can hit you unexpected during daylight hours. In the dark you are at the mercy of the Mississippi river. The current, boat traffic, and winds all cause waves of various sizes and in opposing directions at times. There are also many things floating down the river that you can hit both above the water and just below the surface. Running in the dark is VERY DANGEROUS!

This time of the year we also have fog. In the fog you can loose all sense of direction in an instant. Your visibility can drop to a few feet at once. Fog is not the same all around as shown on TV. Many pockets of fog are extremely thick and you are instantly lost. The radar on other ships and boats will mistake a small duck boat as the river bank or a channel marker until it is too late. As cautious as we are accidents happen. These last few weeks we had way too many. The results were tragic. Your clothing this time of the year is bulky. Many do not run with a life jacket. We all do this at times but your loved ones at least want closure. It is too late to put a life jacket on when you are in the water. Please use extra caution, think before you act, and stay safe. The redfishing is on fire and with the cold weather the trout are starting to show. I have been just targeting redfish so far. My niece came in with John from Dirty South Daiquiri and their significant others. The weather was beautiful for a change.

The redfish were very cooperative. Trina did her thing. This girl can fish and loves doing it.

At one time I did not have time to put them on ice. It was an epic fishing trip.

Rick found a good black drum. This guy put up a great fight. It was not long before we were limited out. These fish were all good slot fish. We were going to have some great eating very soon. We even did some catch and release before calling it a day.

We came in at a reasonable time and had some eats while the fish were cleaned. They had to get back to Denham Springs for some evening activities. It qas a good family day. Life is Good! It was a good family day!
