Two Gretna Men Arrested for Oyster Violations Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries enforcement agents arrested two men for alleged oyster harvesting violations in Lafourche Parish on Oct. 18. Agents arrested Frank Fernandez, 28, and Wilian Reyes, 19, both of Gretna, for taking oysters from a polluted area. Fernandez was also cited for violation of the sanitation code, improper boat numbers and failing to comply with the boating safety education requirement. MaryJane Brown, Aubree Kelly, Angelia Wokeme, Bailey Bumblis, and Leila Domingue are working together to make their “kindness” feathers to fill someone else pillowcase with kindness.

Agents received information about illegal oyster harvesting in a polluted area in Lafourche Parish. Agents were on patrol near Bayou Faleau and observed a vessel with two subjects on board actively harvesting oysters from an area that was deemed polluted by the Louisiana Department of Health. Agents made contact with the two men on board the vessel identified as Fernandez and Reyes. Agents seized 19 sacks of oysters and returned them to the water. The men were booked into the Lafourche Parish Jail. Taking oysters from a polluted area brings a $900 to $950 fine and up to 120 days in jail. Improper boat numbers and failing to comply with the boating education requirement each brings up to a $50 fine and 15 days in jail for each offense. Violating the sanitation code brings up to a $25 fine and 10 days in jail.

Any person convicted of these violations may for one year after the date of such conviction only harvest oysters from a vessel that employs a vessel monitoring system. Access to the monitoring system shall be granted to LDWF.

I still owe Howard and his lady dinner from the last time the Niners and the Saints played a couple of years ago. Howard never claimed his dinner. Perhaps we can even it up in December. These guys are for real. While the city of San Francisco slowly sinks into the cesspool of socialism, permissivism and general anarchic craziness, the team down the road in Santa Clara has experienced a rebirth under John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan. Taking a page from the Bill Walsh days, the Niners have added vital experience with Richard Sherman, the former defensive voice and poster boy of the obnoxious Pete Carroll-led Seattle Seahawks and others who have mentored and melded with the best two-year draft since the early 80’s. No, there is no Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, Terrell Owens, Steve Young, John Taylor, Dwight Clark or Ronnie Lott on this team but their execution on both sides of the ball, considering the talent level assigned their players, is the best in the league. Nobody knew Alvin Kamara two years ago and I can guarantee you no one knew Matt Breida before the Cleveland Browns game. These Niners are not your Dad’s (or mine) old, scary, Hall of Fame juggernauts, but they are, by definition, more efficient in what they are doing. The NFL Power Rankings have them second to the New England Patriots. That may be premature, as the Saints, Chiefs, Seahawks and Ravens are more proven. But the Niners play all but the Chiefs and beat Kansas City in the preseason at K.C. If they can stay healthy, this is a team that can tear through the league, including the Rams, Green Bay and yes, the Patriots as well. Time will tell. -0-

I think Fall is finally arriving. Here it is, 5 a.m. and my phone is telling me it’s 76 degrees. October is almost over. Where are the 60 degree temperatures? I am so ready to wear a sweater and feel the cooler temperatures. The stores have all 3 holidays displayed together. I just want to get through Halloween before I start thinking about Thanksgiving and Christmas. I decided this time to make a completely neutral project I had been wanting to do some stenciling so I decided this was the time. Hobby Lobby had these cute signs on sale and I decided to get one, along with a stencil and a couple bottles of paint. I am not completely finished with this yet (had to watch the Saints game). But, decided to show you what I have. I prepped the wood like I normally do and painted the darker area with Cranberry Wine and the lighter area with Light Buttermilk. After it dried I placed my stencil where I wanted it and used Oyster Beige to the paint the lettering. I than speckled the piece with Light Buttermilk. And you know how impatient I am., I used the blow dryer between each coat. I think it looks okay, so far. Can’t wait to get it finished. Well, that’s it for this time. Words to GREAUX by SASANQUAS OFFER COLOR DURING THE FALL SEASON Most people, when they think of camellias, imagine the large rose-like blooms of the old garden, camellias (Camellia japonica) that dominate the landscape during late winter and early spring. However, several other species of camellia are grown in landscapes across the region. A common species grown in Louisiana is the sasanqua (C. sansanqua). They are evergreen flowering shrubs that range in heights and have different growing habits. Typically, they are smaller growing plants than C. japonica. They produce smaller leaves, giving them a finer texture Will Afton in the landscape. Like old garden camellias, sasanquas prefer a partial shade location but they differ in that they can tolerant full sun. They prefer a well-drained acidic soil somewhere between a pH of 5.5 and 6.5 similar to other well-known southern shrubs like azaleas and gardenias. Sasanquas have few pest problems that are easy to control if identified early and appropriate control measures are taken. As with most evergreen plants, scale insects are a common problem. These insects have sucking type mouthparts and can be found feeding on the undersides of leaves. Most gardeners notice black sooty mold growing on the topsides of leaves. This is because the scale insects secrete “honey dew” as they feed and it drips onto the leave leaves below. The black sooty mold then grows on these honey dew covered surfaces. Obtain control by using a systemic insecticide in combination with a few applications of horticultural oil to keep your camellia free and clear of these problems. Root rot, caused by a water mold pathogen, phytopthera, can also be problemat at times, especially in areas with poor drainage and water logged soil conditions. The best way to prevent this problem is to choose a well-drained location for your new planting and to avoid excessive irrigation. Mix in organic material like peat moss or compost with heavier soils with a high clay content. In low areas with no surface contour, it is advisable to build raised planting beds by using a garden soil product. Garden soils are made up of a mixture of organic mulches and provide excellent drainage. Because of their popularity and stamina in Louisiana landscapes, you will find many different sasanqua cultivars for sale at garden centers and plant nurseries. Some of the tallest growing cultivars can reach heights near fifteen tall. The cultivar ‘Alabama Beauty’ is one of the earliest bloomers and has beautiful rosey-red flowers. ‘Pink Snow’ is another larger growing cultivar but it produces lovely soft pink flowers. ‘Leslie Ann’ has been promoted as a Louisiana Super Plant due to its outstanding performance and it produces a flower with white petals and pink edges. ‘Setsugekka’ is another taller growing cultivar but it produces a pure flower. For those looking for a smaller growing option look at ‘Stephanie Golden’. It produces a hot pink flower and stays around five to six feet tall to satisfy those smaller spaces. These are not the only choices you will see. Check out your local garden center to see what is available in your area.

What a way to start. I lost count of the doubles around 7 and quit even trying to count them. We were getting fish on every cast. This went on for 3.5 to 4 hours. I had one captain call me and I told him to come right up to me and start fishing. The fish were thick in size and numbers.

The second day was slower but we were able to get over 30 of them. The size was all about the same. Nothing under 37 inches.
October is starting out with a bang. The big boys are still in and getting fat. We are getting many in the mid 40’s. These hogs are fighters and will carry you around the boat a few times. When you think it is tired it sees the boat and pulls out another 50 yards. At times the only one getting tired is the fisherman.
Even though August and September are the prime bull time for these extreme fighters this year is still holding them in October the fight and fun is a lasting memory.
Doubles are not uncommon. It can get hectic when the fish are crossing and circling especialy if the customer is not quick or experienced.
Life is Good.
The power of these monsters on light tackle is an experience you will never forget. We encourage catch and release because these are the big breeders and the meat is not as good as the smaller ones. I ran this trip for Champion Charters. I had these people for 2 days. They wanted just bulls. I told them the bulls were spotty the last few days. The first cast went out and came back. I was not expecting what lay ahead for the rest of the day.
