Words to GREAUX by BARK LICE OR TREE CATTLE One of the things you learn while working as an Extension Agent is that most of the landscape issues we encounter happen every year. Whether it be a disease problem, an insect problem, or even a plant availability problem, everything seems to have its time on the calendar. One of those Will Afton issues that happens every summer is the appearance of webbing that covers trees trunks and limbs. Sometimes it’s only a small section and other times it may be the entire branch. Whatever the case, it is quite odd and can cause concern to the novice caretaker. To make a long story short, there is no need to worry about this particular insect. We consider them beneficial in the grand scheme of things. These little creatures spend their entire life on the trunks of trees and shrubs. Most of the time they go unnoticed. That is until they produce a white, grey webbing that covers the bark. We refer to these insects as bark lice or tree cattle. Bark lice are insects in the order Psocoptera and commonly referred to as psocids. They get the nickname because of their small size, like how some people call aphids plant lice. Others call them tree cattle because of the way they move together. If you look underneath the webbing, you can see small brown insects traveling up and down the bark of your tree. Bark lice nymphs appear dark gray with pale yellow bands between abdominal segments. The adults have shiny black wings that are held like a tent over their abdomens. The webbing itself does not cause any damage but merely provides protection from birds and other predators. Bark lice do not harm the tree. They will feed on dead bark cells, fungi, algae and other debris growing on the tree trunk. In other words, they clean the trunks of trees. This in turn makes them a beneficial insect in the landscape. Because of this beneficial nature, I do not recommend doing anything about it. Sometimes the webbing may be unsightly. If this is the case, then I would suggest using high water pressure to physically remove the webbing from the trunk. You could let them remain. In a couple of months, it will blend in well with the festivities of Halloween. Add a spooky feel to your landscape this year by leaving bark lice alone and they will help decorate your yard with cobwebs and silk! -0-

The most important part of the series is the family dinner. In an era where few people sit down and eat together on a regular basis and with a certain decorum, the Reagan family of New York continues a multi-generational tradition, with four active generations sharing the table. Issues are discussed rather freely and voices of all family members are allowed access to any discussion. What really separates the show, however, is the firm but loving discipline shown between all family members. Language is civil and never coarse; temperament kept to a minimum of extremes and understanding of each other’s positions valued and recognized. Above all, sense of family, values, fair play and love rule the day.

Louisiana Department of Wildlife & Fisheries Chad Hebert Selected to Lead LDWF Enforcement Division July 13, 2020 – Lt. Col. Chad Hebert, a 27-year veteran at the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF), will lead its Enforcement Division, LDWF Secretary Jack Montoucet announced Monday (July 13). Hebert, 48, promoted to the rank of Colonel, replaces Col. Sammy Martin, who announced his retirement this month. Hebert takes over immediately. He will oversee a staff of 257, including enforcement agents and supporting staff. Hebert, from Schriever, has earned numerous awards during his LDWF career. He has twice been honored with the LDWF Meritorious Service Award (2006, 2017), named Statewide LDWF Agent of the Year (2001), Region 9 Agent of the Year (2001) and Outstanding Officer (2001). “Chad Hebert has the experience and skills that make him an excellent choice as our enforcement division’s top leader,’’ Montoucet said. “I have full confidence that Col. Hebert will continue the outstanding work of our Enforcement office. His wide experience should make for a smooth transition.” “I join this entire agency in wishing Col. Martin well in his retirement. He has served us and the citizens of this state with honor and dignity,” Montoucet said. Responding to his promotion, Hebert said, “I thank Sec. Montoucet for the confidence he has in me to lead our Enforcement Division. I am excited and thankful to direct our work to protect our wildlife and fishery resources and the people of Louisiana with the professionalism and dedication that our citizens expect.” Named Lt. Colonel in 2018, Hebert helped direct statewide operations and patrols as well as the administrative functions of the Enforcement Division. He also worked with other federal and state enforcement agencies, including the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Drug Enforcement Agency, Homeland Security, the Louisiana State Police and state attorney generals and judges. He served as major from February of 2017 until his promotion and represented the LDWF Enforcement Division on the Crab Task Force, Oyster Task Force, Shrimp Task Force and Finfish Task force.
It’s an America we have been losing for years, yet is longed for by most of us. It is an America that we need, as a lack of civility and unfairness has permeated our society to the point that many of us are not sure what has happened to the common sense of our alleged leadership over issues that should not be controversial or divisive. Much of this uncertainty will dissipate after the first Tuesday of November, whatever result takes place. But too much will remain and our national soul appears to be in danger. When folks don’t have discourse, the result is chaos. The dissolution of our family unit has been rather rapid and is being replaced with an artificial mix that does not necessarily give people a representative appearance of their true selves. Families unable to cope at all have become disfunctional, destructive and unloving. Others take on the patina of a social unit rather than a family council. Meanwhile, much backbone and sense of value has eroded as families come to terms with a rapidly changing American landscape. The second show, Yellowstone, is a culmination of the career of Kevin Costner. Costner plays the no-nonsense patriarch of a seven-generation Montana ranching family, the Duttons. Unlike the Reagans, language is rough and family loyalty severely questioned and dealt with as this last-of a-generation household fights corporate greed and regional subplots to hold on to their acreage and more important, their way of life. Methods and politics are a combination of Old School, the Wild West and a sense of Mafia tradition. But faults….some very glaring….are either glossed over, confronted head-on or treated with love. It’s an unsettling scenario for those either weak of value, mind or body but it does deal in its positive moments with the disgust of the modern, soulless world of high finance and low moral and political character. No laugh track here, little tolerance for silliness or stupidity. As Americans, viewers finds themselves rooting for the Duttons, even with all their warts, as progressivism and political intrigue force their hands into what may be one of the most emotionally entertaining conclusions ever viewed on national television. Both shows get one’s blood pumping for those who believe in the positive values our country was founded upon. We may disagree on dozens of issues and the best way to make changes to adjust those issues to better reflect our values, but without recognition of those primal values, we don’t really have a country anyway. And every system, every society, every “ism” has a set of primal values. America has been able to make the most of the better values offered by newcomers over the years; that’s why the United States is still the go-to place for more people than any two or three other countries combined. if not, we wouldn’t need a set of borders and entrance requirements so we may vet those seeking our opportunity who promise to bring positives to the American spirit, not destruction, negatives or intimidation. Remember that next time you travel outside of the United States. -0-

He received numerous awards during his career including LDWF’s Outstanding Agent of the Year in 1992, three Meritorious Service Awards and the Chief’s Award in 2014.
Three Men Cited for Recreational Red Snapper Violations in Plaquemines Parish Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries enforcement agents cited three subjects for alleged red snapper violations on July 10 in Plaquemines Parish. Agents cited Aragon Moreno, 45, Mauricio Perez-Cruz, 51, and Arnold Miranda, 44, all from Kenner, for taking or possessing over the limit of red snapper, taking or possessing undersized red snapper and failing to have recreational offshore landing permits.

So...are you totally waterlogged from all the rain? The grass at our house was horribly high. The yard was so mushy we couldn’t even mow the grass for ahile. My grandson finally got it cut after he got off work Friday. I normally love the sound of the rain tapping on the windows and drops falling gently on my face, the fresh clean smell after the rain. But, come on. Soggy backyards are just not my cup of tea. So, here I go, digging out Fall patterns and wood pieces. Thinking cool, chilly breezes to beat the heat. With that being said, it is time for me to tell you about my newest project.

Yes, this was designed by Renee Mullins and painted by me! He is the cutest little Fall Gnome and would look adorable wherever you placed him in your home. There is a place for you to put a battery tea light candle so it shows through the hole in the middle. I used Deco Art Americana paints for this little gem. The wood is 1/8” birch. Of course, I sealed and sanded the wood before I painted it. Wouldn’t this be adorable as a napkin holder with a Gnome on both sides or what about painting this design on a birdhouse. In the meantime Evan was doing his thing finding everything but a redfish. At one time he sat down to eat a sandwich. I casted to the area he was fishing and hooked up. Next thing I know he is fishing next to me. 2 more bites left on the first half of his sandwich and the other half on the seat. No eating when the fish are biting.

After the beatdown the day before Mr AJ had something to proove. He was not ready to have another day letting his grandson Evan harass him or show him up again. I moved into an area that was protected from the wind. The waters looked good with a little bait. Once again we were not finding much action. I ran the entire bay with nothing at all looking worth staying. Nobody on the radio was finding anything.
Our box is looking good but Evan can’t find a redfish. He is catching but not what he wanted. The grand parants are putting it to him on the redfish catching.
I hit a spot that was screaming fish but once again nothing. I made a decision to go across the river. When I started the motor a little bait got scared. I lifted the power poles and drifted about 25 yards. When I shifted into gear the water came alive with bait. I shut off the motor and dropped the power poles. I said “Lets give this a few more minutes”. Little did I know what the day had in store for us. Once again Evan shows off his fishing skills landing a nice trout. We are on the board.
He thought the big black drum was a redfish. Although a fantastic fight it was not the desired redfish. In the meantime Grandma was putting on a clinic on how to catch redfish.
With us about the only ones catching one of the boats that wascclearcacross the bay was easing towards us. It was a couple of captains out scouting. They were getting nothing but kept watching us having a field day. I told them to slip.in behind me and fish just above where I was. They did so and soon found our frustration. the bigger fish were going back into the canes and breaking off on the barnicles. One of the last fish of the day was a reprieve for Evan. This guy rounded off his day. We had to cut it short due to threatening storms.
This place has a ton of bait and has to be holding fish or the fish have to come by here to get a meal. Sure as clock work the dinner bell started ringing. Not to be pushed in a corner again this day AJ lands a beautiful redfish. Evan can not find a redfish. He is watching grandpa put a hurting on the reds but landing them was a bigger challenge because they were running into the canes and cutting the line on the barnicles. Evan had dialed in on the trout though. Evan kept wanting to get a redfish but the fish gods were not giving him the glory today. He was being punished for gloating the day before. The bite was slow but from the talk on the radio I was not going anywhere. It was enough to keep me interested. The water was moving through here nicely and we were putting a few in the box. Even Mrs Donna was finding some redfish. This was turning out to be a one stop shopping trip.
We were back in just before the rain hit. We had a respectable box of fish and a lot of action for a morning one stop trip.

After 2 days the hard non stop fishing took it’s toll. This was him at 2:00 in the afternoon. A job well done. Life is Good!

All non-business ads for merchandise are FREE if the items are priced this way:
If you are selling one item - it can’t be more than $300 If you are selling two items - each item can’t be more than $200 If you are selling three items - each item can’t be more than $150 All free ads must be completely written by the seller whether placed in person, by mail, fax or email and be legible to be printed. Persons placing multiple ads -or- consistently sending free ads will be barred from running ads in our paper. No more than 3 listed items will be accepted.
