LDWF Asking for Public’s Assistance in Reporting Sightings of the Eastern Spotted Skunk Eastern Spotted Skunk sightings. Oct. 2, 2019 – The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) is asking for the public’s help as it seeks to gather information on the eastern spotted skunk ( Spilogale putorius ). There has been no confirmed sighting of this species, once common in Louisiana, in more than 30 years. Anyone who sees the skunk is asked to report the sighting to LDWF. The sightings can be from roadkill, game cameras or inadvertent catch from fur trapping. “At one time, the eastern spotted skunk was much more abundant than it is now,” said LDWF biologist Jennifer Hogue-Manuel. “We’re hoping that the public can assist us by reporting any sightings of this species.’’ The eastern spotted skunk is about the size of a large eastern gray squirrel. It has an upside down triangle on its forehead and narrow white stripe beneath its eyes. Two stripes run diagonal across the hip with a few white spots on its rear end. Its tail is bushy, white underneath and at the tip. The striped skunk, easily identified in Louisiana because it is so common, has two white stripes down the back with a long, fluffy black tail. Louisiana Department of Wildlife & Fisheries LDWF Reminds Deer Hunters That Treestand Safety is an Important Part of the Hunt Building blocks of treestand safety. Oct. 2, 2019 - With deer season right around the corner and archery season already underway in some areas, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) wants to remind hunters that treestand safety is an essential component of safe hunting. Live to hunt another day and follow the “ABC’s” of treestand safety. Check out this brief video for more information. Want to learn even more about how to properly use a treestand for hunting? Louisiana Operation Game Thief, Inc. Issued Monetary Rewards at Meeting Louisiana Operation Game Thief, Inc. (LOGT), a Louisiana wildlife crime-stoppers program, awarded $3,950 to diligent citizens statewide at their quarterly meeting on Oct. 2 in Mansura. The LOGT board reviewed 12 cases that included public tips from informants. A total of 27 subjects were apprehended and a total of 62 offenses were written in regards to the reviewed cases. The cases reviewed and awarded money to the public for their assistance consisted of deer, migratory game bird, alligator, oyster and fishing cases. Anyone wishing to report wildlife or fisheries violations should anonymously call LDWF’s 24hour toll free Operation Game Thief hotline at 1-800-442-2511 or utilize LDWF’s tip411 program. To use the tip411 program, tipsters can text LADWF and their tip to 847411 or download the “LADWF Tips” iPhone and Android apps. LOGT was instituted in 1984 and provides cash rewards for information leading to the arrest of violators of fish and wildlife regulations. Funds are raised through private donations, court directed contributions and through contributions from cooperative endeavor agreements with organizations such as the National Wild Turkey Federation and Quality Deer Management Association. To make a donation to the LOGT that can be used for cash rewards, please contact Lt. Will Roberts at wroberts@wlf.la.gov.

The fall season is an important time in the life your lawn grass. As the days get shorter and temperatures get cooler, the lawn will start to prepare itself for the oncoming dormant season. Eventually, growth will slow down before it goes completely dormant. Adjust your routine to help ensure that the lawn stays healthy during this process. Let’s start with mowing. Keep mowing often enough to remove 1/3 of the grass plant each time. You also need to use a sharp mowing blade. It’s usually this time of year, late in the summer season, where I start Will Afton seeing torn grass blades. Sharp blades will cut the grass but dull blades will tear. You can easily see a general browning in the lawn when dull blades are used. This is due to the torn leaves turning necrotic due to excessive tissue damage. Be careful with fertilizers. Many companies will advertise “Winterizer” fertilizers this time of year but beware of adding any extra nitrogen after the first of September. Remember that nitrogen makes plants grow and lawns are naturally slowing down and preparing for dormancy. Fertilizing too late in the year with a high nitrogen fertilizer is counterproductive. Late nitrogen can spread lawn disease. Typical fall weather patterns are optimum for several lawn diseases including large patch (brown patch). In fact, you should be very observant in the fall so that lawn disease problems can be caught early. Large patch starts out as small dead areas that increase in size overnight especially during rainy periods or stretches of humid weather. Apply a fungicide that contain either of these active ingredients: azoxystrobin, propiconazole, myclobutanil. They are all labeled for use on turfgrass areas around the home. Some of the trade names you will see in stores include: BioAdvanced Fungus Control, Fertilome Liquid Systemic Fungicide II, Fertilome F-Stop, Green Light Fung-Away and Scott’s DiseaseX. Make sure to treat the entire yard to control the disease and prevent other areas from becoming infected. Lastly, think about weed control. Soon there will be a whole new crop of cool season weeds that grow during the fall and winter months. Prevent cool season annual weeds by applying a pre-emergent herbicide now. A popular favorite is Dimension (dithiopyr). It can be found at local feed stores and garden centers under the name Hi-Yield Weed and Grass Stopper II.

The bulls were there and gave us all the action we wanted. The stud of the day came just as we were leaving. As hard as this 47 inch fat monster was to get out of the net. The story was better. Then the fun began. Some of them had extra spots and outstanding color. Love the orange/golden color with a blue. Great ending to a good day.
The next day we also started with a double. The big boy went back and they only wanted a few for dinner so we invited the little guy to dinner.
When this fish hit ie went across the sand bar and headed out to sea. I tried my best to turn it or stop it but the fish and current was too much. I was in fear of breakinh the 40 pound test line. I was being spooled but could not cross the sand bar. I had to go out and around to a cut if I had enough line to do that. I made it through the cut and started getting some line back. Now the fish wanted to go back over the sandbar but we were able to keep it on our side of the bar. We got in all but 70 feet and i noticed a 3 to 4 inch fray in the line. Just get that on the spool. Every time we got it the fish would pull drag and we would be working with the bad line again. While this was going on a shrimper with drag nets was coming at us. The fish headed towards the nets but through the skill of the fisherman and my boat motor we were just able to avoid that problem. I think the shrimp captain saw us at the last minute and made a slight turn. We found a few for dinner.
The head and girth of this monster was as impressive as the fight. Redfishing is on fire at this time.
