WHERE THERE’S A WILL, THERE’S A WADE The LSU Tigers pulled off one of the most improbable basketball wins of all time in college hoops this past weekend when they rallied from 14 points down with 2:06 to play in the game and went on a 15 to 1 run to tie the game to force an overtime. The Tigers won, 86 to 80, being led by an overachieving roster of talented and tenacious players recruited by the best basketball coach maybe to ever reside in Baton Rouge. Th unfortunate victim was a medium to mediocre Missouri squad, missing their top three-point scorer. But they were at home and Missouri was used to playing in a tough collegiate basketball conference, including perennial powerhouse Kansas and top tier programs like Texas and Oklahoma.

The Tigers were given a less than one half of one percent chance of winning that game with the score and circumstances as they were. I was ready to turn the radio off at that point and take it to the house when something stopped me. I’m glad it did.

These Tigers don’t have the overall length of the great talented teams under Dale Brown. But, fortunately, they don’t have Dale Brown either. Brown could take NBA talent and his postseason performances were among the worst of any major college basketball coach. Brown was always New Orleans area school Belle Chasse Academy too busy developing a “freak” defense or bullying people with his superior knowledge and receives grant to implement national program Renaissance Man background. Brown’s most famous quote comes from former Indiana basketball Hall of Fame coach Bobby Knight, who, when asked about a Final Four game against NEW ORLEANS – Chef Emeril Lagasse and the Emeril Lagasse Foundation are proud to announce Brown’s Tigers and if he was worried about their talent, Knight said, “I was certainly worried Belle Chasse Academy as its second school site of the recently launched Emeril’s Culinary Garden about perhaps the most talented college basketball squad of that season, but then I looked down the sideline and saw Coach Brown with his team and I stopped worrying.” & Teaching Kitchen. They could wind up with the best backcourt in the SEC this year and currently are ranked in the Top 25, trailing only Number One Tennessee in the conference standings. They “My wife Alden and I are excited to welcome Belle Chasse Academy as the second school site have made mistakes, sure, but they have won two of their three overtime contests and have of the Emeril’s Culinary Garden & Teaching Kitchen program,” said Chef Emeril Lagasse. “This shown they have the confidence of depending on an eight-man rotation for their success. program provides the resources, tools and knowledge to succeed in and beyond the classroom, and we are thrilled to bring it to New Orleans, the place where our Foundation work began and For a team that is still limited in enough big men to be able to crash the boards with impunity, where we remain committed and invested.” the Tigers find a way to clear the glass both offensively and defensively to keep them in any game they play. They still must face Auburn, Kentucky and Tennessee this season but they have Belle Chasse Academy is a pre-K through eighth grade public charter school that serves the five parishes of Greater New Orleans. Hi, Everyone!

email me! PaulaJ3036@gmail.com

Hope all is well with you and your families. And you have been crafting away. Sorry, I cannot say the same. I still have not gotten the craft room done. And it seems as though every time I think today will be the day something. happens and I have other obligations. But, I will get there, I promise. Even though I have nothing to show you this time, I can tell you what I am working on. My daughter showed me a picture of a glittered Yeti stemmed wine glass. And I thought, I can do that with a regular wine glass. Well, similar, anyway. So a trip to the craft store for dishwasher safe Modge Podge and glitter. I already had wine glasses, frog tape, and paint brushes. So, I taped off the bottom section of the wine glass. and applied a liberal amount of Modge Podge sprinkled on the glitter over a paper plate so I could reuse the excess. Looked at the glass closely to make sure everything was covered. Than I removed the frog tape. I was carefully (so I thought) moving it to a safe place where it needed to dry for 4 hours, when somehow it slipped and fell on the floor. Shattering the wine glass and glitter every where. So, with that being said, I was not in the mood to start over. Sorry. I have got to get the craft room done. Well, that’s it for this time. Hope your craft projects go a lot better than mine. What will your next craft project be? Mine...………..I have no idea. Sincerely, Ronald & Paula Johnson

Now is a good time of the year to start pruning back yard fruit trees. Horticulturists recommend pruning during late winter when trees are dormant. It is easy to see and prune undesirable branches when there are no leaves on the tree. The wounds created by pruning heal faster because the spring growth period directly follows. Tree bark is less likely to tear because sap flow is greatly reduced during the winter months. Try to time the pruning process just before spring bud break for best results. The first step in pruning is to gather the right tools. A well-stocked tool kit should always accompany a gardener with a mission to prune. Some of the basics include handheld bypass pruners, lopper style pruners and a pruning saw to make large cuts. Make sure pruners are clean and sharp. When pruning, you want to make smooth clean cuts. Clean cuts minimize damaged tissue and allow the tree to heal faster. Start the pruning process by removing dead, diseased, and damaged limbs completely from the tree. Be meticulous as you examine the tree. Stand at the drip line and look inward toward the trunk of the tree. Make your way the entire tree as you look for limbs to remove. Next, go through and examine the tree for any limbs that cross and rub on each other. Select the healthiest limb and completely remove the other from the tree. The remaining steps can differ from tree to tree. Apples, peaches, nectarines, and plums are commonly pruned to an “open center” style. This helps with keeping the tree wider rather than taller and most importantly, it helps to maximize the amount of sunlight hitting each leaf on the tree. On young trees, the central leader is removed to encourage horizontal branching and limbs are removed from the inner canopy. Many people say that open center fruit trees resemble upside down umbrellas with no handles.

Muscadines and grapes are pruned on a trellising system. Young plants are trained to grow on one trunk and run down a wire support. Remove damaged wood from the vines entirely. Cut all of the lateral shoots produced during previous growing season back to two to four dormant buds creating a fruiting spur. Older spurs can eventually become multi branch and difficult to maintain. You can remove older fruiting spurs and allow a new shoot to grow and eventually fill in.

February is usually our coldest month of the year. What better to do than prepare your backyard fruit trees for the oncoming spring? As with all gardening practices, there are many benefits to pruning. Prune fruit trees on an annual basis to maintain good tree health, encourage proper growth, maximize productivity, improve fruit quality, and to control their size and shape. Limbs and branches damaged during the growing season are also removed from the tree.

Citrus trees do not require much pruning. Prune off any branches that grow towards the ground. This helps with mowing and herbicide applications. It also prevents contact with the ground when as fruit growth and develop during the growing season. Remove branches that growth straight up. This helps control the height of the tree. The tree canopy can also be thinned to improve airflow. Try not to over prune a citrus tree. It will cause excessive growth and a delay in flowering.

Fertilizer should be applied soon after prior to spring green up. Use a soil test analysis as a guide. A rate of 1lbs 8-8-8 (about two baking cups) for every year in age can be used if a soil test is not available. Evenly spread fertilizer through the drip line of the tree and thoroughly water it in.

This morning I had coffee and was bored. I called a few guys. They were busy. I knew conditions were not good at all but I wanted to get out anyway. High winds, very low water, and continuously getting dirty. The exceptionally high river was pushing in a lot of fresh water to help chase the fish away. I ran around a lot and went bite less for 4 hours. Not even a hard head catfish. On the way in for lunch I hit a small pond that I could not get into before.

I landed my first fish in the boat at 12:09. It was a nice 26 incher. Lunch could wait.

Then a 27 incher about 10 minutes later. Soon after I missed one.

Once he lands our beloved lane snapper he is quick to catch up to me and reminding me of that fact. We were bothered by trigger fish and red snapper so the action was hot all day. Our other trip total was 8 lane snapper and a strawberry grouper. He did out fish me with a beautiful strawberry grouper.

Here is a small one we caught last year.

My next one was a 25 incher about 20 minutes later. Not a bad scouting day. I figured things were lighting up. NOT! It took some time before I landed a good 20 incher on my personal setup. I finished up with those four and went to lunch.
