Tony’s Takes

EBB TIDE Growing up, I was exposed to a phenomenal variety of music, from the last days of Big Band and Swing to post-war crooners and the early days of rock and roll. Country wasn’t the music of choice in San Francisco except for Hank Williams, whose songs struck a chord everywhere. In fact, if it weren’t for “Jambalaya”, I never would have fostered the appreciation for Louisiana that began when Hank sang “Goodbye, Joe, me gotta go, me oh my oh, got to go, row the pirogue down the bayou…..”. More than Disneyland, more than the woods or the ocean, those lyrics conjured up the images of a way of life foreign yet familiar to me because of my father’s heritage in South Louisiana. Fast forward to the turbulent ’60’s, when guys like me from California were not exactly welcomed in this part of the Yewnited States. Fortunately, a summer trip after high school graduation and my crazy uncle Sully (Soo-Lee) and my equally crazy cousins got me acclimated to les bon temps roller of this wonderful region through various bar and bayou trips in and around New Iberia. Along with this love came the appreciation of LSU football, which I listened to as a young teenager on my dad’s portable radio at night. WWL came in loud and clear and when a powerful, quick and market savvy man named Billy Cannon put LSU on the national sports map in 1959, I was hooked. I spent many a Saturday night in Tiger Stadium as a college student, watching the exploits of Doug Moreau, Ruffin Rodrigue, Pat Screen, George Rice, my old, departed friend Dave McCormick and Joe Labruzzo, among many others, thrill me with the legend of Death Valley up close and personal.

Louisiana Department of Wildlife & Fisheries Becoming an Outdoors-Woman Workshop Registration to Begin Jan. 11 Jan. 9, 2019 - The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) will sponsor its 31st Becoming an Outdoors-Woman (BOW) workshop on March 22-24, 2019, at Camp Grant Walker in Pollock. It’s an opportunity for women throughout Louisiana and neighboring states to attend an educational hands-on outdoor skills workshop. If you are a woman 18 or older and you enjoy the outdoors, you will love this three-day skill’s workshop. Registration opens Friday (Jan. 11, 2019). Anyone interested is urged to register as soon as possible beginning Jan. 11. The $200 fee (check or money order only) includes instruction for four selected classes, program materials, use of demonstration equipment, lodging, meals and a T-shirt.

In those days, LSU didn’t play Alabama every year and Ole Miss was the biggest rivalry. But with the tenures of Bear Bryant and Charlie McClendon, that rivalry began to take on a life of its own. “Mac” was fired in 1979 because he couldn’t beat The Bear often enough. Today, Mac would be fired because he couldn’t beat “The Satan” often enough, the sawed-off son of a Fairmont, West Virginia car dealer. Before finding success at LSU in the early 2000’s, Nick Saban was a relatively unknown coach at Michigan State and other venues, including a stretch with Bill Belichick before his days with the New England Patriots. And then he signed with Alabama. But his years at Alabama created a monster legend of a man….and a Process….and a demeanor where a smile would somehow destroy his persona. And a football team that rarely got beaten but even then made it a battle royal until the final gun. Until last week. Remember the old Brylcreem ads (if you’re over 65, maybe). Brylcreem was a British hair product that hit the U.S. after World War Two. It was supposed to make your hair behave and give the man using it a worldly and sophisticated air. The old jingle went “Brylcreem a little dab will do ya, Brylcreem, you’ll look so debonaire, but watch out, the girls will all pursue ya, they love to get their fingers in your hair.” Growing up, I used equal parts Brylcreem and Butch Wax, depending on the hairstyle in my age group. Well, last week, a coach name Dabo Swinney, a former Alabama football player, took a freshman quarterback, freshman receiver and experienced running backs and defensive linemen and tore Mr. Saban “a new one”. The final score, if you’ve been out of the country, was 44 to 16 in the national championship game, Clemson over Alabama. Saban never lost a game in the SEC by that margin….ever!! But it happened in Santa Clara’s Levis Stadium on January 7th, 2019.

Now, experts are saying the Clemson, the team that beat Saban and Alabama, is the new Alabama. Not so fast. But there was a blueprint created last week that every SEC coach and defensive coordinator has filed under “Urgent- Top Priority!”. How the Tigers created an Ebb Tide will be discussed for years among the faithful, including those ‘Bama fans who are Participants will enroll in four classes from a selection of more than 30 topics. These subjects moved to tears whenever the Tide doesn’t win or loses a lead. And to the hundreds of North include bucks and does, shotgun, rifle, handguns, fly-fishing, kayaking, camping, archery, fishing, boating/trailering, compass skills, outdoor photography, camp cooking and more. Expert Alabamians admitted to urgent care hospitals and emergency rooms with broken limbs and instructors donate their time and skills in classes taught in and around the nearby streams, lakes, dislocated body parts….well, guys, it’s hard to commit suicide jumping off the top of a double wide. Just sayin’. wooded ridges and forest trails of beautiful Louisiana. Natural resource scientist Christine Thomas of the University of Wisconsin founded the Becoming an Outdoors-Woman program. She completed a survey in 1991 entitled ‘Barriers to Women Participating in Hunting and Fishing.’ It documented that the most obvious problem was lack of instruction and encouragement. To receive a registration form, download and print from our web page at http://www.wlf. louisiana.gov/becoming-outdoors-woman . The forms will not be available until Friday (Jan. 11, 2019). They must be returned by mail to the address on the form. Hand delivered forms will not be accepted. Please read the registration process and the course descriptions prior to filling out the form. Registration will be taken until the workshop is full. All forms received after the workshop is full will be placed on a waiting list in case of cancellations. LDWF, Continued on page 4

Allow the rest of the SEC to trash talk you while they can. Saban will not suffer fools (or lopsided losses) gladly and the Tide will Roll again. But maybe with a little more humility, Meanwhile, that Brylcreem jingle has been updated. Ready, singers: “BAMA, a little DABO do ya, play him, only if you dare, but watch out, the defense will pursue ya, they love to kick Nick Saban’s derriere’”

REMEMBER OUR VETERANS! We are grateful for your sacrifices and your service!

By Paula Johnson

Hi, Everyone!

email me! PaulaJ3036@gmail.com

Hope things are going well for you so far in the New Year and you have lots of wonderful dreams to fulfill in 2019. And hoping that all those creative juices are flowing and the ideas are multiplying inside your mind and spilling out into the beautiful crafts you are creating. Today, I am showing you a gift that my granddaughter made for one of her teachers. Infact, she made all her teacher gifts this year and I will be showing you those also at a later date, She has a teacher who loves unicorns. (Have you noticed that Unicorn’s are the In Thing for 2019?) She kept telling me, “MaMaw, we have to make a “Unicorn Wreath”. So we went to Hobby Lobby and Michael’s looking for anything Unicorn related, which was Not an easy task. I have to admit it took us awhile for her to finally settle on the supplies. Once we had everything she wanted putting it all together was lots of fun. I must admit, I was there strictly to guide her and give her morale support. She created this beautiful wreath all on her own. I think she did a fabulous job on her wreath. And I am very proud to say that my Carlea’ is a crafting monster just like me! Love it!! She is really very creative and I do appreciate her work. Hope you like what she made for her teacher. So what will your next craft project be? Mine...…….I don’t know. But, I know it will be lots of fun. Sincerely, Paula Johnson

With the sporadic nature of our winter weather, freezing temperatures and then 80° warm-ups, South Louisiana gardeners need to make sure they are most productive with maintaining our landscapes. Follow this simple checklist to help keep you on task.

• Remove and discard any dead or diseased plant material. Sometimes plants just don’t make it. Replace flowers with transplants from the garden center. We are still in the cool season so look for plants like alyssum, calendula, diascia, dianthus, nemisia, ornamental cabbage/ kale, pansy, petunia, snapdragon, and viola. There are a few biennial plants that if were planted soon enough, would produce brilliant spring blooms. These include delphinium, foxglove, hollyhock and columbine. • Take advantage of the cooler weather and plant trees and shrubs now. This is also a good time to transplant any existing shrubs and relocate to new areas. Be careful not to plant things too low in the ground. Remember to dig your planting twice as wide and not quite as deep as the root ball is tall. It is completely ok to have it sit slightly higher than ground level. • Rose lovers will enjoy this month. Local garden centers and plant nurseries will be receiving their annual orders of bare root rose bushes soon, if not so already. Now is the time to scout and see which new rose you would like to include your garden. You may even purchase your own bare root plants via mail order catalogs and websites. Planting bare root roses is somewhat similar to a potted plant but with the soil removed. You may prune out any broken roots but don’t over prune. Locate the soil line on the main stem where it was planted in the field as use it as your guide when digging the hole. Cover with the back fill and water in. • Combat existing winter weeds in the lawn like clover and dandelion using a 4 way herbicide like Fertilome’s Weed Free Zone or Ortho’s Weed B Gon for Southern Lawns. Atrazine is another popular herbicide used to control weeds in southern lawns. It has both post-emergent and pre-emergent qualities. Use it now to control annual bluegrass and lawn burweed. Remember to read and follow label instructions before applying any pesticides. • Replant cool season vegetables this month to harvest in early spring. Plant vegetables such as broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, collards, lettuce, mustards, and turnips. Look for transplants at the nursery for optimum production. • Plant Irish potatoes this month for a spring harvest. Seed potatoes will be available at feed stores and garden centers after the first of the year. Cut the potatoes into inch and half pieces, with one to two eyes per piece. Allow them to harden off for about a week at the windowsill near the kitchen sink. To plant in the garden, dig a small trench about 3 inches deep. Place potatoes pieces in trench every 12 inches and then cover will soil. Plants can be harvested in 90-120 days from planting. • Prune deciduous trees in January and February. Use sharp pruners (hand pruners or loppers) to make clean cuts. Remove and broken or diseased limbs form the canopy. Branches should generally radiate from the center of the tree. Remove branches that cross and grow towards the center of the tree. Remember to follow the branch or limb to where it originates and remove it there. Do not leave “stub” cuts.

I had 3 generations with me for 3 days. I met Jerry grandfather, Jerry father, and Cory son, at Cypress Cove. The second day with the 3 generations started out with only 2 of them. Grandpa Jerry’s legs could not take another straight day on the boat. In a way this was a good thing because he was having issues fighting 22 to 25 inch redfish. They are all red headed fair skinned guys from Illinois. Today they had the sunscreen and were putting it on. I think the very strong winds of the day before also got to them.

This ended rather quickly and I continued on. I moved into the shallows along the beach and did not stay there long. The waves were pushing me onto the shore too fast. I headed into the shallows of a cove. This area is dangerous because the oyster beds are just under the water. Before you know it your boat can be on them and the bottom of your boat can get ruined by the sharp hard oysters. This is where we finished our day. We had a good bite going and another double hookup. A pleasant surprise.

I had dad and son out looking for bull reds. I got out on the outside but there was not a bird in sight. I headed down the beach looking for birds or bait. The water was not looking good. There were other boats in the area and there were no rods bending at all. I was getting ready to move to another place all together but before I left another captain told me he had heard of one of the guys hooking up. I really did not want to run 20 miles away so I moved a bit north and found much better water. There was a little bait now so I felt better. Dad was the first to hook up. He was wondering how the bite would be. I told him to just hang on to the rod. The bite of the first fish was very slow and casual. It was almost like the fish were full and not interested in eating at all. This was going to be a long slow day. I was watching another boat within casting range hooking up and we were just casting. Once I found the right color we had a rod bend. This time it was Cory’s time to hook up. It was still another lethargic type of bite. Something was not quite right. Maybe they had so much bait there they were just swimming around with their mouths open and taking what ever entered it’s mouth.

Some trout had moved on to the oyster reefs and were taking our large redfish lures. These were all very good trout. I even hooked up a VuDu shrimp and got one on it as well as a flounder. We managed to get 5 of them. This would be enough for our evening meal cooked by Venice Marina. We had half grilled and half fried.

At least they each had one and we were getting some action. It seemed the fish had moved out to deeper water. This could also be the reason for a much different bite. Now that I finally had the right color bait it was getting much better. We were into the studs they were looking for. This went on for a while as long as we could keep up with the school of bait. Unfortunately all good things must come to an end and reality check comes into view. The fish had moved. We were 3 to 4 miles out in 25 feet of water. I picked up and started heading into the shallow water near the beach. About half way there I notice some bait popping and quickly throttled down almost forcing one of them off the seat. I told them to get the rods and cast quickly. This paid off as they both hooked up right away. So much for sneaking up on them. It was more like a lightning attack. Unfortunately dad had his throw the hook. These fish are so big and fight so hard it is not unusual for them to throw the hook, straighten the hook, or break the line.

No matter what it worked. I called one of the guys over and I had 7 boats show up. The power of the radio. Nobody was listening though. We all fish with each other and know each other. The waters are open and belong to no one. As long as you do not interfere with the other boats fishing. You have to respect the other boat.

During our evening meal Cory started feeling bad. Two days in the sun and wind had taken it’s toll on the fair skinned redhead. He got quite sick that night. With Grandpa’s bad knees and Cory’s sun poisoning our third day on the water had to be canceled. Cory and Dad will be back again. Unfortunately that may have been the last trip here for Grandpa. At least it was a memorable one with a lot of action and good fish. Life is Good! Edited by CAPT. HOOP (November 19, 2017 09:37 AM) Fishing is not a matter of life or death. It’s more important than that. CAPT HOOP -- OUR FREEDOM
