Louisiana Department of Wildlife & Fisheries AMENDED: California Judge Temporarily Blocks Ban That Would Harm Louisiana Alligator Industry BATON ROUGE, La. – A federal judge in California has issued a temporary restraining order prohibiting enforcement of that state’s effort to ban the sale and importation of alligator and crocodile products, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) announced Friday (Dec. 27). California’s ban, which would devastate Louisiana’s lucrative alligator product industry, was scheduled to go into effect on Jan.1, 2020. Louisiana officials also worried this ban would harm coastal conservation efforts associated with the maintenance of alligator habitats. The Louisiana Attorney General’s office filed the lawsuit earlier this month in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of California to prohibit the ban from taking effect at the request of the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission. The federal court will hear the Commission’s motion for a preliminary injunction on April 24, 2020. Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards said, “The temporary restraining order is the first step in protecting Louisiana’s alligator industry, which creates jobs, supports our economy and contributes to much-needed coastal restoration efforts.” Commission Chairman Al Sunseri said, “I am encouraged to see the court is taking a hard look at the irreparable harm California’s alligator ban will impose on our industry and Louisiana’s coastal conservation efforts. I hope this order gives the industry the confidence it needs to know that we are fighting for it.” Louisiana’s alligator industry, under the guidance of LDWF and its restoration programs, has brought the alligator population from near extinction to nearly 3 million alligators in the wild and on farms in Louisiana. LDWF Secretary Jack Montoucet said, “I hope the courts will understand the unique combination of the industry’s effort to care for the alligator population and the need to be good stewards of the environment where the alligators live.” Any person who is subject to enforcement of Section 653o in violation of the temporary restraining order is encouraged to report the incident to Deputy Solicitor General Scott St. John, stjohnj@ag.louisiana.gov. LDWF Agents Utilize Drone to Catch Illegal Oyster Harvester Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries enforcement agents cited an oyster fisherman for alleged oyster violations on Dec. 20 in Calcasieu Parish. Agents cited Alexander Antonio Amaya-Zelaya, 37, from Terrytown, for taking oysters from a polluted area, violating the sanitary code and failing to display proper numbers on the vessel. Agents responded to complaints of illegal oyster harvests in lower Calcasieu Parish. Using aerial surveillance from a drone, agents observed and recorded Alexander illegally harvesting oysters in polluted waters. The vessel also did not display the required numbers visible by air and did not have a human waste receptacle. Agents seized 10 sacks of oysters and returned them to the water. The vessel was seized on a department seizure order. LDWF agents began utilizing drones for aerial surveillance on oyster patrols in March of 2018. Taking oysters from an unapproved polluted area brings a $900 to $950 fine and up to 120 days in jail. The men could also face having their oyster harvester licenses revoked by LDWF for up to one year. The violators could also be sentenced to perform 40 hours of community service and only be allowed to harvest oysters from a vessel that is equipped with a vessel monitoring device for up to one year. Failing to display proper numbers on the vessel brings a $50 fine and up to 15 days in jail. Violate the sanitary code brings up to a $25 fine and 15 days in jail. SINGLE MAN? Tony’s Take ATLANTA STADIUM AS FRESH, EXCITING AS TIGER FOOTBALL Our trip to Atlanta last weekend was as mellow a time as I’ve had in this overgrown Piedmont town in many a year. Besides the usual construction and traffic, which really wasn’t that bad (the traffic, that is), the town was laid back for the arrival of tens of thousands of LSU fans and about a third of that for Sooner supporters. The hospitality was palatable; people were on their best behavior and the downtown area never looked better. Our stay at the Georgia Tech Hotel and Convention Center, about two miles from the Mercedes Benz Stadium, was seamless and enjoyable. Upon arriving at Centennial Park, which is really a pocket sized area, what we call in San Francisco a neighborhood park, the choices of entertainment and food were boundless. My wife and I toured the College Football Hall of Fame, CNN and walked the CNN Mall while waiting for early afternoon to walk up a gentle hill to the area where the stadium was located. Centennial Park is less than a half-mile from Mercedes-Benz Stadium and it’s a magnet for visitor and native alike. To call this wonder a stadium doesn’t do it justice; like the Superdome of the ’70’s, this edifice makes all newer stadia look like doghouses, including Jerry’s World in Arlington and Levis Stadium in Santa Clara, Forget cold winds and blistering sunshine but also forget dark sight lines and some feelings of claustrophobia. This one and one half billion dollar building has almost everything: elevators, real department store escalators, a south end zone Skywalk, where, like in Arlington, fans can lean on the rating, complete with food and drink shelves, and watch the game, wide, pleasant concourses, lots of restrooms and dining tables, plenty of concession areas and choices. In fact, that area is set up like getting something to eat or drink at the airport. But the real kicker is the pricing. When was the last time you paid $1.50 for a hot dog, $2.00 for a soft drink, $2.00 for peanuts or popcorn, $3.00 for a pizza slice or hamburger or $5.00 for a domestic 12 ounce beer at a major sporting venue? When did said venues offer unlimited refills on all soft drinks and ice at no cost, condiment stations with freshly sliced tomatoes and prepared lettuce leaves and onions, relish, catsup, mayonnaise and two types of mustard? When’s the last time you entered a family restroom at this type of venue? If you wanted other choices of food, including wraps, tacos, mac and cheese, salads, veggie selections, desserts and a whole bunch of stuff I didn’t have time to seek out, it was there. And cashless. Take a $20 to a kiosk, get a debit card which you can use anywhere outside the stadium, and pay for your concessions or gifts. Quick and easy, clean and affordable, thanks to the Head Dirty Bird, Arthur Blank, who wants to keep his stadium affordable for a fan base that will never sell out because of the product inside (the Falcons) and the lack of commonality of the average Falcon fan, most of whom never grew up anywhere near Atlanta. Now the game. Watching a huge circular video board was a fan-changing experience. Unlike most other venues, you only have to look to this one board for all of your information, whether commercial, game action or statistics. With room to roam and natural light coming into the area from the south end zone windows, which look out over downtown Atlanta, the place is just too pleasant a location not to like. Extremely accessible over normal street and highway arteries and close to great amenities, Mercedes-Benz Atlanta is what all venues should strive for if they want the fans of the ’20s to attend. Make them comfortable, fun, affordable, awe-inspiring and…… safe. No neighborhood problems here, no bad buffer zones. And convenient. No need to drive 20 to 40 miles to Santa Clara or Foxboro, no Meadowlands disaster, plenty of public transportation like Boston and New York but cleaner and virtually hassle-free. These are things I have advocated for LSU to do but again, don’t confuse their sports success with the ability of their marketing leadership to ever take the innovative steps to make Tiger Stadium awesome outside of its fan base. Keeping the tired bench seats, steep ramps, overcrowded concourses, refusal to implement what they say they will do because of political or economic pressure will keep the stadium’s interior in the Dark Ages. All the questionnaires in the world won’t help unless the leadership opens their minds and their pocketbooks and make the changes necessary to keep this venerable stadium full on six or seven Saturday afternoons or evenings. -0-

Words to GREAUX by PLANTING POTATOES
Whether you are slipping into routine, trying something new, or looking for a new gardening project to involve the kids, growing Irish potatoes is always an exciting endeavor in the vegetable gardening. The month of January is the calendar reminder that signals the time to start planting the famous tubers to get a spring harvest. Soon you will begin seeing seed potatoes for sale at feed stores and garden centers. Seed potatoes are no different from the potatoes found in the produce section at your local supermarket. The only difference is that they are specifically grown to start new plants. ‘Norland,’ ‘Red LaSoda,’ and ‘Red Pontiac’ are Will Afton recommended red-skinned varieties. Some recommended white-skinned varieties include; ‘Atlantic,’ ‘LaChipper,’ ‘Kennebec,’ and ‘Norchip.’ Prepare seed potatoes by storing them in a cool, dark place (50-60°F) for about a week. An enclosed bag stored in the garage during this time of year works well. Proper storage helps increase sprouting of the eyes so that you can easily see them. The eyes of potatoes are botanically identified as nodes, the same nodes that you find along all plant stems. The potato itself is a modified stem and contains all of the same parts you would find on a stem. Cut seed potatoes into 5-6 pieces (with the goal of having at least one “eye” on each piece. Let them sit on the counter for a few days so they have a chance to harden off, giving them a better chance at survival in the garden. Refer to the previous year’s notes and locate a section of the garden where bell peppers, eggplants or tomatoes were not grown. Along with potatoes, all of these crops are in the same family, therefor are susceptible to some of the same diseases. Proper crop rotation is an effective disease management technique. Add a few shovelfuls of organic material and cultivate the soil well to loosen the soil and improve drainage. To plant a 25ft row, dig a small trench (about 3 inches deep) from the front of the row to the back. Place seed potatoes in the trench every foot. Incorporate ½ cup of 8-8-8 fertilizer into the backfill for each row and cover the potatoes. Don’t expect immediate growth right away due to the weather but as the days get longer and the soil gets warmer, they will start to grow. Days to harvest range from 90-115 days depending on variety so mark it in a garden journal to help estimate the best time to harvest.

Capt. Hoop/ Our Freedom / Life is Good! Several days we fished right in front of the famous blow hole. It can go from 150 feet to 1,200 feet in just a turn of the boat.
The festival was in full swing.
Most of our fishing here is trolling. They also do deep dropping. As luck would have it the only tuna we hooked up dove down and deep and came unbuttoned just prior to spoolung one of our 50 wides. We did managed to get a lot of baracuda that we throw back unless we want to keep some for deep drop bait.
There were about 40 boats in the parade and a fireworks display that followed. It was different in many ways from what I have seen state side.
Many days they decided to just get wetand add to the enjoyment of the day.
This was the only fish i could catch on every trip. There was a day we watched a school of Mahi chaseing flying fish. These fish were gaffing size. The friggate birds even had a tume catching up with the lightning speed of the mahi and flying fish.
My house duties were taking care of Deco the Catahoula, and Skyler the sheltie sheep dog. I’m missing these guys big time already.
My year ended in an unusual and pleasant way. Captain Shane called me and said he need a captain to run a few trips while he went away for a while. I did not give it much thought and booked a one way ticket to St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin islands. There was no time set on this because we had other things in the works. I was a good choice for him because I would be running my old boat that he had bought from me and brought there.
This was a work / house sitting / dog sitting / and all out amazing adventure that would make me many new friends. Getting back on my boat I saw he had rewired a lot of it and made some changes i should have done a long time ago. We had many gatherings as the island is known for. A big one was the christmas boat parade.
