by David Scheller There are a lot of big names in the world of skiing: Vail, Aspen, Whistler, Steamboat, and Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, to name a few. Although these famous destinations are all inconveniently far away, there are plenty of smaller but nonetheless great places nearby where a Fargoan can enjoy a fine day of skiing or snowboarding on their day off. One of these, Detroit Mountain in Detroit Lakes, MN, is only an hour’s drive east. The ski area is home to 21 distinct trails along with two triple chairlifts and two magic carpets lifts, as well as a 1,100’ tubing hill with 10 individual runs. It’s a lovely place, and worth a visit even if you’ve never skied or snowboarded before.

snowboarders of every skill level. Those new to alpine sport will enjoy a green circle like the Long Haul, an aptly named and leisurely meander through the woods. Blue squares like the Money Run and the Rip Tide provide a bit more speed, albeit over somewhat shorter distances, and single and double black diamonds such as the Heavy Metal and Mad Dog offer the ultimate tests of skill.
If you’re at your finest while you’re airborne, then Scheels Terrain Park will be a font of excitement for you. This course is home to several obstacles including rails and boxes that you can grind, as well as jumps from which you can get “big air.” Scheels has its own dedicated high speed tow ropes, so you can do what the cool kids would call “sick,” “far out,” and “nifty” tricks all day long. Scheels changes frequently, so you may always expect an interesting new layout on which to demonstrate your prowess.

S P OT L I G HT It’s entirely possible that you, a Midwesterner, have not got skis or a snowboard. This is no impediment to enjoying everything that Detroit Mountain has got to offer. The area has partnered with industry giants Head and Burton to have on hand every piece of equipment one could need to shred the hill, as well as helmets of all sizes. Given that Detroit Mountain has only been in operation for five years, their equipment is all in tip-top condition, so you’re guaranteed only the very best rentals there. They’ve even got fat bikes for rent, which have wide forks to accommodate their tremendous tires. You can take these down one of the mountain’s dedicated bike trails for something like you’ve likely never experienced before.
Skiing and snowboarding are some of the most strenuous sports there are, right next to rock climbing and raising small children. Nothing will do after a day on the slopes save for good food and strong drink. Detroit Mountain knows this, as their cafeteria has hearty foods like pizza, burgers, and fries to fortify you, and their full-service saloon serves the restoratives essential to make you feel whole once more. Solving a murder mystery in real life is no fun at all. You’ve got to investigate the crime scene, gather clues, interview witnesses, weigh motives, get a warrant, and finally make an arrest. You’re tripped up all along the way by annoying obstacles like habeas corpus, the Fifth Amendment, and relentless dockside shootouts and high-speed car chases through farmers’ markets. On top of all that, even the most meticulous detective risks having all their work undone during trial by some hotshot lawyer in a sharkskin suit. Don’t you wish you could be involved in a murder mystery without the hard work, danger, and, above all, actual murder? That’s exactly the pleasure which Jest Murder Mysteries provides, all the satisfying accusatory finger wagging without having to replace the carpet afterward. If Sherlock Holmes had Jest Murder Mysteries, he’d have stuck to playing violin. Jest was founded by writer, actor, and director Randy Manning in St. Louis back in 1999. He had cut his teeth on some other murder mystery shows, learned what gelled and what didn’t in such a specialized production, and decided he could put on the ultimate one. So he did, and his specialized troops are now based in 15 cities and travel the country to put on dinner shows. Randy’s daughter, Leslie Franklin, has just taken over Jest and continues its whimsical business as Randy envisioned it. Jest works like this: You pick the venue (which Jest will recommend, if you like), arrange dinner, and invite your guests. Then you pick which show you’d like, be it Bullets in the Bathtub, a mobster and flapper speakeasy romp, Death of Blackheart, a pirate hostage fantasy, or any one of their other themed productions. Jest will then ship out the actors needed to turn what otherwise might have been just another perfunctory feedbag affair into an interactive theater experience 10

"The reason I'm in this business, I assume all performers are -- it's 'Look at me, Ma, look at me, Ma, look at me, Ma.'" -Lenny Bruce Stand-up comedy is a unique form of art, as it's the only one which you need to watch the artist perform in person in order to get the full brunt of its effect. (Quarrelsome readers may point out that performance art shares that feature, making stand-up not unique at all. They are wrong, because bizarre capering, cacophonous

ululation, and yanking scrolls from one's body crevices are not, in fact, art.) You would be bored to tears watching Michelangelo chip a tower of marble into David, just as well as you would be watching E.H. ink The Old Man and the Sea. But with stand-up, the artist connects with you on a personal level. He just wants to make you laugh -- it's the only thing he has to do up there on stage, really. In that sense, in stand-up comedy, you are the medium. Fargoans are funny people, so it is strange to think they have been without their own dedicated comedy club for quite so long. Aaron and Lindsey Templin, the proprietors of Front Street Taproom, have changed all that by starting The Cellar, the aptly named comedy theater beneath their bar and restaurant. "We opened The Cellar in March last year," said Aaron. "Before we dove headfirst into it, though, we went to some classic standup institutions to get some inspiration for what our place should look like. We quickly discovered that the dark, intimate settings of clubs like The Comedy Cellar in New York City and Acme Comedy Club in Minneapolis are the best for the audience to connect with a comedian in. They limit what you can pay attention to, as opposed to the Taproom upstairs which has a million things going on at once. "Probably the biggest thing that The Cellar has going for it is Zach Tooker, a local comedy club expert who I was lucky enough to meet

by chance. Zach used to work at Courtney's, and opened Level 2 at the Radisson a few years ago. His experience means that Zach's connected to great comedians from all around the country, talent like Eddie Pepitone, Brian Miller, Tommy Rynan, Mary Mack, and Fargo's own Adam Quesnel. Because of Zach, The Cellar has hosted a lot of comedians who've appeared on TV including Conan and Last Comic Standing. "One thing that we've been cautious about is creating 'comedy fatigue.' Even though Fargo's a big town, if we have shows too often at first we'll essentially oversaturate the comedy market. We always want big turnouts, because that creates the kind of energy that a comedian best flourishes in. We also want star talent, which means taking our time to bring only the best comedians to Fargo that the country has to offer. We started out doing one show a month last year, and then two. The goal is to make this a really frequent thing sometime in the future. I know we'll get there." While Aaron stresses that booze is in no way necessary to fully appreciate the subtle nuances of stand-up comedy, anyone who's ever had a few knows how perfectly it complements funny stuff. Lucky for us, the Taproom is replete with great potions to choose from. They've 30 local beers on tap representing the pinnacle of what North Dakota and Minnesota have to offer including Fargo Brewing and Drekker. (There's wine, too, for the hoity toity types.) You can bring anything from the Taproom downstairs, or take advantage of the satellite bar right there in The Cellar itself. You'll enjoy the Taproom's embarrassment of riches when it comes to other activities to enjoy there as well, including live music, trivia, and open mic nights. (Open mic nights are for the bold. I tried one once, in Toronto, after I had drank far too much absinthe, which is technically any amount of absinthe. I vaguely recall my friends having to stop me before the Bulgarian man I was hazily attempting the Rickles treatment at pummeled me senseless. Lesson learned -- it's only gin for me going forward.) The Front Street Taproom and The Cellar are at 614 Main Ave in downtown Fargo. Go and show them that Fargoans deserve a hearty chuckle whenever they'd like one.

by David Scheller No medium’s properties are quite so dichotomous as those of glass. It is harder than stone in many cases, and so enduring that wine glasses made by the Romans have survived intact to this day. At the same time its fragility puts it at perpetual odds with gravity, and any hard surface around it could spell glass’s instant doom. In a sense, glass is representative of humanity’s will to create as a whole. Here we are, spinning around through space, creating marvel after marvel, when at any moment some indifferent cosmic missile could transform our entire experiment to soot.
“you get to play with fire” Glass has few stronger proponents than Fargo’s own Jon Offutt, who in his studio House of Mulciber heats, blows, and spins the material into truly beautiful things. “I spent my time in high school sculpting clay, but I was drawn to glassblowing shortly thereafter,” explained Jon. “Glass is like clay for its malleability, and working in the vessel form is always intriguing because it causes you to look for ways to bend its rules however you can. Where glass best outshines clay, however, is that in working with it you get to play with fire. “Humans are naturally attracted to flames,” Jon continued, “But we’re also inherently cautious around them. That constant push-pull in the creative process influences my thinking in unpredictable ways.” Working by a furnace heated to 2,100 degrees all day long is not as perilous as you might think, provided you take the right precautions. “One of a glassblower’s most valuable pieces of equipment are his leather shoes,” Jon explained. “A misplaced strand of molten glass across your toes is a major issue if you are wearing sneakers. It would melt right through and become a part of your foot in an instant. “Because glass has to be so hot when you work with it, I think of the process as an hour of making right decisions in a row. There is no going back to resolve something once a mistake has been made. If you’re dissatisfied with any part of a piece, the only option is to try making it again from scratch. Glassblowing feels as though you’re breathing life into something.” Much of Jon’s work is heavily influenced by North Dakota’s natural beauty. His landscape pieces bring the rollicking prairies instantly to mind, with verdant flats and cornflower skies laced by wispy stratocumuli. Other pieces from his collection make use of bold reds and yellows, evocative of the same fires that they were forged in. His more whimsical work births fish that seem as though they’re made of ribbon candy, along with other Wonka-esque constructs. The artist’s imagination makes use of glass in ways I hadn’t thought possible before. Jon spends half of his year on the road selling, traveling to art shows and festivals throughout the Midwest to find homes for his pieces. (For this reason, packaging is another of his fields of profound expertise.) He won’t stray too far from home, however, lest he miss time with his wife, daughter, and dogs.

In addition to his other duties on the farm, the plantation foreman took it upon himself to make a giant batch of his signature barbecue sauce and slather it on a heap of ribs and quartered chickens to reward his men after a big crop had been harvested or some other important milestone had been achieved. Barbecue is the finest tool at a manager’s disposal to keep up morale. The plantation prospered. A committed saucier, Carry would also whip up big batches of the stuff for his 11 children, as well as anyone else in the neighborhood who would be drawn in by the smell of his barbecue. One of his children, Bill, took special note of his father’s sauce’s immense power to bring people together. That power would become his key inheritance from his father.

When we are asked to define what great art is, it’s easy to fall into snobbery and only offer highfalutin examples. We all know that the Venus de Milo, Mona Lisa, and Sistine Chapel ceiling comprise the best of the best of what mankind has created in the past -- but great art needn’t have been made centuries ago by some long gone genius to be deemed as such. Great art may very well have been chainsawed into the form of a jovial bear by a Fargoan in his garage one afternoon. This is exactly the case for Jay Ray. Jay grew up under the auspice of a father who always had him busy fixing up the house. “I didn’t appreciate having to work when I was a kid, but I sure do now,” Jay recalled. “The old man taught me how to be handy, which is one of the most important things anyone can be. It’s thanks to him that I get to remodel houses as a contractor now. It’s the best kind of life because you can set your own hours, and it’s only your own fault if you ever get bored.” About 10 years ago, Jay read an article about chainsaw sculpting. He couldn’t quite place his finger on why it sounded so appealing to him. Being at a loss to explain your attraction to something is the most certain way of knowing that you genuinely love it, however, so Jay spent the better part of that day in his driveway with an old log and an even older chainsaw. Jay first sculpted a bear, which seems by and large the preferred subject of chainsaw sculptors around the country. “I can’t really tell you why they’re bears so often,” Jay explained. “It might be because logs translate best into their blocky shapes, or that their fur is just the right texture for a chainsaw to sculpt. It’s probably mostly because people like bears.” Jay immediately found chainsaw sculpting to be a fun and relaxing pastime. Possessing a newly hewn bear felt good as well. Soon Jay’s lawn was home to a troop of bears, eagles, and game fish, a regular wood menagerie, and his neighbors took note. “I didn’t plan on selling my art when I started doing this,” said Jay. “But pretty soon people were knocking on my door, asking if they could bring one of my animals home with them. Word of mouth spread around after that, and I became Fargo’s go-to guy for chainsaw art. I made a website, started taking my sculptures to art shows, and now I’ve got a nice sideline to my contracting business.” “In all this time, I’ve never had a mishap,” said Jay. “I wear kevlar pants and take things slow. I have cut myself a few times, but that was only when the saw wasn’t running. You have to keep those blades razor sharp in order to get the fine details.”

I did once sculpt a paddlefish for a man who had just caught one and brought it to me for inspiration. I put it on the snowbank when I was finished with it, and quickly forgot about it. The paddlefish reminded me that he was there in the spring by turning into a stinky mess. My wife loved that.” “Logs are different than other mediums because they change as they age,” Jay explained. “Even though I dry my logs for a year or two, they’re always going to retain a little moisture. In addition to sculpting cuts, every piece I make gets a release cut right along the line where I see it’s most likely to split. That drives most of the splitting toward the back of the sculpture, but even with that precaution all log sculptures are going to chip and crack a little with time. I believe that only adds to
