When I was seven years old, I received a green parakeet for Christmas. I don’t recall having ever asked for a parakeet. Mature for my age, I had likely wanted something more practical, specifically The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening for the Nintendo Game Boy.

But I got the bird, whom I named Ralph. Ralph’s credits were his festive plumage, ability to squawk very loudly, and habit of tip tapping on his perch while the radio played. His demerits were his penchant for spitting seeds as far as they could go, fondness for night squawking, and unrelenting need for more and more newspaper pages. After a couple months of his tenure, my parents decided that Ralph’s work was no longer needed. Ralph was resituated to the nearby convalescent home to entertain its residents, where very much in spite of the spirit of convalescence

When Kyle Hoselton’s father came to him and suggested that

reindeer, Kyle didn’t ask why. Rather, he asked “Why not?” This is known as the laid-back approach to life. The Hoselton men agreed to the plan and went out and got their first three does: Maggie, Reba (as in McEntire, but no relation), and a lovely piebald named Panda. They found their new bulbous nosed

company very much. “They’re happiest when it’s cold out,” said Kyle. “They frolic when they find the weather right for it, stamping around their pen and throwing their heads around. We have a shady patch of field that always holds on to the last bit of snow every year. They way they all gang up on eachother to lie on it, it’s like a giant game of Twister. When it’s hot out, they’re much more content in the shade.” “They’re playful,” Kyle continued. “Once I was in the pen, fixing a piece of fence or something, and I kicked a ball that happened to be in there out of the way. One of the deer booked past me, caught it, and kicked it back. I never thought soccer could be in the reindeer vocabulary.”

The little kids often ask me if my reindeer can fly. I tell them that I don’t know -- that I’m always sleeping on Christmas Eve, so I couldn’t say if they do.” To this day Kyle isn’t certain what initially drove his father’s line of thinking, but he doesn’t regret its outcome -- Reindeer Ranch in Drayton, North Dakota is thriving, because demand for the beasts is rising. Kyle wants to grow his herd to a thousand head within the next five years, and then start shipping them out to other people who want to keep them as pets, or to show during Christmas. Do you see the future as I do? A thousand reindeer, each cocoa-colored and adorned with a saucy set of antlers, all tramping around Kyle’s ranch like a small army ready to be split into invading forces for missions to far away lands. Everybody loves donuts Let’s eat just one or two - Matt “Chainsaw” Chaney Choosing a name is arguably the most important part of starting a new business. A great name will tell your customers what you do, while at the same time instilling confidence in your services. Many entrepreneurs take a direct approach when naming their businesses. “Ernie’s Pizza” in Philadelphia, for example, tells you two things: That there is a man named Ernie, and that he nearly certainly has pizza. Kevin and Tina Cavanagh, however, bucked the trend of conventionality when they opened their donut shops in Bismarck and Mandan. Why name their donut shops after the least desirable part of a bear, especially when the bear possesses a part for which a type of donut is already named? “The old cowboys had colorful slang for food,” explained Kevin. “They called whiskey ‘antifogmatic,’ beans ‘whistle berries,’ and bacon ‘overland trout.’ In that vein, they would call donuts ‘bearscat.’ We figured that would be a fun and silly name for our donut shops, while at the same time an homage to our roots.”

E X P LO R E D OW N TOW N In that spirit, Bearscat Bakehouse is a traditional kind of donut shop, just a simple layout decorated with Western artwork and antiques brought back from the owners’ family farms in Montana. Big glass windows provide views for rows and rows of beautiful donuts, all waiting to be taken to good homes. “Our most popular donut has always been the Bearscat itself, one look at which will explain where its name comes from,” said Kevin. “We make Long Johns, maple glazeds, old fashioneds, jelly donuts, and all the other classics that donuts owe their popularity to. We also make a few less conventional ones, like our key lime pie donut in the summertime. Our Elvis donut has chocolate, peanut butter, banana, and bacon, just like the King liked. We once catered an Elvis impersonator’s banquet in Medora with a huge custom order of those.” “When we took over from the former owner, they were serving previously frozen donuts, and they were overextending themselves by offering too many different things -- you can’t make a turnover on Monday only to sell it on Thursday. To excel, we knew we had to just focus on making donuts, and making them really well. But donuts are a finicky food. If you do a bit too much of one thing or a bit too little of another to one, you probably couldn’t even rightly call it a donut anymore. It took us a lot of practice and guidance to master the art, but now we’re proud to make what we believe are the best donuts in the area.” “Do you want to know the secret to making great donuts? This year’s most definitive performance of classic Christmas songs comes from Bill Sorensen and the Theodore Roosevelt Medora Foundation of Medora, ND, a transcontinental rail line town founded in 1883. Medora has held onto their rugged frontier roots to this day, and still looks like a place that Tuco and the Man with No Name would ride into. They are home to the historic Rough Riders Hotel, named in honor of Teddy Roosevelt’s regiment in the Spanish-American War. The town also features several other points of historic interest including the North Dakota Cowboy Hall of Fame. They are best known for their Medora Musical, an Old Western act that draws over 110,000 in attendance annually.
The show was founded by former Bismarck mayor and long-time performer Bill Sorensen, who bounced back from throat cancer in 2016 to resume emceeing the Medora Musical, his labor of love. Bill does a little magic, gives historical context to the musical numbers, and keeps the evening true to Medora’s 54 years of wholesome Western performances. The cast of A Magical Medora Christmas is comprised by other longstanding performers from Medora’s musical tradition. Job Christenson, the director of Bismarck’s Sleepy Hollow Theatre, joins talented vocalist and host of the Medora Gospel Brunch Emily Walter to sing holiday classics of recent and old, including Silent Night, White Christmas, Jingle Bells, and a Badlands rendition of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah. The duo are joined by Jason Mason, who starred as Jerry Lee Lewis in the 2010 Tony Award winning musical Million Dollar Quartet. The Broadway performer plays the piano, guitar, and ukulele, and certainly knows how to stir up a

When dogs first teamed up with mankind, a certain informal agreement was struck: That we would always have one another’s backs, no matter how cold the winters might be, no matter how few mammoths were available to hunt, through thick and thin -- with a lot of thin, to be sure. While harsh winters and mammoth deficits are no longer as disastrous to our survival as they once were, we must still have the dogs’ backs, because the nature of an agreement is that it does not change depending on the circumstances. (Cats have their own deal with mankind: They will be fed, petted, played with, given furniture to sleep on, and loved, while in exchange they will do whatever they please. It is a somewhat more lopsided arrangement than what dogs made with us, but cats are clever animals and they very likely meant it to be that way. Nevertheless, a deal is a deal.) There is a local group of people working very hard to ensure that we honor our primordial pacts. The Central Dakota Humane Society has operated their no-kill shelter in Mandan since 1994. Thanks to their volunteers’ tireless efforts and the support of the local community, they have so far taken in nearly 6,000 animals who would otherwise have had to live on the streets. “We stand by to take in animals who need us, as space allows,” said Sue Buchholz, shelter director of the Central Dakota Humane Society. “We give them food, shelter, medical care, and love, and keep them for as long as it might take to find their forever homes. We’re blessed to be able to do what we do. We just wish we weren’t so busy all the time! “Adopting a rescue animal is a very rewarding experience. While I would never speak ill of purebreds, mixed breeds have a unique vigor which gives them a lovely energy. Rescue animals are also extremely appreciative of their new surroundings. Immigrants to Dakota fought tooth and nail against every adversity imaginable. In spite of the land’s inhospitableness, they did better than merely survive -- rather, they prospered, and today we enjoy the fruits of their labor. Buckstop Junction pays tribute to our forebears’ unrelenting efforts to tame this land by preserving their original efforts at it. That they have saved and consolidated such treasures as The Lewis Hotel, the Bethel Lutheran Church, and the 1st State Bank of McClusky for all to see and enjoy is emblematic of our reverence for those who came before us. Buckstop Junction is open seasonally so all may go and see.
