Winter is very beautiful in the Fargo area, when every new snowfall blankets the town in nice white fluff. Snow is never pretty when it’s covering your driveway and sidewalks, however, as no one looks forward to having to do the hard work of shoveling early in the morning lest they be late for something. Fortunately, Fargo Snow is standing by so you never have to think about shoveling snow again!

Fargo Snow’s fast and complete service has very rightly earned them their place as the area’s number one residential snow removal provider. They’ve mastered every facet of their craft over the course of their 11 years in business, and are absolutely without equal when it comes to what they offer.

Fargo Snow presents a variety of options to their customers. When you sign up, you can choose whether you would have a state of the art snowblower arrive early in the morning after 1” or 2” of snowfall. Furthermore, you may opt to have only your driveway cleared, or your sidewalks and path up to your doorstep cleared off as well. Fargo Snow’s dependability makes them top notch as well -- Fargo Snow’s operators work every day of the week, all winter long, so you’ll never be set back once as the result of a snowfall.

Fargo Snow represents the cutting edge of what technology has to offer the snow removal industry. Their snowblowers are not only so quiet that most customers don’t even realize when they’re in their driveways, but also remove snow in such a way that it won’t accumulate to become an unattractive icy mass come springtime. Fargo Snow’s technology doesn’t end with their snowblowers, either. They utilize GPS to direct their fleet of equipment as efficiently as possible, and maintain their Facebook page so that their customers can know exactly when their houses will be next to receive service. Again, no other snow removal service in the Fargo area comes close to offering nearly as much as Fargo Snow does.

S P OTLIGHT When the Anderson brothers learned to ski in the late 70s, they so fell in love with the sport that they resolved it wouldn’t do until everyone else loved it too. To the enterprising brothers this meant building their own ski resort, a feat they were able to achieve thanks to the fortuitous placement of an unusually steep slope in nearby Kensington, MN, just 90 minutes southeast of Fargo. They first opened for business in 1980, and have enjoyed inviting people from across the tri-state area to shred the slopes at Andes Tower Hills ever since.

by David Scheller

It ought not to come as a shock to learn that alpine sports are incredibly difficult to pull off without snow, and anyone who has ever skied knows all too well the gut-wrenching sound it makes when you go over a rock. Thoroughly aware of snow’s necessity for skiing, the Andersons invested in a state of the art heavy duty snowmaking system a few years back, so good conditions for skiing at Andes Tower Hills are no longer left to the discretion of the heavens.

Andes Tower Hills has three chairlifts to take skiers and snowboarders to the beginnings of their trails, the longest of which spans a quarter mile. For those who’ve not yet learned the sport, or the technique of mounting a moving chairlift for that matter, they’ve got a bunny slope with a magic carpet lift as well. If you’re new to skiing or snowboarding, the resort has dedicated instructors who’ll have you turning on dimes in no time.

S P OT L I G HT Andes Tower Hills caters to a far broader audience than the downhill crowd! For those who’d favor a different method of navigating the slopes, the resort offers a tubing hill complete with its own lift. Barriers are installed to separate the lanes there, so that your kids needn’t learn a terrible lesson in physics by colliding with an incoming neighbor.

The resort has 800 acres devoted solely to crosscountry skiing, comprising approximately 12 miles of trails. They also accommodate people who favor the fat tire bicycle, with a trail dedicated just for that novel contraption. The Anderson brothers are family men, and as such have designed Andes Tower Hills with family outings in mind. The resort has a wholesome atmosphere, like something you’d glean from a Christmas card, with rosy cheeked toddlers wobbly careening down the hillside toward their beaming parents, grandmothers clutching for dear life as they tube back to flat ground, and a general air of chumminess perfectly becoming of

We have a shady patch of field that always holds on to the last bit of snow every year. They way they all gang up on eachother to lie on it, it’s like a giant game of Twister. When it’s hot out, they’re much more content in the shade.” “They’re playful,” Kyle continued. “Once I was in the pen, fixing a piece of fence or something, and I kicked a ball that happened to be in there out of the way. One of the deer booked past me, caught it, and kicked it back. I never thought soccer could be in the reindeer vocabulary.”

Since they first opened their doors for business nine years ago, Nick’s Auto Sales has made quite a name for themselves in the Fargo-Moorhead community. The locally owned dealership hasn’t relied on flashy advertising campaigns or

marketing gimmicks to build their collection of quality pre-owned cars, trucks, and SUVs for sale from the four they started out with to the upward of 50 they now offer at any given time. Rather, the people at Nick’s focus on how they may best serve each and every one of their customers, one sale at a time. The value that Nick’s represents begins with how they source the pre-owned vehicles they offer. Nick’s keeps a team of professional and experienced buyers on staff to determinedly pursue the best deals they can find throughout the Midwest. Whether they find one at an auction, through a private seller, or by any other means available to them, the low prices for which they source great pre-owned vehicles translate to low prices for anyone who visits their lot in Moorhead.

As anyone who has ever bought a pre-owned vehicle in the past would attest, it can feel risky to inherit the former owner’s problems after the sale. No one knows this better than Nick’s -- but they would rather it not be that way. That’s why they have a full, state of the art automotive repair center on their premises where their team of career mechanics thoroughly inspect every vehicle upon its arrival. Once they have assessed a vehicle’s condition, they then go about providing every repair it needs to become as close to new again as possible. The result of their work is that when you buy a pre-owned vehicle from Nick’s you’re getting it in the best shape that it could possibly be in, from its brakes to its steering to its suspension to its tires.

Karen’s Kuchens shopdinelive.net

by David Scheller

Many people believe that museums, libraries, and

universities are the conservators of civilization’s most

precious treasures. This belief is incorrect, especially

when it comes to universities, institutions that have been

corrupted to their very cores as of late thanks to the influence of radical professors who believe, condemnably, that part of a student’s final grade should be based on attendance. Rather, they are grandmas who preserve the very best of what humanity has cooked up during our short time on earth. They know the dessert recipes. If you are of Italian descent, your grandma kept pastiera napoletana alive and well into your generation. If you have French in you, your grandma likely ensured that there could still be croquembouche. If your ancestors were Germans from Russia, the Russlanddeutsche, then your grandma may have been a scholar of kuchen. Karen Schwandt of Larimore, North Dakota is just that, and her mail order business Karen’s Kuchens keeps tradition’s fires crackling. A kuchen is a wonderful, buttery, cakey thing that is all fluff and sweetness. Karen’s repertoire of 70 variations on the delight includes banana creme, caramel rhubarb, German chocolate, juneberry raspberry, maple pecan, poppy seed, black

E X P LO R E D OW N TOW N Red River Lanes is one of Fargo’s original sporting institutions, owned and operated by three generations of fathers and sons since 1959. The Jones family, who hail from the north side of Fargo, have always endeavored to keep their alley authentic to the bowling experience -- but never at the cost of letting their fine 20 lane establishment fall behind the times. After their latest renovation three years ago, Red River Lanes has earned the distinction of being the most modern bowling center in town. Their overhaul includes new furniture, new carpeting, and above all the exciting and advanced BES X scoring system. This marvel integrates state of the art computer technology with the beloved sport to create an altogether novel experience. BES X is a great way to engage new bowlers who may be put off by the sport’s somewhat inaccessible scoring system. Kids love games like Monster Factory, where the pins they knock down determine the appearance of a cartoon imp that is created for them on screen. Best of all, they get to take their creation home with them! Bowlers of all ages love YouToons, where the scoreboard’s animations are augmented with actual photos of themselves to create funny cartoons in between frames. These are particularly entertaining for parties, and a great way to gently rib the boss during a corporate outing. Of course, all the technological advancements in the world wouldn’t amount to a hill of beans if Red River Lanes’ experience omitted those central elements of every great game of bowling: food and drink. The on-site Slammers Sports Bar takes care of all that with their fortifying athlete’s menu of burgers, wings, and more. Their Turbochef oven fires to 800 degrees so they can bake a whole pizza in only five minutes. Try one of their pizzas of the month, a showcase for their kitchen’s creativity that in the past has brought the world beauties like the Sheboygan, a cheese and beer brat extravagance.

How nice it is that we all have the same soundtrack just one time a year, even if we all return to our respective Keith Urban, Metallica, and Drake niches come December 26th. This year’s most definitive performance of classic Christmas songs comes from Bill Sorensen and the Theodore Roosevelt Medora Foundation of Medora, ND, a transcontinental rail line town founded in 1883. Medora has held onto their rugged frontier roots to this day, and still looks like a place that Tuco and the Man with No Name would ride into. They are home to the historic Rough Riders Hotel, named in honor of Teddy Roosevelt’s regiment in the Spanish-American War. The town also features several other points of historic interest including the North Dakota Cowboy Hall of Fame. They are best known for their Medora Musical, an Old Western act that draws over 110,000 in attendance annually.

The show was founded by former Bismarck mayor and long-time performer Bill Sorensen, who bounced back from throat cancer in 2016 to resume emceeing the Medora Musical, his labor of love. Bill does a little magic, gives historical context to the musical numbers, and keeps the evening true to Medora’s 54 years of wholesome Western performances. The cast of A Magical Medora Christmas is comprised by other longstanding performers from Medora’s musical tradition. Job Christenson, the director of Bismarck’s Sleepy Hollow Theatre, joins talented vocalist and host of the Medora Gospel Brunch Emily Walter to sing holiday classics of recent and old, including Silent Night, White Christmas, Jingle Bells, and a Badlands rendition of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah. The duo are joined by Jason Mason, who starred as Jerry Lee Lewis in the 2010 Tony Award winning musical Million Dollar Quartet. The Broadway performer plays the piano, guitar, and ukulele, and certainly knows how to stir up a crowd. Chad Willow, the former associate director of the

“When I was very small, we celebrated Christmas,” said Morgan Putnam, a professional Santa Claus in North Dakota. “Later on, we didn’t. I had a...unique childhood, and a family with a lot of issues. That’s why I’ve always loved Christmas. It brings me back to a simpler time. “My first time putting on the red suit, I never saw it coming. I worked behind the desk at a hotel at the time. A local pharmacist was about to have his annual courtesy photo shoot with Santa event that year, but his regular Santa had to cancel at the last minute because he was sick or had to go to a wedding or something -- so I was asked to do it instead. “When you’re first asked to be Santa, it comes as kind of a shock. Even at my age, most men like to think they look like James Bond. Santa’s a bit of a stretch from that. But I figured, hey, I could at least order the suit online and see how it looked on me. If I didn’t like it, I’d have a Halloween costume at worst. To my surprise it looked great on me, so I helped out the pharmacist. I’ve never looked back. “Word got around that I was a natural Santa Claus, and before long I was visiting homes, businesses, malls, and even less conventional places like bars and reservations. The way I see it, it’s Santa’s job to go wherever the Christmas spirit belongs, which is everywhere. Not that I’d ever compare myself to Him, but if Christ could take the trouble to bring his ministry to the east, then the least I can do is spend a few more hours in the car to go wherever Santa is needed.
