the snow on cross-country skis and snowmobiles, terrorizing fish who were lulled into a false sense of security by the thick sheet of ice they had thought protected them from our baited hooks, and cursing through our teeth as we desperately try to rake that one inaccessible part of the roof where the ice always dams. Who says the Midwest isn’t a font of fun in the wintertime? Too much fun in the outdoors this time of year can be wearisome, however, which is why this issue of

Bismarck’s automotive transponder key fob headquarters! “Some lines of work haven’t changed in years,” said Ken Hoff, the proprietor of Warren's Locks & Keys. “Not to say that the guy changing oil at a garage has an easy job, but he’s still reaching for the same half inch wrench that he did on the day when he first started out. The locksmithing business doesn’t give you that luxury. If you keep using the same technology and equipment that you did even a few years ago -- if you fall behind one gear -- you’re going to find yourself out of luck pretty quickly.” Ken’s industry has been marked by relentless innovation since he started out in 1993, but it was not only by constantly investing in the most cutting edge equipment, and regularly attending classes on his trade, that he made Warren's Locks & Keys the Bismarck area’s premier locksmithing business. Solving a murder mystery in real life is no fun at all. You’ve got to investigate the crime scene, gather clues, interview witnesses, weigh motives, get a warrant, and finally make an arrest. You’re tripped up all along the way by annoying obstacles like habeas corpus, the Fifth Amendment, and relentless dockside shootouts and high-speed car chases through farmers’ markets. On top of all that, even the most meticulous detective risks having all their work undone during trial by some hotshot lawyer in a sharkskin suit. Don’t you wish you could be involved in a murder mystery without the hard work, danger, and, above all, actual murder? That’s exactly the pleasure which Jest Murder Mysteries provides, all the satisfying accusatory finger wagging without having to replace the carpet afterward. If Sherlock Holmes had Jest Murder Mysteries, he’d have stuck to playing violin. Jest was founded by writer, actor, and director Randy Manning in St. Louis back in 1999. He had cut his teeth on some other murder mystery shows, learned what gelled and what didn’t in such a specialized production, and decided he could put on the ultimate one. So he did, and his specialized troops are now based in 15 cities and travel the country to put on dinner shows. Randy’s daughter, Leslie Franklin, has just taken over Jest and continues its whimsical business as Randy envisioned it. Jest works like this: You pick the venue (which Jest will recommend, if you like), arrange dinner, and invite your guests. Then you pick which show you’d like, be it Bullets in the Bathtub, a mobster and flapper speakeasy romp, Death of Blackheart, a pirate hostage fantasy, or any one of their other themed productions. Jest will then ship out the actors needed to turn what otherwise might have been just another perfunctory feedbag affair into an interactive theater experience which your guests will remember for the rest of their lives, far more so than anything else accompanied by green beans with slivered almonds that they’ve experienced before. Be certain, these aren’t the kind of murder mysteries which Agent Starling and Doctor Lecter would tackle together. They’re funny, improv-driven spectacles carried out by experienced stage actors. Jest’s performers include the alumni of plays and shows including The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Hairspray, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and Monk. They adopt characters like Squint Leastwood,

Up until recently the only ways you could experience escaping from a room were by playing video games or going to prison. Video games are by the far more preferable of the two -- I’ll take tapping buttons in the comfort of my living room over two decades of carving a tunnel through solid concrete using nothing but a soup spoon any time. The explosive popularity of escape rooms, however, has opened up a entirely new avenue to enjoy such a challenge. In them, you are locked in a room themed after some intriguing scenario and given only a single instruction: leave. With just an hour to accomplish that mission you must frantically observe your surroundings, paw around for clues and items that you can use to manipulate the environment, and, with nothing but your profound insight and the barking input of your friends,

We volunteer our time to conduct classes during the spring, summer, and early fall right before hunting season. One of our members, Lee Hetletved, is a level four USA Archery archery coach and instructor, which is the highest rank one of our members has ever achieved. He is intimate with the same style that an Olympic level competitor would use, and has worked with all of our trainers extensively to make the programs we offer that much better as a whole.” Nishu is open to the public three days a week from December through April, and their highest level members receive key cards so they may access the indoor range practically any time they like. While I had Doug’s attention, I had to ask him my most pressing question concerning archery: whether the exploding arrow from Rambo II is real. “Sure, you can put explosive on an arrow,” explained Doug. “That’s how Bo and Luke blew up the outhouse on The Dukes of Hazzard. We don’t use those at Nishu, though.”

Although it had started out as a legitimate sport back in the 1930s, in the decades that followed roller derby gradually devolved into the female equivalent of the WWE. Scripted fights, fishnet stockings, and miniskirts which doubled as scientific studies into how many sequins a square inch of fabric could support before erupting under its own sparkliness took priority over athleticism, and the outcomes of the matches were often predetermined. Roller derby experienced something of a renaissance last decade, however. The showmanship angle with its stockings and sequins has endured, as have the athletes’ funny stage names like “Honey Basher” and “Princess Cut” -- but the aggression, and the results of each bout for that matter, are very real indeed. When Rena Mehlhoff, who now skates as Anne Thrax, joined BismarckMandan’s very own roller derby team the BisMan Bombshellz in 2010, she did so simply because she saw the new team’s sign-up poster and thought that it sounded like fun. “I never played sports when I was younger,” said Rena, “so it’s weird that I was drawn to a full contact one. The physical competition really makes you grit your teeth and bear it, and giving and taking hits makes you tougher

outside of the arena as well. Who would have thought that I’d love it so much? “I’m only 5’2”, so my job is more to slow down the other team’s skaters by getting in their way. Fortunately our team has women who are a lot bigger and stronger than me to deal out the pain. Of course, you can’t just beat the tar out of people indiscriminately in roller derby. You’ve got to hit below the shoulder and above the knee, the back is off limits, and you can’t trip people. Our team appreciates going home from bouts with the same number of collective teeth that we started with. “Although men compete in roller derby too, it’s mostly a women’s sport because our bodies’ geometries are better suited for it. Our hips give us the lower center of gravity that’s perfect for keeping balance on skates, and we also use our hips to bump other players out of the way and score points.” This of course begs the important question: Just how is roller derby

It is the jammer’s job to lap opponents in order to score points; It is the blockers’ job to make this as difficult a feat for the opposing team’s jammer as possible, while at the same time helping their own. The whole thing can seem like an imbroglio at first, but after a couple of jams you’ll quickly see just what is going on. “After eight long years building this team up, we were finally accepted as a full member of the Women's Flat Track Derby Association last July,” Rena continued. “That means we can compete against other teams from around the world to increase our ranking on the global circuit. We’ve already squared off against teams from Montana, Nebraska, and even Canada. In addition to his other duties on the farm, the plantation foreman took it upon himself to make a giant batch of his signature barbecue sauce and slather it on a heap of ribs and quartered chickens to reward his men after a big crop had been harvested or some other important milestone had been achieved. Barbecue is the finest tool at a manager’s disposal to keep up morale. The plantation prospered. A committed saucier, Carry would also whip up big batches of the stuff for his 11 children, as well as anyone else in the neighborhood who would be drawn in by the smell of his barbecue. One of his children, Bill, took special note of his father’s sauce’s immense power to bring people together. That power would become his key inheritance from his father.

“My big moment of awakening came in eighth grade,” Travis continued. “I wanted my own hot rod more than anything in the world, but didn’t have much money for one. A friend and I went to the local junkyard, and there buried in the back was the most beautiful ‘65 Impala Super Sport I’d ever seen. I told the owner that I had a driver’s license, and he just kind of laughed at my enthusiasm. He told me that if I could find wheels for it, he’d let drag it home for $200. I was never more excited in my life.” Despite his parents’ protests, that old Impala became a fixture in their yard as Travis spent the next three years putting everything he had into it. He rebuilt its motor, transmission, and differential during shop class (where he racked up so many hours that he wound up teaching it by junior year), and landscaped the local body shop owner’s yard in exchange for a paint job. Although Travis eventually had to sell that Impala, his experience restoring it would never let him drive a stock vehicle ever again. After high school, Travis and his brother moved from the boonies to Bismarck. They worked together there at a Ford dealership, where Travis’ shop chops earned him a place as their sole accessory installer. He realized that he would better customize vehicles on his own, and in 1999 opened the first iteration of Dakota Kustomz.

In 2010, the custom bike market crashed thanks to declining interest and an overabundance of cheap knock-offs. That collapse hurt a lot of small custom shops across the country badly, including Travis’. He had

to shelf his ambition for a while as he worked as a construction foreman to make ends meet. That hiatus might have slowed Travis down, but it couldn’t stop his dream. He took a side job at his brother’s used powersports shop working on ATVs, UTVs, and snowmobiles, and before long Bismarck turned its attention back to his award winning work. In 2016 he sprang back into action and started Dakota Kustomz anew, ready to work on hot rods and custom vehicles and bikes once again. Within six months of reopening Travis was living his dream once more. “Everyday you have to set a goal,” said Travis. “Something to shoot for. Something to achieve. That's what I try to do. I may be 41 years old now, and not getting any younger, but I want to build an empire right here from Bismarck. People need to see that you don’t have to be from the coast or a big city to have vision. With the team I’m building up, and the great bikes and hot rods people in town are bringing us, I think I’ve got as good of a chance as anyone of doing that.”
