CONTENTS Hello,

Readers!

Winter is well underway in the Midwest, but we Midwesterners don’t mind one bit -- we haven’t made home in this inhospitable clime because our cans are made of candy, after all. This is the time of year when we engage ourselves by tearing around through the snow on cross-country skis and snowmobiles, terrorizing fish who were lulled into a false sense of security by the thick sheet of

4

ice they had thought protected them from our baited hooks, and cursing through our teeth as we desperately try to rake that one inaccessible part of the roof where the ice always dams. Who says the Midwest isn’t a font of fun in the wintertime? Too much fun in the outdoors this time of year can be wearisome, however, which is why this issue of

Craig Cohen must have needed a vivid imagination to conceive of the Keg and Case Market. The deserted Schmidt warehouse it’s now located in was riddled with graffiti, broken glass, and squatting birds when he bought it in 2014, but the entrepreneur saw the old building’s charm through all of that. Newly opened last September, it’s now a bustling 33,000 square foot community hub with a slew of

The second my friends and I entered Keg and Case we were knocked off our feet by the bouquet of bacon. This is the superlative way to begin a shopping experience. We were first drawn to Forest to Fork, a wild food grocer with an enormous glass cased mushroom farm right next to their booth. The mushrooms erupting from the shelved

sacks within were lit

colorfully, like they were enjoying their own private fungal discotech right in the middle of things. Worker B nearby has their own miniature apiary, also thoughtfully glassed off, but when we visited the bees must have been on important bee business elsewhere.

Shih Tzu Rescue of Minnesota

In the last issue of Shop.Dine.Live. we took a look at the rugged snow dogs of Adopt a Husky Minnesota. As this issue focuses on indoor entertainment, in it we will examine a somewhat daintier dog who is better suited for the comforts of the cozy fireplace and its nearby carpet. Don’t let their diminutive size fool you, though. The Shih Tzu, whose name in Chinese means “lion dog,” has a larger than life if not imperious presence. Put a Shih Tzu in any situation, and that situation will belong entirely to them with their charming underbite, long eyelashes, and enthusiastic snorts.

by David Scheller

Shih Tzu Rescue of Minnesota (STRMN) is a nonprofit that serves to save, rehabilitate, and rehome Shih Tzus who’ve been done some disservice during their lives. Whether they’ve been surrendered by their owner, left to fend for themself on the street (a great feat for a 10 pound dog), or put in any other circumstance not conducive to being a little Shih Tzu, STRMN will scoop them up, put them in a foster home, and invite people to come and adopt them so they may go to the aforementioned Valhalla of the cozy fireplace and its nearby carpet. Kristi Lehman is a lifelong Shih Tzu lover and STRMN volunteer who dedicates her time to her favorite breed’s welfare. “As small as they are, Shih Tzus defy the tiny dog stereotype,” explained Kristi. “They’re like big dogs in little bodies. They’re very curious and extroverted, and they’re reserved instead of snobby. They can be almost too smart for their own good at times, and have enormous personalities for such a small package.” “Shih Tzus can be a bit stubborn, but in an endearing way -it’s not like a dog who weighs as much as a bag of groceries can inconvenience you much, anyway,” Kristi continued. “But they still like to be the boss wherever they go. For instance, I give my Piper a snack at eight every day, to settle her stomach. Piper knows this, and no matter what’s going on or where we are at exactly eight she starts doing her characteristic Shih Tzu grumble at me until she’s gotten her snack.” “Shih Tzus are amazing lap dogs, and like nothing more than to be around you. If you’ve got a Shih Tzu, you’ve got a shadow. The tippy tap of Piper’s nails on the floor is like the soundtrack of my life.” “Believe it or not, Shih Tzus were bred to be watchdogs! I mean, you’d probably better not count on one as your last line of home defense, but whenever a Shih Tzu hears something out of the ordinary they’ll give you a couple of warning barks. They’ll then go back to being little lumps and let you take care of the rest.”

14

|

Back to Table of Contents

shopdinelive.net “One of the things I love most about Shih Tzus is how adaptable they are. STRMN takes in dogs who’ve come from absolutely horrible situations. When they’re rescued they may be afraid of any number of things like men, children, other dogs, and even the outdoors. But with some love and encouragement, nearly all of them overcome their pasts and learn to enjoy life. You can’t beat a Shih Tzu’s spirit.”

ARBOR LAKES MAPLE GROVE

“Because all of STRMN’s rescues are placed in foster homes, we get know each of their distinct personalities very well. That means when you come to us to adopt, we’ll know just which of our dogs are best suited for your lifestyle. We’ll guide you through the whole process, and you’ll be so happy with the addition of a charismatic Shih Tzu to your life!” STRMN is always looking for volunteers and fosters in addition to good homes for their Shih Tzus. While taking in a small pal only to see them leave one day may seem like a heartbreaker in the making, Kristi stresses how rewarding helping a Shih Tzu along their way to their perfect forever home feels. DOWNTOWN

EXPLORE

The Wells Fargo MPLS WinterSkate by David Scheller

Ice holds a particular attraction for Minnesotans. They fish on it, play hockey on it, dance on it -- I’ve even seen some of them put it in their drinks. It’s not hard to understand the affinity, given that the entire state is enveloped in the stuff for nearly ten months out of the year. It’s only natural that we should have figured out everything fun that there is to do with ice. There used to be only two kinds of ice in downtown Minneapolis that you could go on: the ice on the river, which traversing is inadvisable because it’s on the river, and that on the streets which humbles even our most eminent professionals as it sends them flailing to the ground. The mpls downtown council didn’t think this would do, so they partnered with the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board and with Wells Fargo’s generous help they brought about the Wells Fargo Mpls WinterSkate, downtown’s own skating rink in the heart of Loring Park. Wells Fargo Mpls WinterSkate is totally free -- all you need to do to enjoy downtown ice skating is to go to the rink, and if you don’t feel like lugging your skates all the way from home or haven’t got a pair you can use one of the 300 complimentary pairs kept onsite. Just go into the warming house, which is kept balmy thanks to the contribution of

MINNEAPOLIS BOULDERING PROJECT by David Scheller

What first struck me when I visited the Bouldering Project is that there are no ropes there. Each of the Bouldering Project’s members clambered around the towering walls’ outcroppings like bouncy vervet monkeys, with nothing to break their falls save for the thick, soft padding that spans the entire climbing area.

On my first attempt to climb the pier, I failed at the

whether my spine might in fact be snappable after all, until P.J. Hicks pulled me up. He advised that I take the shore route next time. This gutted me, so I put tooth and nail into my next climb. I made it, and in doing so completed my first problem.

Although many of the routes to the top overlap, they are color coded to distinguish them from one another as well as to indicate their difficulty. This begins with yellow, problems surmountable by the least limber newcomer, to white, problems which would give even the friskiest mountain goat pause. I especially enjoyed

There is little wonder why every other man and woman at the Bouldering Project look like their bodies were sculpted by Zeus. If you want to get buff, thumbing your nose at gravity is apparently the most direct path there. The Bouldering Project offers more than fast-paced climbing. They also have a full weight room with everything you could want to hoist, elliptical machines,

All of that makes the place an attractive gym for everyone around town, whether they would climb or not. “The Twin Cities don’t have a great abundance of natural bouldering destinations,” said Sean. “On top of that, our weather would make it pretty miserable to engage in this sport for a great part of the year. One of our owners is from here, so he was very proud to make bouldering available to his hometown all year long.” Whether you’re a devoted rock climber, a fitness connoisseur, or just want to try something exceptionally fun that’ll take your mind off the frozen expanse we’re all marooned in this time of year, the Minneapolis Bouldering Project is a marvelous place to go to. See it at 1433 West River Rd N in Minneapolis, or visit minneapolisboulderingproject.com to find out more.

HUGE IMPROV CLASS by David Scheller

I used to wait tables at a Buca di Beppo in Florida a hundred years ago. I had the tomato tie, the pocket protector, the hideous sneakers that wouldn't slip on wet tile floors, the whole nine yards. I worked there with a man named Mark, a big fella, affable, bags under his eyes, so sloppy that half his shirt was guaranteed dyed red from errant marinara by the end of every dinner shift. At a glance you’d expect Mark’s personal interests to be heavily dominated by the Miami Dolphins and beer, but instead Mark loved improv. “Life’s hard, Dave,” he told me once. “You never know what the hell it is you’re supposed to do around people. At least when you screw up at improv, you’re not going to wind up paying alimony.” I offered my girlfriend a slightly modified version of Mark’s explanation of improv in order to allay her anxiety that we might look silly at the class I’d signed us up for at HUGE Improv Theater.

shopdinelive.net Julie Ann Segal’s love for interior design is innate. When she was a little girl she was often at play arranging and rearranging the furniture in her room, and became distraught when her family’s cleaning lady moved even a pile of toys that she had carefully placed. This drive would continue on through highschool, with a young by David Scheller

Julie Ann seeing to it that only the most aesthetic blacklight posters should grace her bedroom.

“Even the smallest changes you make to your home can improve the flow of chi there.” When Julie Ann’s new roommate in freshman year of college moved in with decorations that upstaged her posters and bedding, her mother took her on a small shopping trip to help her to level the playing field. Over lunch afterward they discussed Julie Ann’s long-standing flair for decorating, and that there is far more to the practice than simply rearranging furniture. Something clicked for Julie Ann then. She understood just how dearly she loved design, so switched majors from business to interior design through the art department and set about learning just what makes space beautiful. “I had always understood that our living space impacts us,” explained Julie Ann, now the president of Metro Interiors. “Shortly after I began working in the field of interior design, one of my biggest revelations was that there is already a whole philosophy behind that notion: feng shui, an ancient Chinese art which holds that there is a universal energy, or chi, which is all around us. Depending on how you design your home and arrange its furnishings you can channel chi to improve your life in profoundly positive ways. I help my clients to engage this chi not only so they may have genuinely beautiful places to live in, but also to reap benefits from the universe around them. “Even the smallest changes you make to your home can improve the flow of chi there. For example, keeping your possessions in good repair will remove a great deal of frustration out of your life which would have otherwise carried over into other aspects of it. Your front door should be a different color from everything else in your house, because that draws in greater chi -- I recommend red, a color that nourishes love. Sharp angles, known as poison arrows, can hinder the flow of energy throughout your home, so you should consider the contours you’re creating whenever you rearrange your furniture.

shopdinelive.net “Feng shui is an incredibly deep theory. It revolves around a map called the bagua, the nine areas of which each correspond to a different part of your life. Whether you would pursue fame, love, creativity, knowledge, or some other path to happiness, feng shui provides color schemes and underpinning layouts for your home that will help you along it. Although its philosophy is invaluable to her work, feng shui is hardly the limit of Julie Ann’s expertise when it comes to beautifying her clients’ living spaces. As an interior designer she is an artist in full, and can design entire rooms in drawing so that she may convey her visions for space before proceeding to the next phase. Her Metro Interiors also provides all the materials needed to bring her concepts to fruition including furniture, lighting, flooring, and window treatments, as well as the contractors needed to install them.

shopdinelive.net I am a huge video game nerd. The affliction began when my grandma gave me a Game Boy with the officially licensed Home Alone game for Christmas in 1993. Navigating a tiny, digital Macaulay Culkin around a labyrinthe while desperately trying to prevent a tiny, digital Joe Pesci from breaking his neck was the most fun I’d ever had, and I can still hear the game’s 20 second loop of jangly music playing in my head whether I would like to or not. I’d go on to get more advanced machines, ones capable of displaying a spectrum greater than four shades of green (old Game Boy games look like ants swarming beneath a layer of creamed spinach), which gobbled up plenty of my childhood. Unfortunately I’ve now got a lot of responsibilities, and like some kind of loser I have to do things like work and cook dinner and call my mother on Mother’s Day instead of playing video games by David Scheller
