Book Club

by Liz Green, Committee Chair

The PJTC Book Club will not be meeting in August. Our next meeting will be on Thursday, September 10, at 7:30 PM, location to be announced. Here is the schedule: September 10, 2015 - Being Mortal, by Atul Gawande. Doctor and author Atul Gawande tackles the hardest challenge of his profession: how medicine cannot only improve life but also what matters in the end. October 8, 2015 - The Golem and the Djinni, by Helene Wecker. In a chance meeting between mythical beings, The Golem and the Djinni takes readers on a dazzling journey through cultures in turnof-the-century New York. Books are available at Vroman’s at a 20% discount. We are listed as the PJTC Book Club.

Monday August 17, 1:30 – 3:30 PM by Debbie Guest, PJTC Sisterhood President

The Women’s League for Conservative Judaism is the International organization of Sisterhoods of the Conservative Movement. On Monday afternoon, August 17, from 1:30 to 3:30 in the Social Hall, PJTC Sisterhood is hosting a Summer Workshop designed by Women’s League. Attendees will learn how to access the abundant resources offered on its website. All dues-paying Sisterhood members may tap into the diverse website which provides many and varied guides to personal and group growth. These creative ideas are not limited to Sisterhood, but can be applied to personal lives and group dynamics in general. If you have not yet responded to Carol Mills’ invitation to renew your annual PJTC Sisterhood membership, you may do so at that time. (Dues are not required to attend this event, but after you see what is available to paid-up members you may want to join!) Our new Pacific Southwest Region President, Brenda Katz, is traveling from her home in Las Vegas to meet as many of her LA-based constituents as possible. We are delighted to have her in Pasadena. We will be led step-by-step in exploring the website by Marilyn Berkowitz, a former PSW Region President who is currently an International Vice President, Consulting Services Chair for Women’s League. Please bring a wi-fi enabled device with you, such as your laptop, smart phone, or tablet. Other support representatives from Women’s League will address needs specific to Sisterhood. The Region Torah Fund VP, Rhoda Lipsig, will be there to discuss the new campaign and help you understand the “why” behind our commitment to Torah Fund. She will be bringing the new pins with her as well. The event is free and open to all who wish to attend. Light refreshments will be served. RSVP by Monday, August 10 to Debbie Guest, debbie.j.guest@ gmail.com or (626)355-9672.

Sunday, August 2 10:00 AM Come prepared to scrub, polish, sweep, prune, plant, paint, and have lots of fun with Temple family and friends as we beautify PJTC for the upcoming High Holy Days. All volunteers, pre-teen and up, will be appreciated.

Sisterhood College Outreach Committee by Terry Meng, Committee co-chair

Is your high school graduate heading away this fall? Attention PJTC families with first year college-bound children! The College Outreach Committee of Sisterhood is collecting names and addresses of high school graduates leaving home for the first time. Even though our young people will be away from home, our Sisterhood tradition is to continue PJTC’s connection to them by sending them Jewish holiday boxes to share with their new friends and community. In order to be eligible, (1) the families are members of PJTC, (2) the student is attending a program/school away from home for the first time (Students who graduated in past years but are just now leaving home are welcome!), and (3) the student must have a permanent USA mailing address for the year. We encourage all families to participate. Please email me at terrymeng58@att.net as soon as you can (and hopefully by September 1) with the following information: Parents’ name, address, and phone numbers; student’s name, mailing address, and phone number and the student’s date of birth. We look forward to hearing from you. The FLAME
