LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

The theme of this issue of EXAMEN can best be summed up with the phrase, “we rise by lifting others”. During the Mission moment at our November Board of Directors meeting, Keyshawn Carr, Class of 2016 and an Assistant Football Coach, shared the following: “If I didn’t come to Pius XI, I wouldn’t be the man sitting in front of you today. I came to Pius XI to amplify my strengths”.

Indeed, that is what our hard-working faculty and staff do day in and day out. They help everyone in our care identify and amplify their strengths to become the best versions of themselves so that they, in turn, can use those strengths to serve others. In this issue, we introduce our new Assistant Principal LaKendra Brown, as well as a few teachers who are sharing their strengths with our students.

Every day we hear incredible stories of how our alumni are lifting others up through the work they do and causes they champion, including their alma mater, Pius XI. On October 1, more than 20 Popes-owned businesses and talented artists helped us debut our very first Popesfest, showcasing the diverse talents of our graduates while raising money for the Popes Fund, which supports the greatest needs of our community. It was a beautiful celebration with the Pius XI community and we can’t wait for next year’s Popesfest. We are so grateful for all the people who keep Pius XI in their hearts and help amplify the work we’re doing through their generous support, including the Meinerz Family, this year’s recipient of the Walter Yakich Faithful Servant Award. The deep dedication to Pius XI that began with their parents, Archie and Viola, and continues to this day is present in so many ways throughout campus, from the fieldhouse to the science wing. Inside this issue, we highlight the many generous donors whose gifts inspire us to carry out the important mission of Pius XI. A listing of donors who gave $250 or more for the year ended June 30, 2022, is located on pages 13 - 23.

Finally, we pay special tribute to Mr. Dick Fischer ‘61, who dedicated his life’s work to amplifying the strengths of the young men and women who passed through Pius XI. His presence is deeply missed, but his spirit lives on in so many remarkable ways.

As I reflect on all of the good works in 2022 and how our community has come together, I am reminded of the following verse: “Therefore, encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing” (1 Thessalonians 5:11). For all the past encouragement and support, I sincerely thank you. As we march into 2023, I look forward to witnessing the many ways our Pius XI community will continue to rise as we do the important work of lifting each other up.

LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL RYAN KRIENKE

The first semester of the 2022-2023 school year is almost in the books and I’m happy to share that this year—my second at Pius XI—has seen a return to normalcy in many ways, for both our students and the greater community. We’ve been able to come back together in ways we know and love, while also embracing new ways to grow together.

After two and half years of adjusting schedules to accommodate needs related to the pandemic, we have returned to the modular schedule that is familiar to decades of Popes. Current students are learning how to use the schedule to make the best of their Pius XI experience, taking advantage of resource opportunities and options that enhance their academic experience.

We’ve also seen support for our Performing Arts come back in full force with sold out performances of our fall play You on the Moors Now and the Dance Department’s fall show An Evening of Dance: Baby I’m a Star. There’s some excellent theater, choral music, band, orchestra, and dance performances planned for later in the school year. I invite you to join us for a show or two!

This summer, we welcomed LaKendra Brown to the school’s Leadership Team. LaKendra brings a background in special education and social emotional education to her role as Assistant Principal. She has already become a tremendous asset to my team in a short amount of time. You can read more about LaKendra on page 5 in this issue of EXAMEN.

After the challenges of the past few years, Campus Ministry has seen a renewed energy with a focus on retreat experiences to foster faith formation and connections, as well as the implementation of new service requirements for graduation. You can read more about Campus Ministry on page 8 of this issue.

Academically, we’re working to help all students reach their highest potential, by providing supportive programs and challenging courses. Our Writing Center, which follows a model similar to Marquette University, is home to 15 trained student tutors who provide assistance to students across the school on everything from class assignments to college essays. More than 12 Advanced Placement (AP) classes are offered this year and a newfound partnership with Milwaukee Area Technical College offers AP Biology for concurrent credit. Two classes are currently offered for college credit with the goal of adding more with increased partnerships.

As 2022 draws to a close, I’d like to thank the Pius XI community for your support and engagement this year, as our student body and loyal alumni are our greatest assets. I invite you to stay connected and look forward to seeing everything we will achieve together in 2023.

STAFF SPOTLIGHT LAKENDRA BROWN, ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL

MEET LAKENDRA BROWN, PIUS XI’S NEW ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL.

“I am the new Assistant Principal at Pius XI. I serve students, families, faculty, and staff in several capacities with some of my primary responsibilities in the areas of Academic Interventions, Counseling, Assessments, Title Services, and Special Studies.”

Why Pius XI? What drew you and your family to want to be here?

“Before stepping into this new role, I was already a member of the Pius XI community as a parent. My husband and I chose Pius XI for our daughter three years ago because we value the student diversity and the “Pius XI Vibe” that enables children to grow academically, socially, and emotionally in a safe environment.”

How have your previous experiences helped you become successful in your role here?

“My previous service in the public school system included roles as a regular and special education teacher, mentor of new and aspiring teachers, professional development facilitator, and designated teacher in-charge. I evaluated children with suspected special education needs and helped lead school intervention teams. Additionally, I worked for a local university and supervised undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student teachers. All of these experiences, spanning 22 years, have contributed to my ability to successfully serve as the Assistant Principal at Pius XI.”

How have you helped facilitate the development of students at Pius XI?

“As a member of Pius XI’s Leadership Team, I assist in developing strategic plans to improve teaching and learning. In my role, I specifically focus on supporting students’ academic growth and development.”

Are there any programs or initiatives that you’re proud of since starting at Pius XI?

“Upon my arrival in July, I began working to redesign the policy of academic probation for students who are not meeting Pius XI’s academic expectations. The goal of the redesign was to more effectively identify barriers to student performance and progress and then to layer needed supports to aid improvement and success. The new policy, which begins with intervention, will continue to evolve to provide additional layers of support to our students.”

What do you enjoy most about working at Pius XI? What makes this experience unique for students and staff, in your opinion?

“I love the students and my daily interactions with them! We truly are blessed to work with really great kids in our community. I also enjoy working with the staff and faculty here. The diversity of our student body is one factor that contributes to the unique experience that is Pius XI. I am not speaking solely of ethnic diversity. Our students are diverse in so many ways, and their unique personalities, talents, and gifts make our community special. That doesn’t mean there aren’t challenges and everything is perfect; no school is without its challenges. We have work to do. We are committed. The students here at Pius XI will help lead the way, and I’m here to support them.”

TEACHER SPOTLIGHTS

ERIKA HANSEN & FRANK CRIVELLO

MEET ERIKA HANSON, WHO IS IN HER FIRST YEAR AS SPANISH TEACHER AND STUDENT COUNCIL ADVISOR AT PIUS XI.

What inspired you to begin teaching?

“I have always wanted to be a teacher. As a kid, when my siblings and I would play school, I was always the teacher. At the end of the school year, when my teachers would give away old textbooks or classroom materials, I would always take them home. I knew it was the right career for me because I love working with the students and helping them to be the best versions of themselves while being able to introduce them to the fun of learning another language.”

What drew you to want to work at Pius XI?

“I had a lot of friends who went to Pius XI and I only heard wonderful things. I was drawn to the ‘vibe’ the school gives off and to the opportunity to work with a diverse student body. I also was excited to be a part of a Catholic school as I previously worked at a public school and missed some of the special things about working in a Catholic school.”

What do you feel makes Pius XI a special place?

“It’s the unique and wonderful students that we have. They bring life and personality into the school and it is such a vibrant and positive community to be a part of.”

What do you enjoy most about teaching? What ignites your passion for doing this work?

“I enjoy most being able to watch students grow and learn. I am super passionate about teaching students a second language, but I am also passionate about pushing them to do things outside of their comfort zone so they take strides in their learning. I also love working with the students and getting to know them as people.”

What are some of your most unique lessons or activities in your classes that people should know about?

“In my classroom, we are focusing on reading to acquire the language right now. Students spend time at the beginning of class reading a book of their choice and then completing a short activity. In addition, my class is very project based. We play a variety of games that engage students in the content and students use creative freedom to complete projects to show what they have learned. We focus a lot on speaking in Spanish as well and students engage in a daily conversations with each other.”

MEET FRANK CRIVELLO, A 36-YEAR TEACHING VETERAN WHO IS IN HIS SECOND YEAR TEACHING MACROECONOMICS AT PIUS XI.

What inspired you to begin teaching?

“I never went to college thinking I’d be a teacher, but there were some great people along the way that encouraged me to look into education as a career.”

What drew you to want to work at Pius XI?

“The chance to focus on an advanced class at a very good high school. I wasn’t fit to sit on the couch all day when I retired in 2020.”

What do you feel makes Pius XI a special place?

“The students have been super. It also helps to have supportive colleagues.”

What do you enjoy most about teaching? What ignites your passion for doing this work?

“I enjoy how economics, especially macroeconomics, is so tied in with current events. The relevance of a class like this is easily applied to students’ day-to-day lives. I also enjoy teaching economics because it is so foreign as a subject to many students, yet so important to know how our economy operates on many different levels. To me, this is one of the biggest disconnects in secondary curriculums as taught today. Social studies classes that deal with history, political science, and economics are the building blocks of the next generation to become an informed electorate.”

What is one of the most unique lessons or activities in your class that people should know about?

“Analyzing the nuts and bolts of a business owned by a Pius XI alum (The Real Good Life - Maggie Joos ‘98). This has been a unique exercise for the students. Very real world with an expectation that students generate possible outcomes and strategies.”

6 EXAMEN

FIRST POPESFEST A SUCCESS

On October 1, Pius XI hosted the first annual Popesfest — a food, beer, music, and arts festival for parents, students, alumni, and the larger Milwaukee community. We’d like to extend a heartfelt ‘thank you’ to all the attendees, organizers, volunteers, sponsors, and alumni who made the event possible. We were ecstatic to see so many friendly and familiar faces dedicated to helping the school thrive so that our Popes are set up for success in the future.

Popesfest 2022 was a day of family fun that raised over $28,000 for the school, and celebrated our Popes-owned businesses, artists and makers, and entertainers.

In addition to delicious food and drinks from vendors such as Maxie’s, Egg & Flour, Broken Bat, Eagle Park, and more, local bands Time Out, Wonderful Bluffer, and Stray Voltage performed live music as guests indulged in many fun activities. Some lucky students even got to watch their teachers take a turn in the dunk tank!

We’re looking forward to next year - mark your calendars for Saturday, September 30, 2023!

CAMPUS MINISTRY FOSTERING FAITH, BUILDING COMMUNITY

Campus Ministry, under the Direction of Tom Holschuh, has seen a revitalization after two years of scaled-back activities in response to pandemic-related protocols.

With a focus on faith formation and service, Tom’s goal is to provide a welcoming place for students to grow together as a community. His room is open during resource mods and is often filled with groups of students who appreciate having time to connect and form friendships in a less structured environment. “Students get the opportunity to have conversations about spirituality and morality that might not otherwise happen,” noted Tom. “It also gives me the chance to develop relationships with groups of students, helping to form and guide the leaders in our school community”.

Service is now part of students’ required coursework for graduation and will result in each person completing 24 unique service experiences during their four years at Pius XI. Students are tasked with completing service in four different categories: family, community, vulnerable populations, and environmental, so that they can see the vast range of needs and ways to make a difference.

Beyond making it a requirement, Tom has gone to great lengths to build service into students’ lives on a more fundamental level. On almost a weekly basis, there are service opportunities offered during school hours at partner sites and the list of interested organizations is growing. “Offering experiences during the school day makes it easy and accessible, but it also requires our students to take responsibility for planning and prioritizing how they will meet the obligations they missed while they were out serving others,” commented Tom. “It’s an important life lesson in time management and helps these organizations on weekdays when they struggle to get volunteers”.

Retreats are another way Campus Ministry helps foster individual growth and strong community. As Tom says, “retreats allow students to step out of the normal daily routine to encounter Christ”.

Retreats are conducted throughout the year and are required for the freshmen and sophomore classes. Two optional Kairos retreats are offered for seniors and all students are invited to participate in the Christian Athlete Leadership Organization (CALO) overnight retreat in fall.

“A unique characteristic of Pius XI is the diversity in religious backgrounds and families. Retreats foster our Catholic students’ faith formation, but also provide for students of all faith backgrounds to come together, developing moral character for all,” said Tom. “It’s important that regardless of a student’s

spiritual background that we bring them in and offer value in personal and spiritual growth”.

In addition to service, retreats, and community-building opportunities, Tom is dedicated to planning engaging allschool masses and preparing the daily EXAMEN reflection that encourages our entire school community to pause, reflect, and pray.

CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF GIVING THE MEINERZ FAMILY

Earlier this year at the 2022 Commencement Ceremony, the Meinerz Family was presented with the Walter Yakich Faithful Servant Award, recognizing 50 continuous years of faithfully investing in the lives and futures of Pius XI students. The Faithful Servant Award is bestowed upon those who have dedicated themselves to using their God-given gifts and abilities in service to God and their community.

“Our family was incredibly touched to receive this year’s Walter Yakich Faithful Servant Award,” noted Scott Meinerz ‘72 who accepted the award on behalf of the family. “My seven siblings and I called Pius XI home over the span of nearly two decades. To be able to give back to the place that had such an incredible impact on all of us and enrich the experience for other Popes has been an honor”.

Archie and Viola Meinerz sent all eight of their children to Pius XI. They made their first donation to the school in 1972. Since that time, individual family members and their family foundation have invested more than $2.5 million in scholarships, programs, facilities, and opportunities. From the fieldhouse to the science wing to dozens of Meinerz Scholars, the family has made a positive and lasting impact on the community, including past and present Popes. A plaque in the fieldhouse lobby dedicated to Viola Meinerz reads, “Do a little better every day”. This very sentiment is built into our core value of Excellence, which states, “we hold ourselves and each other to the highest standard of performance and strive to do a little better every day so that we can each reach our unique and highest potential”.

“I think my time at Pius XI had everything to do with the person that I am today,” shared Leigh (Meinerz) Peterson ‘64. “It was strict, we learned respect, and we were held to high standards. I know those same standards are part of the core values that guide the school today.”

The following members of the Meinerz Family were recognized with the Walter Yakich Faithful Servant Award:

HONORING A LIFE OF SERVICE DICK FISCHER ‘61

How do you measure the life of a man who was seemingly larger than life? Is it in years served or games coached? Concessions sold or pregame speeches delivered? Geometry lessons taught or tutoring hours logged?

For Dick Fischer ‘61, it’s all these things and more. Mr. Fischer or “Mr. Pius”, as some would say, wore many different hats during his tenure here. From his beginnings as a studentathlete and member of Future Teachers of America, to coach, teacher, and fundraiser, Dick exemplified Pius’ core values of service and excellence in everything he did during his 60 plus years at Pius XI.

“His absolute passion and love for Pius XI is remarkable,” shared Joel Claassen who, as the new 6’5” teacher, was recruited by Dick to coach basketball on his first day in 1980. “Everywhere you walk in that building, there’s Dick Fischer. From the classrooms to the fieldhouse to the PAC, he made an impact”.

Dick was named by the Pius Journal as one of the top ten athletes his senior year, having been co-captain of the 1960 football team and a State discus champion in 1961. He began his coaching and teaching career at Pius XI in 1966 and, over the course of the decades that followed, coached football, boys’ and girls’ basketball, track, girls’ soccer, and cross country. His head coaching accolades include seven state championships, ten conference championships, and an astounding 116-4 record in basketball from 1980-1984. Claassen commented that despite all of Dick’s coaching accolades, perhaps his biggest accomplishment in athletics was his advocacy for women’s sports.

“He was quietly one of the pioneers of girls athletics here in Wisconsin,” said Joel. “He chose to get involved when not many successful coaches dared to do it”.

Fischer taught math, science, and theology, and also served five years in Development and nine years as Athletic Director. He spent countless hours tutoring students and is remembered by many for his words of encouragement, constant support, and never-ending belief in their capabilities.

“I will always remember the life lessons he taught me,” remarked James Arnold ‘16. He characterized Dick as “the greatest tutor/mentor a teen in my shoes could have” and added, “I’ll always remember the knowledge and help he gave me every morning. He’d get me breakfast before we started our tutoring sessions. I can’t say I would’ve made it through high school without him”.

Roger Radke ‘74, who first knew Dick as his TAC teacher and grew to know him as a colleague, mentor, and friend, believes it’s the opportunities that Dick created for others that tops the list of his greatest accomplishments. He wanted each person to see their potential, work hard, and achieve the success that was meant for them. He took great joy in watching how transformative a Pius XI education could be in shaping lives, just as it did for him.

“He was always opening doors for people and he got great joy out of watching them benefit from those doors he opened,” said Roger. “It’s no wonder he wanted to usher the lines at graduation every year; he wanted to see the students walk across that stage. He was so proud of them”.

The Dick Fischer & Mary Riegert Endowment Fund has been established to ensure that Dick’s legacy lives on and that doors continue to be opened for current and future Popes by providing tuition assistance to families who want the same Pius XI experience that Dick valued.

“I found myself recognizing how much God had blessed me by bringing me to Pius XI where I had a chance to serve his people. My blessing list includes many fond memories and much love. For what I have given, my reward has easily been returned 100 times over.”

- Dick Fischer, reflecting upon being honored for 50 years of service at the 2016 commencement
