PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE JACK HERBERT The theme of this issue of Examen is “Keeping the Faith”. Father Baumgardner and Father Bogacki (both graduates of Pius XI) offer their perspectives on turning to God during a challenging year. Senior Michaela Baudry is profiled and shares her faith in action. Andy and Jan Fleckenstein are significant donors who took a leap of faith in 2007 and made major investments in scholarship support. The listing of donors who have invested in our community is a testament to their faith and hope in a bright future for the young people in our care. Recently, we lost an important member of our faith community, Sr. Carol Grandlich SSSF, who passed away in October after a long battle with cancer. Sr. Carol helped many students and staff members in their faith walk by living Gospel values and serving our educational mission. Yes, this has been a difficult year for Pius XI, and for many in our community. But we feel blessed by the way our staff has coalesced around a common goal of ensuring that each student is challenged to reach their unique and highest potential. We are heartened by the resilience of our students and staff, and the generosity of the greater Pius XI community. Hebrews 11:1 says, “Faith is the realization of what is hoped for and evidence of things not seen.” So while most of us are ready to kick 2020 to the curb, we pause and say a prayer of thanksgiving for the goodness, the joy and the hope that we know is to come. Keep the Faith Popes!

FACULTY SPOTLIGHT JONATHAN DAVIDSON The “performing bug” bit Jonathan Davidson when he was 9 years old. “I have always liked being the center of attention. As the youngest of four kids, I always wanted to get my parents’ ears. They signed me up for a theater class, and I never turned back.” Davidson, the new Performing Arts Department Chair, also happens to be a professional magician for over 30 years. He has performed at the prestigious Magic Castle in Los Angeles and has worked as an actor in commercials, short films and blockbuster films. His teaching style all comes down to approaching everything from a place of kindness. “In theater we are asking people to be vulnerable, and sometimes
embarrass themselves on purpose,” Davidson said. “I can’t ask you to become a character without creating a sense of trust and kindness. It has to be a place where the kids want to be and feel safe.” One of Davidson’s goals in his second year as Theater Director is to expand the Performing Arts curriculum. A new Tech Theatre class began this year, covering all aspects of building and design of sets for theatrical productions, as well as elements of stage lighting, sound, costumes, props and stage management. “We have a truly vibrant Performing Arts program here,” Davidson said. “Whether they end up on stage, in production, or in set design, we have talented students who want to do anything they can to contribute. It says a lot about the quality of students here.”
TAKE-A-STAND AWARD
JUDGE AUDREY SKWIERAWSKI ‘85 During the 2020 Stand By Me Virtual Celebration on April 30, we honored Judge Audrey Skwierawski ’85 with our first ever “Take-A-Stand” Award in recognition of her lifelong commitment to the pursuit of fairness and justice, advocating for the vulnerable and fighting for justice for victims of sexual assault and domestic violence. After graduating from Pius XI, Audrey received a degree in communications from Northwestern University and then went on to Georgetown Law School. After graduating from law school, she returned to Milwaukee as the assistant district attorney and a coordinator for the city’s Commission on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault. In 2011 she joined the Wisconsin Department 4

of Justice as the violence against women resource prosecutor. In 2018 she was appointed Milwaukee Circuit Court Judge and serves at the Vel R. Phillips Juvenile Justice Center. She has served as a board member and vice president for the Wisconsin Association of State Prosecutors Executive Board, Team Co-Chair of the Attorney General’s Statewide Sexual Assault Response Team, a State of Wisconsin Violence Against Women Act Advisory Committee member, and member of the Mount Mary University Criminal Justice Advisory board. Audrey has spent nearly her entire career advocating on behalf of victims of sexual assault and domestic violence – people in vulnerable, life threatening and terrifying situations most in need of compassion, care and justice.
MAKING HISTORY
1970 BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM 50 years ago, the class of 1970 was just weeks into their senior year. No one could have imagined that this class would make history as the first state champions in Pius XI Boys Basketball. The team, coached by Joe Buneta ‘52, played hard-nosed man-toman defense and ran their set plays with precision. They were balanced offensively, with four players averaging in double figures. “Nobody was going to outwork us and be in better condition than we were. When the fourth quarter comes, we were always in better shape than our opponents,” said John Hansen ’70. Tom Giordano ’70 reminisced, “We had outstanding team chemistry. It was all about team, doing whatever it took to win. I wouldn’t trade my experience at Pius XI for anything in the world. I learned some of the best life lessons through my basketball experience.” After starting the season 5-3, the Popes started clicking midway through the conference slate as they rattled off 9 straight wins and won 14 of 15 games heading into the state tournament. The Popes narrowly defeated Racine St. Catherine by four points in the quarterfinals, then knocked off rival Marquette 40-38 in overtime in the semis.
That set the stage for the epic championship game against De Pere Pennings. The game was close throughout, with Pennings taking a 42-37 lead with 5:24 to play. But the Popes held the Squires scoreless the rest of the game. Coach Buneta called timeout to draw up the final play, with the score tied at 42. Thanks to the perfectly timed teamwork of Hansen, John Hayek, and Tom Norris, Dan Carney caught a perfect pass from point guard Rick Edgerton and scored the winning layup as time expired. Hansen said, “We all mobbed each other on the court....it was the best feeling you’ll ever have. What a memory.”

KEEPING THE FAITH
FR. JOHN BAUMGARDNER ’08 FR. PHILLIP BOGACKI ‘99 We have all faced unprecedented challenges over the past year. Our parish priests are not immune to these challenges. We asked Fr. John Baumgardner ’08 and Fr. Phillip Bogacki ’99, how they are keeping the faith as individuals and leaders of their faith communities. Fr. John currently serves as Associate Pastor at Three Holy Women, SS Peter & Paul, Our Lady of Divine Providence, and Old St. Mary parishes in Milwaukee. Fr. Phillip serves as Pastor at Christ King and St. Bernard parishes in Wauwatosa.
Like all of us, you have faced a lot this year. A global pandemic, isolation, racial unrest, and political division, to name a few. What has been the most challenging for you and for those under your care? FR. JOHN: The most challenging parts have been that as a fairly young priest, you really get to know the people you serve. It’s a great privilege. When they’re joyful, you feel joy. When they’re happy, you feel happy. But also when they experience stress, anxiety and pain, you feel it as well. There’s a real poverty of time. There are a limited number of hours in the day, and now there are so many more people out there suffering and struggling - you just want to help as much as you can. FR. PHILLIP: The loss of control has created a deep sense of fear, expressed in anger. And being asked to socially isolate made us all less mentally healthy. Our interactions are now online, and little good comes from primarily electronic relationships. Added to this, our natural fear of death has been exacerbated by the reality of the virus. When we don’t have a firm trust in eternal life, then this earthly life is all we have. When we think of death, we become scared. When we have an understanding of eternal life, we are still scared, but have a broader and longer perspective on reality. Amidst all these tensions, a lot of division is present among many relationships.

EXAMEN
Are there any particular scriptures, songs, or quotes that have brought you comfort? FR. JOHN: Psalms. The Psalms are really raw. Sometimes we feel like we have to go to prayer as a job interview. We should come to God and pray as our authentic selves. If we’re a little angry, questioning and wondering, that’s okay! The Psalms give us permission to be ourselves and find God, in a very particular way. FR. PHILLIP: The Great Commission, Jesus’ last words, Matthew 28:16-20. Jesus says never stop moving forward, never get stuck. And know that he is with us always until the end of the age. Have you experienced doubt during these months, wondering where God is in the midst of all of this suffering? FR. JOHN: It seemed like things just kept coming and coming. I grew tired of everything going on, it was painful to watch. The most important thing I do is to pray for people. This was one of my ordination promises. I pray the Liturgy of the Hours - 5 times a day - every Catholic priest and sister worldwide prays the same psalms and prayers - praying for the church and all parishioners you serve. FR. PHILLIP: God has never gone anywhere. It is us, as human beings, who often abandon God. God is always present, even if His presence is more mysterious or difficult to discern in suffering. With some things in our lives taken away, this has been a time to focus on a quiet and simple renewal of our relationship with God. To rediscover He who gave us life and He who we hope to meet face to face at the end of our earthly lives.
Father John Baumgardner ‘08
What advice can you offer for those who are suffering right now? FR. JOHN: Pray for the virtue of hope. We’re all tired of doing the same thing over and over again. A French poet once said, “Hope is the virtue of giving to ordinary activity the grace to start anew and afresh.” Hope gives you this possibility of taking the same old same old and somehow, by God’s grace, it can be a beautiful thing still. And pray to Mary. She saw her son suffer on the cross. When everybody else lost faith, she still hoped. She didn’t lose her faith. Even though there is suffering, that’s not the end of the story. FR. PHILLIP: Lay your sufferings and struggles and fears at the foot of the cross. The Lord figures out our problems far better than we can ever imagine. But we need to let go of the strings of control. Leave your deepest struggles at the cross and let God figure it out.
Father Phillip Bogacki ‘99
What book is on your nightstand right now? FR. JOHN: I recently finished Never Split the Difference: Negotiating As If Your Life Depended On It by Chris Voss. I enjoy reading about this kind of stuff as I majored in Business Finance in college. FR. PHILLIP: I’m reading Whale Day and Other Poems by Billy Collins. He is the greatest poet alive today and fun to read. What is your go-to activity to de-stress? FR. JOHN: I love to go running and biking. If you see a guy dressed in black who looks like he’s still in high school on a bike, it’s probably me. FR. PHILLIP: Playing with my dog. It lowers the blood pressure instantly!
Have there been any positive things to come out of this time? FR. JOHN: Our parishes, like many others, made the jump to online masses available on YouTube. We’ve gotten notes from military personnel in Germany. The beautiful gift of technology, being able to bring the Mass to people around the world. Plus, people have wanted to comment on or mute my homilies for years and they finally had the chance! FR. PHILLIP: The break in public worship has also been the opportunity for some to return to a new and deeper relationship with their Catholic faith. There have been many new faces at Mass over the last few months. A profound opportunity for a fresh start.

But, what she is most proud of is her commitment to serving others. “If I can try to serve others as Jesus did, that’s what I want to do,” Michaela said. “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Michaela’s commitment to living Gospel values was instilled in her by her parents. They are active parishioners at St. Jude the Apostle Parish in Wauwatosa, and Michaela’s father (Pius XI wrestling coach Dave Baudry), is the Associate Director of Adult, Child, and Youth Ministry at St. John Vianney Parish in Brookfield. As a family, the Baudrys volunteer at the “Families At The Dump” project in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Families at the Dump provides physical, educational, medical, spiritual and emotional support to the families living in the landfill or garbage dump in Puerto Vallarta or surrounding areas.
“It’s really easy to look at the homeless and brush it off and say “oh it’s just a homeless guy.” I’ve been able to work with homeless people and hear their stories and it gives you a new perspective,” she said. “There are families on the street who have nothing. And I look back on my life and wow, I have a house and more clothes than these kids will ever wear. It makes me realize how grateful and blessed I am.” In addition to volunteering with her family, Michaela also participates in yearly mission trips across the country with the Catholic Heart Work Camp. Locally, she volunteers with the Matthew 25 Work Camp through Good Shepherd Parish in Menomonee Falls. This camp was founded by current Pius XI parent Corinna Ramsey, mother of Gabriella Ramsey ‘21. With Matthew 25, Michaela has served at the Ronald McDonald House, Zachariah’s Acres, the St. Vincent DePaul meal program, St. Ben’s Meal Program , House of Peace, Luther Manor Nursing Home, and various women’s centers around Milwaukee. “I’ve seen a lot on these trips,” Michaela said. “If there’s any way I can give back, I’m all for it because the Lord has blessed me so much.”

A GREATER GOOD DR. MICHAEL HARTUNG ‘02 Dr. Michael Hartung ’02 comes from a family committed to public service. His dad is a retired Milwaukee Fire Lieutenant, his mom a retired MPS teacher (now teaching at Mother of Good Counsel), and his brother Robert Hartung ’00 is a Milwaukee Fire Captain. When it came time to decide his own path, he knew he too was drawn to serve. “Looking back on my time at Pius XI, I think there was a real emphasis on social justice and doing what is right and good,” Michael said. “I think that was one of the takeaways that I keep with me. Working for a greater good.” At Marquette University Michael pursued Biomedical Engineering and spent a summer volunteering in Ecuador. He was accepted into University of Wisconsin Medical School but chose to defer admission for a year and moved to Quito, Ecuador where he was a “house parent” at Casa Gabriel, a Christian-based home for youth living on the street.
really sick and suffering which makes it more difficult to treat them.” “I’ve seen numerous arrow injuries, uncommon parasites and very advanced disease. Trainees in the US rarely have exposure to parasitic diseases or such sick patients, so I use these cases to augment their training and increase their interest in global health.” Because of COVID’s impact on in-person teaching, Dr. Hartung created an online elective course to showcase some of these unusual cases, as well as provide medical students and residents with opportunities to learn radiology at a distance. (visit www.learnabdominal.com) As for the impact on COVID on his life and work? Dr. Hartung is able to spend a little more time with his wife and four children, as well as devote more time to volunteering his radiological services and indeed, working for a greater good.
“It’s a small organization, but really powerful in what they do. We helped get kids off the street, provided them with food, shelter, an education and spiritual and emotional guidance. The program really changes lives and futures. I still stay in touch with them and hope to bring my family back there someday.” After completing his residency in Radiology at the Medical College of Wisconsin, he returned to University of Wisconsin-Madison as academic faculty. In addition to interpreting scans, performing procedures, and training residents and fellows, he volunteers as a teleradiologist for mission hospitals in Kenya and Peru, by interpreting CT scans remotely in order to deliver better outcomes for patients living in rural areas with limited access to subspeciality radiology care. “I travelled to Tenwek Hospital in Bomet, Kenya in February for two weeks. Villagers frequently have to sell their animals and seek support from their village in order to pay for and receive medical care. Often people do not come to the hospital unless they are www.piusxi.org

DONOR SPOTLIGHT ANDY AND JAN FLECKENSTEIN Thirteen years ago Andy and Jan Fleckenstein made their first investment in opportunity for Pius XI Catholic High School students. A scholarship gift to Pius XI which supported six students. Since that first gift, they have invested in the success of more than 100 Pius XI students. The Fleck Foundation Scholarships began as a way to get “deserving kids from the City of Milwaukee into good schools”. Andy quotes his longtime friend, the late Marty Stein: “The only answer to the problem of poverty is education. And time is not on our side.” The urgency Andy feels to solve the opportunity gap in education comes from a life built on his own determination to solve complex problems. Andy was diagnosed with dyslexia as a teenager after struggling in school most of his life. His determination and a special teacher who pushed him helped him to get into Marquette University and earn a degree in engineering. While serving as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy, Andy was married and had a young family to support. Following his service, he was approached to work on an idea to develop a reliable brine valve for water softeners. He worked on this for months and was successful. This led to the design of other water conditioning controls and eventually his own international company, Fleck Controls. He enjoyed significant wealth after selling Fleck Controls in 1995, but this wealth did not bring fulfillment. Giving it away did. “We have friends who have a lot of money and cars and houses, but seem unhappy. You work to make a living, but you GIVE to make a life,” he said.
He and Jan are committed to scholarship support and education initiatives all over Milwaukee as well as supporting organizations that help recovering addicts. “Take an interest in people and care,” said Andy. “We have met so many people we would have never met if we stayed in the country club. We like to see kids become successful and productive and get out of difficult circumstances. How are they going to do that without an education?” Andy and Jan chose Pius XI because they believe that students from all backgrounds are given opportunities to become their best selves. Whether they graduate from a 4-year college, 2-year college or trade school, Andy and Jan want their scholars to become productive, happy and able to enjoy a fulfilling life. When asked to reflect on the profound impact he and Jan have had on education in Milwaukee, Andy says, “It doesn’t feel like enough kids…”

NEW ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP “Pius XI Catholic High School was a major influence on our lives as adolescents. From the staff’s influence our faith was increased, academics strengthened, arts appreciated and the need to serve the larger community enhanced. It is our hope that the selected student will have a similar growth experience at Pius XI Catholic High School. We have always valued the gift that Pius was/is to us.” – Marianne Thompson ‘56 Marianne Thompson ’56 and her sister Marlene Atkielski ’51 were both lifelong educators who often discussed giving back to the school they loved. When Marlene passed away in 2019, Marianne established the Marianne K. Thompson ’56 and Marlene D. Thompson Atkielski ’51 Endowed Scholarship to help students in need reach their highest potential. The legacy of the Thompson sisters, their commitment to education, and to Pius XI will continue in perpetuity through this thoughtful gift.

2019-2020 FINANCIAL OVERVIEW Our fiscal year ending June 30, 2020 started off strong but pandemic-related challenges in the last three months did have an impact at our year end. Investments were made in new Computer Science and Technical Theater courses as well as in campus improvement and energy efficient lighting. In November 2019, an anonymous alumnus provided a $50,000 challenge grant which was exceeded within weeks with support totaling $94,000. In February, we hosted our 8th and final Hank Raymonds Classic supporting endowed scholarships. And then in March, COVID-19 forced many schools across the country, including Pius XI, to shift from in-person instruction to virtual learning. In April, we received a Payroll Protection Program loan through the SBA which we anticipate being forgiven. We closed the year with an operating deficit of $376,000 primarily due to lost revenue resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. We were grateful to end the year on a hopeful note with a new endowed scholarship established by an alumna and lifelong educator. The need for tuition support for returning and future Pius XI Popes remains high as we strive to make a Pius XI education accessible for all families.

SOMETHING BOLD Something BOLD, something NEW, something GOLD, something BLUE … If you have visited our website or social media pages, you may have noticed some bright new colors and bold new branding. In 2019, former Pius XI parent and professional communications consultant, Anne Curley worked with Pius XI leaders, current and past parents and board directors to distill what makes Pius XI unique and why students choose Pius XI as their high school. This brand essence became the basis of new creative work this summer. Giving the young people in our care the nutrients they need – acceptance, respect, challenges and choices -- to thrive as confident, capable, compassionate, faith-filled adults. The creative experts at Hanson Dodge, under the guidance of Chief Strategy Officer and Partner, Mike Stefaniak ‘81, developed several bold concepts to visually convey this strong emphasis on individuality. Anne and the Hanson Dodge team donated their time, creativity and expertise for which we are incredibly thankful. The result? Be More YOU. Pius XI students are given the tools and support to become the people they are uniquely called to be…and MORE.
