PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE JACK HERBERT Pope Francis said, “Gratitude is a characteristic trait of the heart visited by the Holy Spirit; to obey God we must first remember His benefits.”

To say I feel gratitude for Pius XI and to the Lord for placing me here is an understatement. I am thankful for wise and caring colleagues, talented and dedicated staff, ambitious students, supportive parents, generous alumni and friends, and of course the delicious food in the union!

In this issue of Examen, we include an honor roll of donors from the 2018-19 school year. I am humbled that so many of you have made Pius XI students, faculty and programs part of your financial plans. While space does not allow us to recognize every gift, it is still very much appreciated.

The time between Thanksgiving and Christmas always seems to disappear in the blink of an eye. It’s a shame really, because it is a magical space of excitement, anticipation and reflection. Our daily 3-minute Examen prayer ends with: Lord, give me eyes to see your presence, ears to hear your call and the courage to cooperate with your grace. Amen. I pray that each of us are attentive to the blessings all around us this holiday season. After all, it is the heart being visited by the Holy Spirit. That’s pretty cool.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS PROFILE JOE CHRNELICH ‘76 Joe Chrnelich ’76 was inducted into the Pius XI Athletic Hall of Fame in 2000 as one of the school’s most successful boys basketball players having led the Popes to back-to-back state championships in 1975 and 1976. Joe played at the collegiate level for the Wisconsin Badgers, and was drafted in 1980 by the New York Knicks of the NBA. After playing professionally overseas, Joe embarked on a successful business career. He is currently the Chairman of Asia Region Development and Rainmaker Corporation. A proud parent of three Pius XI alumni (Adam ’07, Matt ’08 and Megan ’11), Joe recently shared his thoughts on why he joined the Board, his connection to Pius XI, as well as some advice for today’s students.

What impact did your Pius XI experience have on you?

What does it mean to you, to be an alumnus of Pius XI?

It was an amazing four years. There were so many impactful teachers. I will never forget the things they taught me. The teachers were exceptionally close as a staff, and we all knew it. They knew us as more than just students in their classrooms. Sister Theresa taught me how to type. Mr. Manti helped me discover a love of History. I will forever owe a debt of gratitude to Pius XI and view my joining the Board as an opportunity to repay that debt.

I have always felt connected to this place, even long after I graduated. Once you leave Pius XI, you never really leave. It stays with you. My high school friends and I still get together every year on the night before Thanksgiving to tell stories – it’s like we never missed a beat. And now I see my three kids who came through Pius XI staying in touch with their high school friends. It’s such a special group to be a part of, the Pius XI alumni family.

Why does the city of Milwaukee need a Pius XI Catholic High School?

What is your message to high school students today?

The family atmosphere is so unique. It is a very personal experience when you attend Pius XI. That’s the way it has always been. The faculty and staff want to know you. They want to know your family.

They have a vested interest and responsibility in your future, and they make sure they send you on the right course for it. This school IS Milwaukee – bringing kids with all different backgrounds and life experiences together during these formative years of their lives.

Seek out your passion. Once you have a sense of your passion and what you really love to do, everything else falls in line. Share your passion with your teachers and those around you – they will help guide and navigate you.

LEGENDARY LEADER JOEL CLAASSEN

It all started with an invitation from then Pius XI girls basketball head coach Dick Fischer. It was fall of 1980, and Joel Claassen was on his second day on the job as a Pius XI Social Science teacher. Fischer asked Claassen if he wanted to coach with him in the girls basketball program, and the rest is history.....and historic.

Claassen was named girls basketball head coach in 1985, and in 18 years as the leader of the Lady Popes, he accumulated a staggering record of 419 wins and 37 losses. His teams won 14 state championships, 18 conference championships, and five national tournament championships and were nationally ranked for 17 consecutive years. As the girls softball coach for 24 years, Claassen’s record is 451 wins and 146 losses, with four state and 12 conference championships. Since taking over the boys basketball program in 2002, he has a record of 223 wins and 96 losses, with seven conference championships and two trips to the WIAA state semifinals.

Claassen was inducted into the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in September, and he continues to inspire his players and students in his 40th year of service at Pius XI. “I love the daily challenge of coaching. Teaching the simplicities of the game, the fundamentals. The game has changed over the years, but I’ve learned to never lose sight of my core principles and beliefs as a leader,” Claassen said.

Former Lady Popes standout Tracy (Grandlich) Josetti ’98 said about Claassen, “He taught me to strive for excellence. Good enough wasn’t an option. If he knew we had more in us and we chose to hold back, he was disappointed. He did his best to find what motivated each player. There wasn’t a one-size-fits-all approach.”

Claassen strongly believes in the values that Pius XI teaches students and the importance of our school in the city of Milwaukee. “Our students are great kids. They teach each other every day,” Claassen said. “They come from different neighborhoods, different ethnicities, different backgrounds. And they blend as one community. We are a hidden gem of what Milwaukee should be.”

“I’m grateful for Pius XI making me a better teacher, a better father, and a better husband.

I’ve spent my entire adult life here, and the welcoming, family feel of our community has not changed.”

CAMPUS MINISTRY UPDATE CAROL WARD

• New Pius XI Coordinator of Campus Ministry

Rooted in our strong Catholic tradition, we are grateful for the many opportunities our Pius XI Popes have to grow in their relationship with the Lord and to make a difference in the world. St. Francis said, “Preach always, sometimes use words.” That is the spirit our Campus Ministry program aims to foster in our students.

A key component of preparing our students to be those preachers, is to help them to develop a relationship with God rooted in prayer. This year our new Student Chaplain Program is preparing students to spend personal time in prayer and to then minister to their fellow students. Student Chaplains lead prayer, bless fellow students, plan liturgies and prayer services and spearhead our school outreach. We hope that the students will be leaders in fostering our faith life with supportive adult guidance.

Eucharist is central to our lives at Pius XI. Our students are now more involved than ever to plan school Masses that are alive with joy and song! New altar cloths are being sewn; a student is making a larger altar that can be used for our student Masses, new training has been launched so that more students can serve as ministers within the Mass and so that the student body can be more actively involved. We invite you to join us for our January 23rd liturgy when the new altar will be blessed by Bishop Haines.

As St. Francis reached out to the poor, so are our students with a specific focus on the homeless this year.

Partnering with the students at St. Dominic Parish School in Brookfield, our Pius XI Popes are making Mercy Mats for the homeless out of plastic shopping bags in order to provide a dry, soft place for people to sleep. This takes a real commitment of materials and perseverance!

Getting To Know Carol Ward What are your main job responsibilities as the Coordinator of Campus Ministry?

I coordinate activities that support the faith life at our school. This includes retreats, masses, prayer services, daily prayer and Examen, service, etc.

The main focus this year is developing students to become youth leaders in fostering our faith life at Pius XI. Where did you grow up?

What is your favorite Bible verse?

I enjoy most outdoor activities, especially hiking, canoing, and skiing. I am also an avid fan of the Brewers, Packers and Bucks. And I love to travel.

PREPARED FOR A LIFE OF SERVICE SIREE COFTA ‘20 Saint Teresa of Calcutta is oft-quoted saying, “Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love.”

There is nothing small about what senior Siree Cofta has accomplished.

At 18 years old, and still finishing up her first semester of her senior year, she is already working with the North Shore Fire Department with the hopes of entering the highly competitive Milwaukee Fire Cadet program in 2020. How she got there is a study in incremental pursuit of greater goals.

Several of her teachers report that as a freshman, Siree was judicious about her school work, but quiet and reserved. As the years went on, Siree quietly amassed a portfolio of accomplishments while building her confidence and sense of self. She holds several school weightlifting records, competed on the wrestling team, served on stage crew, won a Scholastic Art Award for her painting, competed in throwing for Track and Field, and trains for powerlifting competitions, all while maintaining over a 4.0 GPA. The alarm clock rings at 4:00 am every day for Siree.

She packs her backpack, lunch and clothes for the day, and then it’s off to her 5:00 workout at the Jewish Community Center in Whitefish Bay. She gets ready at the gym, leaves by 7:00 and is off to Pius XI to start her school day. As her Mom says, “She’s crazy....but awesome.”

Her faith is important to her as is working to her potential out of deep gratitude for the opportunities she’s been given.

In addition to all that she does at Pius XI, Siree completed her fourth mission trip through the Catholic Heart Work Camp program this summer. “If I can choose how to spend my time, it’s going to be in service. Whether it’s training to be a firefighter...or being on Pius XI stage crew...even if I’m just moving chairs around for two hours, you realize how much it helps others. It’s easy to make a difference, even if it’s just a small one.”

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT EMILY TOPCZEWSKI ‘11 “I’ve always felt there are stories out there of people that are not being told.” – Emily Topczewski ‘11 Emily Topczewski ’11 has spent the past four months traveling to every state in America interviewing community members and civic leaders for her audio, video, and photo documentary project called “We The Voters.” The project, scheduled to finish in November of 2020, just before the Presidential Election, has one goal: Conversation.

“When you stop and listen, you realize we all have something to share and a meaning to our stories and what we believe,” says Topczewski. “If you can listen to a person’s story with an open mind, you can usually find common ground or empathy for where they’re coming from.”

Topczewski’s experience at Pius XI helped shape her open-minded view of the world. “I met so many people there who were from very different backgrounds than me,” she says. “It made it very easy for me to find that empathy and common ground with anyone I talk to for this project.”

“I am infinitely grateful for the education I received at Pius XI. I strongly believe that I would not have the skills, nor the confidence, to do what I do now if I didn’t have that support and backing.”

She grew up in a conservative, Catholic family, and attended St. Mary’s Visitation School in Elm Grove. Topczewski graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee with a degree in journalism and media studies. While she was there, Topczewski was the marketing coordinator for the Milwaukee LGBT Community Center and also worked as a radio producer for the Charlie Sykes show on WTMJ. “I see both sides and care about both sides because I feel like I’m on both sides – or at least, the people I love and have known throughout my life are,” Topczewski says. “We have way more in common than we think we do. And in this current political time period, it’s really easy to get caught up in the ways that we’re different. We lose sight on all of the ways we’re similar.”

Jane Marie Bradish, OSF ’82 is an author for Global Sisters Report, a project of the National Catholic Reporter.

Andy Rohling ’84 is the Deputy Commanding General for the United States Army, Europe. Andy is based in Wiesbaden, Germany.

Michelle Madden ’86 wrote a book titled “111 Places in Milwaukee That You Must Not Miss”.

AnnMarie Marlier ’86 is the Director of Institutional Effectiveness for Doane University in Nebraska. She was also selected as a judge for the global Reimagine Education competition sponsored by the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and Quacquarelli Symonds Limited, a global university rankings publisher.

Ron Russell (Kuenstler) ’88 was named Principal at St. Josaphat Parish School in Milwaukee.

Nina (Gagliano) Bartoshevich ’89 opened Paralegal Services, LLC. She is an independent contractor working for various attorneys doing their paralegal work.

Nadina Campos ’89 was promoted to Police Sergeant with the UW-Milwaukee Police Department.

Amanda Hill ’89 is a nurse practitioner at Ascension Internal Medicine in Racine, WI. Lynnette Kalmadge ’89 is the Executive Director of the Waukesha Education Foundation, Inc. Elizabeth (Worzalla) Riggs ’89 recently joined the public policy research and consulting firm Public Sector Consultants as a Senior Consultant. Elizabeth works to improve the quality of life for residents of Michigan and beyond through developing and implementing innovative, actionable public policies in talent, economics, energy, and environment.

Laura Story ’89 works at IBM and is currently working on their global team defining secure hybrid multicloud solutions.

John Tracy ’89 opened Uptown Coffee Company in Marshfield, WI. He is also a digital marketing professional with an emphasis on user experience design.

Katherine Maloney Perhach ’93 was named United States Bankruptcy Judge for the Eastern District of Wisconsin.

Anne Marie Morgan ’95 earned her Certified Financial Planner designation with Robert W. Baird & Company.

Jennifer (Gwizdek) O’Grosky ’97 was awarded the Honorary Life Membership Award from Wisconsin State PTA, the highest honor presented by State PTA in recognition of outstanding and faithful service performed in the interest and welfare of children.

Patrick Goesch ’98 is an Applications Engineer at Fluid Handling in Menomonee Falls. He sizes and designs boilers, heat exchanges, and pump systems.

Melissa (Novak) Hayes ’99 is a Consultant at Bluetree Network in New Orleans, LA. Jackie Barutha ’00 is the owner of Jaxie Bridal, an accessories company who won the “Best Accessories” category in the Wisconsin Bride magazine’s “Best Of Awards”. This is the 6th year in a row that Jackie’s company has won this award.

Dan Carey ’00 was named the 2019 Coach Of The Year in the Global Women’s Basketball Association. He is the head coach of the Wisconsin GLO, a women’s professional basketball team in Oshkosh, WI. The GLO finished their inaugural season 14-0 and GWBA League Champions.

Michael Brannen ’05 won the Heartland Emmy Award for Team Coverage, his second Heartland Emmy in as many years. Michael is an Executive Producer at KWGN Denver, CO. Mike Wejrowski ’05 is the Client Services Coordinator at Midwest Heating & Cooling.

Ploen Sopitpongstorn ’06 is a Voice Teacher at Shrewsbury International School in Bangkok, Thailand, and Vocal Director for Selladoor Asia Pacific.

Martha Krueger ’07 Co-Founder and CEO of The Social Lights social media agency, was named to Inc. magazine’s “Inc. 5000” list, the most prestigious ranking of the nation’s fastest-growing private companies.

Neal Lofy ’00 is a detective in the Special Investigations Unit of the Racine Police Department in Southeast Wisconsin. Neal was recognized by the FBI with an Unsung Hero Award, and was also named one of the Top 40 Under 40 law enforcement officers in the world by the International Association of Chiefs of Police.

Jake Nowak ’01 is the Dean of Students at Pius XI Catholic High School.

Berenice Bahena Jurado ’12 is an Undergraduate Bilingual Admission Counselor and Grace Scholarship Coordinator at Mount Mary University.

Katie Simet ’01 is an Assistant Director for Academic Services in the athletic department at Marquette University. Katie organized Marquette’s firstever service trip specifically for student-athletes.

A FOUNDATION OF FAITH “No one can take your education away from you.

Education is the best gift you can receive.” - Walter J. Yakich The Mary Alice Yakich Educational Foundation was established in 1999 by Walter J. Yakich in honor of his late wife, Mary Alice Yakich. Mary Alice understood the value of a Catholic education, and knew the importance of giving back to her community. She was not only a political pioneer, she also understood what it meant to be a part of something bigger than herself.

She had drive, determination, and compassion.

Today, Walter and Mary Alice’s children, Jan Drzewiecki (parent to three Pius XI graduates) and Jay Yakich continue to live out this legacy as directors of the Foundation.

The Foundation’s support of Pius XI students began in 2006 with one scholar. Since then, more than 75 students have received $510,000 in scholarship support to attend Pius XI. Scholars come from all walks of life and are driven by a common purpose… to be the best they can be, and to achieve and succeed not only in the classroom, but in their communities as well.

“My Dad understood that it is in giving that we receive. From working with these scholars, we have received the gifts of love, joy and happiness in a very profound way,” said Jan Drzewiecki.

Walter recognized that in order to have thriving students, you need to have thriving and passionate educators who believe in the mission of Catholic education, and live it in their personal and professional lives. In 2011, The Mary Alice Yakich Educational Foundation began recognizing Pius XI staff with its Good Shepherd Awards.

“We were honored to give life to a heartfelt belief in the power of an educator to transform others, their lives, and their community for a greater good. Since 2011, we have honored 51 educators with $153,000 in awards,” said Jan Drzewiecki.

The Good Shepherd winners receive a $2500 personal award as well as a $500 for their individual departments.

The 2019 Good Shepherd awardees were recognized at the 20th anniversary celebration of the Mary Alice Yakich Educational Foundation in August and included: Shannon King, Suzanne Lovinus, Jake Nowak, Lauren Schimmels, Will Swenson and Nicole Tridimas.

“None of us is here by chance. God has a plan and purpose for each of our lives,” said Jan. “Each of these educators goes beyond the classroom itself to influence the students they teach and plant the seeds for future leaders.”

“This wrap-around strategy of investing in both educators and students continues to uplift and strengthen the entire Pius XI community and we are profoundly grateful,” said President Jack Herbert.

INVESTING IN POTENTIAL Zilber Ltd., a 70-year-old property development firm in downtown Milwaukee, is known for seeing potential in real estate such as the now thriving Pabst development, the Riverside Theater and the Aurora Zilber Hospice. In the spirit of Zilber’s dedication to investing in the future through real estate, Executive Vice President and CFO, Bob Braun, has been directing yearly contributions to a unique fund for students at Pius XI since 2014.

In 1949, after having served in World War II and working for a small real estate firm, Joe Zilber wanted to marry his college sweetheart and prove to her parents that he could support her. After being denied a raise by his employer, Zilber decided to establish his own real estate brokerage office Towne Realty, and thus began a lucrative career and eventually a family foundation which would impact Milwaukee’s most vulnerable.

The Zilber Fund at Pius XI supports basic needs for students outside of tuition, including lunch money, field trip fees and school supplies. Following the establishment of the fund, an internal committee was formed to review requests and identify needs within our student body.

“Joe believed in the power of leverage,” said Braun.

“Through investing in potential, we are able to contribute to a student’s success in ways that most of us would take for granted. I think that Joe and Vera would have agreed that supporting student success is a significant way to leverage company assets.”

“I learned about Pius XI through a faculty member,” said Braun. “Many students do not have the means to reach their full potential as they struggle with basic needs. I am really happy to see that these contributions have such a direct impact on students, and grateful that Zilber allows us to direct these funds.”

Since 2014, Zilber Ltd. has impacted the lives of numerous students who have benefited from a total of $60,000 in funds directed to Pius XI Catholic High School.

As part of the Senior management team, Braun, who has been with Zilber since 1981, and other managers are able to support organizations that align with the values of company founder, the late Joe Zilber.

FINANCIAL OVERVIEW Our fiscal year ending June 30, 2019 was marked by positive improvements in debt reduction, capital improvements including a new parking lot, and an increase in our endowment thanks to several newly established scholarship funds as well as the Hank Raymonds Classic basketball tournament. As part of our 90th anniversary celebration, we were fortunate to receive a $45,000 challenge grant from the Erica P. John Fund which was matched by alumni and friends. An unexpected estate gift from a generous alumnus allowed for the repaving of the parking lot, and a $50,000 contribution from Fred Sitzberger ’71 helped pay for some of our short-term debt.

Each year, the need for tuition support increases and we were able to meet the needs of our families by awarding more than $2.2 million in financial aid and scholarships. Investments in safety, technology and academics remain a priority.
