Holy Week 2016 In the Life of the Church

Our Journey to the Cross At the Lenten breakfast, I talked about how we connect the practice of spirituality with the Christian calendar through worship. One of my favorite writers who talks about this connection is Robert Webber. He divides the Christian year into two major cycles. Advent through Epiphany he calls the cycle of light. In this cycle we dwell on the incarnation of Christ and his manifestation to the world. Beginning with Lent and continuing through Pentecost, we enter into another cycle, the cycle of life. The central motif here is death and resurrection. While the cycle of light focuses on the coming of Christ among us, the cycle of life recalls the purpose for which he came: the gift and sacrifice of his life to defeat the powers of sin and death that hold us in bondage and to give us the gift of forgiveness, healing, and new life.

The most significant time in the calendar of the Christian year falls within the cycle of life, and that time is Holy Week. It begins on the sixth Sunday in Lent, known as “Palm” Sunday. Don’t think of Palm Sunday simply as a day to remember Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem. It is certainly that, but it is more. It is your day too: your own entry into a solemn and glorious experience of spirituality. For Jesus, Palm Sunday was his gateway into the culmination of his life and ministry.

Holy Week, continued On Palm Sunday, March 20, we enter that gate with him and discover that our spiritual lives are being ordered around the most sacred moment in the history of the world, the church, and of our own experience of human existence.

We do not have services at the church from Monday through Wednesday of Holy Week, but I suggest that you spend time in personal devotion and prayer. On Thursday, March 24, at 7:30 p.m., we gather in the sanctuary to worship for Maundy Thursday. The day has this name because of Jesus’ new commandment (mandatum) that we are to love one another. We will also celebrate the Lord’s Supper in that service, and remember that on that night, Jesus instituted the sacrament as a memorial to his death.

On Good Friday, March 25, at 7:30 p.m., we gather again in our sanctuary to hear the Passion story in the Service of Tenebrae. This is a dramatic service that reminds us of the cost which God will give in order to liberate us from the powers of sin and death.

And then on Easter Sunday, March 27, we celebrate Christ’s resurrection, his victory over death and evil, and the renewal of all creation.

This is the Day of Resurrection, the most important Sunday of the year.

I encourage you to think about Holy Week as an opportunity not only to remember something that happened to Jesus. Think of it also as your journey from sin and death to newness of life. See yourself in the story. In Romans 6:5, Paul the Apostle says, “If we have been united with him like this in his death, we will certainly also be united with him in his resurrection.” Bless you on your journey into Holy Week!

Stephen Ministry Logo

Condolences Sympathy is expressed to the family and friends of Phyllis Grissinger, born March 29, 1926, died January 27, 2016.

A memorial service in memory of Joanne Alwine was held on February 6. The Rev. Dr. Fred Anderson preached and a lunch hosted by Betty Rader followed the service in witness to the resurrection.

Thanks to those who helped prepare the meal and facilities and came to support the Alwine family.

Stephen Ministry Facts and Stats Pine Street has been a Stephen Ministry congregation since 2010. We currently have four Stephen Ministers serving as care-givers in this congregation. Thank You, Betty!

If you have ever attended an event at Pine Street involving food – and believe me, there are many – you have surely been touched by the efforts of one Betty Rader. Betty is a tireless volunteer who works her magic in and around the kitchen, and then spills out into Fellowship Hall and the Gathering Place, always with a quick smile and a dash of enthusiasm. There have been many Pine Street events in recent months that have benefitted from Betty’s vision and service. A few that come to mind are various birthday receptions, team night dinners, theater lunches, the Alwine funeral reception, and the MAPS Whiffenpoofs concert. Betty always says “yes” when asked to lead or help with an event. Betty works well with the staff, and gets the job done. We are thankful for her dedicated service to Pine Street!

Audience and Perfomers at ‘Share the Love’

DDB and the Blizzard of 2016 The recent snow storm found DDB going above and beyond the usual call of duty to help those in need.

One of our clients, Jerry, has been on the streets for two years. He said he could not go to the shelter for the snow storm because he would “lose everything I own in life.” His “home” is a tent in the woods next to the PennDot building. Knowing the snow storm was on the way, Downtown Daily Bread helped Jerry prepare. I packed up my car with extra food, blankets, water, and candles I brought from home, and took these items to Jerry’s camp site, enough to hold him over for three days.

Dealing with the snow and being homeless takes a lot of energy. Jerry said he did not sleep because every other hour or so he would have to knock all the snow off his tent. His goals were to keep the snow off his tent so it wouldn’t collapse and to keep a path shoveled around his tent.

Being alone was difficult, and he read to pass the time, but sometimes he just sat and cried from the loneliness.

This snow storm was epic with 30 inches of snow! It wasn’t until Monday afternoon that Jerry could dig a path out of the woods to come to DDB. He was able to make it to our Drop-In Center. He said he was so happy just to talk to people.

Jerry admits he has made a few mistakes in life. Due to these mistakes, his family has abandoned him. His mother died a few years back, and thus he has no one to whom he can turn. He sees DDB as a place where he is fed, emotionally and physically. He said he is forever grateful to both of the case workers who have helped him along the way.

The concert was a great effort on behalf of Pine Street to help its mission of feeding the hungry and providing services for the homeless at Downtown Daily Bread. It was a fun evening filled with good feelings and “sharing the love!”

The Adult Learning Center A New Direction The Adult Learning Center serves adults who have been economically and socially disadvantaged by virtue of never having completed a secondary education and/or having insufficient skills to effectively compete in the job market. These adults now desire to remedy that by improving their basic academic skills and working toward getting a GED or other recognized certificate of educational achievement. Since opening in October 2014, a total of 50 adult students have reported to the ALC. Approximately five students have either been placed in jobs or moved on to the next level in the GED testing process.

Over the course of the last several months, there has been a desire on the part of Pine Street to serve even more students, and to serve different kinds of students. Our partner in education, Tri-County Opportunities Industrialization Center (OIC), was consulted and asked to submit a plan for the ALC for the spring semester. After thoughtful discussions, the Session accepted a proposal from OIC to operate the ALC as its satellite. In this new arrangement, Kathleen White will act as the Site Supervisor. Continued

We expect offerings to students to increase and are hopeful that we will be able to attract more students.

Such offerings could include English as a secondary language, adult basic education, and other possibilities.

Pine Street is blessed with exemplary volunteers whose service and commitment to the ALC has been significant. Kathleen has done a superb job of training and nurturing volunteers from both Pine Street and the community. The ALC has benefitted greatly from their service to this ministry and mission, and the hope is that this new direction will energize and engage our volunteers even more.

The partnership with OIC will last from now through the end of the academic year in June 2016. Following that period, our Session has directed that a team of members evaluate the success of this new arrangement and make recommendations regarding the future of the Adult Learning Center. These are exciting times for the ALC. On the first night of this joint venture, 12 eager students signed up, and hopefully, more are on the way. We are off to a good start!
