The Bacon Tree A group of early settlers heading West got off the Oregon Trail and found themselves lost and running out of supplies. One evening, they camped near a stream, and as it became darker, they saw a campfire a little way up the hill on the same stream. The next morning, they headed out to see who was there. They found a small cave and an old Rabi had made his home there. “We’re lost and hungry, can you help us?”

He thought a moment, then said, “I have very little and can only share the water in this stream, and I know only that there’s a Bacon Tree about a mile West of here along the stream.” They couldn’t pack up and roll out fast enough, the thought of BACON filled their minds. As they went through a small narrow gorge, they were accosted by a band of Walla Walla Indians who were not happy to see them and would have robbed them if they had anything of value. Beaten up and nursing a few wounds, they got out, but the leader of the group went back to the old Rabi with several men, all of them angry. “You said there was a Bacon Tree, and all we found was an Ambush by angry Indians!” The Rabi thought a moment, adjusted his little round glasses, looked up and said. “Oy Vey! Ham Bush, Bacon Tree, who knew?”

“Can America’s Racial Woes Be Fixed” Many of the columns I write face a conundrum; some of the newspapers they appear in carry them within a few days of me sending them in, while some do so nearly two weeks later. Thus, I often worry that what I write, relevant when it comes off the pen, may be old news by the time it lands in the driveway. That will not be the case here. Our fair land is currently in the paroxysms of racial strife; people are protesting in the street, and officers are being hunted down and killed without consideration of whether of not they have ever so much as thought a racist thought. Two weeks will not change that dynamic; there will merely be new items to fill the shopping cart of racial tension that is well nigh overflowing.

John 8:48 Then answered the Jews, and said unto him, Say we not well that thou art a Samaritan, and hast a devil? When people wanted to insult Jesus in the vilest way they could think of, they did so by calling him a Samaritan. They put that in the same category as demon possession. John 4:9 says, “Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans.” The Samaritans were a hated, despised race of people, their very name was an insult. Yet today no one ever hears the word Samaritan without thinking of the word “good.” What happened?

went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. And on the morrow when he departed, he took out two pence, and gave them to the host, and said unto him, Take care of him; and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will repay thee.” When one Samaritan put hatred aside, pushed past racial barriers to help another in need, carried him to safety, and paid the bill, the reputation of an entire race of people changed forever. It did what shouting and shooting and hating and cursing and complaining and insulting could never have done.

Whites need to make themselves Samaritans to blacks. Blacks need to make themselves Samaritans to Luke 10:30-35 says, “And whites. We need to follow Jesus answering said, A Can it be fixed? Is there certain man went down from the example of the Christ anything that can be done? who gave this account; for Jerusalem to Jericho, and he himself shortly thereafter fell among thieves, which Yes. stripped him of his raiment, laid down his life for us all. and wounded him, and Some of the greatest racial Pick up the tab for a black departed, leaving him half strife ever known was in full dead. VA Helps Cut Rate Of Veteran Suicides The rate of veteran suicide is down ... slightly. For many years, we were losing 22 veterans every single day. By 2014, based on analysis of 3 million records from 1979 to 2014 from all 50 states, that number is down to 20. The results of the research show that: * Veteran suicides account for 18 percent of all suicides, but veterans make up only 8.5 percent of the population. * In 2014, approximately 65 percent of veterans who died from suicide were aged 50 years or older. * Since 2001, veteran suicides increased 32 percent while civilian suicides rose 23 percent. * Veterans who used Department of Veterans Affairs services had an 8.8 percent suicide rate increase, while among those who didn’t, rates surged 38.6 percent. Broken down by gender, the rates show that male veterans who didn’t use VA services had a 35 percent increase in suicides, while the rate among female veterans soared a whopping 98 percent. Those numbers are

staggering and carry a strong message: Say what you will about using the VA for care, but the numbers don’t lie. Treatment via the VA helps lower the rate of veteran suicide. Here are a few of the warning signs of suicide: increasing use of drugs or alcohol, withdrawing or feeling isolated, talking about seeking revenge and displaying extreme mood swings. For veterans or family and friends of veterans in trouble, the Crisis Line at 1-800-273-8255 (press 1) can help. Or go online to www.VeteransCrisisLine. net or text 838255. Access to mental-health crisis intervention is immediate when you make contact. The Crisis Line has handled over 2.3 million calls, 289,000 chat room connections and 55,00 texts. It dispatched emergency services 61,000 times. If you or a veteran you know shows signs of being in danger of suicide, don’t hesitate. Get help now. (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

PEEP TALK ! You don’t ever have to worry about anyone ceasing to read the Piedmont Shopper. My uncle, Henry D. Hopkins, is 87 years old & he goes somewhere to get a stack of them each week. He delivers them to the nursing home, and to his friends in his neighborhood. He makes sure everyone gets a copy every week! He and his wife Shirley love to share it and laugh at the jokes and stories. That paper is the heartbeat for a lot of people! My daughter, Ruby, sells Scentsy and she has used your paper for many occasions. She knows that is the one paper that everyone reads! Our church, Central Boulevard Church of God, just used your paper for our Vendor Spring Fling on 4/11/15, and I am sure half or more of the people came because of the Shopper!” -Deborah Severt

“Thank you for your free service, had a great yard sale.” -Terri Lovell

“My experience with Judy Bryant at the Piedmont Shopper: I have worked with Judy for over 7 years and she is always willing to do whatever I ask of her. Sometimes I send an ad in late and she manages to get it in for me. I receive many applicants from my advertisements in the Piedmont Shopperit reaches so many people in our area each week. Thank you, Judy, for your hard work!” Vicky Miller - HR Piney Forest Health & Rehab Center

“The Piedmont Shopper is the BEST route to go for advertising your business. They’re professional, fun & truly take care of their clients. I use them for ALL of my advertising & will continue to do so.” Tammy Wiles Owner • Perfect Body Fitness Center & Sports Complex “I mainly run classifieds in the Piedmont Shopper several times throughout the year. I ALWAYS sell what I’ve listed and sell it FAST! I’m very PLEASED with the Piedmont Shopper and will CONTINUE to use them in the future.” Hubert Inman • Piedmont Shopper Classifieds User • Danville, VA

“You sold a walker for me, thank you!” -C.C. Moore, Danville

“People ask me all the time to advertise in their media and my answer is always no. My reason to them is I spend all my advertising dollars I can with the Piedmont Shopper. We get the most results from them due to their loyal readers and awesome staff. Lesley Tucker took us from a non existent business to a successful well know business in less than a year. Her insightful ad designs pop off the page and have the customers walking through the door. “ Dustin Pierce - Owner - C&D Family Pawn

“The Piedmont Shopper is a GREAT way for us to advertise. All I need is an idea and they take care of the rest. Judy Bryant is the BEST! Her expertise, professionalism and personality make it a pleasure to advertise in the Piedmont Shopper.” Ed Whitlow • Owner Danville Appliance We at Gina’s Family Restaurant LOVE the Piedmont Shopper. Renovations for Senior Safety As adults approach their golden years, the homes they once thought of as sanctuaries can become unsafe. Families wrestle with the decision to keep parents and grandparents in their homes or move them into assisted living facilities or other senior residences. Modifying seniors’ homes to make them safer is another option. The National Institute on Aging says that families may be able to have a senior stay at home by helping older relatives remain independent but safe. The following are a few ways to do just that. • Remove fall hazards. The NIA reports that six out of 10 falls happen at home, where people spend the most time and fail to think about their safety. Seniors who want to be independent may overestimate their physical abilities. Because falls can be so dangerous, leading to cuts, abrasions, broken bones, and more, seniors and their families must take steps to prevent falls in homes. Improve lighting, especially at night when sight may become diminished. Install hand rails and grab bars where possible. Pick up clutter and remove tripping hazards, such as slippery rugs or electric cords. Install an electric stair climbing seat to make traversing stairs less risky. • Improve visibility and ability to communicate. Vision loss may accompany aging, but technology can help mitigate such losses. Use big-button phones, remote controls and even keyboards so seniors can keep in touch. Voice-activated thermostats or smart home technology also can make it easier for seniors to voice their needs. • Modify fixtures and other features. Dexterity may wane with age, and arthritis can make grasping or turning doorknobs and faucets more challenging. Take inventory of areas of the home that present the biggest obstacles to seniors. Replace knobs in the shower or on faucets with lever handles, which are easier to maneuver. Install new cabinets and doors that freely glide open and self-close. Replace toggle light switches with easier paddle-type switches that can be pushed with a hand or even arm. Motion-sensor lights also can be handy. Push-button oven controls may make cooking easier. • Prepare for medical emergencies. Invest in medical alert systems, such as necklaces or bracelets, that can be used to contact police or emergency medical personnel directly. Make phones available in commonly used rooms in the home, such as bedrooms, the living room, bathrooms, and the kitchen. • Install ramps and nonslip flooring. Ramps can make it easier to reach the front door or cross over elevated doorway thresholds. Nonslip flooring also can prevent falls around the house, offering more traction for feet, walkers or canes. • Repair cracks in walkways and driveways. Safety should also extend to the outdoors. Be sure to repair cracks or uneven pavement. Replace loose patio blocks or bricks with a more stable design or with concrete or asphalt. While outdoors, trim back bushes and make sure there are no tripping hazards outside as well. A few modifications can make it possible for seniors to live comfortably in their homes for many years.

Mexican Street Corn With Chile & Lime Ingredients 1/4 cup mayonnaise 1/4 cup sour cream, Greek yogurt or Mexican crema 1/2 cup finely crumbled cotija or feta cheese, plus more for serving 1 tablespoon garlic powder 1/2 teaspoon ancho or guajillo chili powder, plus more for serving 1/4 cup finely chopped cilantro or parsley leaves and tender stems 4 ears shucked corn 1 lime, cut into wedges Directions 1. Prepare a fire in your grill according to manufacturer’s directions. When all the charcoal is lit and covered with gray ash, evenly spread out coals over half of the coal grate. Alternatively, set half the burners of a gas grill to high heat. Set cooking grate in place, cover grill and allow to preheat for 5 minutes. Clean and oil the grilling grate. 2. While the grill heats, combine mayonnaise, sour cream, yogurt or crema, cheese, garlic and chili powder, and cilantro or parsley in a large bowl. Stir until well-combined and set aside. 3. When grill is hot, place corn directly over hot side of grill and cook, rotating occasionally, until cooked through and charred in spots on all sides, about 8 minutes total. 4. Transfer corn to a bowl with the mayonnaise mixture. Use a large spoon to evenly coat corn on all sides with mixture. Sprinkle with extra cheese and chili powder. Serve immediately with lime wedges. Makes 4 servings. *** Angela Shelf Medearis is an award-winning children’s author, culinary historian and the author of seven cookbooks. Then slip the loops around your smartphone at the top and bottom. This is effective for tying up the phone when using a radio app or your GPS navigation. As always, pull over to make phone calls or to text. * Dollar-store baskets that are meant for craft supplies or as shower caddies make excellent fast-food holders for road trips. Burger, fries and a shake can fit nicely in the compartments, and they are more lap-friendly. * Hang a tennis ball from the garage ceiling to where it will hit your

So, when I get home from the grocery store, I immediately cut up and prep all the fruits and veggies that need it, and store them in plastic containers in the fridge. They are easy to see and convenient to snack on.” -- R.C. in Oregon
