Comedian Convention Someone brought a visitor and the new fellow sat fascinated as the funnymen shouted out numbers: "56!" "923!" "307!" Each time a number was called, the others would laugh and laugh.

Chinese Wood Floor Manufacturer Will Create 100 Jobs Over ThreeYear Period DANVILLE – The Regional Industrial Facility Authority and the Industrial Development Authority of Danville announce that Zeyuan Flooring International Corp. is locating its first United States manufacturing facility in Cane Creek Centre. The company will invest $15 million and employ 100 people over a three-year period. The Regional Industrial Facility Authority is providing Lot 8 in Cane Creek for the Industrial Development Authority of Danville to build initially a 40,000 square-foot building for the project. This lot is located behind GOK International on Cane Creek Parkway. It will take approximately nine months to build the facility. “To manage expectations, it should be noted that it will take some time to execute documents and leases, grade the site and build the facility before the majority of the people can be hired. While the new building is being constructed, the company initially will operate out of GOK International next door with a small staff,” said Danville City Manager Joe King. Andy Yang of GOK International at 434-791-2100 will be the contact person for job inquiries while the factory is being built in Cane Creek since GOK will be helping Zeyuan Flooring with product distribution and sales during the time period. This start-up process will require a small number of employees. For the past 15 years, Zeyuan Flooring has been a processor of solid wood flooring in China. Zeyuan owns a modern wood drying kiln, with more than 1.5 million square meters capacity. The global sourcing network of carefully selected raw materials, a short production cycle, and strict quality management provide customers with timely and stable quality products. Zeyuan Flooring products include several styles of solid wood flooring, wood composite series, bamboo flooring and parquet flooring. The products will be exported to Canada, Europe and other countries, and sold throughout the U.S. The company will be actively developing new products and providing personalized service and sample processing, while continuing reasonable pricing to meet customer requirements. “We initially thought about locating our manufacturing plant in Los Angeles since everybody in China knows about this area. Kevin Liao of GOK International and Danville officials made a great case based on location and resources that Danville was a better choice for us. We have been overwhelmed with the level of support and kindness that everybody has shown us,” said Zeyuan Flooring CEO Sindy Cui. Liao, president of GOK International, provided the company lead to the region through his vast network in China. Liao and Danville officials met with the company for the first time in April. A second visit occurred in June with Danville City Manager Joe King touring the factory in Tianjin to solidify the relationship and conduct due diligence. Zeyuan Flooring company officials have been visiting Danville since early October to explore the region, set up accounts and sign the necessary paperwork to locate in Cane Creek Centre. Mayor Sherman Saunders, chairman of the Danville Pittsylvania County Regional Industrial Facility Authority, said, “The owners of Zeyuan Flooring are the most delightful people and will be a huge asset for the region for many years to come. Danville has been crafting a great China strategy to bring jobs to our region. It has taken a lot of patience and hard work, but we are starting to see the fruits of our labor.” James Snead, chairman of the Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors, said, “We are excited to have a second Chinese company within a year agree to create new jobs and invest several million dollars in the region. These manufacturing jobs will help re-employ a part of the workforce that needs jobs the most.” Delegate Danny Marshall, also a member of the Tobacco Commission, said, “The Tobacco Commission is all about improving the economy of the regions that it serves. This project is one which the commission was able to support with a $350,000 grant from its Tobacco Region Opportunity Fund, and it is just the kind of project that we need in our community to improve our local economy.”
City Council votes unanimously to create ‘Danville United’
Danville City Council voted unanimously Thursday night to create the Danville United Community Relations Coalition. Council also unanimously approved a separate resolution that established the coalition’s initial bylaws. The coalition now will hold a kickoff meeting on Nov. 14 at the Institute of Advanced Learning and Research. The event will begin at 7 p.m. and include a keynote presentation, member announcements and public comments. Additional information on the kickoff will be made available as details are finalized. The purpose of Danville United is to engage the community in making Danville a more tolerant, friendly, and welcoming community to all regardless of race, gender, religion, creed, ethnicity, nationality, or economic status. The coalition provides a means for networking, information sharing and strategy development. The initial bylaws reflect the consensus of those attending the community meetings held in the last three months regarding the purpose, structure and operation of Danville United. Unlike its other boards and commissions, City Council will not exercise membership appointment authority for Danville United. Membership is open to all individuals and organizations. Danville United will have no regulatory authority and will not hear or adjudicate complaints of discrimination. It may provide advice to City Council, but will neither oversee municipal operations, nor attempt to direct activities of member organizations. The Strollin’ Colon, an inflatable interactive colon that people can walk through and see what the inside of a healthy and cancerous colon look like was presented in the Danville Science Center Lobby during the River District Festival, October 4 th and 5th, October 5, from 9:30-5:00. The signs on the walls of the model describe the development of cancer as a progression from normal tissue to metastatic cancer. The display signs also provide tips and advice for Colorectal Cancer Prevention. Melanie Vaughan (pictured) and Charlotte Litzenberg, Coordinators of the Cancer Resource Center of Southern Virginia, were available to answer questions and provide additional information to the 130 who viewed the exhibit. The exhibit was provided through the generosity of Sanofi and in partnership with the Danville Science Center. The Cancer Resource Center is funded by VCU Massey Cancer Center through a grant from the Virginia Tobacco Indemnification and Community Revitalization Commission.

The other teams put up a good fight. Money Totals are not available yet because an online auction is going on and money is still coming in from other sources. The folks from Commonwealth Documents were also on hand early in the morning to shed any documents that attendees may have that needed to be destroyed. Door prizes were given away as well. All in all it was a good day. We will begin working on game number 9 now.

Robert Daniel Arnold, Sr., 82, of 821 Albert Edmonds Road, Ringgold, VA died Tuesday, October 15, 2013 at Stratford Rehabilitation, Danville. He was born January 27, 1931 in Pittsylvania County to the late Lillian Poore Arnold and the late Milton H. Arnold. He was married to Edna Mae Brummitt Arnold, who preceded him in death. Mr. Arnold worked as a supervisor at Dan River Mills, Inc. He is survived by his daughter Susan A. Kirks and husband, Harold, of Ridgeway, VA; his son Robert Daniel Arnold, Jr. of Ringgold, VA; his grandchildren Joshua Snider of Dry Fork, VA, Rebekah Kirks of Ridgeway, and Bethany Kirks of Ridgeway. In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Arnold was predeceased by his daughter Judy Arnold Rea. Frances Herndon Dix, age 72 of 156 Forestdale Place, Apt 208, Danville, VA passed away Wednesday, October 16, 2013 at Danville Regional Medical Center, Danville. She was born Nov. 5, 1940 in Danville to the late James Harvey Herndon and the late Cleo Herndon Richie. Mrs. Dix was married to the late Thomas Gwyn Dix. She was of the Baptist faith. Frances served her family greatly as a homemaker. Mrs. Dix is survived by a daughter Susan Faw: two sons; Gayland Dix and wife Sherry of Danville and Greg Dix and wife Jessica of King, NC: two special nieces; Betty Sutherlan and Wendy Keatts: special nephew; Chris Watson a granddaughter; Shannon Bailess. In addition to her parents and husband she was predeceased by one sister Janie Jackson: three brothers; Guy Herndon, Garnett Herndon and Franklin Herndon. A memorial service was

Katherine Virginia Eley Grumbles
Katherine Virginia Eley Grumbles, passed away, Thursday, October 17, 2013 at Roman Eagle Rehabilitation and Health Care Center. Katherine was born in Victoria, Virginia on June 11, 1924, a daughter of the late George Fenton Eley and Mary Bradshaw Eley. She graduated from Thomas Dale High School in 1942 and Mars Hill College in 1944 with an Associate Degree in Vocal Music. She spent many years as an active member of choral music groups including Robert Shaw’s summer music programs and Westminster Choir College. She organized the Danville Boys Choir for the Danville Museum which she directed for several years. She also directed church choirs in Richmond and Lexington, Virginia before moving to Danville. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Danville and served on several committees in the church. She was active in the Dorothea Henry Chapter of DAR where she was a past Regent. She was also active in the Colonial Dames, 17th Century, where she served as a state and a national officer. She organized two different Southside Virginia chapters; one of which is the John Goode Chapter at Boydton, VA, where her membership remained. As State Chairman of the Colonial Dames, one project she led was to place a bronze tablet memorializing Lady Astor of Virginia as the first woman member of the English Parliament. She is survived by her husband, Hunter A. Grumbles; two daughters, Dayle G. Welch and husband Jimmy Welch, of Raleigh, NC and Kathy G. Winstead of Fuquay-
Varina, NC; three grandchildren, Kevin Welch, Meredith Fensler and Virginia Winstead; seven great-grandchildren; her brother, T. Leroy Eley; and several nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the staff of Roman Eagle for their excellent care and kindness during Katherine’s stay there. Memorial Services were held Saturday, October 19, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church with the Reverend John Carroll officiating. Bennie Franklin Guill, Sr.
Bennie Franklin Guill, Sr., 74, of 141 Nelson Ave, Danville, VA, died Thursday, October 17, 2013 at Danville Regional Medical Center after being hospitalized since Monday. Born May 29, 1939 in Danville, VA, he was a son of the late Harry Thomas Guill and Bessie Chattin Guill. Mr. Guill owned and operated the Mountain Hill Mini Mart for 21 years. He was a member of Faith Memorial Baptist Church, and served in the U.S. Army during Vietnam. He was an avid golfer and loved his family dearly. On February 18, 1956, he married June Hedgecoe Guill, who survives. In addition to his wife of the residence include two daughters, Kimberly G. Bailey (John), Kathy G. Adelman (Marc), both of Danville, VA; three sons, Bennie F. Guill, Jr., (Donella) of Dry Fork, VA, Jeffrey D. Guill (Liz), of Blairs, VA, Chris L. Guill, of Danville, VA; a brother, Roy S. Guill, of Danville, VA; and nine grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother, Thomas L. Guill. Funeral services were held on Saturday, October 19, 2013 at 2:00 P.M. from the Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel conducted by the Reverend Daniel Lackey. In lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorial donations be made to Faith Memorial Baptist Church Building Fund. Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel is serving the Guill family with arrangements.

Joyce Anne Miller, 76, of 1164 Franklin Turnpike died, Thursday, October 17, 2013 at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital after a decline in health for the past ten years. Born in Danville, VA on February 9, 1937, a daughter of the late Hubert Sizer and Annie Collins Sizer. Mrs. Miller lived all her life in Danville where she had been employed at various places. She was of the Baptist Faith. Survivors include a son, Bobby Neal, Jr., of Danville, VA; a sister, Juanita Chambers, of Williamsburg, VA; niece, Deborah Chambers; nephew, Tony McDaniel, great nieces, Brandi McDaniel, Megan Turnage, Melissa Smith; great-nephews, Zachary & Dakota McDaniel; friends, Jennifer McDaniel, Kristi Brizendine, Jackie Milam, and Bobbette Jordan. He was a member of Schoolfield Baptist Church. Mr. Arnn served his country in the US Air Force. John was owner/ operator of Executive Aviation for 27 years at the Danville Regional Airport. Fletcher of Danville, VA; nine grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; two step grandchildren; two step great grandchildren; two step great-great grandchildren; and a numerous host of niece, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by one daughter, Olivia H. Broadnax, three sons, Curtis O. Hunt, Jr., Wilbur H. Hunt and Willard E. Hunt, “The Twins,” six sisters, Mable Dawson. Eva W. Jones, Lillian Willis, Hallie Gwynn, Lola Martin and Thelma Phillips and four brothers, Edward Turner, Eugene Turner, Lofton Turner and Robert Turner and one grandchild, Anthony Moore.

Carole Lowrance Stephens of 80 Lake Heron Drive died Saturday, October 19, 2013 at her residence after a decline in health. She was born in Columbus, GA on December 29, 1943, a daughter of the late Roy Malcolm Stephens, Sr. and Lucile Balkcom Stephens. Miss Stephens lived in Richmond until 1998 and returned to Danville to help take care of her parents. She retired after 32 years as a social worker with the City of Richmond. Miss Stephens was a member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church. She was a graduate of George Washington High School, Danville and Mary Washington College. Besides her parents she was predeceased by a brother, Roy M. Stephens, Jr. who died in 2003. She is survived by one sister of the home; Kay Mouring Stephens, two nephews, Kent T. Scott and Carter P. Scott both of Leesburg, VA, godchildren, Terrell Bradley, Shauntiqua Baldwin, La’Markus Baldwin, and Jamarius Baldwin. Born in Danville, VA on December 3, 1944, she was the daughter of the late Earl and Barbara Franks. She lived in Danville her entire life and was dedicated to her parents who
she cared for prior to their deaths. She was most proud of being part of the housekeeping staff at Averett University prior to her death. She is survived by four brothers, Jerry and his wife Mary, Victor, and Perry and his wife Jami, all of Danville, and Bobby and his wife Deborah of Chesapeake, VA. She is also survived by two nieces, six nephews, and several great nieces and nephews. The family will host a memorial service on Thursday, October 24, 2013 at 6:30 PM at Perry and Jami’s home, 169 Lewis Lane, Danville. The family will receive friends at the home after the service. Ingredients 1 c butter flavored crisco shortening 1 c sugar 1 c firmly packed brown sugar 1 tsp vanilla extract (just pour it in) 2 eggs, beaten 1 c peanut butter (i put an extra hunk in) 2 c all-purpose flour 2 tsp baking soda 1 tsp salt Directions 1. Preheat oven to 350° 2. Cream shortening, sugars, and vanilla extract. 3. Add beaten eggs, and beat thoroughly. (Just throw them in, don’t beat first) 4. Stir in peanut butter. 5. Combine dry ingredients; stir into creamed mixture. 6. Using big scoop, place 6 level scoops on ungreased air bake cookie sheets. 8. Press with back of fork dipped in milk to make a crisscross design. 9. Bake at 350° for exactly 14 minutes. Set your timer. 10. Remove from oven & let cool on cookie sheet for at least 5 minutes. Then transfer to wire cooling rack until completely cool.
Aunt Ro’s Baked Beans “Easy to make using a variety of canned beans, this recipe combines butter beans, pinto beans, pork and beans, and chopped onion with traditional seasonings for rich, savory baked beans.” INGREDIENTS: 8 ounces bacon 1 pound ground beef 1/2 cup chopped onion 2 (12 ounce) cans pinto beans, drained and rinsed 2 (15.5 ounce) cans canned butter beans , drained and rinsed 2 (15 ounce) cans canned baked beans with pork 1 cup barbeque sauce 1 cup ketchup 1 cup brown sugar, packed DIRECTIONS: 1. Place the bacon in a large, deep skillet and cook over medium-high heat until evenly brown. Drain on paper towels, crumble, and set aside. Drain bacon fat from the skillet. 2. Using the same skillet, cook the ground beef and onion over medium heat, stirring until the meat is no longer pink, 5 to 7 minutes. Drain. 3. Transfer the ground beef to a slow cooker. Add the pinto beans, butter beans, baked beans with pork, barbeque sauce, ketchup, and brown sugar to the ground beef mixture; stir to blend well. Cover and cook for 4 hours on High. Top each serving with crumbled bacon.
