Russell Edward Randall

Russell Randall 75 of Staf ford, Virginia, formerly of Danville, died Friday March 1, 2013 at Mary Washington Hospital. Russell was an avid guitar player playing for over 60 years. Russell is survived by his loving wife Roberta as well as his daughter Sharon Smith and two sons Russell Randall (Susan) and James Randall he is also survived by his 6 grandchildren. Dennis Hermon Deering

Dennis Hermon Deering, 84 of 1600 River Ridge Road, Danville VA passed away at his residence surrounded by his family Tuesday, February 26, 2013. He was born April 26, 1928 in Pittsylvania County to the late Daniel Harrison Deering and the late Ollie Davis Deering. Mr. Deering was married to Mae Frances James Deering of the residence. He worked for Cloverdale Lumber Company. In addition to his wife he is survived by ten daughters: Joyce Jefferson (Ralph), Yvonne Goode (John), Arlene Gardner (Reggie), Delois Jones, Angela Deering, Sandra Elliott (Dana), Brenda Allen (Horace), Pam Waller (Mike), Amy Flood (Larry) and Sharon McCants (Brian); two sons: Mark Deering (Michele) and Gary Deering (Loida); four sisters: Lavern D. Roher, Geneva Wright, Lois McCoy and Kathleen Gilmer; one brother, Daniel H. Deer-

ing, Jr. (Ann); twenty three grandchildren and 4 greatgrandchildren. In addition to his parents he was predeceased by one brother, Delaware Deering and one son, Calvin Deering. Charles “Chuck” Wesley Wright, III

Charles “Chuck” Wesley Wright, III, 66 of Danville, VA passed away February 26, 2013 at his residence. He suffered from lung cancer, and the efforts of the medical community in Danville allowed him the time to spend with his loved ones before he passed away. Chuck was born October 21, 1946 in Topeka, Kansas to Charles Wesley Wright, Jr. and the late Alice Clare Wright. In 1968 he married Sherri Borger after they met at the University of Kansas. They had two sons Cary and Alex Wright. His favorite family moments were summer camping trips in northern Wisconsin and Minnesota, more recent summer trips to Wrightsville Beach, NC, and attending his sons sporting and Scouting events. Chuck worked for Goodyear Tire and Rubber for 44 years. He started work in the Topeka, Kansas plant before moving with his family to Highland Park, IL; Sun Prairie, Wisconsin; and finally retiring from the Danville, VA plant in 2012. He always enjoyed the challenges of Goodyear and loved his coworkers in all areas of the plant. The National Guard was a significant part of Chuck’s life. He served for 27 years and attained the rank of Colonel in the Infantry, finishing his service as the

commander of the I-116th Infantry in Roanoke, VA. Some of his favorite moments came from National Guard summer camp experiences with his infantry unit. Chuck’s sons loved to play soccer, and he volunteered to help as a coach, as the President of the Danville Soccer Club for 20 years, a referee and a referee instructor. He officiated games for seven year old recreation players to local high school games all the way to the 1999 World Special Olympics in Raleigh, NC. He has trained most of the referees in the western half of Virginia who are currently working. The Boys Scouts of America has been a tremendous beneficiary of Chuck’s leadership. As a youth member he attained the rank of Eagle and was a Vigil Member of the Order of the Arrow. Chuck served as a Cubmaster for his two sons in Wisconsin, and also for his grandson Nicholas here in Danville. He was an adult leader for several years for local Troop 354 with Max Lassiter, and most recently was the District Chairman for the Dan River District of the Blue Ridge Mountains Council. In 2012 Chuck also received the Silver Beaver Award, Scouting’s highest adult honor. Chuck also was a longtime member and leader at Ascension Lutheran Church in Danville, the Grove Park Pool, a member of American Legion Post 1097 and the National Rifle Association. He is survived by his brother Doug Wright of Topeka KS, his sister Catherine Howard of Lecompton KS, his wife Sherri Wright of the residence, his son Cary Wright and wife Rhonda from Danville, and his son Alex Wright and wife Lori of Alexandria VA. Chuck has one grandson in Danville, Nicholas Wright, and one granddaughter Tiffany Shaekley of Tacoma, Washington. A Memorial Service will be held Sunday, March 10 at 2 pm at the Mt. Hermon Chapel of Norris Funeral Services. The family will be at the residence of Cary Wright, 130 College Avenue, Friday evening March 8, and a more formal visitation will be at Norris, Mt. Hermon Chapel, Saturday March 9, from 6 pm until 7:30. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Scouting Endowment Fund. Mary Hopkins Barksdale

Mrs. Mary Hopkins Barksdale, age 83 of 292 Turpin Street, died Tuesday afternoon after a decline in health for several years. Mrs. Barksdale was born on August 27, 1929 in Burlington, N.C., a daughter of the late Irvin Franklin Hopkins and the late Novella Rigsby Hopkins. She had lived the past fifty years in Danville where she was a devoted and active member of Shelton Memorial Presbyterian Church. She volunteered for many years at Danville Regional Medical Center and served as a victim advocate for DOVES. She was a member of the Eastern Star for over fifty years and was the last survivor of her generation. She was married to Harry Hayes Barksdale, Sr., who predeceased her on July 6, 2006. Mrs. Barksdale is survived by five children, Harry Barksdale, Jr. and wife Elizabeth of Farmington, Utah, Charles Barksdale and wife Jamie of Danville, VA, Donna Cooper and husband Gerald of Java, VA, Cathy Alderson of Danville, VA and William Barksdale and wife Paula of Sterling, VA. Also surviving are sixteen grandchildren and six great grandchildren. A Graveside Service was conducted at 2:00 pm Friday, March 1, 2013 in Highland Burial Park with the Reverend Paul Johnson officiating. The family request in lieu of flowers, donations to be made to the Danville Life Saving Crew, 202 Christopher Lane, Danville, Va. 24541. Bobby Lee Wyatt

Bobby Lee Wyatt, 56, of 107 Matthew Circle, Danville, VA died Wednesday, February 27, 2013 at Danville Regional Medical Center after being in declining health for several years. Mr. Wyatt was born in Danville, VA on September

1, 1956 a son of the late Marion Henry Wyatt and Nannie Yeatts Wyatt Ford. He lived his entire life in Danville and retired as a Sub Contractor installing Siding for thirty years. He was of the baptist faith, and was an avid nascar racing and baseball fan. He is survived by two daughters, Bobbie Ann Soukup, of Wilmington, NC, and Amy Leigh Metzger, of Virginia Beach, VA; two brothers, Ronald L. Wyatt, of the residence, and Larry W. Wyatt, of Providence, NC; and a sister, Vicky W. LaRue, of South Boston, VA. He was predeceased by a sister, Evelyn Satterfield. In honor of his wishes, there will be no formal funeral service. The family suggests memorials may be made to the Mount Hermon Fire & Rescue, 4268 Franklin Turnpike, Danville, VA 24540. Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel is serving the Wyatt family.

Roger Edward Cobbs

Roger Edward Cobbs, 69, of 192 Clarks Mill Road, Danville, VA died Friday, February 22, 2013 at Wake Forest Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, NC. Born November 16, 1943, in Pittsylvania County, VA, he was the son of the late Willie Cobbs and Lacey Fitzgerald Cobbs, who survives. He was married to the late Janie Cobbs. Survivors include one daughter, Brenda Cobbs of Danville, VA; one stepdaughter, Gwendolyn Clark of Danville, VA; three sisters, Emma Glass of Danville, VA, Mary L. Fitzgerald of Blairs, VA, and Lorene Glass of Keeling, VA; six brothers, Willie Cobbs, James Cobbs, Robert Cobbs, Jimmie Cobbs and Clyde Cobbs, of Ringgold, VA and Lawrence Cobbs of Keeling, VA; and a host of other relatives and friends. In addition to his father and wife, he was predeceased by one son, Roger E. Cobbs, Jr. Graveside services were conducted Friday, March 1, 2013 at 2:00 PM from Highland Burial Park with Rev. Lawrence Carter officiating. Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home is assisting the Cobbs family.

Gladioua Payne Jones

Gladioua Payne Jones, 64, of 351 Little Creek Court, Danville, VA, died, Sunday, February 24, 2013 at the Riverside Health Care Center. Born October 11, 1948 in Pittsylvania County, VA, she was the daughter of the late Sam and Mary Keen Payne. She was married to Jerry Jones. In addition to her husband of the residence, survivor includes two daughters, Renesha Jones (Chavez Farmer) of Danville, VA and Tramaine Conner of Henrico, VA; three sisters, Roses Adams (Charlie), Geraldine Morton (James) and Ethel Hutcherson all of Danville, VA; one brother, Michael Payne of Danville, VA and a host of other relatives and friends. In addition to her parents she was predecease by two sisters, Delphine Womack and Gloria White; two brothers, Bishop E. L. Payne and Sam Samuel Payne, Jr. The family will receive friends at the residence of her sister, Geraldine Morton, 320 Little Creek Rd, Danville, VA. Funeral services were conducted on Saturday, March 2, 2013 at 12 Noon from Greater United Apostolic Church with Elder Grady Payne officiating. Thomas Bernard Lambert

Thomas Bernard Lambert, 81, of 186 Robinwood Place, Danville, VA died Monday, February 25, 2013 at Virginia Baptist Hospital in Lynchburg, VA. Born February 4, 1932, in Newark, NJ, he was the son of the late Lewis and Anna Lambert. He was married to Ella Jennings Lambert, who survives. He was a veteran of the United States Army and the last of his generation. In addition to his wife, survivors include a host of other relatives and friends. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by one sister and three brothers. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, March 2, 2013 at 2:00 PM from White Rock Baptist Church with Rev. Walter
