T

he adaption of the telecommunication field has led to today’s large handheld cellphones that use the familiar signal letter “G” which stands for “Generation” and reminds us of how far we have come.

The original “1G” is also known as analog which uses radio waves to send information allowing only one way communication.

In 1982, 2G become possible though not released to public till 1991, this generation of communication is split up into 3 subparts with the original 2G allowing regular calls and text messages. A well-known phone from this era was the Nokia 3310. The next level up that came soon after was 2.5G which introduced colored screen cellphones and the flagship phones of that time even had GPRS(General Packet Radio Service) which allowed the phone to take and send photos in messages known as MMS. The flagship phones were also even able to use internet which drew many electronic companies into the field.

Next was 3G which brought Hi-speed internet of speeds as much as 42 Mbps allowing for gaming and video calls. Another great advance in this era was that of cellphone operating systems which began developing in the 2G era.

The big name OS brands originally were both IOS from Apple and Android which caused the iPhone and Samsung’s flag ship phones to quickly rise to the top.

Camera Phone Huawei P9 Plus Now we have come to the era of 4G which allows internet speeds of up to 1 Gbps (though Thailand’s top

speeds are at 300 Mbps) making online communication faster than ever. Today, the main two leadings phone brands have continued to rise above the rest that is iPhone and Samsung. However, with the growing demand of online photo sharing, we have seen brands such as Huawei who partnered with Leica a leading German camera company to make the Huawei P9 one of the best camera phones on the market.

Samsung Galaxy S10+ 5G, Huawei Mate X, Oppo Reno 5G By the end of this year it is expected that we will enter into the new era of 5G which claims increased speeds of as much as 20 times!

We are already seeing debuts of several brand’s flagship 5G phones such as the Samsung Galaxy S10+ 5G, Huawei Mate X and the Oppo Reno 5G.

STEPPING TOWARDS WORLD CLASS STOPPING RECKLESS POLICIES

Prab's Thoughts This is the two sided coin of tourism!! One side is the vast variety of business competition that every business owner in the tourism industry must face.

I

nformation from the Tourism Authority of Thailand revealed that currently Phuket circulates a economic revenue from tourism of 400 Billion Baht with 15 million tourists per year consisting of 4 million Thais and 11 million foreigners. Foreigner’s average stay time is 4.7 days spending nearly 5,000 Baht per day.

“The number of Tourists” Tells us that tourism is growing!

However, those in the business of tourism are concerned as the rate of spending as continued to drop in the past 5 years. 5 years ago, the number of tourists was at 12.5 million per year with each tourist spending on average 7,500 Baht per day which today has dropped by nearly 2,500 Baht.

These numbers make us think….

Where is the revenue we once saw?

As someone who works in the tourist industry I see this a bit differently because I look at the big picture which is that revenue has lowered due to the quality of tourists we bring in today. If we look at just one side we won’t understand much, because an integral part of it all that we must consider is the business competition for tourism has grown in a vast and powerful way influences both quality and quantity of tourists!!

Today we have rooms prices from 300 Baht climbing up to 35,000 Baht for tourists to choose from online. We have street food that can fill you up for 50 Baht and yet at the same time we have 5-star sit-down restaurants that cost over 10,000 or even 100,000 Baht a meal for all the VIPs out there.

“Bang La” street which is the world class walking street of Patong invites tourists to come grab a drink at the same price as locals though a bit more if you like a drink with a nice young lady. If that isn’t enough

there is still much fine entertainment complimented by a variety of world class wine, whiskey and champaigne served in most every bar lining either side of the street.

This is the two sided coin of tourism!! One side is the vast variety of business competition that every business owner in the tourism industry must face. The other side is the option to tourists to make the most out of their investment in their trip.

Today we are back in what is known as the low season and tourists numbers have greatly subsided, tourism businesses must keep there own and wait for about 6-7 months before high season will come back again.

As tourism is the main source of life to Patong and Phuket as a whole, having tourism flow in is equal to the revenue of most every local.

Whatever is an obstacle preventing this flow quickly becomes a problem that everyone must work together to solve and maintain integral development.

Recently, there was a meeting between business owners in Patong to finalize measures to prohibit large buses and public transport from taking the 4029 route between

Katu and Patong between the hours of 16.00-23.00. This is a key measure for Phuket to help lower the frequency of accidents due to the steep grade of the road on this route. The frequent accidents on this route have become a major obstacle for the economic growth of Patong causing restricted flow between Phuket Town and Patong.

The Patong business owners agreed that changing the original prohibited times from 16.00-23.00 to 16.00-19.00 will help allow the group tours a better chance to produce revenue with later access to Patong.

Other issue is that of business owners in entertainment on Patong Beach who have reported the Department of Merchant Tax under the Ministry of Finance for trying to set a 11% monthly tax on merchandise sales in the area.

The business owners see this as too much burden during the difficulty

of pushing through low season sales.

Many owners have complained that they may even have to close shop and leave causing heavy unemployment, social problems and potentially higher crime rates.

As a part of Patong, I would like to tell government officials and those responsible to carefully consider those two issues. Don’t let these recklessly thought up policies to cause problems, listen to the citizens, think of the collateral damage and help this city be the world class tour destination that it is!!! Sorry for being so frank.

อีกเรื่องเป็ นเสียงจากความเดือดร้ อนของผู้ ประกอบการสถานบันเทิงหาดป่ าตอง ทีร่ ะบุถงึ ความพยายามของหน่วยงานกรมสรรพสามิต กระทรวงการคลัง ทีจ่ ะเรี ยกเก็บภาษี 11% จาก ยอดขายในแต่ละเดือนของสถานประกอบการ ซึง่ ผู้ประกอบการเห็นว่า เรื่ องนี ้เป็ นการซ� ้ำ เติมผู้ประกอบการทีก่ ำ� ลังอยูใ่ นช่วงประคองตัว ให้ อยูร่ อดได้ ในช่วงโลว์ซีซนั่ ระบุหากดันทุรังที่ จะจัดเก็บให้ ได้ ผ้ ปู ระกอบการต้ องปิ ดกิจการ หนี จะมีพนักงานตกงานนับหมื่นคน ปั ญหา สังคม อาชญากรรม จะตามมาอีกมาก ในฐานะที่ผมก็เป็ นส่วนหนึง่ ของเมืองป่ า ตอง อยากฝากท่านผู้ว่าราชการจังหวัดภูเก็ต แหละหน่วยงานที่รับผิดชอบ โปรดพิจารณา ทังสองเรื ้ ่ องให้ ถี่ถ้วน อย่าให้ นโยบายที่คิดกัน แบบสุกเอาเผากิ น ไม่ฟังเสียงประชาชนใน พื ้นที่ ไม่ค�ำนึงถึงผลกระทบอย่างรอบด้ าน มา ใช้ กบั เมืองท่องเที่ยวทีต้องการก้ าวสูร่ ะดับโลก เลยครับ..!! ขอโทษที่พดู ตรงครับ!!

D-DAY ANNIVERSARY: PUTIN SAYS LACK OF INVITATION "NOT A PROBLEM"

ussian President Vladimir Putin has said it is "not a problem" that he was not invited to join other world leaders marking the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings in northern France.

Mr Putin, who was invited to the 70th anniversary event in 2014, said he had "enough business" of his own in Russia.

The comments came after his government claimed D-Day was "not a game-changer". Russia often accuses the West of failing to properly acknowledge the Soviet Union's role in World War Two.

nited Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA) have predicted that in 2030, the number of senior citizens in the world will grow to 1.4 billion or 16.5% of the world population. This is an increase from 901 million in 2015 while in the next 3 years for Thailand will be a time entering into the “Aged Society” which means that those over 60 years old will make up 20% of the population in comparison to the current “Aging Society that has only nearly 10% of the population being senior citizens.

It is predicted that Thailand, in 2030 will reach the “Super-Aged Society with over 20% of the population being 65 years or older.

This clearly shows that the future of the senior citizen market is growing and that businesses should focus more merchandise and services towards the elderly as new SME businesses come into the scene.
