FORE! WORD | May 2025

The Golf Professional staff is excited that the 2025 golf season is underway. We all had a long winter with the limited amount of golf we saw in January and February. March had a nice bounce back, and luckily, the simulators kept many of you improving your games. It is always awesome to see the data and get numbers tied to feels.

If you would like to have the golf staff set up a launch monitor to see numbers while practicing outside, please let us know, and we can schedule. The professional staff is available for lessons and club fittings. The ranges are in good shape, and as the weather begins to warm up, the Bermuda will grow in and allow for nice divots to be taken. Please be mindful to take divots in straight lines.

We currently utilize the practice green closest to the road for putting and short game shots. Please use extra care when people are putting and hitting shots. We are working to get the practice green open Memorial Day weekend for putting. Be sure to practice your lag putting with speed control through length of stroke and tempo drills. Set up four golf balls from the cup in line with each other from 3 feet, 6 feet, 9 feet, and 12 feet. Start closer to the hole and work your way back. Putts should finish 12 to 16 inches past the cup for good speed. The longer the putt, the longer and faster your backswing should be with a smooth tempo.

JUNIOR GOLF HIGHLIGHT

Harry Neilly was the 2025 Pamela Fox Invitational boys individual Champion. The event hosted at Merion brings together players from all clubs in the area. Harry’s round was highlighted by an eagle and 4 birdies to shoot 73 and win by one.

If you lift your golf bag and notice its weight, double-check to see how many golf balls are in your bag. Chances are you have way too many in there.

PLAYERS SHOULD NOT HAVE MORE THAN 12 GOLF BALLS IN THEIR BAG AT ANY TIME.

Limiting the amount of balls and discarding balls that are scuffed or worn can help the caddies as they carry your bag, but it also helps with the wear and tear for your bag on the straps, material, and zippers.

Thank you to all members for welcoming Jason Stackhouse to our team and making him feel welcome. In the coming weeks, our class of interns will join our team in early May. If you need assistance with lessons or have questions, please reach out to the professional staff.

We look forward to seeing you soon.

Paul Oglesby PGA Teaching Professional

Paul Oglesby returns to Philadelphia Country Club for his 14th season as the PGA Teaching Professional on Tuesday, April 29, 2025 .

Private instruction, clinics, group lessons, and course instruction can help players understand what to focus on to improve their golf games . Each individual is unique, and there is no one way that we have to swing the club Building a repeating golf swing that hits a consistent shot combined with a sound short game is the aspect that will contribute to shooting lower scores . Paul was a collegiate All-American at Texas A&M University and has competed in two United States Amateur Championships, two United States Open Championships, a British Open Championship, Won the 1994 Pennsylvania Open Championship, and Won two Haverford Trust Classic Championships

He has worked with several players who have won college events and four Korn Ferry events and enjoys assisting players of all ages and skill levels .

TUESDAY LADIES’ GOLF

Opening day was a hit on April 15!

The "Masters" theme brought the perfect day of weather and some great golf! What’s your favorite Masters line? "Hello, friends," "Yes, sir!" "In your life…," or "A tradition unlike any other"?

WGAP

Our WGAP teams have been working hard getting ready for their upcoming matches. Our first Boot Camp session focused on various short game shots to dial in touch and feel. After all, nothing more frustrating for an opponent than seeing your short shots land close to the hole for an easy tap-in!

PRE-SEASON TIP

This is a great time to get your legs and golf fitness back on track. Some stretching, walking, and just swinging a club will go a long way in preparing you for the upcoming season. As we return to golf after a long winter, our short game is one of the first areas we should focus on. Getting your reps to rediscover touch and feel is important, especially around the greens. Consider planning a few 30-minute practice sessions devoted to your short game. Work on distance control with your putter and see how many putts out of ten you can make from 4ft. With your chipper, practice bump runs, and some shots that get in the air. Always focus on a landing point and how you predict the ball will react.

HOPE

- OPERATION: RUNNING FOR HOPE –

HONORING

OUR PATRIOTS

On March 30, I had the privilege of running the Two Rivers Marathon in Lackawaxen, PA, to raise funds for PGA HOPE and support its mission of improving the lives of veterans through the game of golf. Every mile I ran was dedicated to a veteran in the program. It was an incredibly meaningful experience, and I was honored to represent these individuals and their service. My wife, Cathy, and our dog, Bulliet, ran the last mile with me—it was a great way to finish the race!

The Thursday Ladies had a fantastic start to the golf season with our Opening Day event on April 17th! Despite a chilly start, it turned out to be beautiful day. Our Opening Day format was a fun and competitive Team Scramble, and everyone brought great energy to the course.
