A Note from the Club President Charles Curley

The Phillies are 2 .5 games back from the Mets about a month into the season . Here at PCC, I feel like we’re in first place . If you attended the Kentucky Derby party, then you’ll begin to understand what I’m saying For those who missed it, the ladies looked amazing in their sundresses and hats I learned that we hosted about 190 members . Last year, we were happy to get 70 attendees .

We had drinks on the terrace, special Mint Juleps, and some live music We pushed into the Ballroom to see the fastest two minutes in sports . Sovereignty took the favorite, Journalism, on a muddy track . I made some friends and lost some money—that’s how it usually goes .

Treasurer’s Corner

Peter Goodhart

Hi Everyone – Welcome back to Treasurer’s Corner (TC), where we share relevant information related to PCC’s financial performance. We had a strong turnout of over 200 members for our Summer House Town Hall meeting on May 27. We know that our members are highly interested in both the design and cost of the new building on our campus. Please see the email sent from PCC on May 31 for more detail about the Town Hall and a link to the PowerPoint presentation from the meeting.

As I have said in previous TC updates, we are focused on annual operations – funded by dues, and, our capital needs which have been funded through initiation fees, and sometimes, dues. The consultants we are working with at Club Benchmarking provided data that made it clear that from a financial perspective, the best-in-class clubs:

• Budget and achieve breakeven annual operations every year; and,

• Develop a plan to proactively fund and manage capital requirements – both annual capital replacement and capital investment and expansion.

Ryan Kenny and his team, with input from the Finance Committee and Board, are actively working on the first point – annual operations. The second point - the road to proactively managing our capital replacement and capital aspirations is a multistep and multiyear process. The first step is to evaluate our current assets and specifically understand our capital needs.

Club Benchmarking was on site at PCC conducting an inventory the week of May 12 looking at every asset worth over $2500 with a useful life of over 3 years. Everything – including our chairs in the ballroom, the furniture and fixtures in the Bullitt, the new golf course, the pool, the boiler in the clubhouse, our other HVAC units, and everything else we own. This information will be entered into a database where we can track it and proactively plan for replacement. We can also benchmark how well we take care of our assets compared to other clubs. The result will be an annual capital plan where we can detail our 1-, 3-, 5- and 10year capital replacement needs. From that, we can develop the proper plan to fund them.

On the operations side, through April, we are halfway through fiscal 2025 and we continue to be behind on both operations and capital primarily due to the number of new members being behind the budgeted assumptions. That said, Ryan and his team are striving to making the operational budget through expense control initiatives. Though as I pointed out in the April TC, our budget was adopted assuming a $300k loss.

If you have any questions or would like to discuss any of these items, please reach out.

See you at the Club.

Dear Members,

Improving our communication with you has been one of my top priorities this year, and I’m excited to share the results of a comprehensive audit of our communications program at the Club. This deep dive, informed by your feedback and industry’s best practices, has helped us identify key areas for improvement in how, when, and what we communicate with you.

Our goal is simple: to ensure communication is timely, clear, and adds value to your experience as a member. The changes you’ve started to see and those still to come are all part of a broader strategy to keep you more informed, engaged, and connected to the life of the Club.

Here’s what’s ahead:

A Smarter Newsletter Schedule

We’re transitioning to a bimonthly newsletter format, effective July 1. This shift enables us to deliver more thoughtful and comprehensive content, including leadership updates and an expanded preview of upcoming events, to help you plan and maximize the benefits of your membership.

A Refreshed Weekly Update – Plugged In

Plugged In is evolving into a more dynamic and easy-to-navigate weekly email. Expect timely updates on Club happenings, dining features, event reminders, and more, all in a format that’s quick to scan and helpful for planning your week.

An Enhanced Event Registration Platform

Later this summer, we’ll launch Whoosh, a new tool for registering for social events, allowing all event signups to be on one platform. It’s designed to be more intuitive, making it easier to RSVP, view event details, and manage your calendar across all areas of the Club.

Targeted, Personalized Communication Through Opt-In Groups

One of the most impactful outcomes of our communications audit is the development of opt-in interest groups, a key initiative designed to deliver more relevant, personalized content directly to you. By updating your preferences within your member profile, you can choose the areas that matter most to you.

The newest addition to Opt-In Groups will be a Daily Superintendents Report. This report will give you a daily briefing on what to expect before you arrive at the Club.

This approach brings several meaningful benefits:

• Fewer emails, more relevance – You’ll receive targeted content tailored to your interests.

• Better engagement – Stay more involved in the areas of the Club that matter most to you.

• Smarter planning – Programming can be better aligned with member demand.

• Stronger community – Helps us build more connected and enthusiastic member groups.

We strongly encourage all members to update their communication preferences to help us deliver a more catered and personalized experience. Beginning in June, we will start sending targeted emails to members who have opted into specific categories, ensuring you’re the first to know about events, updates, and opportunities that align with your interests.

More Member Feedback Opportunities

We’re also creating more regular opportunities for you to share feedback. Your input plays a vital role in helping us improve and evolve the PCC experience.

These changes represent a significant step forward in delivering communication that is both thoughtful and effective. Thank you for your ongoing support. Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any ideas or questions. We’re always listening.

Regards,

Fitness News

With the summer season upon us, rounds of golf will likely rise (alongside the thermometer!) . A couple of quick tips from a 2022 scientific review published by Matthew Zoffer include:

• Eat before you play, and bring snacks – especially on a round of 18

• Aim for about ½L of water in the 2-4 hours preceding a round . Aim for just under 1L per hour on the greens and include electrolyte supplements

• For every 2 pounds of fluids lost (weigh yourself pre/ post), you should have 1 .25-1 .5L of water after .

• “Smooth” out your game – a number of studies have looked into the relationship between core temperature and cold beverages/smoothies . This may help delay fatigue and keep you feeling fresh on a hot day!

Ready to go supplements:

Philadelphia Country Club will be partnering with Thorne supplements to offer single serve packets of creatine, amino acids, protein, and electrolytes .

Pro Tip of the Month

From Chris Mullin

Rules Refresher

Pickleball Kitchen Confusion? The kitchen (non-volley zone) can’t be entered on a volley That means:

• Your feet must stay behind the line when volleying

• Momentum counts—if you volley and then stumble into the kitchen, it’s still a fault

Stay clear until the ball bounces, then step in freely

Dress Code Reminder

We are now in full summer whites for all racquet sports .

• Tops, bottoms, hats, and socks must be 90% white or more .

• Colored outerwear can be worn offcourt, but must be removed before play begins .

Thank you for upholding PCC’s classic oncourt tradition!

“Split Step = Game Changer”

Whether you’re returning serve in tennis or anticipating a third shot drop in pickleball, the split step keeps you balanced and ready . Make it a habit to split step just as your opponent makes contact—it buys you time, sharpens your reactions, and improves footwork across all racquet sports .

Quarterfinals: Top seeds Chris Longman and Sam Fenwick had a tough start in their opening match, falling behind 0-2 to a local team Ricky Weisskopf and Rich Dodd. But they found their rhythm in game three and rallied to win the next three games. With a late withdrawal, PCC member Nick Krotec stepped into the draw, despite having never met his partner before. The pair put up a strong fight but ultimately were defeated in three tight games. Semifinals: Longman and Fenwick came out stronger in the semis, taking down Christopher Fernandez and Anderson Good in three close games. The second semifinal was a thrilling five-game battle, packed with superb shot making and retrieving from both teams. In the end, the powerhouse duo of John White and Hameed Ahmed edged out David Letourneau and Chris Bown. Finals: White and Ahmed looked unstoppable early in the final, standing at 1-0 up and 10-4 up in game two. But momentum shifted when Longman and Fenwick started to lengthen the points and a few errors started creeping in to their opponents play. With patience and grit, they turned the match around and clinched the title. 8/15, 15/10, 15/12, 15/12.

Golf News

Scott Riley, PGA Head Golf Professional

The opening of the Spring Mill Golf Course has allowed us to return to a 27hole facility once again   Please note that both courses are independent, and a tee time must be scheduled on Whoosh to play on either course .  When making a tee time, please ensure you select the correct course .

The Golf committee will be active in reviewing how the Spring Mill course plays, and we are asking that scores in the GHIN app be posted hole by hole to provide data on how holes are playing For those looking to see event brackets and results on Whoosh, please click the more tab at the bottom and select event results .

When playing on the courses, please be mindful if you are playing music . Per the golf rules and privileges, music should not be heard more than 10 paces from your golf cart or bag   If playing in an event or match, please be sure to discuss with your playing partners or opponents prior to the start of the game and refrain from playing any music that may be an issue .

Warm temperatures can sneak up on golfers, leading to poor performance on the course   Hydration is key, and starting with it the day before you play is vital . Be sure to hydrate throughout the round, replace electrolytes, and make sure to have some food or snacks . The course has numerous bottle-filling stations for you to replenish Playing when it is hot can be difficult on your patience, and if your pace of play is not fast, then you will really be put to the test . As a reminder, all play must be completed in four hours or less .

If inclement weather moves in the Club does have an automated lightning detection system .  When the horn blows it is an immediate stoppage of play and practice  All are required to seek shelter and make their way to the clubhouse .  When playing, mark the location of your golf ball with a tee .  Storms will typically produce at least a 30-minute delay, and the lightning detection countdown can monitored through the PCC app

June is an exciting month for golf events at the course . The Tuesday Ladies host their Member-Guest on June 3 with a 9 am shotgun .  The Men’s Invitational is scheduled for June 12 – 14 . There is a Mixed Twilight scheduled for June 20 at 5 pm For those looking to get some money for clubs, StickX will be on site June 22 to offer shop credit for your clubs

The Club is scheduled to host the 4th of July Extravaganza on Thursday, June 26 .  Please keep in mind that the fireworks show and setup do require some holes to close early and be modified on that day All players will need to be off the golf course and practice facilities by 5 pm on Thursday, June 26.

Note: When making a tee time please be sure to select caddie, cart, forecaddie or walking.
