Philadelphia Country Club was founded in 1890 and operated mainly as a Polo Club during its first years of existence that led to the current horse head logo today. In 1899, the original 9-hole course in Bala hosted the 1899 U.S. Women’s Championship. As golf’s popularity grew, the club’s focus shifted and the club purchased land for an 18-hole course in Gladwyne, Pa., in 1926.
Designed by renowned architect, William Flynn, the Spring Mill Course hosted the 1939 U.S. Open. This Open is remembered as much for Sam Snead blowing the lead on the 72nd hole as much as it is for Byron Nelson winning the title in a three way playoff against Craig Wood and Denny Shute.
In 2003 the Spring Mill Course hosted the U.S. Women’s Amateur won by Virada Nirapathpongporn of Thailand. The club also co-hosted a portion of the 2005 U.S. Men’s Amateur with Merion Golf Club. An additional 9-hole course designed by Tom Fazio was opened to coincide with the 100 year anniversary and was aptly named the “Centennial” course.
The Spring Mill Course is also utilized by the Golf Association of Philadelphia for tournaments on a regular basis. This includes hosting one of their major tournaments in 2017, The Philadelphia Open. PCC’s history extends far beyond golf, however, as the club has hosted the 1930 Davis Cup, and numerous U.S. Open Squash Doubles tournaments with one as recent as 2013.

The club currently has seven members on its Committee on Admissions. PCC also has a Membership Development committee that includes several PCC Members as well as its Membership Director. All proposals for Membership begin with a current Member proposing their Candidate to the Committee on Admissions. The Committee will then post the Candidate’s name for the entire Membership to review and give feedback. The minimum length of time for this posting is 60 days. During this time the Candidate is asked to meet with a few Committee Members for an informal meeting. Before voting on the Candidate’s proposal the Committee will host a formal meeting so the Candidate can meet with the entire Committee on Admissions. After election the General Manager and Membership Director are responsible for an interactive orientation describing the Club’s rich history, culture, and traditions to welcome new members into the community.
Philadelphia Country Club is dedicated to maintaining strong governance and prudent fiscal management to achieve its strategic goals. Operating under a General Manager/COO management model, the club benefits from a clear leadership structure that supports operational excellence and strategic alignment. Our engaged Board of Governors (BOG), with over 100 members involved in various committees, plays a crucial role in guiding the club’s direction. Looking ahead, we aim to diversify our leadership by increasing female representation and identifying new leaders within our membership, while streamlining committee structures to enhance decisionmaking efficiency and uphold transparency, accountability, and member engagement.
Prudent fiscal management remains a hallmark of PCC’s success. In 2022, the club achieved a financial surplus of $900,000, attributed to higher fees, reduced subsidies, and cost savings from unfilled positions. To support upcoming capital projects, such as the renovation of the Summer House and the expansion of dining facilities, the club has increased capital fund contributions from $90 to $160 per month. With a commitment to financial stewardship, PCC continues to invest approximately $2 million annually in maintaining and upgrading facilities, ensuring a high-quality experience for all members while securing the club’s long-term financial health
Philadelphia Country Club has always been aware of the changing demands of membership From evolving into a golf club from a polo club, the Club has, more recently, become a family oriented club with a strong focus on family programs and events. The annual Parent-Child golf tournament, Children’s Halloween Party, Jingle Ball, Santa Brunch, Easter Brunch, among other events, are all family-oriented activities.
The club has also recognized the need for moving into the digital age and has invested in digital communication including social media, website content, PCC Mobile App, email marketing and establishing an overall Brand Platform. The Brand Platform identifies PCC’s unique and differentiating brand attributes, defines brand positioning and articulates a brand story. This heightens overall value for the membership through a consistent brand identity, guides future development of subsequent marketing efforts and drives increased attraction and retention of members Once an established brand has been created, the club appears consistent in its social media efforts, website content and email marketing The Brand Platform informs and supports the efforts of establishing the club as an elevated, luxury experience and place of which to belong

In August 2022, PCC members approved a full-scale restoration of Flynn’s original design, which will include rebuilding of all course bunkers, greens and tees and re-grassing of the fairways.
