LEADERSHIP FINANCIAL SUMMARY
When Marcus L. Urann conceived the idea of Phi Kappa Phi in the 19th century, his motivation was simple. Urann believed that scholars needed more recognition, and he thought an organization devoted to celebrating their achievements might drive them to learn even more.
That’s how the first chapter of Phi Kappa Phi was born at what is now the University of Maine in 1897. We now have approximately 310 chapters in the United States and beyond, with about 100,000 active members around the world. Phi Kappa Phi has grown dramatically since its founding, but its core ideal of recognition for society’s best and brightest minds remains unchanged.
In our respective roles leading Phi Kappa Phi, we’re often reminded of this central tradition when we attend initiation ceremonies for new members. It’s truly inspiring to watch these ambitious scholars as they’re publicly honored for their deep commitment to academic excellence. When someone is noticed and seen in this way, they become more empowered to notice and see others, too.
That’s the real beauty of Phi Kappa Phi. Our members face outward, embracing the possibilities they see in friends, neighbors, and the world at large. It’s why community service is such an important part of Phi Kappa Phi’s tradition, fueling
thousands of volunteer hours across our membership each year to sustain and grow local communities. It’s also why our scholars are tackling research to heal the sick, grow more food, nurture the planet, speed technological revolutions, and spark new insights in the creative arts.
As they do this important work, our scholars have come to rely upon Phi Kappa Phi as a faithful partner in progress. Our members know that the recognition we extend is about more than mere applause. True recognition of society’s best minds means giving them the tools they need to thrive. Each year, Phi Kappa Phi distributes more than $1.3 million in awards and grants to deserving scholars to help them expand the frontiers of knowledge.
These days, Phi Kappa Phi’s leadership stands at a frontier, too. A changing world demands that our national office innovate to better serve its members, and we’re happy, within the pages of this new annual report, to share news about the improvements underway to advance our strategic priorities.
We’re changing to strengthen Phi Kappa Phi for the future, but our guiding principle remains the same one Marcus L. Urann championed in 1897. It’s summed up beautifully in our motto, “Let the love of learning rule humanity.”
Mission
To recognize and promote academic excellence in all fields of higher education and to engage the community of scholars in service to others.
Let the love of learning rule humanity.

Embarking on a journey of self-discovery and cultural immersion, Valerie McMullen, a spirited student from Duquesne University, ventured to the picturesque city of Florence, Italy, during the summer of 2023. Partnering with the University of Pittsburgh’s study abroad program, McMullen's experience was transformative.
In her own words, McMullen reflects on her enriching adventure, “My time abroad was nothing short of amazing.”
One of the highlights of her experience was the opportunity to visit both an international school and an Italian school, bustling with enthusiastic elementary-age children.
In her free time, McMullen immersed herself in the Florentine life, indulging in the culinary delights of Italian cuisine and uncovering hidden gems nestled within the city’s streets.
Yet, her thirst for adventure extended beyond Florence. “I was fortunate enough to visit three additional countries while abroad,” she shares with excitement. Traveling within Italian regions and venturing across international borders, McMullen embraced the opportunity to broaden her horizons and discover new cultures.
One aspect of her journey that resonated deeply with McMullen was the ease and affordability of travel within Italy and beyond. Navigating the extensive network of trains became one of her favorite activities.
Meet Grayson Buning, 2023's 1897 Fellow from the University of Michigan chapter, whose passion for medicine is rooted in personal experience and a profound sense of empathy. Majoring in biopsychology, cognition, and neuroscience, Buning’s journey to becoming a physician is driven by a desire to understand the intricate connections between the mind, body, and environment.
Buning’s inspiration stems from his upbringing, where he witnessed firsthand the impact of health challenges on his mother. “Growing up, I was fascinated by the interconnectedness of the body with the outside world,” Buning shares. “My curiosity was driven, at least in part, by distress: My mom suffers from ankylosing spondylitis, an inflammatory arthritis.”
Through introspection and exploration, Buning recognized the profound influence of stress on his mother’s condition and the inflammatory processes. This realization ignited his passion for understanding the holistic nature of patient care, where individuals are
viewed as more than the sum of their symptoms.
“The mind and body are inextricably linked,” Buning emphasizes. “Patients – and diseases – are more than the sum of the systems that sustain them.”
Motivated by a desire to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others, Buning envisions a career in medicine as a platform for advocating for health equity and embracing a compassionate, patient-centered approach. For him, the heart of medicine lies in the stories of individuals like his mother.
“What draws me to medicine isn’t just the potential to use research and advocacy to reduce health disparities,” Buning reflects. “Nor is it just my fascination with the interconnectedness of a person’s environment to their biological health. The threads that tie these interests together are the stories that underlie them.”
As Buning embarks on his journey toward becoming a physician, he carries with him a deep sense of empathy, a commitment to understanding the nuances of health and disease, and a dedication to empowering individuals to be the authors of their own lives.
2023 PIONEER AWARD RECIPIENT
“Phi Kappa Phi does an amazing job at giving students opportunities to fund their educations from undergraduate studies all the way through their graduate studies. This award will help support me throughout my final year of my undergraduate degree and allows me to keep being a pioneer on my campus.”
2023 LOVE OF LEARNING RECIPIENT
“This award is one of many examples of how Phi Kappa Phi promotes and celebrates the success of its members. With the financial support of this award, I can breathe a bit easier this semester and better focus on my research and studies.”
2023 SABBATICAL RECIPIENT
“I am both excited and honored to receive the Mary Todd Sabbatical Award from The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi. I had a big dream for my sabbatical; this award will make it a reality.”
I FIRMLY BELIEVE THAT THE PHI KAPPA PHI PIONEER AWARD WILL PROVIDE ME WITH THE NECESSARY FINANCIAL SUPPORT TO STAY FULLY FOCUSED ON MY ACADEMICS AND CONTINUE ENGAGING IN EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES WHILE PURSUING MY PASSION IN THIS DIRECTION.”
Isaac Kaba, a determined scholar from the Democratic Republic of Congo and student at The University of Toledo, achieved a significant milestone by being selected as one of the inaugural Pioneer Award recipients in 2023. The Phi Kappa Phi Pioneer Award was established in 2022 to encourage and reward undergraduate members for developing the research, engagement, and leadership skills necessary to become a successful scholar.
Kaba’s journey from Congo to the laboratories of Toledo was marked by a profound commitment to pharmaceutical science and a relentless pursuit of knowledge.
His fascination with drug discovery was deeply rooted in his upbringing, where he observed his grandparents utilizing the healing powers of medicinal plants to treat various diseases. This early exposure fueled his passion for understanding the intricate science behind traditional remedies. Armed with a bachelor’s degree in pharmaceutical science from the University of Kinshasa, Kaba embarked on a quest to revolutionize global health care.
During a hiatus from college prompted by the COVID-19 outbreak, Kaba collaborated with a local professor on a groundbreaking research project. Together, they investigated the biological activities of six plants commonly used in Congo to treat
skin diseases. Their findings, published in the Journal of Biosciences and Medicines , highlighted the potential of these herbal remedies in modern medicine.
Inspired by his research experience, Kaba transferred to The University of Toledo Jesup Scott Honors College to further his education. Under the guidance of Professor Ghassan Abushaikha, he delved into the design, synthesis, and biological evaluation of small molecules for cancer therapy—a field that ignited his passion.
Driven by a relentless pursuit of knowledge and a desire to make a tangible impact, Kaba aspires to pursue a doctorate in medicinal chemistry. His ultimate goal is to advance oncology drug discovery research, contributing to scientific literacy and public engagement in the fight against cancers.
With the support of the Phi Kappa Phi Pioneer Award, Kaba is positioned to continue his academic journey with unwavering dedication, confident in his ability to shape the future of pharmaceutical science and global health care.
“I firmly believe that the Phi Kappa Phi Pioneer Award will provide me with the necessary financial support to stay fully focused on my academics and continue engaging in extracurricular activities while pursuing my passion in this direction.”
PHI
COMMITMENT TO RENEWAL ALSO INSPIRED THE DEVELOPMENT OF A STRATEGIC PLAN TO GUIDE THE SOCIETY’S GROWTH IN COMING YEARS.
When leaders and staff gathered in the courtyard of Phi Kappa Phi’s national office to mark the Society’s 125th anniversary in 2022, the celebration brought a welcome opportunity to reflect on the organization’s hallowed past.
But the landmark birthday also lent momentum to some bold new plans for Phi Kappa Phi’s future. Those plans gained speed in 2023 as the Board of Directors and the Society’s staff collaborated on several ambitious initiatives to sustain and grow Phi Kappa Phi in coming decades.
A key element involves dramatically upgrading Phi Kappa Phi’s ability to track and serve its members around the world. The Society’s current technology for managing membership and engagement, installed a number of years ago, seemed poised for a change. It’s being replaced by a new association management system, or AMS, that offers radically improved capabilities in engaging new members, serving our existing community of stakeholders, and more effectively cultivating the Society’s resources.
The new system, being implemented in phases, required many hours of planning and training in 2023, but the project should be complete this year. Once in place, it will provide more seamless service across Phi Kappa Phi’s membership.
A central component of that service involves enhanced chapter development and support. Technology upgrades at the national office
are meant to complement, not replace, the connections of community that Phi Kappa Phi fosters through its local chapters at campuses throughout the United States and beyond.
Throughout 2023, national office staff worked to better align Phi Kappa Phi’s resources to strengthen training and technical support for local chapters. This spirit of innovation will continue to inform the work of the national office in the coming year.
Phi Kappa Phi’s commitment to renewal also inspired the development of a strategic plan to guide the Society’s growth in coming years. The plan, which draws on the insights of the board, national office staff, and a member survey, affirms Phi Kappa Phi’s key role in “a better world driven by the love of learning.” It underscores the Society’s continuing embrace of excellence, community, service, and inclusivity as core values.
The plan also identifies several strategic priorities for Phi Kappa Phi. They include diversifying and increasing financial support for the Society, raising awareness of Phi Kappa Phi beyond its membership, and continued efforts to strengthen and expand chapter engagement and support. Growing membership by reducing financial barriers to entry is a priority, too.
Clearly, change is in the air at the nation’s oldest and most selective all-disciplinary collegiate honor society. It’s an evolution that should position Phi Kappa Phi to serve its members for the next 125 years.
AS HIS DEPARTMENT CHAIR FOR 14 YEARS AND HIS COLLEAGUE FOR MORE THAN 30, I CAME TO KNOW RICK SHALE’S UNCOMMON DECENCY AND ENTHUSIASM,” GARY SALVNER, A YSU EMERITUS PROFESSOR OF ENGLISH, WROTE IN A TRIBUTE. “HE TREATED STUDENTS AND COLLEAGUES ALIKE WITH RESPECT, AND HE WAS ONE OF THE BEST FRIENDS A COLLEAGUE COULD HAVE.”
After joining Phi Kappa Phi in 1980 at Youngstown State University, where he served many years as a professor of English, Rick Shale became a fixture within the honor society’s community.
Shale served Phi Kappa Phi in many different capacities at the chapter and national level. A gifted photographer, Shale was known for the many pictures he took at Society gatherings. His enthusiasm for taking snapshots pointed to Shale’s enthusiasm for life. Shale was a man who didn’t want to miss anything.
When he died on Feb. 2, 2022, at 75 after a long illness, Shale’s passing prompted grief throughout the membership of Phi Kappa Phi. But thanks to a generous bequest from his estate, Shale’s presence within the Society will continue to be felt for generations.
Shale had no children and was an only child, so at the time of his death, he had no close relatives. His bequest to Phi Kappa Phi, totaling nearly $330,000, has been placed in a Phi Kappa Phi fund that will help support the Society’s award programs for deserving scholars. Each year, Phi Kappa Phi distributes $1.3 million in awards and grants to support the best and the brightest in their scholarship and research.
“As a celebrated professor at YSU, Rick Shale dedicated his life to shaping young minds,” said Bradley Newcomer, Society Executive
Director and CEO. “Thanks to Rick’s profound generosity, that legacy of learning will be extended far into the future. We’re deeply grateful.”
For Shale, learning and teaching were abiding passions. A Youngstown native, he earned a Bachelor of Arts from Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio, and a Master of Arts and a doctorate in American Culture from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.
As a faculty member in the Department of English at YSU, he developed courses in writing, film, and screenwriting. By the time he retired in 2011, Shale had received three Distinguished Professor Awards. He was also a prolific author best known for works about the Mahoning Valley and surrounding counties.
Shale also loved walking, hiking, kayaking, watercolor painting, and travel in the United States and abroad. Above all, he’s remembered for his kindness.
“As his department chair for 14 years and his colleague for more than 30, I came to know Rick Shale’s uncommon decency and enthusiasm,” Gary Salvner, a YSU emeritus professor of English, wrote in a tribute. “He treated students and colleagues alike with respect, and he was one of the best friends a colleague could have.”

In spring 2023, Phi Kappa Phi introduced its Benefactor Program, marking a significant milestone in its commitment to excellence and service. This innovative initiative aims to amplify the impact of the Society’s members and further advance its mission of promoting academic excellence and community service.
At the core of the Benefactor Program lies a profound dedication to nurturing deserving students by increasing award and grant opportunities. With a focus on supporting the Society’s chapters, the program also addresses critical needs at the grassroots level, ensuring the Society’s continued vitality.
Moreover, the Benefactor Program serves as a catalyst for expanding outreach and awareness of Phi Kappa Phi’s noble mission. By creating a strategic roadmap for the future, the program empowers members to actively shape the Society’s trajectory, driving innovation and progress.
Membership in the Benefactor Program is open to life members who seek to deepen their engagement with Phi Kappa Phi. Through a charitable donation of $500, Benefactors play a pivotal role in propelling the Society forward, enabling it to tackle the challenges and seize the opportunities of the 21st century.
By supporting the Benefactor Program, members not only contribute to the enrichment of scholarship and service but also reinforce the foundation of campus chapters, essential pillars of Phi Kappa Phi. This comprehensive approach underscores the Society’s commitment to empowering the best and brightest minds to make a meaningful impact on the world.
To learn more about becoming a Benefactor and joining Phi Kappa Phi in its journey of innovation and service, visit PhiKappaPhi.org/Benefactor. Together, as Benefactors, members are poised to redefine the boundaries of knowledge and leave a lasting legacy of excellence.
Staff members of Phi Kappa Phi’s national office ushered in the holiday season with a tree lighting ceremony that capped an eventful year for the Society.
During the ceremony, which took place on Nov. 27, national office staff assembled outside for several moments of reflection, a holiday sing-along, and the lighting of a special tree in Phi Kappa Phi’s garden.
The tree, now more than a dozen feet tall, has grown from a small sapling planted by national office staff on March 21, 2022, to honor Phi Kappa Phi members around the world who died in the COVID-19 pandemic.
Phi Kappa Phi’s memorial tree is a pond cypress, which is known for its adaptability, resilience, and steadfastness – all qualities at the heart of the Society’s long history. The tree’s reputation for strength has been put to the test since it was planted, proving resolute through wind and storms. A big challenge arrived this summer as record heat and drought strained the Baton Rouge, Louisiana, community where Phi Kappa Phi’s national office is located. A number of the city’s trees succumbed to the drought, and Phi Kappa Phi’s memorial tree showed signs of stress, too. But the tree rebounded well, greening up just in time for the holidays.
To celebrate its survival – and Phi Kappa Phi’s continuing promise in a challenging
year around the world – the Society’s memorial tree was decorated with a simple strand of white lights.
Across many faith traditions and in secular life, too, light is celebrated as a gesture of hope in the winter season.
Phi Kappa Phi’s brightly lit memorial tree, visible to the public, was meant to underscore the Society’s enduring legacy of scholarship and progress, an ideal that transcends hardship and loss.
RITA DOVE (Miami University) was the winner of the National Book Foundation's Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters. Dove has been an award-winning author for 50 years.
ROBERT C. GARNER (University of Maryland, College Park) was named news chief of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center. Located in Greenbelt, Maryland, Goddard is the nation’s largest organization of scientists, engineers, and technologists who build spacecraft, instruments, and new technology to study Earth, the sun, the solar system, and the universe.
ALISON GREGORY (Marymount University) was promoted to Dean of Libraries and Assistant Provost for Special Projects at Marymount University.
ANDREW NG (Carnegie Mellon University) was named to TIME magazine’s list of the 100 most influential people in the artificial intelligence field. Ng founded DeepLearning.AI, one of many innovations he’s advanced to speed the development and application of artificial intelligence.
Brian Maxwell, a senior at Middle Tennessee State University, has faced his fair share of obstacles on his journey to success. Despite a rocky start, marked by a brush with the law, Maxwell’s passion for film never wavered. After 16 years of setbacks, he fulfilled his dream of attending film school through the Buchanan Transfer Fellowship.
Driven by the love for his family, especially his two sons with autism, Maxwell channeled his struggles into empathy for the marginalized. “My work ethic, community service, and general motivation to be a better person are a direct result of my wife and children,” Maxwell said.
He initiated a groundbreaking audio/video class for inmates at the Rutherford County Correctional Work Center, where he was once imprisoned, aiming to provide opportunities for those society often overlooks. “I am desperate to leave this world a better place to anyone society sees as a burden,” Maxwell said.
With unwavering determination, Maxwell aspires to further his education, aiming for a master’s degree in media and entertainment. His ultimate goal? To advocate for the inclusion of video and film production classes in correctional facilities, making a positive impact on society’s most vulnerable. Through resilience, empathy, and a relentless pursuit of excellence, Maxwell exemplifies the power of overcoming challenges and maintaining motivation to create a better world.
Joan Bernstein defied convention by embarking on an academic journey later in life. Despite initially pursuing a commercial degree at her parents’ insistence, Bernstein’s thirst for knowledge didn’t end there. “Exploration is one of the activities that light up my life; discovery is the one that lights up the brightest,” Bernstein said.
Starting as a half-time student at the age of 67, she embarked on an academic trajectory, earning her doctorate degree in literature from The University of Texas at Dallas at the vibrant age of 89. Her educational pursuits, spanning from community college to Columbia University, epitomized the belief that it is never too late to explore excellence.
“Education in any form moves us closer to fulfillment. Learning is the path to being fully human, a path on which it is likely we will recognize and acknowledge the humanity in others.”
For Bernstein, education wasn’t just a means to an end; it was a lifelong pursuit of fulfillment and humanity. With each graduation, she says, her future expanded, filled with possibilities and discoveries. “When I am asked how I am, I say, ‘thriving.’ What is post-graduate life like? ‘Flourishing!’” Bernstein exclaimed.
Bernstein has proved that exploration and discovery know no age limits. In her unwavering pursuit of excellence, she exemplifies the beauty of embracing knowledge at any stage of life.
