LITTLE FREE LIBRARIES The Middle Tennessee State University Phi Kappa Phi chapter collaborated with another campus organization this fall to help spread the love of learning. With the assistance of a $1,200 Phi Kappa Phi Literacy Grant and efforts of the chapter’s student vice presidents and officers, two campus child care centers received Little Free Libraries during the fall semester.

The goal of the project was to help promote the love of learning to children under the age of 5 and to improve access to books for

ALICE DELL’ERA both children and adults. “The Phi Kappa Phi motto is ‘Let the love of learning rule humanity,’ so we’re trying to encourage, of course, in order to learn you need to be able to read,” said project director Sandra Campbell.

Some books were purchased new and others were donated via a book drive. Users of the Little Free Libraries are free to borrow or take books as well as make contributions.

Nathan Wahl, a chapter student vice president, helped construct each library calling the libraries an “opportunity for discovery.”

IGNITING EXCELLENCE Phi Kappa Phi’s Love of Learning Awards are designed to help fund post-baccalaureate professional development for active Phi Kappa Phi members, including graduate or professional studies, doctoral dissertations, continuing education, travel related to teaching and research, career development and more.

Aaron Ragsdale, a music professor at South Dakota State University and 2021 award recipient, used the funds to continue his professional development by attending an international percussion conference — one of the largest gatherings of percussion educators,

performers and professionals devoted to furthering the percussive arts and education.

As a devoted educator, Ragsdale says his professional goals lie “largely in inspiring my students to be lifelong learners in their field and preparing them to pass on the enthusiasm they bring to their chosen field of study on to their subsequent students.”

Ragsdale was initiated in 2016 at SDSU. “The Love of Learning Award program has allowed me to continue my professional development across venues that might otherwise fall outside the scope of support from my institution,” said Ragsdale. “The best part of Phi Kappa Phi is its continued commitment to supporting its community of leaders and learners.”

“Graduating college is an intimidating milestone in any year. Graduating college in the wake of a pandemic is its own beast entirely. With this Fellowship, I have the security of support. I am so grateful to have a community who believes in me and teaches me to believe in myself.”

From the naming of the first class of Phi K appa Phi Fellows almost 90 years ago, the Society ’s award and grant programs have evolved significantly, and 2021 was no different with the addition of four new Bond Fellowships — named for lifelong donors of Phi K appa Phi, Vic toria and L.D. Bond.

The Bond Fellowships enabled the Society to increase its signature initiative from $615,000 to nearly $650,000 awarded annually to members in their first year of graduate study.

The Bond Fellowships reflect the life’s work and generosity of Victoria and L.D. Bond.

Two Victoria Lynn Bond fellowships support the top-scoring nominees in the arts, music and/or literature. Two L.D. Bond Fellowships recognize the top-scoring nominees in the fields of mathematics or information technology.

“Because my special interests are music and humanities, and L.D.’s are in math and information technology, we have directed that our planned gift help students pursuing advanced degrees in those fields,” Victoria Bond said in her 2006 Forum interview.

Victoria Bond was initiated at Wichita State University in 2002 as a graduate student.

Her first reaction on being invited to join the Society was joy, then disbelief. “My first thought was: ‘This is wonderful!’ But then I feared there must have been some mistake, for I was not a traditional student,” Bond said in her 2006 interview. Victoria and L.D.

embraced Phi Kappa Phi’s motto: “Let the love of learning rule humanity,” which included the generous support of the Society’s Fellowship program.

In 2020, Phi Kappa Phi said goodbye to its faithful friends Victoria and L.D. Bond.

Victoria Bond died on July 15 at 76 and L.D. Bond died Nov. 5 at 89. Despite their passing, the legacy of the Bonds will remain alive and well at the Society. “We feel very humbled knowing that we shall live through eternity through a fellowship bearing our names, knowing that long after we are gone, we shall be helping people realize their education and career dreams.”

The Bonds have paved the path to excellence for many members to come. “I am truly honored to receive the Bond Fellowship. This will alleviate the financial burden of graduate school and allow me to focus all my efforts on my studies without worry. I hope to honor the memories of Victoria and L.D. Bond by excelling at my studies in the arts and working towards a successful career,” said Nicole Jowett, 2021 Bond Fellow.

Leslie King spent her childhood illustrating hundreds of stories for fun, usually on the back of paper rec ycled from her father ’s office, but the idea of becoming a professional ar tist didn’t happen until her first year of college during a summer darkroom photography class. “ The processes of chemistr y, light and latent image held so much magic for me, I could not get enough hours with my camera or darkroom time,” said King.

King switched her major from anthropology and transferred to Shepherd University, a small college with a strong photography program.

After undergrad she began to pursue a master’s in fine art at Radford University, where she was initiated as a Phi Kappa Phi member, and that is when she discovered the full potential of image making. The rest was history.

A 2021 Graduate Research Grant recipient, King used the funds to bring her vision to life — turning her studio art project and thesis, “Postcards from the Pandemic: A Pulaski Memoir,” into a traveling exhibition and book. “This is more than a series of fine art photographic prints — it is a chronicle of the visual and experiential moments of living in Appalachia during the COVID-19 pandemic.

This creative research project brings together the collective consciousness of community,” she said.

The project explores methods of photopolymer gravure printmaking, storytelling and community art while maintaining traditional research on historical perspectives of photography during the 1918 pandemic. “This series, steeped in historic process aesthetics, is

an homage to the Photo Secessionists, and some may see it as a subconscious comparison of the 1918 pandemic and life in the coronavirus period,” said King.

With funds from the Graduate Research Grant, King has been able to showcase her project throughout Virginia’s museums and art centers, such as Piedmont Arts and the William King Art Museum. “I hope the series will foster a sense of nostalgia among my viewers, helping to [validate] the human condition we are all experiencing, and inspire others to express their experiences through art,” she said.

King is beyond grateful for the opportunity she has been provided through the Society.

“Phi Kappa Phi has provided me with so much beyond the funding to help realize my artistic vision. It has given me a sense of validation,” she said. “Art and creative enterprises are often subjective — in one space you may win first prize in a juried show, or you may get a rejection notice for the same work. This award gave me confidence to carry on with the project and to share it with a wider audience beyond my university.”

The many friends of Phi K appa Phi have paved the path of oppor tunity for thousands of members through our award and grant programs. Wendell McKenzie is one of those special friends.

McKenzie, who was initiated in 1969 at North Carolina State University as a graduate student, said there was never a doubt in his mind that he would accept the invitation into Phi Kappa Phi. “I knew membership was a distinct honor and acknowledgement of academic development and success,” he said.

At the time McKenzie accepted membership, he was being recruited to join the faculty at NC State, where he continued his career with the genetics faculty for nearly 40 years. During that time, along with his family, he participated in a six-month sabbatical in Sweden. “This ‘study abroad’ was a wonderful international experience for all of us,” he said. So much so that upon his retirement in 2011, McKenzie and his wife, Georgie McKenzie, established a Phi Kappa Phi endowment to support a study abroad student annually. “We continue to happily fund that endowment.”

McKenzie, who first became active at the chapter level, then a national board member, including Society president, humbly says that the real blessing is being able to meet and learn about the enriching experiences of the McKenzie Study Abroad Grant recipients.

Every member, friend and donor of Phi Kappa Phi is a part of the legacy our founder Marcus L. Urann started 125 years ago. When asked what kind of legacy McKenzie would like to leave behind, he recalled being asked that question several years ago and being dumfounded because it was not something he had thought of. Now reflecting again, McKenzie says, “I think my role has been that of a member of a perpetual relay team. Receive the baton, carry it for a meaningful time, pass it on to the successor and so forth, all the while making positive strides. I like to think I was more about process and progress than legacy.”

SOW A SEED OF EXCELLENCE Since 2019, the Council of Students has hosted the Fall Service Project — an initiative encouraging chapters to positively impact their communities through service projects.

The Mississippi State University chapter, alongside the university’s Wildlife Society and Forestry Club participated this year by spearheading a beautification project on their campus. More than 25 students and faculty members worked to clear old plant materials and establish more than $3,000 worth of new shrubs and perennials around a campus building.

Participants also learned proper plant identification, how to pair plants with planting sites and the techniques for establishing native plant communities.

EXCEL X3 Phi Kappa Phi brought home three national awards for its marketing and publishing efforts at the 41st Annual AM&P Network EXCEL Awards. The awards recognize excellence and leadership in nonprofit association media, publishing, marketing and communications.

The Society garnered a gold award in the Promotional Content – Annual Report category for its 2019 Annual Report.

The report, titled “Realizing a Dream,” featured a stunning design with photos and infographics, stories of Phi Kappa Phi award winners and members, chapter happenings and much more.

Also, in the Promotional Content division, the Society’s annual awards mailer, titled “Reaching New Heights,” won a bronze award in the Direct Mail – Single Piece category. The awards mailer is distributed to upwards of 1,200 stakeholders and used throughout the year to promote the Society’s robust award and grant programs which distribute more than $1 million annually.

With a tradition of winning EXCEL Awards for its quarterly magazine, the Forum, this year was no different. Phi Kappa Phi took home a bronze award in the Magazine – Editorial/Opinion category for “Second Thoughts on Second Thoughts,” an essay written by Derek Furr in the fall 2020 edition about teaching during the pandemic.

The competition, which is open to nonprofit and for-profit associations, annually draws hundreds of contestants from around the nation. This year, 240 awards were presented across 82 categories.

CHAPTER SPOTLIGHT The chapter at California State UniversityFresno gained student attention with a clever and timely pumpkin painting event this past fall. This was the chapter’s first in-person campus event since the start of the pandemic.

With more than 40 students in attendance, each participant learned about Phi Kappa Phi, enjoyed some sweet treats and got to let their creativity shine while painting pumpkins.

“Everyone who stopped by and participated left with a smile on their faces. Several students thanked us profusely and said this made their day,” said Debra Neufeld, chapter secretary.

Throughout the year, the Fresno State chapter engages with its campus student

body to increase the Society’s visibility.

In November 2021, the chapter was recognized by the national office for its work and was named a 2021-2022 Platinum Chapter.

“We are honored to be recognized with Phi Kappa Phi’s highest award as it shows that our chapter is contributing to the life of our university in positive ways,” said chapter president Chuck Radke.

Neufeld says the chapter hopes to continue the pumpkin event and make it an annual experience.

IN THE NEWS TANISHQ ABRAHAM (University of CaliforniaDavis) was named one of the 50 finalists for the inaugural Global Student Prize worth $100,000. The 18-yearold Sacramento native and fourthyear Ph.D. candidate joined Phi Kappa Phi when he was 14 years old.

CHARLOTTE HINGER (Fort Hays State University) was inducted into the Colorado Authors Hall of Fame. Her latest novel, The Healer’s Daughter, won a Kansas Notable Book Award and a Will Rogers Silver Medallion, and was a finalist for the High Plains Book Award.

BROOKE HURSH (Florida Institute of Technology) was named a 2021 Astronaut Scholar by the Astronaut

Scholarship Foundation. The recognition signifies she is among the top STEM students in the country.

LESIA L. CRUMPTONYOUNG (Tennessee State University) has been named president of Texas Southern University. She joins TSU from her most recent post as provost and senior vice president for academic affairs and chief academic officer at Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland.

WENDY LAWRENCE (United States Naval Academy) was honored by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs as its featured Veteran of the Day. Lawrence’s lifelong accomplishments as a pilot, astronaut, teacher and more were highlighted on March 1 to launch the VA’s monthlong celebration of Women’s History Month.

IT IS NEVER TOO LATE As full-time parents and employees, going to graduate school wasn’t the easiest task for Catherine and Jeremiah “JJ” McDaniel, but in the end, the achievement was well worth it. The balance between work, school and parenting led to many late nights and early mornings to complete assignments.

“We were each other’s motivation, support and inspirations,” said Catherine McDaniel.

Catherine and JJ obtained their master’s degrees from the University of Maryland Global Campus, where they both held a 4.0 GPA and were initiated into Phi Kappa Phi. Catherine graduated in human resource management and JJ in acquisitions and supply chain management. “Phi Kappa Phi is highly revered and it was a goal from day one to get that recognition. Once we started our master’s degree journey, it turned into a fun competition between the two of us to see who could obtain the better GPA,” said Catherine McDaniel.

When asked what advice she would give parents who are thinking of going back to graduate school, Catherine says not to be scared, ask for help and establish good relationships with your professors. “I want my boys to know that mom and dad worked really hard to achieve a great goal. That through a pandemic, work and the million other directions we were pulled into, we were able to push ourselves to overcome everything.”

The McDaniels are high school sweethearts, have been married for 10 years and currently reside in Herndon, Virginia, with their two sons, Jacob, 7, and Logan, 3.

Although they attended different colleges, decades apart, Dennis and Grace Majewski have a proud moment that few parents and children share — they are both Phi Kappa Phi members.

After Grace’s recent induction at St. Norbert College in De Pere, Wisconsin, her father thought back to when he was welcomed into the Society. “It was a privilege to be inducted into Phi Kappa Phi when I completed my undergraduate degree. Now my daughter gets to share in the same experience, becoming a member of this prestigious honor society; and sharing this recognition with her dad,” said Dennis Majewski.

Dennis Majewski recalled his college journey in the 1970s. Early on, a clerical error on his

high school transcript resulted in multiple rejections from universities and junior colleges alike. After resolving the issue and diving into communications and broadcasting at Western Illinois University, he graduated as a proud Phi Kappa Phi member with honors. “It is a particular honor for me to become a member because of an early obstacle I had to overcome,” he said. He continued his education at WIU, earning a master’s degree in 1980.

When it was time for Grace Majewski to choose a school, Dennis Majewski was happy to see her pick one with a Phi Kappa Phi chapter. Now, as she earns her bachelor’s degree in music education, she also joins the ranks of top scholars who are proud Society members.

In addition to having his daughter as a fellow member, Dennis Majewski also appreciates other perks of active membership. “One of the benefits I enjoy most about the membership is the Forum quarterly magazine. I find the articles enlightening and thoughtful,” he said. “It is always good to read about what is happening with other members of the society and with Phi Kappa Phi.”
