The year 2022 was an important time for Phi Kappa Phi as the Society marked the 125th anniversary of its founding. When a small group of students and faculty at the University of Maine formed what would become Phi Kappa Phi in 1897, they stood at the doorstep of a century soon celebrated as a great age of innovation. Airplanes, automobiles, and electric appliances were about to reshape life on the planet.
Phi Kappa Phi’s founders embraced the spirit of their times, confident that knowledge could be a force for good in a changing world. The Society’s motto, “Let the love of learning rule humanity,” affirmed that ideal.
One hundred and twenty-five years later, the passion for learning and creativity among Phi Kappa Phi’s chapters remains strong. It’s been sustained by members and donors representing a wide variety of disciplines, talents, and backgrounds across the globe. We are grateful for their abiding support of academic excellence and service to others, the cornerstone of Phi Kappa Phi’s mission. Our great bank of intellectual capital, enriched by the exchange of ideas across so many fields, is driving
real-world solutions to our own century’s challenges.
The challenges of recent years have been formidable. A pandemic disrupted the way that Phi Kappa Phi’s members meet, sustain, and grow their local chapters. We answered those challenges by summoning the Society’s central values of learning and innovation. Put simply, we’re adapting to become even better. At our national office, we’re investing in new technology and realigning resources to better track and serve Phi Kappa Phi’s members.
Members are our greatest strength, which is why we’re continuing to innovate, committed to eliminating barriers to initiation and membership so that Phi Kappa Phi’s future ranks can draw upon the broadest ranks of talented scholars. We want to bolster the Society’s resources so that it can better support all students who are academically eligible to accept our invitation to join.
Connecting the best and the brightest in a shared community of learning and service will position us well for the next 125 years and beyond. We can’t wait to see how that future unfolds. Excellence knows no bounds.

For many students like Jen Doucette at Boise State University, the opportunity to study abroad can be a life-changing occasion to reach their future goals. With the support of Phi Kappa Phi, Doucette, a Study Abroad Grant recipient, was able to venture halfway around the world to London, England, and make her dreams a reality.
Doucette, a marketing major, studied at the London Metropolitan University through a four-week brand management course titled “Britain, Brand, and Luxury." While abroad, Doucette broadened her horizons and discovered her love for history. “It was an experience that really pushed me to learn, grow, and make the most out of my time abroad. I discovered a love for history that I never knew I had until I could see ancient buildings and artifacts up close and in person,” she said.
Doucette took the opportunity to learn inside and outside of the classroom, taking solo day trips to Stonehenge, Cambridge, Wales, museums, parks, and even Wimbledon. “I came back from my study abroad experience as someone with a newfound respect for the cultures and people that we share our world with and an intense desire to go out and understand those around us.”
Looking back at her experience, Doucette realizes the impact it has made on her. “The grant took off some of the pressure of figuring out how to afford my study abroad dreams; it allowed me to live in the moment and to go out and explore.”
Phi Kappa Phi members are known for their love of learning, and for member George Hendricks, the Phi Kappa Phi Literacy Grant has helped keep the Society's motto alive through his Love of Literacy Project. The project is a collaborative endeavor in which representatives from Methodist University and Hay Street United Methodist Church provide weekly one-on-one social and academic mentoring to students at Margaret Willis Elementary, a low-income school in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Funds from the grant provided increased opportunities for sharing the love of learning by expanding literacy skills through reading and writing. This year, the project welcomed dynamic children’s book author Aniesha Jackson to the school to present her book “Queen Kia’s 8-Step Guide to Friendships” in an all-school assembly. In addition
to meeting Jackson, 400 K-5 students were able to partake in publishing a student-created book with a social-emotional focus and expand their classroom and home library materials. “This project promotes Phi Kappa Phi’s motto of 'Let the love of learning rule humanity.' We hope to continue to spread truth, virtue, justice, and love to others in our world," Hendricks said. It is MU’s hope that the program’s success can be replicated at other elementary schools in Cumberland County, North Carolina, and beyond.
When asked what the best part of Phi Kappa Phi is, Hendricks naturally responded with “their mission of 'let the love of learning rule humanity.'
It is exciting to see our students at Methodist University live this mission as we change the world through the love of learning!"

“The awards Phi Kappa Phi offers set the Society apart from others. I firmly believe that the people serving Phi Kappa Phi make the application process easy and accessible for members, which contributes to the success of individuals and the Society.”
2022 LOVE OF LEARNING RECIPIENT
“The support provided from Phi Kappa Phi is instrumental in the development of my dissertation research, while also providing the opportunity to conduct laboratory/field work which will allow me to progress as a student and scientific researcher.”
2022 LITERACY GRANT RECIPIENT
“Phi Kappa Phi's support of community organizations and programming that directly impacts the growth and development of our next generation of productive citizens is appreciated.”
“IN SOME WAYS, IT WAS A SURREAL EXPERIENCE TO BE ABLE TO HOLD SOME OF THESE DOCUMENTS THAT ARE 125 YEARS OLD. WHAT I WAS IMMEDIATELY STRUCK WITH WAS THE RICH LEGACY I WAS STEPPING INTO.”
2022 marked 125 years of honoring excellence and serving others for The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi.
Established in 1897 at the University of Maine by 10 senior students, two faculty members, and the university president, Phi Kappa Phi now has more than 100,000 active members around the world and has initiated more than 1.5 million members since its founding.
The Society’s shared sense of mission has been grounded in its governing ideal: “Let the love of learning rule humanity.”
“The motto always speaks to me because of my background in neuroscience,” said Society President Lora Becker. “Lifelong learning is a must. Humans have an amazing capacity to learn. Emphasizing the importance of that capacity is our legacy.”
Executive Director and CEO Bradley Newcomer had the opportunity to visit UMaine
and comb through the aged documents of Phi Kappa Phi history. “In some ways, it was a surreal experience to be able to hold some of these documents that are 125 years old,” he recalled. “What I was immediately struck with was the rich legacy I was stepping into.”
To celebrate the milestone, the national office hosted a celebratory luncheon for its staff and unveiled a commemorative video at the 2022 Biennial Convention in Orlando, Florida. The video is available to members at www.youtube.com/thephikappaphi.
“We are thankful for our many supporters over the past 125 years and look forward to building on their legacy as we work to deepen the impact of our numerous recognition, award, and grant programs,” Newcomer said. “Here’s to the next 125 years of recognizing academic excellence and supporting the community of scholars as they continue to serve their communities.”
The love of learning was the motivation behind the Society’s inception in 1897, and 125 years later, it still holds strong.
The Society announced the expansion of its robust award and grants program at the 47th Biennial Convention in Orlando, Florida, in August, adding two new awards, the Pioneer Program exclusively for undergraduates and the Mary Todd Sabbatical Award, named for former Society Executive Director Dr. Mary Todd.
In 2023, Phi Kappa Phi will provide 50 awards at $1,000 each to undergraduate members through its new Pioneer Program, designed to encourage and reward undergraduate members for developing the research, engagement, and leadership skills necessary to become a successful scholar. For full eligibility requirements, visit www.phikappaphi.org/pioneer.
The Mary Todd Sabbatical Award will honor one faculty member with a $50,000 award to support a sabbatical year or similar reassignments of duties. For full eligibility requirements, visit www.phikappaphi.org/sabbatical.
In addition to the two new programs, the Society’s Dissertation Fellowship received increased funding to provide 15 eligible members with $10,000 awards and the Love of Learning program will now fund 200 members with $1,000 each to help fund postbaccalaureate professional development.
“As we know, awards are what we do at Phi Kappa Phi,” said Society Executive Director and CEO Dr. Bradley R. Newcomer. “Thanks to our wonderful donors, we continue to grow these programs and funding levels. I look forward to seeing the impact these new awards have on our members and volunteers!”
"I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN CURIOUS, AND MY PASSION FOR GAINING AND IMPARTING KNOWLEDGE HAS ONLY INCREASED AS I HAVE CONTINUED MY STUDIES. MY DECISION TO ATTEND GRADUATE SCHOOL WAS BASED ON MY DESIRE TO BE A PROFESSOR RATHER THAN SOME AIM TO BE A RENOWNED ARCHAEOLOGIST"
For Graduate Research Grant recipient Emily Schumacher, her fascination for exploring different cultures, their histories, and practices came early, even begging her mom at the tender age of 7 to stay home from a family reunion to watch a PBS special on Egypt featuring Dr. Zahi Hawass.
Now a doctoral student in anthropology at The University of Tulsa, Schumacher has been able to lead her own team of researchers at Fort Louise Augusta, a former Danish costal battery in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, becoming the first group to excavate at the location. Schumacher spent two weeks on the island working with a group of three undergraduates from The University of Tulsa Department of Anthropology, one faculty member from the university, and members of the Virgin Islands Department of Planning and Natural Resources.
In addition to the grant funding her project, Schumacher credits the grant for propelling her in her degree and getting one step closer to achieving her goal of a professorship.
“I have always been curious, and my passion for gaining and imparting knowledge has only increased as I have continued my studies.
My decision to attend graduate school was based on my desire to be a professor rather than some aim to be a renowned archaeologist,” Schumacher said. “I adore anthropology and archaeology, and there is nothing quite like being in the field, but I love learning more.”
Since the completion of her project, Schumacher has been able to serve as an adviser and mentor for three undergraduate independent study projects and a senior thesis project derived from the excavation and recovered archaeological materials. “These experiences, made possible with the financial assistance provided by the Graduate Research Grant, have further cemented my passion for teaching at the university level and helped me hone my craft as a teacher,” Schumacher said.
Schumacher’s excavation has since provided the basis for a recently submitted Doctoral Dissertation Research Improvement Grant through the National Science Foundation’s Archaeology Program. The preliminary results from the excavation will also be presented at the Society for American Archaeology’s 2023 Annual Meeting.
“My research crosses boundaries, applies novel methods, and is exciting to pursue. It is excellent,” Schumacher said.

Phi Kappa Phi has a tradition of winning EXCEL Awards for its quarterly magazine, the Phi Kappa Phi Forum , and this year was no different. The Forum’s winter 2021 issue with a theme of “community” won a silver award in the “Magazine: Single Topic Issue” for publications with a circulation of 50,001 or more. In addition, the magazine received a bronze award in the “Pandemic Response: Dedicated Issue” category for the spring 2021 issue with a theme of “solitude.” This edition took a deeper look at solitude and its effect on us all.
The marketing department’s Excellence in Innovation Direct Mailer won a bronze award in the “Promotional Content: Direct Mail – Single Piece” category with its custom piece inviting universities to apply for the $100,000 Excellence in Innovation Award. Also earning an award is the 2021 Excellence in Innovation Marketing Campaign. It received a silver award in the "Promotional Content: Advertising Campaign" category. This campaign included
print pieces as well as digital communication to promote the award and highlighted the complete rebranding of the program. The competition, which is open to nonprofit and for-profit associations, annually draws hundreds of contestants from around the nation. This year, 220 awards were presented across 83 categories.
2022 came with a lot of exciting changes, including a new Society Executive Director and CEO. Bradley Newcomer assumed stewardship of the Society on Jan. 18, making him the 12th individual to hold the position since 1900. The appointment came at an exciting time for the Society as it kicked off celebrations of its 125th anniversary.
“Bradley's record of service to the Society, his deep knowledge of higher education trends, his commitment and experience in honors education, and his outgoing, collaborative style all make him an ideal addition to Phi Kappa Phi's leadership,” Society Past President Dan Sandweiss said in announcing Newcomer’s appointment. The search committee that fielded candidates for the national board included Sandweiss, President Lora Becker as chair, and previous Past President Missy Hopper.
“This is a once-in-a-career opportunity to align my deep commitment to supporting academic excellence across all academic disciplines to the national stage,” Newcomer told the search committee when he sought the post.
Newcomer was initiated into Phi Kappa Phi in 2012 at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and came to the national office from James Madison University, where he served as president of the JMU chapter and founding dean of the Honors College.
For nearly 20 years, the Phi Kappa Phi chapter at Austin Peay State University has focused its service efforts on promoting literacy and the joy of reading to the children and families in its community. Each year, it hosts the Candy for the Mind event that takes place at G.H.O.S.T., the university’s annual safe trick-or-treating event. The chapter collects new and gently used children’s books throughout the year and aids each child at the event to select a book that interests them. Over the years, the chapter has received several Phi Kappa Phi Literacy Grants that have enabled them to fill in gaps so they can provide a wide variety of children’s books, from board books for babies to chapter books for preteens and teenagers. This year, approximately 1,500 books were handed out to attendees.
“We have many families that return year after year to our table to share in the joyful tradition,” said APSU chapter historian and social media chair Karen D. Sorenson.

After a couple of attempts at college, Phi Kappa Phi member Frank Spurley thought maybe it wasn’t the path for him. In 1989, he started as an architectural major, but the courses were not what he envisioned, so he dropped out. Years later, he attempted to return to earn an electrical engineering degree but digressed as the driving force was simply not there.
Despite not completing his degrees, he excelled on the professional level as a computer-aided design manager, and became his company’s information technology guru. After exploring IT and discovering his passion for the field, Spurley took a leap of faith and started his academic journey again, completing his associate degree and most recently his bachelor's degree from the University of Maryland Global Campus.
“I realized that all of my previous attempts at college were for the wrong field,” Spurley said. “Now that I was in a field I enjoyed, learning about that field was more fun.”
As a reminder of his achievements, Spurley often refers back to his archived course materials fueling his determination to keep going. When asked what advice he would give to returning students like himself, Spurley says, “Keep your eye on the prize and believe in yourself.”
Self-doubt and challenging courses may have detoured Spurley as he navigated his academic path, but it didn’t stop him from exploring and making it to his destination.
Tiara Abraham wants to be a professional opera and classical concert singer one day, perhaps teaching after her performance career is over. By most yardsticks, she’s well ahead of schedule in pursuing her goals.
Abraham, who’s 17, was taking college classes at 7. She graduated from high school at 13, enrolled at University of California-Davis as its youngest Regents Scholar at 14, and graduated from the university at 16 – the same year she was initiated into Phi Kappa Phi. Today, she’s pursuing a master’s degree in voice at the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University Bloomington, with plans to secure a doctorate after that.
Abraham, who grew up with her family in Sacramento, California, comes from a household of high achievers. Her brother, Tanishq Abraham, joined the Society in 2018 at age 14. Tanishq also began taking college classes at 7, graduated high school at 10, and got a bachelor of science degree at 15 from UC-Davis, where, at 19, he's now pursuing a doctorate in biomedical engineering.
Both Tiara and Tanishq credit their parents, Bijou and Taji Abraham, with helping them pursue their dreams at an early age. Tanishq and Tiara credit each other with inspiring their achievements, too.
“I am proud to be part of a distinguished group of scholars who have achieved academic excellence in their respective fields,” Tanishq said of his membership in Phi Kappa Phi. “I am honored to be recognized for my hard work and dedication to learning.”
“Being a Phi Kappa Phi member means that my hard work and passion for learning are recognized,” Tiara Abraham said. “I truly believe in the Phi Kappa Phi motto: ‘Let the love of learning rule humanity.’”

“There are so many amazing elements to Phi Kappa Phi, including the networking and educational opportunities, the Phi Kappa Phi community, amazing discounts to major brands and companies, scholarship opportunites, the Phi Kappa Phi Forum magazine, and so many other great things. It is hard to say which one is the best part.”
ACHIEVEMENT IS A FAMILY AFFAIR
The successes of Phi Kappa Phi illustrated in this report would not be possible without you. Because of your generosity, the Society was able to expand upon its mission to recognize and promote academic excellence in 2022. Donors like you are the best example of the community of scholars and friends who make up Phi Kappa Phi. On behalf of the 1.5 million members of Phi Kappa Phi, thank you for helping us be a bright light.
