The award recognizes the impact of nonprofit associations in every sector of society. Phi Kappa Phi is more than proud to have been identified as a kickstarter of innovation for our Excellence in Innovation Award.

T H E P O W E R O F A ( S S O C I AT I O N ) In July 2018, Phi Kappa Phi was recognized by the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) with the 2018 Power of A Silver Award.

The Society received the award for its efforts in recognizing and promoting innovation in higher education through its Excellence in Innovation Award. The Power of A Awards, the association industry’s top award, honor outstanding programs by associations that have a positive impact at the local, national, and global levels.

Established in 2014 and awarded each biennium, Phi Kappa Phi’s Excellence in Innovation Award was created to recognize

colleges and universities for their achievement in finding powerful solutions to improve the lives of others and create systematic large-scale change, as well as to raise awareness of the importance of encouraging innovation in higher education.

Since its creation, the Innovation Award has been given to Tulane University in 2016 and most recently to Western Michigan University in 2018.

“The power of an association is its ability to serve not only its membership but to represent them, to believe so passionately in its mission that it sees the potential for impact beyond its own members,” said Society Executive Director Mary Todd. “The Innovation Award is a direct extension of both the Phi Kappa Phi mission and members’ shared love of learning by lifting up the transformative work being done on college and university campuses across the country.”

A LO V E F O R L I T E R A C Y Bethanie Pletcher, assistant professor of literacy education at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, knows the impact that early literacy experiences can have on a child’s life. With the assistance of a 2018 Literacy Grant from Phi Kappa Phi, Pletcher established a partnership between TAMU-CC student Maddie Woods works with a small Texas A&M-Corpus Christi’s College of group of second-graders on literacy instruction.

Education and Human Development and the John F. Kennedy Elementary School in Corpus Christi to help young learners struggling with literacy.

The initiative, Islanders Helping the Early Acceleration of Readers Together (iHeart), pairs undergraduate teacher candidates with second-grade students for smallgroup instruction using specialized literacy materials. The program’s aim is to engage children in instructional-level reading in order to accelerate their reading skills and strategy use while also instilling a love for literacy early in the student’s education.

“The Response to Intervention (RTI) model is used to assess and monitor students who might otherwise fall through the cracks. The children who need supplemental reading instruction under the RTI model deserve high-quality books that contain bright photos and interesting stories and topics. Because of this grant, we are able to provide these materials,” Pletcher said.

“We are extremely grateful for this Literacy Grant from Phi Kappa Phi as purchasing books for our undergraduate student tutors and children to use during tutorial sessions is necessary for the successful continuation of our project.”

That’s where National Geographic comes in. Stark wants to team up with the organization to provide health care in underserved communities, including training new providers in those communities. And even though she’s at the beginning of her career, she hopes the compassion she feels for those communities and all her patients becomes her trademark as she goes forward.

“Too often, physicians become jaded and forget why they chose their career path: to heal and to do so with empathy and compassion,” she said.

“While I am still in the beginning of my medical education, it is my goal to be able to keep a humanistic perspective to my medical career by treating my patients as individuals and not medical problems.”

Stark is also thrilled to represent the medical community and Phi Kappa Phi. “When I first saw the email from Phi Kappa Phi, with ‘Congratulations!’ in the subject line, my initial reaction was shock, then excitement,” she said.

“Phi Kappa Phi inducts only the most qualified and successful students, and so I was thrilled to be selected as a Phi Kappa Phi Fellow. I am honored to represent The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi to my school and the medical community.”

T

he road to college wasn’t an easy one for J. Gabriel Ware. Having been in foster care since the age of one, he faced several challenges from an early age.

It was these challenges, coupled with his underwhelming performance in school, that made it seem like higher education was out of reach. “I was a horrible student in school, to be honest with you,” he said.

Students like Ware are the reason that Western Michigan University established its Seita Scholars program in 2008.

The innovative program is a comprehensive support system that helps young adults who have aged out of the foster care system in the state of Michigan. Scholars of the program receive a scholarship, year-round oncampus housing, and one-on-one campus coaching for academic and personal support throughout their collegiate career.

Because of his high school grades, Ware began his collegiate journey in community college. It was at that time that he first learned of the Seita program from one of his former caseworkers. After earning his associate’s degree, he applied and was accepted into the program.

Before attending Western Michigan, Ware had to work several jobs to make

ends meet while in community college. With the Seita program’s financial aid — which covers everything — he was able to advance past entry-level retail jobs as a student at WMU. “When you work two to three jobs to get through school, you don’t get jobs to help advance your career,” he said.

Because of the Seita program, he was able to accept a six-month unpaid scholarship at a magazine in Washington, D.C., and earned a spot in a New York Times student journalism institute.

The opportunity and chance at success afforded to Ware, and students like him, through the Seita program is why Phi Kappa Phi awarded its Excellence in Innovation to Western Michigan in May 2018. The $100,000 prize is given to an institution for achievement in finding powerful solutions to important challenges through innovation in higher education.

“By lifting up an underrepresented population — young people who have aged out of foster care — the university has transformed lives and offered hope to individuals who may never have dreamed a college degree was within reach,” Society Executive Director Mary Todd said.

Edward B. Montgomery, president of Western Michigan, accepted the award on behalf of the university at Phi Kappa Phi’s 2018 convention in Minneapolis. During his acceptance, Montgomery said one of the best parts of being president is going to commencements.

“You get to see people and families who are filled with joy at what they’ve accomplished and what they’ve overcome,” Montgomery said. “If you ever get cynical about why we’re in the higher education business, sit back and watch graduation.”

The Seita program, he said, is an incredible journey for students who had no pathway forward in life. Since its inception, it has graduated more than 140 students, many of whom have gone on to graduate school and medical school.

And Ware is one of those students. Because he was dual enrolled his senior year at Western Michigan, the Seita program was able to pay for part of his master’s degree, too.

“This is a great program, and I’m proud to be a part of it,” Ware said.

or almost 100 years, Phi Kappa Phi Fellowships have grown into one of the most prestigious programs in the Society. This year was one of the most momentous in Society history.

In August, Phi Kappa Phi Fellowships were increased from $345,000 awarded each year to $615,000. That’s a 78 percent increase.

“It’s no wonder I like to say ‘Awards are what we do,’ ” Executive Director Mary Todd said.

The increased funding, which starts in 2019, will support fifty-eight fellowships for students in their first year of graduate or professional study. Fifty fellowships will be awarded at $8,500.

Six Marcus L. Urann Fellowships, named for the founder of Phi Kappa Phi, will be awarded at $20,000. And there will be two new fellowships — the 1897 Fellowship, named for the year the

Society was founded, and the Sherrill Carlson Fellowship, which honors lifelong scholar and donor Sherrill Carlson, at $35,000 each.

Carlson’s donation was a big reason the Society was able to make such an ambitious expansion. She was an editor who worked at Washington State University, as well as with children’s books. Carlson also founded a magazine, Washington’s Land and People, and owned and published Northwest Living!

Her father served as president of the Oregon State University chapter of Phi Kappa Phi. Carlson’s gift of nearly $950,000 upon her death in 2016 was the second-largest bequest made to Phi Kappa Phi. “I wish I’d had the opportunity to know Sherrill Carlson and to learn more about what Phi Kappa Phi meant to her,” Todd said. “Since her initiation

Donations like Carlson’s and yours support the Society’s mission of spreading the love of learning and honoring excellence in scholarship. Fellows in 2018 investigated climate change, explored identity in artwork, investigated the self-made woman, supported families of scholars, helped advance work in neurobiology, and more.

“It’s an honor to receive the Phi Kappa Phi Dissertation Fellowship award to represent Portland State University and the Systems Science Graduate Program,” said fellowship recipient Alexandra E. Nielsen, who studies opioid abuse treatment and public policy. “The award will allow me to focus on my degree completion and my sons so I can finish strong.”

I N T H E N E W S KEN WARD JR. (West Virginia University) was named a 2018 MacArthur Fellow. An investigative journalist and staff writer at the Charleston Gazette-Mail for more than twenty-five years, Ward received the fellowship for his in-depth coverage of the coal, chemical, and natural gas industries in West Virginia. He is one of twenty-five fellows to receive the Genius Grant, which comes with a $625,000 award over five years. 1

RITA DOVE (Miami University) was named poetry editor of The New York Times Magazine in June 2018. She is the fourth poet to hold the position. Dove is the recipient of several national awards including the Pulitzer Prize in 1987, the National Humanities Medal in 1996, and the National Medal of the Arts in 2012. She served as U.S. Poet Laureate from 1993 to 1995. 2 named president of Northern Illinois University in September 2018.

Hrabowski was recognized as one of the most accomplished campus leaders in the country and honored for his efforts in empowering educational opportunity for all as president of University of Maryland, Baltimore County since 1992. 4

As an undergraduate, she earned several honors and was a three-time recipient of the university’s Distinguished Student Scholar award. 5

It’s no secret that Phi Kappa Phi members have a lot in common between academic excellence and a commitment to service. But for three new members in Wisconsin, their bond goes beyond a love of learning.

When Sarah Prusha received her invitation to join Phi Kappa Phi at the University of Wisconsin-Madison during the spring of 2018, her dad, Chris, and younger sister, Erin, were thrilled for her and also unsurprised. Sarah had recently graduated from UW-Madison in December 2017 with a bachelor of arts in psychology and a criminal justice certificate in just two and a half years.

“I was very happy when I received my invitation to Phi Kappa Phi,” Sarah said. “I know how prestigious the honor society is, and I am honored to be a part of it.”

What happened next came as a welcome surprise to the family when Erin, a junior studying chemistry and forensic investigation at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, also received an invitation to join.

“I was surprised and honored to be selected to join Phi Kappa Phi,” Erin said. “I was familiar with it, because my sister had already received her invitation, but I was not expecting to receive my own.”

The two sisters, attending different institutions, were delighted to share the honor together and were to be initiated in April, just two weeks apart. Their father, Chris, also was excited. “I was one proud father on hearing the news from both of them,” he said.

What the Prushas didn’t know, however, was that they would soon have to schedule another initiation ceremony on the family calendar.

Within a week of Erin receiving her invitation to join, Chris also received an invitation from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Currently pursuing a master’s degree in administrative leadership, Chris was both proud and overjoyed to become a member alongside his two daughters.

Over the span of two and a half weeks, Sarah, Erin, and Chris were each initiated into their respective Phi Kappa Phi chapters — a cause for celebration, of course, for the entire Prusha family.

“Earning a college education has always been important to me and my family, and it feels wonderful for all of us to be honored for our hard work and dedication,” Erin said.

In May 2018, the University of California-Davis chapter initiated more than 240 students. Among those students was fourteen-year-old Tanishq Abraham, one of the youngest members to ever join the Society.

From a very early age, Tanishq, a native of Sacramento, was fascinated by all things science. It was this love of learning that he channeled into his education, and he began to excel in academics.

At the age of seven, Tanishq started taking college courses at American River College, a community college in his hometown, while concurrently completing his high school degree. By eleven, he had earned three associate’s degrees from the college and graduated at the top of his class. At twelve years old, Tanishq was accepted into UC-Davis and began studies in biomedical engineering during the fall of 2016.

“Being passionate about medical and engineering fields, I decided I would pursue a multidisciplinary field like biomedical engineering for my undergraduate degree,” he said.

With the credits earned from American River College, Tanishq started at UC-Davis as a junior and began working as an undergraduate research intern in the university’s Biomedical Engineering Department.

Just like any college student, he experienced the challenges that can accompany coursework, exams, studying, and more. It was evident, though, that his hard work paid off when he received his invitation to join Phi Kappa Phi. But Tanishq will be the first to admit that it hasn’t always been easy.

“I had to overcome challenges during my seven years of college life, mainly because of my very young age,” Tanishq said. “Many people thought that there is no way a young child can do it, so I had to prove to them over and over again. Just like most college students who work hard, I have worked hard also.”

Tanishq graduated from UC-Davis in June 2018 and began the next phase of his academic career: the pursuit of a Ph.D. in biomedical engineering. He was accepted into the biomedical engineering graduate program at UC-Davis and received the Deans’ Distinguished Graduate Fellowship, which guarantees five years of funding.

No matter what follows for Tanishq after graduate school, it’s certain he will continue to be an inspiration to students of all ages. “In his passion to learn and reach his goals, he has inspired many around the world since he was seven years old,” said Tanishq’s parents, Taji and Bijou Abraham.
