We have all noticed the Burn Out Tyre marks on the Highway near the Shop, and Senior Constable Reynolds is following this up as per his article. Please let him know if you have any information.

I have a dash Cam in my car, and recently while travelling towards Geelong I had a car pass me (over double lines) travelling well over the speed limit. I spoke to Chris about this some time back, and he advised me that with Dash Cam footage showing breaches of the law such as this, we as citizens can forward our Camera Footage to Crime Stoppers, or report it to local Police, who will follow up the incident if they can obtain suitable evidence.

So here’s the thing! Am I unAustralian to be a dobber and report such an incident, or am I a responsible Australian for following it through and having irresponsible people feel the weight of the law and therefore encouragement that they should do the right thing in the future?

It’s a personal choice that we all must make, to look after ourselves, our families and the general public. So the choice is yours! Which choice will you make?

“YOUNG ACHIEVER AWARD” CHLOE HAYDEN’S STORY

Congratulations to Inverleigh resident, Chloe Hayden, 19, who received the ‘Young Achiever Award’ at the Geelong Awards for People with a Disability presentation evening, in February. The award recognised Chloe’s advocacy and efforts in raising awareness and understanding of autism through her Princess Aspien blog. Started in 2015, it shares her experience of autism ‘from the inside’. It has had over a million hits.

Chloe was diagnosed as having Asperger’s at 13. She and her family realised that quirks, such as only eating with small spoons, and traits, such as the inability to wear certain fabrics, could be understood as part of her autism. While quirks and traits might change over time and be managed in different ways, Autism is a lifelong condition. A major cause of distress for many autistic people is the reaction of others. Chloe experienced the trauma of daily teasing and bullying at school, and the sense of being an outcast. She changed to home schooling and eventually studied theology and creative arts for a year at college.

Chloe found a path to expressing herself and mixing with others through her identification with fairy tale characters. As an actor, she could ‘slip into the skin’ of a character and assume their qualities as she performed in costume. Gradually she found that characteristics like courage, confidence and a bubbly personality became part of her own persona. She found

that maturity has helped her to delight in who she is, without worrying about the opinions of others, and to grab opportunities as they arise.

Chloe has been busy speaking to groups, assisting with Yellow Ladybugs (a support group for girls with autism), facilitating school visits for BATYR (a group promoting good mental health for young people), running her own business (Magic Moments Princess Entertainment), attending conferences and helping with charities such as the Portland ‘Wish Upon a Star’, being an ambassador for ASD Victoria (Autism Spectrum Disorder) and being involved with Treehouse Geelong (disability and illness assistance) for personal support.

Chloe lives with her parents, sister and two brothers in Inverleigh. The family has a multitude of pets, including horses. Chloe’s assistance dog, Matilda, has provided ever present, unquestioning love and companionship, helping to calm Chloe after sensory overload or trying times.

Chloe is an inspiring role model, and not just for people with autism. Her messages of ‘be kind, have the courage to try, and value and respect difference in yourself and others’ along with ‘everyone can have a wonderful life’, have relevance to us all.

POLICE REPORT FOR MARCH 2017

Sorry there was no article for last month, I was on leave for most of January. On returning to work I was disgusted to find the burnout marks on the Highway on the entrance to the township. I have been informed they occurred on Australia day but no one has been able to provide me with any registration numbers, pictures or video of the culprits for me to take action. These aren’t the only tyre marks around as I have found quite a few on the Teesdale and Shelford Roads as well. I recently caught one offender doing a burnout on the highway in Murghebuloc and I issued him a substantial fine. If I detect anyone doing this type of activity they face a fine as well as a vehicle impoundment for a month. If you too are disgusted by the marks being left on the roadways please help me to catch the culprits via photos or camera footage. Between burnout marks on the road and shotgun holes in road signs I am afraid travellers are not getting a very good impression of the area.

I have seen a few trailers getting around with no lights on at night and some trailers without numbers on the rear. If the trailer is a small trailer that does not require registration (ie 6 x 4) you still need to have the registration number of the towing vehicle displayed on the rear of the trailer visible up to 20 metres.

We recently found out about a school age gathering from the Geelong region that was to occur where the rivers meet. It had been organised on facebook apparently and was sent to about 300 people. Luckily only about 70 turned up and apart from some rubbish left there appeared to have been no incidents there. If anybody hears about such things taking place please let me know so we can keep an eye on these events.

Result: The motorcycle rider who sped in to town a while ago and through the Inverleigh school crossing and was identified by a parent from the school at the petrol station in Bannockburn was interviewed recently and has received a fine with licence loss for the speeding and another fine for unlicensed riding.

Thanks for the assistance received in identifying him.

Goodbye and thankyou

After years of wonderful service, our little town found it hard last month saying farewell to Danni Aitken and Iola Iacovella and the wonderful staff at the Red Door cafe.

The two local mums started this venture with the help of their husbands and it quickly became a stopping point for locals and holiday makers passing through our town.

A homely, welcoming vibe was the first thing that greeted you as you stepped through the door. With a retro look and eye-catching artwork compliments of Iola’s artist husband Mark, this shop quickly became a great little place to stop for breakfast or lunch.

Such a charming place with lots of interesting extras like vintage magazines, hand-knitted rugs to keep you warm and a selection of tea cosies to purchase and not forgetting the wonderful food and organic produce!

Your farewell is just an end of yet another chapter in your life. There are newer opportunities waiting for you as you and your growing families step ahead in your lives. We wish you all the best... as you move into new and exciting ventures... May luck and success always be with you!

The Real Food Festival – a Taste of Golden Plains

Celebrate the quality produce of the Golden Plains Shire at the inaugural Real Food Festival from 4-18 March 2017.

Over a two-week period, the region’s best farmers, growers and makers will come together to host a series of events across the Shire from workshops and special interest talks to lunches and high teas.

With something to suit everyone from dedicated foodies to the home cook, the Festival will showcase the high-quality produce for which the Golden Plains Shire has become well-known.

Bec Cameron who opened Farmer’s Daughter Produce Store in Inverleigh in 2015 said she is thrilled to be able to share her love of fresh food.

“As a small business owner and someone passionate about supporting our local farmers and food suppliers I am excited to be a part of the inaugural Real Food Festival in 2017. What a great way to showcase what we have to offer in the Golden Plains,” Bec said.

The Festival will run over a two week period and will involve numerous events in wineries, olive groves, cafes and local produce outlets.

Tickets will be booked for individual events, for more information look out for the Festival programme which will be available in February 2017.

With support from the Golden Plains Shire Council, The Real Food Festival is an initiative of a group of locals who are passionate about fresh, local food.

The Real Food Festival will be launched at the Golden Plains Farmers Market on 4 March 2017.

Planning and Environment Act 1987 GOLDEN PLAINS PLANNING SCHEME Notice of the Preparation of an Amendment Amendment C74 The Golden Plains Shire Council has prepared Amendment C74 to the Golden Plains Planning Scheme.

The land affected by the Amendment is Lot 1 TP372637J and Lot 1 TP397040G, 230 Hopes Plains Road, Inverleigh.

The Amendment proposes to re-zone the subject site from Farming Zone (FZ) to Low Density residential Zone (LDRZ) and to apply a Design and Development Overlay Schedule 5 (DDO5) to the subject site.

FEBRUARY 2017 CALENDAR LOCAL School Buses

A large component of family life in a rural community involves getting the children to school safely and on time. The school bus is now part and parcel of our children’s lives but it wasn’t always so according to the five locals who were approached for assistance with this article.

The establishment of the bus runs all have a familiar theme.

This photo is of students at the first pick-up at the Barunah Hall & tennis courts showing Lorraine Carter, Rhondda Gordon, Janice & Helen Giddings.

This route is still operating and has long carried the second generation of students. The anecdotal stories of bus shenanigans are legend and certainly would not pass the current standards of care and responsibility but the bus ride is part of their education.

Valentine Dawber was working as a rabbiter on Barunah Plains when he accepted the offer and the service began in 1949. This family connection continued for over 50 years until 2001 when his son-in-law Graham

Robertson retired from the bus run.

Photo #3 - the Inverleigh bus for workers and students comes just after WW2 when Eric Peel and Harold Allen recognised the train service was not suitable and they struggled to procure a bus and fuel for the service. Christina Garrett gives this description “In my bus travelling days there was just a general public bus service, used by both workers and students. It left Inverleigh at 8am and left from the Tourist Bureau in Lt. Malop St for the return journey at 5 pm. It ran right along Aberdeen and Ryrie Streets to Geelong High School. Students of other schools had to get off and walk the rest of their way. The Inverleigh buses all had a habit of breaking down a lot. Tiptoeing late

into class, teachers would roll their eyes and say ‘Inverleigh children late again.’ After 4pm students congregated in Lt. Malop Street (eating fish and chips from café in Union Street) to wait for the 5pm departure. It was a long slow run home, usually not in Inverleigh until 6 pm which was not too good in the depths of winter. Workers in shops and offices, in order to catch the 5pm bus, had to work shortened lunch breaks. One of the reasons the bus journey home was so long, was that they also delivered parcels to the gateways along the way and all this took time. About 1956 a designated workers’ bus was put on by McHarry’s, leaving town at 5.35, and the schoolchildren were picked up straight after school finished. Harold Allen, Ian Robertson, Hermann Fricke and McHarry’s were the proprietors I remember. I do not recognize the chap In the calendar photo.

Have you noticed how much anger seems to be around these days? We have ‘road rage”, “domestic violence” and ‘home invasions”. Even our entertainment is richly laced with anger and if you don’t believe me have a look at “My Kitchen Rules”, “Married At First Sight” and “I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here”.

Often we resort to anger as a way to get people to do what we want. Parents yell at their children to try to get them to obey. Employers intimidate employees to motivate them. Husbands speak harshly to their wives to try to change them.

We think that the best way to help people know we’re serious is to raise our voices. To yell and scream or to give someone the silent treatment. Some people truly think that the only way to get a person to really change is by letting their anger loose! We think to ourselves, “They need to know just how serious and important this is. If I don’t get angry, this will just keep happening again and again.”

But God looks on things a bit differently. In the Book of James (it’s worth a read by the way and it won’t take you long) we find James saying, “Let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger;

for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness {the way of conducting our lives} of God (James 1:19-20).

Did you get that? Anger won’t produce the way we really need to be living—in our children, spouse, relative or anyone else. You absolutely can’t make someone change by being angry at them. It simply doesn’t work.

Anger will often produce something else, though, and that’s fear. Others may obey you because of fear. But do you really want this? Actually it’s probably the exact opposite of what want want.

In fact, anger can actually produce compliance on the outside and a stone cold heart inside. It can harden people’s hearts toward each other and toward God, driving them even further from what God desires for them.

God doesn’t use anger to produce his righteousness in us. God attributes to us Christ’s righteousness, and then moves us to follow of gratitude. We love because he first loved us, not because he first intimidated us.

The “lie” of anger is that it can lead to change.

Maybe, but is it the change you want? Rather, within a Christian context we would say it’s God’s influence that operates within us that leads to change, a significant change for all concerned.

MARCH 2017 CALENDAR SAVAGES LOG

The walking path continuation of Newman Street is one of the town’s great assets - down the avenue of gums beside the Vicar’s Paddock, to Gray’s Garden with its variety of native plants, over the Federation Bridge and then the difficult choice of left or right along the river, or the huff and puff to the lookout and on to the homes in the vicinity of Common Road.

It wasn’t always so for the few families living along Common Road, the Leigh River was a barrier to school and the shops so they provided their own solutions. Below the Savage family farm the river had several large waterholes and so this log bridge was created for the use of family members.

It has been part of the scene with photos existing from 1905 through to this one from 1937. Obviously floods and decay made some adaptation necessary over the years and this

looks very stable with planks added to give a flat surface for the crossing. Other photos show a handrail and a dry riverbed with lots of debris. The stories are that other crossings existed at various times - the crossing in the Vicar’s paddock is referred to as Kennedy’s Log, I have no idea why, and further upstream past the Police Station was Alderson’s Log.

The Federation Bridge, replacing Savage’s Log, and giving access to the new housing estates is very popular with residents and visitors and with an expected lifetime of 25 years it is a much used and loved piece of infrastructure.

The Historical Society meets on 4th Monday evening at the Hall where we chat, collect and maintain our collection of photos and information. It is fun.

GENERATIONS CONNECT OVER TECH, TEA AND TALES IN GOLDEN PLAINS

An innovative program bringing young and older generations together has launched in Golden Plains, and it’s not too late for more seniors to get involved!

Tech, Tea and Tales, an initiative of Lively and Humankind Enterprises, employs young local jobseekers to provide one-on-one technology help to seniors in the Shire, and to record their life stories and experiences on film. The 6-week program aims to build meaningful connections across generations, by providing a unique opportunity for young and older people to come together and share skills, knowledge and experience.

15 young local job seekers have been employed and trained in how to support the senior participants to improve their use of technology devices. Seniors across Golden Plains Shire are invited to participate for free in the 6-week program, which will be offered at Bannockburn Library, Haddon Community Centre, Meredith Community House and Estia Health. Participants can bring along a device (such as an iPad or smartphone) that they would like to learn how to use, or make use of one of the devices available in each of the program venues.

The program aims to help seniors explore how new technologies can help them connect with friends and family, pursue interests and access information.

The program also provides an opportunity to share a lifetime of experience with young people from the local community who are keen to learn from older generations.

The program has been supported by the Golden Plains Shire Council and the Victorian State Government. Welcome to our School Welcome to the 2017 school year at Teesdale Primary School. A special welcome is extended to families who had children starting at our school for the first time.

We have a student population of 151, about slightly down on last year.

SCHOOL LEADERS

This year Teesdale Primary School have elected School Leaders. Tom Cowling and Eliza Dewit are our school captains and our school vice captains are Teague Holdsworth and Matilda Murgatroyd. Together they will lead school assemblies, assist with organising special events including fundraisers and attend school functions and important events like ANZAC Day ceremonies with Mr Rau. We congratulate them and wish them all the best for the year ahead.

STAFFING NEWS

We also have new staff joining us this year and would like to welcome Mr Andy Loke in grade 3/4 and Mr Luke Thwaites in 5/6.

Teaching staff member, Helen Bathgate, has announced her intention to retire. Helen has been a valued staff member at Teesdale since 1989.

IN HELEN’S OWN WORDS:

“Being from the Mallee region of Victoria myself, I’ve always loved the country aspect of Teesdale and have been actively involved in teaching a huge number of students that have been at this school. I love watching them progress, no matter how great or small, and grow into citizens of the community of whom we can feel very proud. I have also met many fabulous parents over the years and have been part of some amazing staff teams at the school who have all helped to make our wonderful school great”.

Helen will be teaching her 1/2B class for term 1, followed by Long Service Leave and then retirement. We thank Helen for her significant contribution to the Teesdale Primary School community, over 28 years, and wish her a fulfilling retirement. Our final assembly for term 1, on Friday 31st April, will be Helen’s farewell assembly. Details of a social gathering opportunity will be forwarded, when known. We have currently advertised for a full-time teacher for the 1/2B class for terms 2-4. More details will be communicated when the outcome is known.

BOOK PACK DAYS

Thank you to families for supporting the Book Pack collection days. The packs contained everything the students required to start school and it was great to see that everyone took advice on board and clearly named all the items! It was a wonderful opportunity to connect with all our families, hear their holiday news and see how much all the students had grown over the holiday break! Thank you to our PFA team who organised a cuppa and cake get together once the children had settled in their classrooms. First day of school is a big adventure for parents as well as children!

At the close of Nominations on Friday, 10th February, as the number of nominations matched the vacancies, the following parents were duly elected: Kerryn Beauchamp: one parent, two-year vacancy Glenn Murgatroyd: one parent, one year vacancy As part of our School Council Constituting Order, we also have a representative of the Parents and Friends Association (PFA) on School Council. PFA have designated that Genevieve Elijah will be their representative for 2017. We thank Kerryn, Glenn and Genevieve for their interest and support of our school and look forward to their contribution to School Council. We would also like to thank our retiring school council members, Liisa Weatherly, Fiona Warelow and Scott Norton for their valued contribution to our School Council.

NEW SANDPIT SHADE STRUCTURE COMPLETED

It is great to see the number of students, from across all year levels, enjoying the sandpit area. The completion of the shade structure has further enhanced the area. Special thanks to parent Lana Van Galen for her project management of this school improvement. The shade structure was funded from a grant from the State Department of Health and Human Services.

Thank you to our parents who volunteered at our Prep Working Bee last Sunday. A number of jobs were completed, including spreading of the soft fall under our playground equipment.

LIFE EDUCATION VAN As part of our drug and health education this term, we are having the Life Education mobile learning centre visit our school. Life Education delivers health and drug education through a unique mobile learning centre environment, which provides students with strategies required to leave a healthy lifestyle. A wide range of age appropriate topics range from the human body and how it works, to healthy eating and nutrition, medicines and drugs, bullying, resilience and social skills. The van will be here for 3 days in March, with all classes attending sessions.

INVERLEIGH BOWLS CLUB - MARCH 2017

Well we are at the pointy end of the season, with 2 matches to go in Midweek Pennant and 4 matches for Saturday Pennant.

We are sitting in delightful spots with both pennants.

Midweek pennant, is in 4th position, just 10 points behind Point Lonsdale, whom we play next Tuesday 14th February. A win here would help secure a place in the finals for us, as this year is our first season in this Division 5, we are feeling pretty “chuffed “ with ourselves.

As we are a very very small club , of some 28 playing members, to have this level of consistent skill base, to be in finals each year , is a great credit to all those that are involved with the club.

The addition of more male memers being available to play midweek has certainly helped also.

We are allowed to have 2 female and 2 males per side, though the male are not allowed to skip.

Saturday pennant has 2 divisions, 5 and 11.

Division 5 is also in 4th position, playing Ocean Grove whom are in 3rd place but 22 points ahead. The top two place getters are also playing off so there could be a change in positions there. A win in all the 4 matches still to be played are a must for Inverleigh.

Division 11 are doing it hard this year, as they are in 10th position. They play the top team Eastern Park, this coming week.

A win last week, was thrilling and hopefully some more wins to come before the end of the season.

Because of our small numbers, on Saturday, everyone must play, if some one is out, then this division 11 plays with one less, if 2 are away they have to forfeit.

People like to be winners in life, and it is a credit to all players in this division 11, for turning up each week.

Our club champions for this year were Faye Thomas and Cameron Peel.

Inverleigh Bowls Club are certainly looking for a few more players next season, as we are to loose 3 after this season due to them leaving the district.

Just recently, we had the Lions Club come with 35 of their members for a bowl, dinner and drinks. A good night was had by all and they are keen to do it again.

The Bannokburn Surgery have also come for a social bowl, as well as the Inverleigh Kindergarten Dads.

We run a Bowls Country Challenge, between Winchelsea, Bannockburn, Geelong Cement and ourselves, held late January run under lights. Inverleigh is waiting to win this cup.

We have started Junior Jack Attack Bowls with the local Inverleigh Primary School as part of their school sport’s curriculum. We have done this the last 4 years with the school and it has been very popular.

Welcome to the 2017 season at the Inverleigh Football and Netball Club!

This year the club is aiming to fill junior football sides in all age divisions to complement our fantastic junior netball participation. This is to allow all kids in our region the opportunity to get involved and keep healthy within our great sporting community.

We’re currently seeking more players of all ages, however we’re especially keen for any kids in the U14 and U16 age divisions to come join in. Our fee details are below.

2017 Season Launch With our GDFL season round 1 just around the corner, we’re asking you to save the date for our season launch at the club after our first game on April 1, 2017.

Vaccines trigger protective immune responses in pets and prepare them to fight future infections.

There are a number of diseases that all dogs and cats should be vaccinated against.

One of the best things you can do to keep your pets happy and healthy is ensure they have regular annual vaccinations. These vaccinations will help protect them against life threatening and debilitating diseases.

Heartworm is a parasite that lives inside the arteries of the lung and chambers of a pets’ heart.

Heartworm disease is spread between pets by mosquito.

Heartworm prevention is a monthly spot on, tablet or a yearly injection.

Parvovirus - a highly contagious viral gastroenteritis. Symptoms include severe vomiting and diarrhoea containing blood. Depression, loss of appetite. Death can occur very quickly.

Hepatitis - a highly contagious disease. It can be severe in young dogs and fatal in puppies. Symptoms include fever, disorientation, loss of appetite and abdominal pain.

Distemper - a highly contagious disease. Early signs may include high temperature, lethargy. Many dogs will develop muscle spasms, convulsions and progressive paralysis.

Kennel Cough/Bordetella - is an infectious bronchitis of dogs characterized by a harsh, hacking cough. It is very contagious and can be picked up anywhere, not just in a boarding facility.

Recommended Vaccination Schedule: Puppies: 6-8 weeks 10-12 weeks 14-16 weeks 12 months after your pup’s 14 -16 week vaccination a booster vaccine is required and then a yearly vaccination and health check is recommended to ensure long-term immunity against contagious diseases.

CATS -

Feline Enteritis - A potentially deadly enteritis causing diarrhoea, vomiting, abdominal pain and lethargy.

Feline Rhinotracheitis ; Feline Calicivirus - are highly contagious components of cat flu. It is a common disease in unvaccinated cats and can cause longterm problems, including chronic sneezing, and nasal discharge.

Feline Chlamydiosis - often causes lesions on the eyes and gums, in conjunction with sneezing and upper respiratory symptoms.

Cats may also be vaccinated against Feline Leukaemia and Feline Immunodeficiency Virus. FIV is similar to HIV in humans and has quite a high prevalence in outside cats. It is mainly transmitted through cat fighting.

Recommended Vaccination Schedule: Kittens: 6-8 weeks 10-12 weeks 14-16 weeks 12 months after your kitten’s 14-16 week vaccination a booster vaccine is required and then a yearly vaccination and health check is recommended.

The next few weeks will be a busy period at Victoria Park. At the end of February the Bellarine Harness for Pleasure Club are holding their annual Combined Driving event and over forty competitors will be competing over the weekend. The following weekend on 5 March the annual Dachshund Derby is to be held and this has always been a fun day out for all the family.

Last year the Committee of Management held two successful Car Boot Sales as fund raisers for the Park. This year the third of these sales is to be held on 19 March. If anyone is interested in booking a site the cost is only $15. If you have any items for which you have no further use this is an ideal opportunity to unclutter. If you are just interested in looking for a bargain entry is free. Refreshments will be available on the day. Gates open for stallholders at 8am and the sale will wind down around 1pm. Should you have any queries regarding the sale please contact John Turnbull on 52815068.

support allows the Committee to save on the cost of this work and reallocate funds to other purposes around the Park

As reported last October the strong winds of the time brought down a couple of the old long established pine trees on the Reserve. At the time the Committee as able to obtain assistance of the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning in the removal of one dangerous tree on the Southern boundary of the Park. Three other dangerous trees remain on the northern boundary of the Park just to the east of the main entrance and the Committee has declared an out of bounds zone around these trees until such time as action can be taken to alleviate any danger.

Apart from the three events detailed above the usual activities continue to be held in the Park. To improve the facilities available for all users of the Park recent improvements have taken place. The new main entrance is almost complete with only the historic gatekeeper’s shelter still to be relocated and improvements have taken place in the clubhouse with new chairs and curtains having been obtained.

H30 program

Golden Plains Shire Council has been successful in their application to the H30 Challenge.

VicHealth’s H30 Challenge encourages people over 18 years old to make a simple 30-day pledge to replace every sugary drink they would normally drink, with water.

Sugary drinks include sugar-sweetened soft drinks, energy drinks, fruit drinks, sports drinks, ready-to-drink iced tea, flavoured water and cordial.

Golden Plains Shire Council is one of 18 Councils VicHealth is working with this year to promote the challenge.

Almost 20% of Golden Plains residents drink soft drinks on a daily basis, which is unfortunately well above the Victorian average of 11.2%.

Switching to water can help improve dental health, maintain a healthy weight and save money.

Midland Highway overtaking lanes

In further good news, the location of four overtaking lanes on the Midland Highway between Bannockburn and Meredith have been announced.

VicRoads consulted with local residents on the locations of these overtaking lanes which were funded by $10m from the Victorian government.

Council has lobbied extensively for improvements to Midland Highway, which has a history of crashes.

VicRoads will soon appoint a contractor to complete the works, with construction expected to begin in mid-2017.

Rabbit problems

Did you know that the agricultural impact of rabbits in Australia is estimated at $206m per year in lost production? (www.pestsmart.org.au). The impact of rabbits on native flora and fauna is more difficult to quantify but we know that it’s very severe. The impact of rabbits on native flora and fauna sets in chain a process of degradation (e.g. erosion) that affects entire ecosystems.

On 6th March this year, a new strain of Calicivirus (Rabbit Haemorrhagic Disease) known as ‘K5’ will be released at 150 sites in Victoria. It’s expected that K5 will reduce the rabbit population by up to 40%. To get the maximum benefit out of K5, it is important to continue using a combination of methods to control rabbits. Autumn will be an ideal time to follow up the release of K5 by baiting or

fumigating to remove any remaining rabbits, getting rid of boxthorn, rubbish piles and, where possible, warrens.

Golden Plains Shire and Batesford Fyansford Stonehaven Landcare Group nominated a local reserve in Batesford to be one of the official release sites for K5.

There are several other release sites in our region.

Vials of K5 will also be available for purchase down the track. The Surf Coast Shire have committed to funding the purchase of three vials of K5 for dispersal in the Barrabool Hills Landcare Group area in Autumn 2018.

The K5 virus is spread by insect vectors, such as bushflies and blowflies. Direct contact between a rabbit and an infected rabbit carcass is also an avenue of spread.

NEW WEBSITE BRINGS SCHOOL LESSONS TO LIFE AT HOME FOR CORANGAMITE FAMILIES

I would like to encourage Corangamite parents and families to take advantage of a new website that has been launched by the Turnbull Government to help school children with their learning and homework.

The new website, Learning Potential Resources, is filled with hundreds of ideas, activities, games and videos to assist parents of primary school children get involved in their child’s learning.

The Learning Potential website will help parents and families to bring school lessons to life at home.

Now that the flurry of books, school uniforms and lunchboxes are taken care of, I know that parents are turning their attention to how best to support their child’s learning at school. That’s where Learning Potential Resources comes in.

This new website gives parents access to the resources that teachers are using in the classroom, adapted for the home environment.

Learning Potential Resources shows how to turn everyday activities like cooking, watering the garden or walking the dog into a fun and interactive learning opportunity.

Learning Potential Resources supports the Australian Curriculum for primary school and contains three main sections, which include:

• 41 ‘every day ideas’ to show parents how to practice literacy and numeracy skills with their child during everyday life.

• 80 ‘practice together’ articles to guide parents on how they can reinforce literacy and numeracy skills their child is learning at school.

• 80 ‘practice online’ activities, including internet games and videos that parents and children can do together to practice these same skills.

Parental engagement is a key factor in enhancing a child’s learning, supporting the vital work teachers do.

Parents are their children’s first teachers and a high level of engagement in their education is absolutely critical to success in the classroom.

The most important things that parents can do include having high aspirations for their children, reading together, talking with their children, exploring things their children have learned at school, and demonstrating that they value education.

The new website complements the popular Learning Potential app, which has been downloaded more than 119,000 times since it was launched in August 2015.
