Inverleigh Primary School recently had a "Colour Day". It was so Inverleigh Marketmuch fun for them, running past teachers and parents who were Sunday 20th October spraying them with water and blowing coloured chalk. There would have been many shower cubicles needing a good clean that night!

The Progress Association has been actively working towards improving the amenity of Inverleigh for over 40 years. Of course all such organisations need volunteers and the Association is no exception. Without them nothing happens. If you have some ideas for the town you would like to achieve, you are welcome to join us and help achieve them.

Some of the projects completed by the Progress Association include: The Federation Bridge which was built to commemorate the centenary of Federation in 2001.

Walking Tracks were established with lots of support from the community, including fencing and tree planting.

Public Toilets Progress Association members worked for many years with Council to have the old toilets removed and a new block built, which did not detract from the entrance to our town. They are used more than any other toilets in the Shire.

The Clock a new clock was recently installed on the clock tower in our main street, clearly visable from the General Store across the road.

The Inverleigh Historical Society was formed in 2004. It operates under the auspices of the Inverleigh Mechanics Institute and Public Hall Committee.

Our Aims are to collect and preserve items of local historic interest and to promote research and interest in local history.

We welcome all donations to our collection or the opportunity to copy material. We are most grateful to the many people who have kept meet in the Inverleigh Public Hall 0n the 4th Monday of each Month @ 8pm the Historical Society in mind as they sorted through their own collec(Except December & January) tions.

Hello Everyone. Daylight Savings Time is just around the corner so don't forget to change your clocks on Sunday 6th October.

There has been such a lot to cram into this month's edition, so plenty of good reading fore you all. Something's new coming soon to our district too. Women's Cricket has arrived in Shelford. Check it out on page 39. Also, Speed Shearing! Check it out on Page 26, raising money for Women's health, specifically breast cancer.

Lots of important info from our Shire too. "Have your say on Waste", the Structure Plans for "Teesdale" and "Inverleigh", Naming of the new "Inverleigh Play Space", "Seniors Festival" and "Walking to School". If you have an opinion on any of these important issues for our towns, it is important to let our Shire Councillors and Staff know so that they can incorporate the wishes of the residents in planning for the future.

INVERLEIGH PLAY SPACE NAMING PROPOSAL

Notice is hereby given that at its meeting held on 27 August 2019, Golden Plains Shire Council resolved to give notice of intention to name the parcel of land, as per the map. The name proposed is Inverleigh River Park.

The name is recommended in response to community consultation to formally name the parcels of land associated with the new Inverleigh Community Play Space, Inverleigh public amenity facility and skate park as a whole.

4 Leigh News POLICE REPORT FOR AUGUST 2019

Hello all,

We had the Superintendent from Ballarat visit the area last month and some residents were fortunate to have a conversation with her as we had a meeting outside the general store.

During one of these conversations it was brought to our attention by a resident that some motorists are driving early in the morning in the dark or in poor conditions without their lights on. It is a requirement to have your lights on driving a vehicle between sunset and sunrise and in otherwise poor weather conditions like fog, heavy rain, smoke etc. You need to be seen driving in these conditions. On a related matter I have issued many a fine for people towing trailers without lights going please check them before driving.

I have had some reports of some 4WD’s speeding and fishtailing along the

river track in inverleigh and I have seen signs of this on the road when patrolling.

If you are detected doing this at some point your car can be impounded and you can be charged with careless driving.

I would hope it is not a local but if it is or you know someone participating in this behavior I would encourage them to stop before I detect them.

The old Inverleigh signal box/ rail station in Cemetery Road has been a problem with people smashing boards off the sides to get into it. I have notified the rail authorities to hopefully board it up again. People engaging in this behavior can be charged with criminal damage or attempted burglary and would have to face court. If it continues the authorities may look at removing the building altogether.

VACANT PLACES TO LOCAL CREATIVE SPACES

Dear Editor,

I write to advise readers that applications for the Andrews Labor Government’s new Regional Coworking Spaces and Creative Places program are now open.

Grants of up to $75,000 are available for projects that will foster the development of new creative spaces and help existing spaces run programs and activities to connect with the community.

The program, which will run as a pilot in 2019, is the first Creative Victoria program to support infrastructure costs as well as projects and partnerships that will bring creative spaces like coworking hubs, artist studios, rehearsal spaces and more to life.

Supported projects could include a feasibility study or fit-out costs to transform a vacant building into an artist’s studio, buying equipment for an existing space, putting seed funding into a program for local creatives or a project make a creative space more accessible to the community.

Regional Coworking Spaces and Creative Places is an initiative of Creative State 2016-2020, the Labor Government’s strategy to grow the creative industries and the impact creativity makes on communities large and small.

A simple expression of interest process is now online and individuals, organisations and collectives, including social enterprises, not-for-profit organisations and councils are invited to apply.

I encourage our boldest visionaries, the innovators, the creative risk-takers in Western Victoria to embrace this exciting opportunity.

The Golden Plains Shire Council has prepared Amendment C87gpla to the Golden Plains Planning Scheme.

The land affected by the amendment is the township of Inverleigh.

The amendment proposes to implement the Inverleigh Structure Plan (Golden Plains Shire, 2019). The amendment proposes the following changes to the Golden Plains Planning Scheme: • Amends Clause 21.07-5 (Inverleigh) of the Golden Plains Planning Scheme based on the Inverleigh Structure Plan (Golden Plains Shire, 2019).

• Replaces Figure 21.07-5A Inverleigh Structure Plan with the Inverleigh Framework Plan (within the Inverleigh Structure Plan, (Golden Plains Shire, 2019)) • Replace the Schedule to the Low Density Residential Zone at Clause 32.03 with a new Schedule 1 to the Low Density Residential Zone at Clause 32.03.

• Amends Planning Scheme Map Numbers 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 10, 13, 14, 15, 17, 18, 19, 20, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28 and 29 where the Low Density Residential Zone applies, to reference Schedule 1 to the Low Density Residential Zone, shown as LDRZ1.

FROM THE MAYOR’S DESK – OCTOBER 2019 If you could pick your waste services, would you add garden waste? Or a food waste collection? Or would you keep the current garbage and recycling schedule?

These are some of the questions Council is asking as part of determining future waste services for Golden Plains Shire and the development of the Waste Strategy 2020-2030.

Right now, we are asking all residents to have their say on future waste options and Council is very interested in your opinion. I really enjoyed hosting a robust conversation with the strategy focus group in Meredith in September and, following our first conversation post in Meredith, we hope more residents will come and ask questions at our final community conversation posts in Bannockburn, Rokewood and Smythesdale, in October. The waste survey is also available at Council’s website: goldenplains.vic.gov.au and is published in the October issue of the Gazette.

Our Council is committed to community engagement and we welcome all residents to have their say on the decisions that affect their lives. If you’re interested in getting more involved in your community, there are many great ways to connect with Council including: signing up to Council’s Community Engagement Register, joining your local Community Planning group, following Council’s social media pages and reading the Gazette and the Golden Plains Times for engagement and consultation opportunities, sharing your thoughts in a survey on Council’s Have Your Say page, asking a question at a Council meeting in Linton or Bannockburn, or becoming a Council volunteer.

This month, Council is seeking more feedback on the Teesdale Structure Plan; Inverleigh Works Plan, Structure Plan, and River Park Name Change; and we’re excited to talk to residents about the Community Vision 2040.

A Focus on Spelling

At Teesdale, we’re taking the time to get spelling right. We’ve invested significant time from our professional learning calendar to consider how our teachers can be effective teachers of spelling, and not simply administering an off the shelf program or approach. What we are embarking on as a team is a school wide approach to spelling that is inquiry based and targeted to the individual needs of students.

Bike Workshops in Science

Grade 3 and 4 students have been working on their bikes. They completed a checklist to ensure all aspects of their bikes are functioning and safe. This included checks on the tyres, seat, chain, rust removal and cleaning. Congratulations to our new bike mechanics!

Chickens at the Melbourne Show

Grade 5 and 6 students prepared their hens for the Royal Melbourne Show. This included worming and pest dusting their chickens, creating graphs on chicken growth and egg production, and creating posters to be displayed at the show in the Livestock Pavilion.

CFA MESSAGE FOR THIS FIRE SEASON

This month the CFA news is a little different because we’d like to let you know of an Open Day that we’re holding next month (November 17th) which will start at the Community Market and extend up to the Fire Station.

At both the Market and the Fire Station you’ll have a chance to meet the local Inverleigh-ites who respond locally when the siren goes off, or form part of a larger contingent of CFA volunteers called to go throughout the state to fight the larger fires. If you’re thinking of volunteering, have a talk to one of the members so that you know what’s involved.

At both the Market and the Station there’ll be lots of information handouts ranging

from preparing you property, checking and installing smoke alarms, landscaping your garden in a rural setting, a fire ready kit and information about lighting fires and BBQ’s during fire danger periods.

The kids haven’t been forgotten either. We’re trying to coax Captain Koala down from the gum tree for the day to have their pictures taken with him, and he’ll have lots of different stickers, activity kits, galloons and rulers to give away. They can also become the Brigade’s “Captain” and we’ll have lots of red helmets for them to wear to let everyone know their rank.

After you’ve done your shopping and browsing around the Market there’ll be a sausage sizzle waiting for you

at the Station from about 10.30am where you can also check out not only the trucks but also our latest piece of equipment which is a high flow quick-fill trailer.

Also, up at the station, “On Site Farm Supplies” will have a display of their high-quality tool range (including Sidchrome, Jimy and Tridon) and work consumerable items for sale, part of the proceeds being donated back to the Brigade.

So, in November come along to our Open Day and be part of the Inverleigh CFA for the day, pick up information, check out the gear, meet Captain Koala and the volunteers and get something to eat.

OCTOBER 2019 CALENDAR Cattle Studs

The images are of two cattle studs west of Inverleigh, landmarks along the Hamilton Highway. I realise some readers do not often travel through Inverleigh to our agricultural roots towards Cressy, but it is a wonderful “Sunday Drive”. Go south to look at the windmills at Beeac, back past the ‘avenue of honour’ at Eurack, on the way to Winchelsea.

‘Wingiel’ , west from Wingeel Road, was the home of the Ardno Hereford Stud, which was sold in 2015.

The breed has its stronghold in the southern states and the Ardno stud was established over 80 years ago. ‘Wingiel’ was originally part of the large Barunah Plains holding of the Russell family.

Hereford. Origin: England.

Introduced to Australia in 1826. Features are redcoat with white face and underline, and horned. Suited to vealer, steer and bullock production or maternal/rotation place in crossbreeding.

The origin of the Hereford has been lost over time but it is generally agreed that it was founded on the draught ox descended from the small red cattle of Roman Briton and from a large Welsh breed once numerous along the border of England and Wales. Herefords have

taken their name from the county Herefordshire, an historic agricultural region of England where this breed has evolved.

The Maverick Simmental stud was founded by the Schembri family in 1974 and they have supported the Geelong Show for many years. The stud commenced near Bannockburn before moving to the district we call Hesse.

Simmental. Origin: Western Europe (Switzerland, Germany,

Austria, France etc) .Introduced to Australia in 1970. Features are red coat with broken white markings and white face; horned and polled strains. Suited to vealer, steer and bullock production maternal/ rotational/terminal place in crossbreeding. Simmentals are a popular breed worldwide and noted for their rapid weight gain , high carcase yield, high fertility, calving ease, excellent mothering, and quiet temperament.

If you have an interest in history, come along and join the Inverleigh Historical Society. We are always learning about our district and its past and we also collect current information and images. Today’s happenings will be ‘history’ for future generations.

A great start has been made to digitally cataloguing the Inverleigh Historical Society’s collection. Workshops were held

on Thursday 19th and Friday 20th of September, with members and volunteer helpers learning how to enter items on the Victorian Collections website.

Victorian Collections is supported by Museums Victoria, which provides ongoing updating and free access. Organisations can opt to make their catalogues public or to keep some or all private - only able to be seen by members. While we are in our training phase, our collection will be private.

`Hop on to the Victorian Collections website and have a look at all the organisations which have utilised the cataloguing system. If you love history and interesting items, you will have lots of fun checking out their collections or just searching using a key word such as ‘maritime’.

Click on ‘Stories’ and ‘Projects’ on the home page to see some specific research either completed or underway. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if the Inverleigh Historical Society presented some of its research as a ‘Story’ in the near future?

HAVE YOUR SAY ON THE FUTURE OF WASTE Golden Plains Shire Council is preparing a new Waste Management Strategy 2020-2030 and all Shire residents are encouraged to be involved in the discussion on the future of local waste management.

With a new 10-year waste management plan in the works and Council soon to go out to tender for a new services contract, it’s a great time to talk about future waste collection options for Golden Plains in 2022 and beyond.

Have Your Say on Waste A simple community survey about future waste options is open now until Friday 25 October, 2019.

The survey is available online at Council’s website: goldenplains.vic.gov.au/consultations. A paper copy of the survey will be printed in the October issue of the Gazette, Council’s community magazine which is delivered free to every home and business in the Shire; with copies of the paper survey also available at Council’s Customer Service Centres in Bannockburn, Linton and Smythesdale.

All community members are welcome to attend a Waste Management Strategy conversation post to speak with Council officers and complete the survey: • • • •

Council will also run a waste workshop in September with a focus group of residents who are community planners or members of the Community Engagement Register. All community feedback will be presented to Council for consideration as part of the Draft Waste Management Strategy in late 2019.

Mayor Cr Owen Sharkey said that waste management is a top priority for Shire residents and Council are keen to know if local communities are interested in green and food waste collections.

“As the population of Golden Plain Shire increases, so does the amount of waste generated in our municipality. It’s in everyone’s interests to make sure we have reliable, cost-effective and sustainable waste management in Golden Plains – and that means reducing the waste we put in the ground.

“The war on waste is a headlining news story and many Australians are taking important measures in their everyday lives to make a positive difference on this serious environmental issue, like taking green bags to the supermarket, bringing a keep cup for coffee or switching to paper straws. We understand and appreciate that solving the problem begins at home – and that what we do in our own backyard matters.

“Our neighbouring municipalities have garden and food waste services and we want to give Golden Plains Shire residents the same opportunity to consider if they support these options for our future waste management.

“Council has done the research and painted a clear picture of four new waste collection services for our Shire and now, most importantly, we need to know what the community wants. Waste management is one of the core services of Council and we appreciate that people have strong views on the subject, so I really encourage everyone to complete the survey and make sure that their opinion counts.”

SHELFORD PRIMARY SCHOOL

The term has been a busy one with swimming, chess tournaments, cooking, working on our art entry for the Geelong Show as well as the fundraising for our new playground gaining momentum.

We have also received funding as part of the Victorian Government’s $515 million investment in school maintenance. The funding will be rolled out in the next two years and will be placed in the school’s Student Resource Package (SRP). This funding has certain parameters in relations to its use. However, I will investigate every possible avenue to ensure it is used for the betterment of our school.

School Swimming

We spent the last week of term doing an hour of swimming lessons each day. All the students enjoyed the swimming and improved their swimming dramatically over the week. A big thank you to the Golden Plains Shire whose HEAL (Healthy Eating and Active Living) grant of $500.00 offset the cost of swimming for the school families.

Geelong Show. The Geelong Show runs from 17 -20 of October and we look forward to seeing the finished display Cooking Program

Our cooking program has been a great success with the kids relishing their roles in food preparation, cooking, serving, and cleaning up.

We welcome any parent help on these days to support the cooking program. For catering purposes please advise teaching staff if your child(ren) are unable to participate in a certain week or inform the school if there are any additional allergies or intolerances we need to be aware of.

NAPLAN Results

Congratulations to our students who received outstanding NAPLAN results. We were thrilled to see that all their hard work is showing such amazing results.

Playground Fundraising

Our playground fundraising is tracking well with grants from the Golden Plains Shire and the Bannockburn Bendigo Bank of $5000.00 each. We have also been successful in sourcing funding from Meridan Energy and we thank them sincerely for their financial support.

We hope to apply for another grant to raise the remaining funds needed to purchase and install the playground, remove the existing structure and replace the soft fall and landscape the area prior to the end of the year. This will enable us to begin construction in 2020.

Golden Pens - Write Side Up

G’day again from the Golden Penners. Isn’t it nice to see some warmer weather finally, it’s a nice time of year. Footy finals, daffodils, bees buzzing in the new flowers. Everyone seems to be a bit lighter, time to shred the winter woollies, but not to be put away just yet, I’m certain there is some more cold weather coming and of course Spring brings our most severe frosts, so make sure you cover your delicate plants on clear nights.

Our group is going along really well and we have welcomed another new member, Don. It’s an exciting time for us when we get a new face in the group, to hear words written from a new perspective and we hope he is not the last to join our group. We meet every fortnight at the Bannockburn library on a Thursday so please just pop in if you would like to see what we are up to.

This months poem was written by me way back in 2016 and it came about by a group exercise.

WORDS OF WISDOM FROM REV. PHIL

How often (and when) are we prepared to forgive another person? It’s really a thorny issue in today’s world because we’re not really good at it. I won’t bombard you with bits from the Bible, but this is the very thing that we, in this parish, are constantly asked to do But truthfully, we all know how hard it is; not just with the big things but with the very small things as well. In part, even the Bible doesn’t provide pat, easy answers because none of us live pat, easy lives. Think of the way the connections you have to the people you love sometimes get hopelessly tangled and snarled, until you can’t remember what the problem was in the first place. Think of the times you’ve been between a rock and a hard place, knowing that any decision you make will hurt someone. Think of the times you’ve been driven by circumstances to a place where compromising your integrity seems like a small price to pay if it will just get you out of this mess. See, life isn’t all black and white! It’s like that also with matters of forgiveness. And yet nearly everyone knows that part of the Lord’s Prayer which says, “Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.” So maybe there’s something in forgiveness that we might have missed.

Jesus knows that our lives aren’t black and white, and he also knows that we need help to live out of our better selves. And so he gives us the gift of forgiveness. He offers his forgiveness openly, freely and without restraint. There’s no way we will ever be anything less than God’s most valued children, no matter how many mistakes we make or people we hurt. We’re forgiven before we know we’re going to do wrong.

Turn your clocks forward 1 hour on Sunday 6th October.

It’s OK to have mixed motives and make mistakes – what’s important is that we keep trying. If we waited to forgive each other until we had perfect charity in our hearts, we’d be here until the apocalypse. Jesus is saying, just go and do it. Give it a go. Think of someone who’s making you furious. It could be the person who cut you off in traffic; it could be your son oor daughter who’s “throwing their life away.” It could be your spouse who never remembers to take the rubbish bins out; it could be the sibling who hurt and betrayed you so badly you haven’t spoken in years. Just do it. Say to that person in your mind, “I forgive you.”

It doesn’t matter if you don’t feel anything. You might feel an overwhelming rush of love and relief, or you might still feel cranky and self-righteous and just plain mad. It doesn’t matter. You’ve taken the first step.

Whatever else is in your heart right now – anger, fear, disappointment – there’s also a little seed of forgiveness that’s sprouted. And one day, if you keep practicing, you’re going to find that forgiveness in your heart has grown so great that you can start to forgive yourself. And that will be a great day.

We all do a bit of wheeling and dealing in front of God and try to “manage” our lives to look good before Him and others. But we don’t need to. Loving not the ideal but the real – that’s the challenge. Loving each other even when our frailties and failures are so apparent – that’s the struggle. But remember, forgiveness is the key that will unlock all sorts of benefits both got yourself and others. Give it a try!

Inverleigh Playgroup had a great session on 4th September when Urban Upcycle came along to the Inverleigh Hall.

We had an amazing turnout with over 20 kids and their family members enjoying creating some great masterpieces from recycled goods.

Inverleigh Kindergarten News 4YO Kinder Out and About On the last day of term we enjoyed an entire day out on a community walk where we visited all the places we had discovered over this term over the course of the day. We enjoyed Shu Brown’s company and were very keen to show him our Acknowledgment of Country we have been working on all term to show our respect for the land and country in which we live. We enjoyed climbing trees, building humpies, listening to the didgeridoo and sharing yarns. It was a spectacular day.

Aboriginal Inspired Art Our 4YO group express their interest in Aboriginal culture on a daily basis. After discussing the different symbols used in Aboriginal art, the children decided they’d like to once again explore symbols through their own art work. We used work from established Indigenous artists and symbol references to create our own.

Mapping Inverleigh - The Children’s Perspective The children have been drawing different locations from around Inverleigh that we have been visiting on our community walks. Pictured is our ‘Bush Kinder’ site that the children have depicted. They have included the Leigh River, the sour grass flowers, the trees that we use as a boundary line and their favourite ‘lol’ tree that they decorate with flowers.

Spring Babies

During the Spring and Summer, baby birds are the most common patient at Wildlife Centres.

However, many baby birds do not need rescuing and would be better cared for by their parents.

A fledgling is a young bird that has grown enough to acquire its initial flight feathers and is preparing to leave the nest and care for itself.

Fledglings can appear to be orphaned when in fact they are just learning to fly.

Taking these birds into captivity deprives them of the opportunity to learn the skills they will need to survive in the wild.

Unless the bird is injured, it is essential to leave them with their parents. If you are concerned the bird is orphaned, give the bird plenty of space, keep pets away, and watch from a distance to see if the parents are visiting the fledgling.

Baz’s Bad Breath Bother

Beautiful Baz is a lovely one and a half year old Border Collie who came in recently for his annual health check and vaccination wearing, as usual, his trade mark smile!! Baz’s dad was concerned by an on/off waft of bad breath from Baz’s mouth.

Despite looking in his mouth his pearly whites looked clean and tidy to him as far in as Baz would let him look.

Up on the consult table eye to eye with Dr. Kylie, Baz’s always present wide open mouth smile gave away a clue to the problem. With him excitedly panting away at face height, she could see near one of Baz’s big premolar teeth, at the very back of his mouth, was a dark and strange looking tooth.

This stood out as the rest of his teeth were so pearly white as his owner had described.

To make matters worse, Baz wasn’t that keen on letting anyone take a look this far back in his mouth - a problem he didn’t have so much on the other side - indicating that maybe he was protecting this tooth as it was sore when exposed.

It was decided the best thing for Baz would be to admit him for the day and to have an anaesthetic so the tooth could be properly examined and a plan devised.

Once Baz was nicely asleep and his lip could be lifted back, the true extent of Baz’s bad tooth was uncovered.

This tooth known as Right Upper Premolar 4, 104 or the ‘carnassial tooth’ was fractured in half all the way up to his gum and through the pulp! The tooth was rotting in the area of the fracture and the tooth could be wobbled with some dentistry tools indicating the root was also affected.

The gum in the area was also receding, meaning bacteria from the plaque could easily get into Baz’s blood stream and cause serious health concerns.

Spring Hazards

Spring is a beautiful season but can bring potential hazards for our pets.

In this article we have listed just a few for you to watch out for.

Parasites - With the warmer weather comes fleas, ticks and mosquitoes so its essential your pet is up to date with their parasite protection.

Allergies - The increase in seeds and pollens may cause your pet to develop skin irritations.

Snail Bait - Snail bait pellets can look like dog kibble. The poison is mixed with molasses, apple, soya bean or oats to make it attractive to snails but it also makes it tasty to dogs and cats.

Fertiliser - Pets love the smell and taste of some fertilisers. Fertilisers cause gastrointestinal irritation.

Bees and Wasps - Bee and Wasp stings can lead to pain and swelling at the site of the sting. It is rare but some dogs and cats can have a severe allergic reaction.

Asthma - Feline asthma is an allergic respiratory disease affecting at least one percent of adult cats.

Dog and cat teeth are very similar in their structure to human teeth, consisting of a crown (above the gum) and root (below the gum) and outer covering of enamel, inner matrix of dentine and a central running pulp which is the blood and nerve supply of the tooth. As with people, a chip in the enamel is more of a aesthetic issue, but if a chip or fracture extends into the pulp, it is painful and exposes the tooth to infection that can track right up through the pulp into the face!

For Baz there was no saving his tooth and given the amount of plaque on this tooth (the brown discolouration) it was clear Baz was not chewing on this side of his mouth as it was too painful. The tooth was extracted. This is done by making a flap in the gum, loosening the tooth using special dental tools. Once the tooth is removed the socket is closed over with sutures using the gum flap made at the start!

Baz woke up happy as Larry with a smile wider than ever. Having the rotten tooth removed is generally instant relief from pain and certainly a ‘breath of fresh doggy air’ in his owners face!. The kisses Baz’s Dad received when he came to collect him testified to his much fresher breath!

The bowls season is just around the corner starting in October and we are looking forward to another great year. We have our last weekend of practice on Saturday 28th September from 10am. It will be a training day amongst ourselves followed with a BBQ lunch and then watch the Grand Final. If you’re going past, drop in and say hello.

We are headed to Derrinallum for the second running of the Highway Challenge, a friendly game between Derrinallum, Cressy, Lismore, Mortlake and Inverleigh. The game was on Sunday 15th September but unfortunately we gave the title to joint winners, Derrinallum and Mortlake. It was a great day of bowls with fantastic country hospitality.

We will be offering a number of opportunities for the community to participate in functions at the club and to try the game of lawn bowls. We will run the ‘Bowling with Babies’ as we did last year. We are looking at

some dates in November for when the weather has improved. We will provide further information on this soon, so watch this space and our Facebook page. Please get in touch with Suzy Coleman for more info on 0431 080 977. We look forward to seeing you there.

We will continue to run our barefoot bowls on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month, keep an eye out for the signs around town, everyone is welcome to drop in.

Women’s Cricket comes to Shelford

Wow, what an interesting time to be involved in cricket.

The Geelong Cricket Association along with the Barwon Woman’s Cricket Competition is creating the first senior Women’s cricket league this year and Shelford Cricket Club is building a team of enthusiastic ladies from all over the Golden Plains. They range in age and skill with some never playing cricket before. Shelford and the Golden Plains shire along with the Geelong Women’s Cricket Team have shown a great deal of support along with local sponsors.

So far 9 women have signed up, which is enough to make a team. The competition will be a 20 overs’, 1-day competition with 9 players to a side and 8 games in total for the season.

Games will be played on a Sunday afternoon at 2pm; with the season kicking off on the 17th of November 2019.

Shelford is excited to be promoting and backing Women’s cricket in the area with both the men and women’s teams training on Thursday afternoon and Sunday morning. Shelford believe they will be the first and possibly the only club this year from the Golden plains to be fielding a side in this new senior women’s competition.

Tension-type headaches commonly present as band-like tension around the head, whereas migraine headaches usually result in pain on one side of the head and are commonly accompanied by nausea and sensitivity to light and sound.
